Choosing pacman mirrors

Does it mean its a CDN and will automatically get the fastest/nearest server?
Do I choose FTP or HTTP
In general how many servers should I enable and how do I choose them? When I ping some servers that I think its near, it does not necessarily mean the fastest ping. In Ubuntu it can determine the fastest server to use. Is there something like that in Arch?

  • Pacman mirror for India

All the pacman mirrors seems to be slow from my location, chennai in southern India. The only reason I am sticking with ubuntu, is that they have got a mirror 4 kms away from my home in IIT and i get  60K download speed on my 512kbps line. I tried a few of them and none of them includeing the main server give more than 30k. This should'nt be a problem, except that my ISP has a download limit and I can  download for free only for 11pm to 9am, which is usually used for downloading other stuff. So how do I find which server will be fastest for me. I tried to ping the servers and compare, but I soon discovered that the ping really does'nt influence download speed. Often a server with higher ping seems to be faster than some with lower ping.

i use the apokryph server from the topic of #archlinux.de which is pretty up to date and i get good speed there aswell (about 650k). the downside is, that it doesn't include the community repo
edit: switched to hosteurope.de too. just as fast, more up to date than apokryph and it has community too /me happy

  • [Solved] Unknown bandwidth usage coming from pacman mirrors

Each 1 or 2 days, there is a brief unknown bandwidth usage coming my
pacman mirrors, downloading about 15-20mb. I would like to know what is
    responsible for this behavior.
During the bandwidth usage, I did the following commands to get some hints:
    $ tshark -i wlan0

    In cron.daily, there is a "pkgfile" :
    #!/bin/bash
    . /etc/pkgtools/pkgfile.conf
    if (( $UPDATE_CRON )); then
    /usr/bin/pkgfile --update >/dev/null
    fi
    from package : pkgtools
which seems to be the main suspect.
Thanks fukawi2 to make me figure it out.

  • Pacman/mirror errors (solved)

i fixed it by going into the /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist file and scrolling to the very bottom. there's an entry called #setup entry.
change the ftp to http in the unixheads url (and make sure all the other mirrors are still commented) that worked for me
I did as you suggested and then received this error when using pacman.

  • [SOLVED] pacman mirror problems

It seems that my preferred mirror (mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca) is down, so I commented it out of /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist. However, pacman still insists on trying to download from this mirror EVERY TIME it tries to install or update a package
So each package takes about 15 seconds to say:
error: failed retrieving file 'gcc-4.5.0-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.xz' from mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca: Connection timed out
    before trying another mirror.
Is there an option to make sure pacman is using the mirrors specified in the mirrorlist, or to not use a certain mirror? I can't find anything in the man page or wiki.
    thanks.

I know this thread is marked solved but I've just run into the same problem and was wondering how you fixed this issue?
When I run pacman -Syu I get:
error: failed retrieving file 'core.db.tar.gz' from mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca : Connection timed out
So I guess this is the same problem. It's weird though because I'm still able to search for packages without the connection timing out. I did check the mirrors status and it still seems to be up so I don't think that's an issue.
Any help would be appreciated, sorry in advance if I've done something wrong by posting in a thread marked solved.
Shot in the dark but I had a similar problem. The way I fixed it (and I'm still not sure why it worked) but I manually entered my DNS servers into my network manager applet. I don't know if you use Gnome, KDE, or whatever (I use KDE), but that worked for some reason. Maybe you could try it.
Thanks for the response, yes I'm using Gnome and networkmanager applet 0.8. I'm not too sure what you mean by entering the DNS server in the network manager applet. Are you suggesting that I enter my ip address (the one assigned to me by my ISP) into the BSSID or MAC address field? Those are the only two fields that I see when I select my connection and click edit in the network manager applet, unless I go to the security settings or one of the IPv tabs.
I was able to update my system after uncommenting the kernel.org mirror, so maybe it is the mirror.csclub.uwaterloo.ca. Too bad mirrors don't have a blog or something to post news/status updates on it could prove helpful when problems like this occur. Then again that would mean more maintenance for them and I can understand why it might be considered too much work. I guess https://www.archlinux.de/?page=MirrorStatus works good enough.

  • How to Change pacman Mirrors

arch works fine, except i use the ftp.archlinux mirror and its throttled, so my download are way slower then im capable.  i followed this from the wiki
    [core]
    # Add your preferred servers here, they will be used first
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/core
    changed it to
    [core]
    ftp://ftp.nethat.com/pub/linux/archlinux/
    Include = /etc/pacman.d/core
    didnt work, tried
    ftp://mirrors.unixheads.org/archlinux http a well
It wouldnt work, It even hung once so i had to restart.
So i cant figure out how to use other mirrors besides the default one and have them actally work.  I would like to be able to download faster then 50-80kbps when im capable of mb's down at a time.  I saw this in the wiki
"Aria2 Mirror Script " but it also says not to use ftp.arch linux with it, so im stuck, its all i can use.  Any options for a newb?
maybe post a pacman.d if your in america? i dont know what im doing wrong.

  • Stupid me deleted the pacman mirrors... [SOLVED]

I know this sounds incredibly stupid, but I did. I tried sorting the mirror list and now I can't seem to download certain packages from extra, and I'd like to go back to the original mirror list. I just can't seem to figure out which package the mirror list is contained in.

  • Pacman mirror problems

what's up with pacman servers lately ? some mirrors are many weeks behind, others will drop my downloads after a couple seconds, some are just butt slow ..
it didnt use to be like that ..  i've just spent the last 20 minutes trying to download wine 1.2 (11 megabytes), and after trying about 5 servers and resuming about 12 times (which is unreliable at best since they all seem to have different versions of packages) , i'm still at about 52%..

  • Belnet pacman mirror

    Hello,
I have an internet connection of a university that works as follows:
You can download only 4GB per month off the internet with your account. But since Belnet is our backbone and contains only educational things like linux distributions, you may download from belnet without it costing any gigabytes.
My next pacman full system upgrade, is 900MB. I'd like to use belnet to upgrade archlinux to be able to use this 900MB for other things.
But, the belnet archlinux mirror, at http://ftp.belnet.be/mirror/archlinux.o … y/os/i686/, doesn't work for me anymore. If I go to that URL, it keeps loading forever, but does nothing.
Could you try in a browser if that URL works for you?
Can someone of Archlinux fix this, or is it completely up to the Belnet administrators?
If anyone can help, thank you very much!

I have had lots of ups and downs with the belnet mirror as well. A lot of packages are out of date. Even though http://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html says it is up-to-date (at present anyhow).
And here's a package that seems out of sync in a lot of mirrors : sshfs
Its been updated two days ago (to 2.2-2) :
    http://www.archlinux.org/packages/?sort … =&limit=50
But pacman still tries to install version 2.2-1 :
    :: Retrieving packages from extra...
error: failed retrieving file 'sshfs-2.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from ftp.archlinux.org : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
error: failed retrieving file 'sshfs-2.2-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz' from ftp.belnet.be : File unavailable (e.g., file not found, no access)
AS you can see it's also out-of-sync on the main mirror...
Another weird thing : the following mirror :
    http://mirror.leaseweb.com/software/arc … a/os/i686/
lists the package correctly (2.2-2), but this mirror is not even listed in the Mirror List from the wiki...
PS: is it possible to tell pacman to install a specific version of a package ?

If you're new to Arch don't you think that sticking to basic bulletproof setup would be wise and then learn new stuff? If you try all things that are not necessary there is high risk of breaking system and you wont even have a clue where start to look for solution. Back in my first days with Arch I didn't even consider such things like mirror rank - goal was to setup working system. My advice is - choose manually mirror that have low sync delay from http://www.archlinux.org/mirrors/status/ and focus on major things. Good luck and feel welcome on the forum
EdTheUniqueGeek wrote:I am in the process I trying the shell script from adamrehard suggestion.
Again - pick rit or kernel.org mirror - you can be pretty sure they are working right now, for troubleshooting you can even choose archlinux.org (but change it for real usage) find out if it's not the http/ftp thing like people earlier noticed and work the problem with your configuration, the problem is not mirror choosing

  • Arch Linux Official Mirror Standards

Hey guys, note that I've searched for this but couldn't find anything...
Are there any kind of standards that must be met to become an "official mirror" for Arch Linux?
I'm not wanting to mirror Arch, but just wondering about it because all the US mirrors seem really lousy, at least for the time being.  If there are some kind of standards that must be met, are these official mirrors meeting them?
If there are no standards, shouldn't there be?
I don't know much about mirroring, so the whole idea might be totally preposterous.  It just seems that Arch would want any official mirror to be up to par for it's role in representing the Arch Linux Community.
Thanks for any information regarding the subject.

I'm just happy ANYONE is willing to donate that kinds of resources in the first place. Aren't you? If not, then why don't you make your own standards for mirrors, it's really easy to implement. Simply go through your pacman configuration, choose which mirrors fit your "approved" critera, and delete the rest. Then you'll be happy and the rest of us won't have to listen to you scream about how free isn't good enough.

  • Powerpill - A wrapper and download accelerator for Pacman

I've moved all the powerpill info to this page: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/info/powerpill
Please continue to use this thread for discussion about powerpill.
Last edited by Xyne (2008-11-13 07:20:17)

The 404 errors are probably from mirrors that are out of sync with your top mirror (the one that pacman loads the database from).  Some mirrors won't yet have the latest packages yet. They should still get downloaded from another mirror though, because the metalink itself contains the mirror that was used to sync the database. If you notice that certain mirrors always throw 404 errors, you might consider removing them from your list (it's an indication that they don't update often enough). Also, take a look at "reflector" linked in my sig.
Actually, I just checked http://users.archlinux.de/~gerbra/mirrorcheck.html and holmes.umflint.edu hasn't synced in 16 days, so I think you can remove that one from your list for now.
I'd need to know what command you invoked powerpill with to get that pacman error ("powerpill -S" perhaps.... which leads to the same error as "pacman -S"). During a normal sync operation, powerpill invokes pacman 3 times:
First with the pacman arguments that you passed it, adding the argument to print the package URIs.
Once with -Ss to build a package-to-repo hash.
Finally with the original arguments to pass control to pacman for installation.
Of course, there are sanity checks on which arguments were passed. If the requested operation does not involve downloading, control is passed to pacman immediately. If the requested operation included the "download only" option, it exits instead of calling pacman once downloads are complete. Powerpill doesn't play pacman-babysitter though, so it doesn't catch invalid pacman operations (although it does strip out any powerpill-specific arguments).
Aria is always invoked once and only once if the operation involves downloading, regardless of the number or size of the files.
Powerpill passes the pacman arguments it receives to powerpill along with the argument to print the URIs for the requested operation. Powerpill then takes this list, which contains the URIs to the files on your top mirror, and parses them to create a list of the pkgs that it should download. It then grabs the other mirrors for each repo from the pacman configuration files and builds a list of URIs to each requested packages on the different mirrors. These lists are used to create a single metalink for all the packages which is then piped to aria2c. This is done regardless of the number of files or their sizes. The single metalink makes it possible to download multiple files simultaneously and large files in segments. The metalink file itself contains information to determine how many connections to use for each file, so smaller files are not segmented. Even if there is only one small file to download, it is still just as fast as wget or curl or any other downloading utility.
When downloading files in the metalink, the list of URIs to the package on different mirrors is available for all packages, regardless of the connection limit per file. Aria2c chooses a mirror from the list and tries to download the package. 404 errors will occur if that mirror doesn't get have the latest version of the package. In that case, aria2c will just use another URI from the list until it gets the file. Each list will contain a URI to the file on the mirror that pacman used to sync the database, so that file will get downloaded from there if none of the other mirrors have the package yet.
Take a look at the metalink file generated for different operations.
    powerpill -S <pkgA> <pkgB> <groupX> --get-metalink -
The "resources" tags contain the "maxconnections" attribute. You can confirm that small files are limited to 1.
My current version control system consists of leaving older versions in a directory on that server. Because of powerpill's "simple script" origin, I haven't given much thought to anything more serious, although I'll consider it. Thank you for your offer.

  • Mirroring with apple TV

I'm having trouble mirroring my iWork, (keynote presentations)  with appleTV.  When I click on the mirror button and then choose to mirror the display.  The slider moves and then 2-5 seconds later it resets to Mirror Off and the display never does mirror my pad.  Sometimes I can get the mirror to work, but only after rebooting the iPad.  Any thoughts?

Well that's the issue my friend. I called apple and told them what I wanted to do. They told me to get those things. So ... I called abck and double checked. I asked a different person the same scenario. Same ereply. So yes I did order apple tv and airpolay. As stated it doesn't work. The image is WAY smaller than the screen and it's not scaleable at all.
I don't understand what the praying jab is about. Praying was never mentioned in the issue here was it?
Back to the issue: it's not that I didn't realize this technology isn't here I was told it was by two different techs. So when I called back to explain my problem I was bounced around apple to several departments to find the technology simply wasn't here yet as I was told. I was informed incorrectly. So appple let me return the products. The customer service person apologized and I certainly accepted.
So the issue has nothing to do with praying etc. it's simply that for some reason, using your ipad for a demo only nets you 40% of the screen size and scaling is not an option.
Wish I knew that before I placed the order as that was not how it was explained either time I called in.
Now, let's have some techs start working on this issue... else I'm about to start praying... ;-)
