Pacman mirrors timingout

Hey forum,
I am having weird issues with pacman that I haven't been able to track down. when I issue
pacman -S <some package>
sometimes it will say error: failed retrieving file '<file name>' from mirrors <mirror name> : resolving timed out after 10520.
I have ran some pings while downloading and it only spikes up to about 195 ms. I am using wireless and have not tried using the ethernet NIC.
lspci -k show the following for my wireless
[jstephens@TuxAsus ~]$ lspci -k -s 03:00.0
03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Wireless 7260 (rev 73)
Subsystem: Intel Corporation Dual Band Wireless-N 7260
Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
libkmod: kmod_config_parse: /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf line 3: ignoring bad line starting with 'options'
Kernel modules: iwlwifi
[jstephens@TuxAsus ~]$
Side note that error is from the following which I got from the ALSA wiki page (But my sound does work so not sure why the error)
[jstephens@TuxAsus ~]$ cat /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
options snd_hda_intel index=1
options snd_mia index=0
options snd_slots=snd_hda_intel
[jstephens@TuxAsus ~]$
Laptop is a Asus Q550L. Other distributions that have been on here have not had any issues. I also doubled checked my mirrors and they were fully reliable according to the mirrorlist that I used from arch wiki.
Can someone point me in a direction? also what log should I refer too? I am used to /var/log/messages or /var/log/dmesg but I don't see either of them under var.

  • Pacman mirror for India

All the pacman mirrors seems to be slow from my location, chennai in southern India. The only reason I am sticking with ubuntu, is that they have got a mirror 4 kms away from my home in IIT and i get  60K download speed on my 512kbps line. I tried a few of them and none of them includeing the main server give more than 30k. This should'nt be a problem, except that my ISP has a download limit and I can  download for free only for 11pm to 9am, which is usually used for downloading other stuff. So how do I find which server will be fastest for me. I tried to ping the servers and compare, but I soon discovered that the ping really does'nt influence download speed. Often a server with higher ping seems to be faster than some with lower ping.

i use the apokryph server from the topic of #archlinux.de which is pretty up to date and i get good speed there aswell (about 650k). the downside is, that it doesn't include the community repo
edit: switched to hosteurope.de too. just as fast, more up to date than apokryph and it has community too /me happy

  • [Solved] Unknown bandwidth usage coming from pacman mirrors

Each 1 or 2 days, there is a brief unknown bandwidth usage coming my

During the bandwidth usage, I did the following commands to get some hints:

    In cron.daily, there is a "pkgfile" :

    if (( $UPDATE_CRON )); then
    /usr/bin/pkgfile --update >/dev/null

which seems to be the main suspect.
Thanks fukawi2 to make me figure it out.

  • Pacman/mirror errors (solved)

For the last 4 days when I have tried to install anything with pacman  (the mirror I use is "unixheads") I get errors saying it failed to retrieve files and no access. Prior to this I had very fast responses.

i fixed it by going into the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file and scrolling to the very bottom. there's an entry called #setup entry.
change the ftp to http in the unixheads url (and make sure all the other mirrors are still commented) that worked for me
I did as you suggested and then received this error when using pacman.

  • [SOLVED] pacman mirror problems

It seems that my preferred mirror (mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca) is down, so I commented it out of /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. However, pacman still insists on trying to download from this mirror EVERY TIME it tries to install or update a package
So each package takes about 15 seconds to say:
error: failed retrieving file 'gcc-4.5.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz' from mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca: Connection timed out
    before trying another mirror.
Is there an option to make sure pacman is using the mirrors specified in the mirrorlist, or to not use a certain mirror? I can't find anything in the man page or wiki.
    thanks.

I know this thread is marked solved but I've just run into the same problem and was wondering how you fixed this issue?
When I run pacman -Syu I get:
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca : Connection timed out
So I guess this is the same problem. It's weird though because I'm still able to search for packages without the connection timing out. I did check the mirrors status and it still seems to be up so I don't think that's an issue.
Any help would be appreciated, sorry in advance if I've done something wrong by posting in a thread marked solved.
Shot in the dark but I had a similar problem. The way I fixed it (and I'm still not sure why it worked) but I manually entered my DNS servers into my network manager applet. I don't know if you use Gnome, KDE, or whatever (I use KDE), but that worked for some reason. Maybe you could try it.
Thanks for the response, yes I'm using Gnome and networkmanager applet 0.8. I'm not too sure what you mean by entering the DNS server in the network manager applet. Are you suggesting that I enter my ip address (the one assigned to me by my ISP) into the BSSID or MAC address field? Those are the only two fields that I see when I select my connection and click edit in the network manager applet, unless I go to the security settings or one of the IPv tabs.
I was able to update my system after uncommenting the kernel.org mirror, so maybe it is the mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Too bad mirrors don't have a blog or something to post news/status updates on it could prove helpful when problems like this occur. Then again that would mean more maintenance for them and I can understand why it might be considered too much work. I guess https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus works good enough.

  • How to Change pacman Mirrors

arch works fine, except i use the ftp.archlinux mirror and its throttled, so my download are way slower then im capable.  i followed this from the wiki
    [core]
    # Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/core
    changed it to
    [core]
    ftp://ftp.nethat.com/pub/linux/archlinux/
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/core
    didnt work, tried
    ftp://mirrors.unixheads.org/archlinux http a well
It wouldnt work, It even hung once so i had to restart.
So i cant figure out how to use other mirrors besides the default one and have them actally work.  I would like to be able to download faster then 50-80kbps when im capable of mb's down at a time.  I saw this in the wiki
"Aria2 Mirror Script " but it also says not to use ftp.arch linux with it, so im stuck, its all i can use.  Any options for a newb?
maybe post a pacman.d if your in america? i dont know what im doing wrong.

  • Pacman mirror problems

what's up with pacman servers lately ? some mirrors are many weeks behind, others will drop my downloads after a couple seconds, some are just butt slow ..
it didnt use to be like that ..  i've just spent the last 20 minutes trying to download wine 1.2 (11 megabytes), and after trying about 5 servers and resuming about 12 times (which is unreliable at best since they all seem to have different versions of packages) , i'm still at about 52%..

  • Belnet pacman mirror

    Hello,
I have an internet connection of a university that works as follows:
You can download only 4GB per month off the internet with your account. But since Belnet is our backbone and contains only educational things like linux distributions, you may download from belnet without it costing any gigabytes.
My next pacman full system upgrade, is 900MB. I'd like to use belnet to upgrade archlinux to be able to use this 900MB for other things.
But, the belnet archlinux mirror, at http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/archlinux.o … y/os/i686/, doesn't work for me anymore. If I go to that URL, it keeps loading forever, but does nothing.
Could you try in a browser if that URL works for you?
Can someone of Archlinux fix this, or is it completely up to the Belnet administrators?
If anyone can help, thank you very much!

I have had lots of ups and downs with the belnet mirror as well. A lot of packages are out of date. Even though http://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html says it is up-to-date (at present anyhow).
And here's a package that seems out of sync in a lot of mirrors : sshfs
Its been updated two days ago (to 2.2-2) :
    http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort … =&limit=50
But pacman still tries to install version 2.2-1 :
    :: Retrieving packages from extra...
error: failed retrieving file 'sshfs-2.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed retrieving file 'sshfs-2.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from ftp.belnet.be : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
AS you can see it's also out-of-sync on the main mirror...
Another weird thing : the following mirror :
    http://mirror.leaseweb.com/software/arc … a/os/i686/
lists the package correctly (2.2-2), but this mirror is not even listed in the Mirror List from the wiki...
PS: is it possible to tell pacman to install a specific version of a package ?

  • Choosing pacman mirrors

Does it mean its a CDN and will automatically get the fastest/nearest server?
Do I choose FTP or HTTP
In general how many servers should I enable and how do I choose them? When I ping some servers that I think its near, it does not necessarily mean the fastest ping. In Ubuntu it can determine the fastest server to use. Is there something like that in Arch?

I was just about to post a message regarding a very high number of corrupted packages since yesterday. I've tried with the stock arch kernel and my self compiled kernel that up until yesterday I had no problems with.
when arch fetches a package it downloads it to /var/cache/pacman/pkg you may have some .part files that are interrupted downloads. You could try deleting them incase it's related.
For me, it seems to be the larger packages that are failing. I managed to install iptables, but samba, openoffice, and a kernel update fail each time. I currently use

    @nadman10
I've never used shorewall, but it appears to be a firewall.
It is unlikely that the default configuration of shorewall knows anything about pacman, and thus wouldn't allow the pacman protocol though.
You could try adding the following to your /etc/pacman.conf file under [options]:
    XferCommand = /usr/bin/wget --passive-ftp -c %u -O %o
This would (I believe) cause pacman to use ftp to retrieve the data files which shorewall would (most likely) allow.
Of course, if pacman uses a standard protocol (like ftp) then this wouldn't fix your problem.  In that case you would have to look through the shorewall documentation to find out how to allow the pacman mirrors to have access to your machine.

  • Pacman issues when updating/installing

I have done a few new Arch installs in Virtualbox over the past week or so. Each time I have alot of issues using pacman, and I never have before. There are two things that seem to be happening:
    1. At least every other time I use pacman to install and/or upgrade anything I get a package is corrupted error. I have tried using multiple different mirrors and it happens with each one. I have also tried reinstalling pacman with the same result.
    2. The second issue is pacman will just stop mid-upgrade/install. One example of this is when installing xorg. It was halfway through installing and just stopped at 55% on one of the files it was downloading. This has happened numerous times in the past week. Again, I have tried numerous pacman mirrors (all in the US) and reinstalling pacman, neither solved the problem.
    Anyone else seen anything similar?
I know this is a KDEmod mirror but I am having the same issue right now when I am trying to download KDEmod 4.2 from the US mirror. Pacman will just stop mid-download and I have to remove the db.lck on pacman then restart my KDEmod download. I have done it at least 5 times already and it isn't even half way downloaded.
    Last edited by JawsThemeSwimming428 (2009-02-18 22:57:39)

Thanks for the replies. I am running the Arch install in question in Virtualbox and the host is not having the issue. The host is Windows Vista and I suspected it to be a network issue originally, however when the VM Arch install was having an issue my Vista machine (host) still was able to browse the web. Not sure what else to try?
Just happened again while trying to install Firefox. While it froze at 93% on xulrunner I ran a continuous ping from the Vista host and not a single packet was lost. Pacman never finished downloading the file, just stayed at 93% until I killed the job. I had to remove the db.lck on pacman and redo the download (pacman does pick up right from where it left off). Any thoughts?

  • [SOLVED] Pacman -Syu not working from chroot

Hey all, after an update today I accidentally broke something - I googled the error message on my Ubuntu install and it sent me to the pacman Arch Wiki page, at the very bottom -
pacman wrote:Q: After updating my system, I get a "unable to find root device" error after rebooting and my system will no longer boot.
A: Most likely your initramfs got broken during a kernel update (inproper use of pacman's --force option can be a cause). Use the below procedure in order to restore it.
Boot from a Arch live-cd. Once booted, run:
    # mkdir /mnt/arch
    # mount /dev/sdx /mnt/arch (your root partition)
    # cd /mnt/arch
    # mount -t proc proc proc/
    # mount -t sysfs sys sys/
    # mount -o bind /dev dev/
    # mount /dev/sdx boot/ (your /boot partition)
    # chroot . /bin/bash
    # pacman -Syu
    # pacman -S udev
    # pacman -S mkinitcpio
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
    Afterwards, unmount and reboot.
OK, so i followed those instructions, however when I got to doing pacman -Syu I get a string of errors:

I've tried pacman -Syy (Returns the same errors) So I'm not sure what to do after that...
Any help to get me back on Arch is appreciated, Ubuntu's too slow!

    The first one -
I can ping 8.8.8.8 but not any of the pacman mirrors.

cat /etc/resolv.conf wrote:# Generated by dhcpcd

    # /etc/resolv.conf.tail can replace this line
The second thread said his rc.conf file was on static not dhcp - Mine doesn't have any mention of those two terms in it.
    EDIT:
Well I can't boot into my Arch install so I've not really got a choice other than chroot And I've tried it a few times with no result.
