Pacman slow in Arch, but fast in Ubuntu

Hello
I searched among Pacman related topics on this forum, but I didn't find anything related to problem I have. It takes Pacman very long time to download many small files. Bandwidth isn't the case, but the time it takes Pacman to start downloading next package. My average ping to http://mir.archlinux.fr is about 70ms. When Pacman completes downloading packageN there's a few second lag till it will start downloading packageN+1. There's no such lag when I run Arch Linux in Ubuntu under KVM and using the same mirror.
PS. I have ipv6 disabled.

  • Why is siri slow an 4g but fast on wifi

Hi, I have a 4s I need to now why is siri not fast on 4g but great on wifi, if there is a soultion please help me, thanks.

Well, Wi-Fi speeds are generally going to be faster than any of the "4G" networks that the iPhone can currently connect to. I use quotes, because some would debate calling HSPA+ a 4G network, due to its relatively slower speeds.
    So, Faster Data = Faster Siri == Wi-Fi > "4G"

  • Wireless USB doesn't work in Arch, but works in Ubuntu.

Hello. I've had Arch installed (including wireless) on my laptop for about a month, no problem. i just followed the guide and it worked. When I tried to do the same on my desktop, wlan0 don 't show up. That's it, it's not there according to arch. The loopback interface and my build in ethernet (eth1 I think) shows up, but nothing else. I have a belkin FSD7050. Any ideas?
Oh, it works perfectly in Ubuntu no questions asked. In fact, I'm typing this on a live cd of gOS, which isn't nearly as customizable as Arch .

Yes. Just did both.  Only eth0 and lo show up. No wireless interface is ever listed.
Edit: If I do a 'lspci | grep -i net', only my ethernet controller shows up. So my belkin adapter is not being detected?

  • Is Arch really faster than Ubuntu ?

    Hello Archers !
I think a lot of you answered this topic title already while reading it.
Phoronix (a bunch of serious guys doing linux benchmarking) did the test.
    You may find it here.
It is not conclusive at all.
Sorry but : Arch isn't faster.
(but it's not slower at least !)

    1. You're already late.

  • Why is Firefox slow on Wireless but fast on Wired?

I have an HP Laptop 6730b which was given to me from my company. When I am at work, and connected to our LAN by an Ethernet Cable, Firefox runs perfectly fine and starts up super fast.
Then when I come home and turn on the Wireless on the laptop, Firefox takes like 20 seconds to startup and 20 seconds on every click. Whether clicking on a link of the same website or clicking on a favorite in my favorite tab, it takes 20 seconds to "Think" first then it loads quickly. This "thinking" part is what's killing me and it ONLY HAPPENS ON WIRELESS!!!

Actually, here is exactly my problem: I bring my work laptop home with me. I connect to my wireless at home and my internet works just fine. Through Internet Explorer 6.0 that is.
But with Firefox, its super slow. Takes 20 seconds to open, and 20 seconds on any link or favorite I click on.
And here is the confusing part: the problem goes away when I log into my company's network through the VPN client. Once logged in there, Firefox is back to normal and fast again.
Only when I'm not on VPN at home, does Firefox give me this problem. I have Firefox on my personal computer at home and it goes fast, so why does it give me a problem here on my work computer. Heck even IE 6.0 works normal on my wireless. It's just mind boggling. I would normally install Safari but my company won't allow it at this time.

  • Gui application slow with JWS but fast without

I've created and generated a GUI application into a jar file. Starting the application via
the java web start gives me a very poor performance. However starting the GUI
application by double clicking on the downloaded jar file works very smoothly and fast.
I don't want to lose the JWS options of automatic downloads of updated applications etc.,
any ideas of how to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

I saw that suggestion when I did a search on problems like this.
It used to go fast, but for some unknown reason, it slowed down w/ CPU maxed at 100% a few weeks ago. The user swears nothing changed.
As for 1.4.1RC1, all I can tell you is I installed the english JRE, then tried the international JRE, then the international SDK for 1.4.1RC1 for Windows. I even uninstalled JRE 1.3.1_04 before that and also uninstalled before each install. In none of the installs did Java Web Start get installed on the desktop. I did a File Find using Windows for "javaws.exe" and it was not on any local drive. It's almost as if the JWS installer was not run automatically during the install process because I didn't see it pop up.
There are no disk space issues. This user is running Win2K and had 18GB (yes, gigabytes) free on his laptop.

  • Help needed:MBP net connection slow on OSX but fast on Vista...

Ok..I've searched these forums for a while, seen lots of posts taking about people having problems with their airport card, routers and the like..but I haven't seen anyone having quite the same problem as me. My 17" 2.33Ghz C2D is linked to my 1Mb ADSL internet connection via an Aztech DSL600EW modem router. The problem is that the connection speed is really slow when I'm running the machine on OSX. I know it's an OSX thing cos the same machine, connected to the same router and running Windows Vista via Bootcamp will connect to the net ALOT faster. For example, if I'm viewing videos on youtube with OSX, I have to wait every few seconds for the video to buffer, but on Vista, the buffering is way ahead of the video. Another example would be downloading files...say from rapidshare. The typical download speed I get on OSX would be around 5-10Kbps, but with Vista, I get at least 25Kbps.
I'm quite new to OSX, and still trying to learn my way around the operating system. It seems such a pity for a really great machine with a really great operating system to be let down by slow internet connection. I hope someone out there will be able to help me sort this out. Thanks in advance.

Great, happy that it "seems to speed up things ..." Why not run the SpeedTest and "know?"
I use IPNetTuner ($30, free 21 day trial).

"*Why is it Sometimes Necessary To Tune TCP/IP*?
TCP/IP is not controlled by any manufacturer and is designed to work on almost any kind of underlying network with widely varying characteristics.
To meet this challenge, the protocol designers made TCP adaptive. TCP is self monitoring and optimizes its own behavior to match the network environment.
*Why can't somebody just write a utility that analyzes my network and automatically selects the optimum settings?* Such a tool would be both useful and popular. The answer is they already have, it's called TCP/IP, but sometimes it needs a little help.
In most cases, TCP works remarkably well all by itself. Tuning is needed in those cases where TCP doesn't quite get it right because the the network behavior is outside the expected range. Typical problems include:
Asymmetric connections that are much faster downstream than upstream.
High performance connections with relatively long latency ..."

  • Adobe Reader XI 11 slow in browser but fast in Reader..

We are required to use IE 8, within IE we have an intranet which references PDF files.
If I open the PDF file from the network \\fqdn\share\xyz.pdf it works and is very fast (in PDF Viewer)
If I open the same pdf, from the same path inside of IE 8, it opens but then freezes for 6-25 sec.
I cant change browsers, I cant change versions or readers.
    Any idea how to resolve?
My first thought was to have it open in the reader vs the browser, but the checkmark to disable opening in browser does not exist.  Disabling the plugin also did not work.
    Environment
    Server 2003 R2
    IE 8
    Reader 11

    Fixed my own issue.
Do the following steps to disable Adobe Reader browser plug-in in IE8:
    1. Launch IE8
    2. Click on Tools menu > Manage Add-ons
    3. Select the "Toolbars and Extensions" under "Add-on Types"
    4. Select the "Run without permission" from the drop-down menu under "Show"
    5. Select the "Adobe PDF Reader"
    6. Click on the "Disable" button
    7. Click on "Close" button to dismiss the "View and Manage your Internet Explorer add-ons"
    Fixed my issue.

  • Internet slow on mac but fast on windows

    Hello,
I recently bought this mac book pro...from Amazon last week.
    It has the Lion OS.
I have  a Belkin N Wireless router at home and comcast Internet.
I have a couple of windows lapstops at home (Lenovo) and now have this new Mac.
The internet on the mac seems to be teribbly slow compared to the Windows PC ?
I enter the url and then the blue background progress bar gets stuck at around maybe 10 to 20% and then not forward movement ?
speedtest.net told me that I have to update my flash playwer  (SW something)...which I did and then
speedtest.net gives me 25+_ mbps speed results but browsing mostly is extrmely painful....
after this the internet also seems to work ok, so was it the flash ? (not sure why that would be need for all sites or atleast most of the sites?)
I had instaled this flash last week also and then today when I updated my MAC with the apple updates...looks like it lost it again ?
not sure if the internet will be slow again tomorrow.... -:(
    Any ideas please ?
Also, every time I have boot the machine or bring it back from sleep I have to go to network diagnostics and get the internet back ?
no clue what is going on....
Any thoughts would be much appreciated !!
    Regards,
    Naresh

The information you're giving me is ambiguous, so I can't be sure that I'm giving you the right information either. However, it seems at least possible that there was an improvement when you logged in as guest, and no improvement when you booted in safe mode and logged in as yourself. I'll assume that's the case.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now. If you skip this step, no one but you will be responsible for the consequences.
    Quit Safari if it’s running.
    Step 1
Select /Applications/Safari in the Finder and open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in that window labeled “Open in 32-bit mode.” If that box is checked, uncheck it. Close the window.
Hold down the option key and select Go > Library from the Finder menu bar (Lion) or open the Library subfolder of your home folder (pre-Lion). Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.Safari
    Caches/Metadata/Safari
    Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Finder window open. Try Safari again.
    Step 2
If it still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder, and move the following file to the Desktop:
    Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Then delete the following items (some may not exist):
    Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
    Cookies/Cookies.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
    PubSub/Database
    Safari
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. Select File > Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the old bookmarks file.
Note: This step will remove your Safari Extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to restore them, do so one at a time, testing after each to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
If you don’t like the results of step 2, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place. You don’t need to restore the files you deleted in step 1.

  • Airdisk - SLOW read speed, but FAST write speed with Leopard 10.5.1?

I've been complaining for a while about my random problems with reading files from airdisk. My solution has always been to relaunch finder and re-mount the airdisk when it slows down.
I just noticed the speed cut down to and when looking at the activity monitor, it's fluctuating up and down and never seems to go past 1.5 to 2 MB/s.
HOWEVER, what I did just notice is that my write speed is consistently 3-4 MB/s with no fluctuation at all. Interference is not an issue, as I'm on N-only mode and in 5GHZ.
Is there anything I can do aside from waiting until 10.5.2? This does this issue in every AEBSn firmware. Thanks.

I experience the same problem (slow read: 2,8 MB/s, fast write: 6,3 MB/s) with my airdisk over a LAN-connection with 10.5.2. I atteched the USB-drive directly to my iMac and then it's the other way around: fast write, slow read (although considerably higher and normal throughtputs so drive is OK).
Anyone having some suggestions? The airdisk is formatted as HFS+ (GUID) with journalling on, Airport firmware 7.3.1 and the most recent updates installed.

  • Youtube vid on aTv slow to load, but fast on PC

Hi, I have a 384kb/s ADSL connection. On my aTv I selected a vid on youtube, then I had to wait about 5 minutes for the vid to start showing. During this time the vid is obviously being buffered. After I watched the vid I marked it as a favorite. I then whent to my PC, logged into youtube, went to my favorites, selected the vid and it started showing immediately while buffering.
What I cant understand is, why does it take so long to start on the aTv, when the aTv and my PC are both on the same ADSL connection.

Maybe the web one is 320 resolution and flash, but the AppleTV one is higher resolution and in 264 format (meaning a bigger file size)?
Also, the AppleTV is probably hitting a different server than when accessed through the web.
    Just a thought.

  • Slow and insecure but feature-rich pacman wrapper in bash

This project of mine started because I want to compile my packages in a way that lets me delete gnome apps. Here's the problem: I see that evince depends on gnome-keyring, gnome-keyring depends on gconf and alltray depends on gconf. This leads me to think that if I recompile evince to not use gnome-keyring and recompile alltray to not use gconf, I can delete gconf.
    NO!
I have to recompile evince to not use gconf as well because little do I know from pacman's dependency handling... gconf is a direct (but second level) dependency of evince as it's compiled as well.
This is a pretty standard problem. It's the reason why debian dependency lists are so damn long. I don't want Arch to move to a system like that... well sort of. Here's what I did. I made a script that acts just like pacman but when you tell it to download and install a package, it tells pacman to only download that package into a separate cache, then it extracts the package, finds all dynamic executables in the package, uses ldd to determine their library dependencies, uses pacman -Qo to find packages that own these dependencies (and caches them in a file so they can be looked up more quickly in the future), applies some other enhancements that should be visible in the script, then adds the new dependencies to the depends array and makes sure that none are duplicated. It also formats the array so that it goes (original clean dependency list) kernel26 (new list). That way it can parse queries as well so -Qi will omit all the dependencies after kernel26 and the Required By section while -Qii shows everything. This is the perfect compromise for me. Not sure if it will be for you.
    Other things it does:
    * Checks if AUR packages need updating (but doesn't update them)
    * Takes out docs and gconf schemas
    * Cleans up man pages so there's no /usr/man and just /usr/share/man/man*
    * Convers /usr/share/man/locale/man1/whatever.1.gz to /usr/share/man/man1/whatever-locale.1.gz
    * Converts info pages to man pages with info2man and puts them in man9
    * Gzips all man pages
    * Allows replacing packages with -U
    * Package specific stuff like disabling the firefox error console.
Regretably I had to make it play around with the md5sums. This essentially makes them useless but if I don't do this reinstalling a package that is in the main cache because this script put it there fails due to corruption. So you might want to get rid of this "feature" and probably the firefox / uvesafb /gstreamer / info2man stuff but this is cool so tell me what you think of it.

rls wrote:ABS is fine, but unless I am mistaken, it does nothing to ensure the configure and make stages go smoothly. It is a good way to integrate "home-rolled" packages into the Arch system.
hmmmm... I could be wrong because I've never used Gentoo, but if you make a package that doesn't already exist for Gentoo, does it do anything to make sure the compilation goes smoothly?  If the package exists, then there is a way to build the package that has been tested by somebody else. This is how ABS works too; if a PKGBUILD exists, you can be reasonably sure it will work.
I can't imagine a program that can automatically fix or recover from compiler or Makefile errors. If it does, then... wow.
I assume that Gentoo has a larger package base than Arch, but let's not get into that discussiong again!
Xentacs script is basically designed to allow you to choose whether you are going to install from source or binary. Assuming the PKGBUILDS are in order (which for arch repository programs they are, because the binaries were built from them!), this should work as flawlessly as installing from binaries.

  • SLOW MDX Query in an Environment but Fast in another

A query runs slow in one environment but fast another : here's what I looked for so far without any luck.
It takes 2 seconds to execute the query below in QA vs 20 seconds in prod.
QA cube size is 430.81 MB - 474.54 MB on PROD
    Cubes match in environments
Compared QA and PROD properties and they match (database and server Analysis services)
    Restarted services on both machines
Looking at SQL server provider seems that the query has no significant effect on the CPU
Seems there's a spike in pages/sec when the MDX query runs – the VM size is slightly > in PROD than in QA this shouldn’t affect it .Looked at the Storage Engine queries ,MDX counters and Nothing stands out
    here's the query

    Question
The first time I start Firefox it is very slow coming up but after it is up and I want another window it fast again. What do I need to do to clean out whatever is clogging it up. edit

    * The first time you start up any application after turning on your computer is called a cold start, which is why Firefox takes a while to load right away. (I've noticed that future versions of Firefox start up faster on a cold start then Firefox 5.0.1.) Also, a lower amount of RAM could be slowing its start-up down since Firefox is kind of memory hungry.
    * As for the second part of your question, press ctrl,Alt, and the delete keys on your keyboard. The Windows Task Manager should start. Go to the processes tab and look for 'firefox.exe'. Right click on the firefox.exe and click 'End Process'. Hit Yes and wait for a minute.
    * Then opening Firefox again.
    Hopefully this helped somewhat!

  • How to Restore Arch's grub after Ubuntu install to 2nd disk

I installed Ubuntu to sdb after installing Arch to sda. Ubuntu was installed with LVM, though Arch does not use LVM.
I want to wipe out ubuntu now, but it seems to be in control of my boot process, and as a newb, I'm not quite sure how that process transpires.  I have read the Grub article on Arch's Wiki site, but that doensn't help me.
After booting into Arch and running:
    # grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg
and then rebooting, I still have the Ubuntu Grub menu on the next boot.  My Arch /etc/default/grub is the same one that I used before installing Ubuntu - I'm not concerned about adding Ubuntu to the menu, so that's not an issue.
What do I need to do to get Arch back in control of the boot process?
    Thanks in advance!

Kilz wrote:Here is an option in case you cant figure it out. Rename the /boot directory in the ubuntu install and copy the /boot directory from Arch in its place. Reboot, if everything works fine delete everything in the Ubuntu partition but /boot. Rename the /boot directory in the Arch install then shrink the ubuntu partition and mount it in the arch install as /boot. in the end you will just have a separate boot partition that will take up little space.
Thanks again. I finally got it working, but via a different, somewhat convoluted route.
I screwed things up and ended up with only a grub prompt at boot.  Following instructions found online, I was able to boot my arch disk (sda), then ran grub-install and grub-mkconfig.  The install ran without errors (as before) but grub-mkconfig reported errors.  I had been disregarding these errors, because I thought they were related to the custom font and background in my /etc/default/grub file, and another source explained that I could ignore errors when setting fonts and background there (not sure if that source was reliable).  But one of the errors on grub-mkinstall reported it couldn't find device.map.  There was no device.map in /boot/grub.
Also of note, I had renamed the old /boot/grub/grub.cfg and left the /boot/grub directory without a proper grub.cfg file - probably why I got a grub menu at boot!
In the end, I created a device.map in /boot/grub/ and re-ran grub-mkconfig, but still got an error.  So I commented out the font and background lines in /etc/default/grub and also renamed my old backup /boot/grub/grub.cfg-backup to the proper "grub.cfg", then re-ran grub-mkconfig.  This time there were not errors reported from grub-mkconfig and with a quick glance at the contents, I was able to figure out that the menu entries looked good.
I was able to reboot with the appropriate arch menu at this point!  While I'm not sure which step "fixed" my problem, I wanted to at least record my steps here for future users - perhaps one of the options above will help someone else.  Worth mentioning is that the ubuntu (sdb) drive was LVM, and I think that might have played into some of my difficulties, but I'm not sure about that.
The device.map that I created looked like this, where sda is my arch disk and sdb is the ubuntu installation (still not sure if it is needed, though):
    (hd0) /dev/sda
    (hd1) /dev/sdb
