Why is Firefox slow on Wireless but fast on Wired?

I have an HP Laptop 6730b which was given to me from my company. When I am at work, and connected to our LAN by an Ethernet Cable, Firefox runs perfectly fine and starts up super fast.
Then when I come home and turn on the Wireless on the laptop, Firefox takes like 20 seconds to startup and 20 seconds on every click. Whether clicking on a link of the same website or clicking on a favorite in my favorite tab, it takes 20 seconds to "Think" first then it loads quickly. This "thinking" part is what's killing me and it ONLY HAPPENS ON WIRELESS!!!

Actually, here is exactly my problem: I bring my work laptop home with me. I connect to my wireless at home and my internet works just fine. Through Internet Explorer 6.0 that is.
But with Firefox, its super slow. Takes 20 seconds to open, and 20 seconds on any link or favorite I click on.
And here is the confusing part: the problem goes away when I log into my company's network through the VPN client. Once logged in there, Firefox is back to normal and fast again.
Only when I'm not on VPN at home, does Firefox give me this problem. I have Firefox on my personal computer at home and it goes fast, so why does it give me a problem here on my work computer. Heck even IE 6.0 works normal on my wireless. It's just mind boggling. I would normally install Safari but my company won't allow it at this time.

  • Why is siri slow an 4g but fast on wifi

Hi, I have a 4s I need to now why is siri not fast on 4g but great on wifi, if there is a soultion please help me, thanks.

Well, Wi-Fi speeds are generally going to be faster than any of the "4G" networks that the iPhone can currently connect to. I use quotes, because some would debate calling HSPA+ a 4G network, due to its relatively slower speeds.
    So, Faster Data = Faster Siri == Wi-Fi > "4G"

  • Why is Firefox Namoroka 3.6.3 faster and more stable than Firefox 3.6.8

a)Why is Firefox Namoroka 3.6.3 faster and more stable than Firefox 3.6.8.
Firefox 3.6.8 repeatedly crashes and the message details are Plugins/Plugin Basket!!!
The original Firefox Namoroka 3.6.3 is not only faster but does not crash?
    b) Why are there NO security updates for Firefox Namoroka 3.6.3?

Namoroka is the nightly tester version of what will become the next Firefox release, and it is up to - Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.0; en-US; rv:1.9.2.9pre) Gecko/20100813 Namoroka/3.6.9pre ID:20100813042130 - right now.
If you are having problems with the Plugin Container in 3.6.8, you will probably have the same problems with 3.6.9pre, too.
The first thing you should do is to update to the latest "86" release that came put this past Thursday.

  • Why is wireless performance faster than wired WRT54G v8?

Why is wireless performance faster than wired WRT54G v8?

Have you checked the different wired computer..? or on all the wired computers are having same problem...?

  • Firefox slow wireless but fast wired. No issues running IE wireless. Tried system restore, fact. reset, turned off accl, disabled addons, run in safe mode.....

So i have an HP e118dx running on windows 8.1 with very little software on it. Currently running FF 37.0.1 and in wireless mode it always hangs up, runs slow, or times out. When plugged in it runs just fine. Can get on net using IE via wireless and no issues. So it seems to be something specific to FF on the wireless side. Thought it might have been my wireless card but running IE just fine seems to rule that out.
Have already tried system restore a few times, factory reset, turn off hardware accel., run in safe mode(FF), disabled add ons and nothing seems to help. If i have tabs open while wired, then go wireless and refresh the pages or browse on the already open pages i tend to get a couple minutes of trouble free experience before it slows to a halt again.
To recap....FF on wireless=slow and wired=fast. No difference when using IE wireless---always fast.

Not sure what you mean by # of connections being made. Not sure if that means tabs open, or folks using the actual wireless network. A while back when i was going through this with the isp i got a crash coarse on how to go into the modem and check a bunch of different stuff, as well as reset things. When looking in there only 1 or 2 computers showed on the network. The network is password protected......i guess protected only to the extent that a pswrd can. Not certain if someone nefariously connected somehow.....didn't show up when looking for users on the network though.
The first bullet point......Not sure how to do any of that so i'd say no.
Second bullet point......Yes, did lots of clearing temp files, caches, history, etc. along with systems restores and factory resets. although not exactly sure what you mean by dns cache. Might have done this but don't recall specifically seeing that.
Third bullet point.....It doesn't make any difference on this end whether its on no proxy, auto proxy, manual proxy. While i have no idea what all this stuff does/affects performance i played with it on all different settings and nothing changed here. Put it back to no proxy.
The thing is even when my wireless FF is acting up other devices in the home can be on the wireless with no issues. Think the other devices are using Chrome and some phone wifi hookup. Keep in mind if i switch to IE on the same device with FF windows open the IE will run just fine. At any given time there should only be 1-4 devices on the network so i'm guessing that shouldn't overload anything. Besides none of the other devices ever seem to come into this issue.
There always seems to be some issue that pops up after updates. Can't ever just leave working things alone.

why is firefox very slow and internet explorer now leaves it standing ?
    == This happened ==

Some of your extensions might be the cause of the problem. Try starting Firefox in Safe Mode then going to Tools--Addons--Extensions to see if one of your extensions is causing a problem.

  • Why is firefox slower than before the reset?

The past 8 weeks Firefox has been extremely slow. I've tried safe mode and all the other web suggestions and finally did the 'Reset'. Now Firefox is slower than it was before the reset. Google, Duck Duck Go and IE. I've also tried Safari, which I didn't like, but all of them were faster than Firefox. Can anybody help me? I'm not that computer savvy to do a clean install and don't the $$ to have it done. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe you can do a clean install by following these instructions:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from [https://www.mozilla.org mozilla.org] (or choose the download for your operating system and language from [https://www.mozilla.org/firefox/all/ this page]) and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (or open the Firefox menu [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click the close button [[Image:Close 29]]).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.

  • Slow wireless but fast wired

Hi all, hopefully someone can help.
I have been getting lower speeds on my laptop for a few weeks now.  I'm getting 50+mb into the house but only max 15mb to the laptop and my phone. It often drops down to below 10 and sometimes 2!
Ive reset the modem and the infinity box on many occasions which helps get the speed back up to 13-15 when it's dropped to 2mb.  I've re-installed the bt software and have power cycled everything with no success.
I only recently tried the wited connection and it gets 50+mb.
I wondered if it was my wireless card which is an atheros and my laptop is an i5 acer so fairly new.  I've just ordered a wirless dongle to see if it helps.  The current atheros card does not seem to support and 'n' connection.
I've installed and run inssider and the best link score I can get is around 55-65.  I have no idea how to understand the inssider graph but guess this is not great.
I would really appreciate some advice.  Oh I am considering buying a home hub 4.0 as I am using the 3.0 version.
    Many thanks
    Steve

Don't keep resetting the modem. This could cause the DLM (Dynamic Line Management) to interpret this as a faulty line and lower your speeds.
Wireless speed will usually be slower than a wired connection. If you are getting the same sort of wireless speed on both your phone and your laptop this would tend to rule out the wireless card on your laptop.
It could be that if you turned off the smart wireless on the home hub and select a fixed channel it would improve.
As you have already downloaded inSSider you need to run it and look for the channel that has the least amount of networks on it. Once you have found this you need to set the homehub to that channel.
See link how to change channel
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/14094/~/how-do-i-change-the-wireless-channel-on-my-bt...
You may find an improvement on your laptop with a wireless dongle but this won't help your phone connection. Have a good read through the forum about the wireless performance of the HH4 before you decide to buy one. You may be better to buy another make of router.

  • Really slow wireless, but fast wired connection

I am having issues with my airport extreme base station. when i am connected with a cable, it goes up to 25 mb/s or what ever the measurement is called. But on wireless, i am barly at one or 2 sometimes. with a ping in the 500's? Is it simpley a placement issue or is there s

  • Why is Firefox Developer more stable and faster than regular Firefox?

So, I've have some great experiences with regular Firefox. It works great, nice themes, good plugins, security etc., but there's one thing that bothers me of Firefox on EVERY computer on EVERY operating system. Whenever I install Firefox, it is already slow, it stutters sometimes and sometimes it freezes. And it's not only my problem, many of my friends and classmates are using Chrome at this moment, because they complain about speed of Firefox. Now, for me that's not problem, I'm not patient person, but surely it is browser that will protect my privacy as opposed to Chrome.
Recently, somewhere, I saw download link saying something like "Mozilla Developer, for people like you", or something alike, I installed it and man, that browser is like 10x faster than regular Firefox AND Chrome AND Safari, I mean, this speed is outrageous! It's great, no sarcasm!
I don't get it, why is regular Firefox so slow and Firefox Developer so frickin' fast? Why? Can you maybe base your next Firefox update to Firefox Developer?
Sincerely Mozilla Firefox Developer lover. *muah*

@Tyler Downer Oke, good to hear it's next release of Firefox. But my profile isn't full, I don't really log in, totally fresh install of Firefox are mostly really sluggish. Mozilla really outdid themselves in speed and stability!! Great! A++ Mozilla!

  • Airport/Time Capsule - Slow via macbook pro wifi but fast via wired iMac

My wired imac that connects to the time capsule reads about 17mbs. But when I do the speed test that is connected wirelessly it runs at 2mbs. does anybody have any clue on what I am doing wrong? or why the speeds are so slow via my macbook?

    KenRN wrote:

i'm not sure you're doing anything wrong. for starters, a hardwired (gigabit 1000 mbps) connection is way faster than wireless-N (at best 300 mbps).
you could try if changing the channel your wireless network is broadcasting on brings about a bump in speed. you might be suffering from _*wireless interference*_.
perhaps one of your neighbor's wireless networks is interfering with yours. download iStumbler and note the channels of the other networks in your vicinity. select a channel that is as far away from those as possible.

  • Internet slow on mac but fast on windows

    Hello,
I recently bought this mac book pro...from Amazon last week.
    It has the Lion OS.
I have  a Belkin N Wireless router at home and comcast Internet.
I have a couple of windows lapstops at home (Lenovo) and now have this new Mac.
The internet on the mac seems to be teribbly slow compared to the Windows PC ?
I enter the url and then the blue background progress bar gets stuck at around maybe 10 to 20% and then not forward movement ?
speedtest.net told me that I have to update my flash playwer  (SW something)...which I did and then
speedtest.net gives me 25+_ mbps speed results but browsing mostly is extrmely painful....
after this the internet also seems to work ok, so was it the flash ? (not sure why that would be need for all sites or atleast most of the sites?)
I had instaled this flash last week also and then today when I updated my MAC with the apple updates...looks like it lost it again ?
not sure if the internet will be slow again tomorrow.... -:(
    Any ideas please ?
Also, every time I have boot the machine or bring it back from sleep I have to go to network diagnostics and get the internet back ?
no clue what is going on....
Any thoughts would be much appreciated !!
    Regards,
    Naresh

The information you're giving me is ambiguous, so I can't be sure that I'm giving you the right information either. However, it seems at least possible that there was an improvement when you logged in as guest, and no improvement when you booted in safe mode and logged in as yourself. I'll assume that's the case.
Back up all data if you haven’t already done so. Before proceeding, you must be sure you can restore your system to the state it’s in now. If you skip this step, no one but you will be responsible for the consequences.
    Quit Safari if it’s running.
    Step 1
Select /Applications/Safari in the Finder and open the Info window. There’s a checkbox in that window labeled “Open in 32-bit mode.” If that box is checked, uncheck it. Close the window.
Hold down the option key and select Go > Library from the Finder menu bar (Lion) or open the Library subfolder of your home folder (pre-Lion). Delete the following items from the Library folder (some may not exist):
    Caches/com.apple.Safari
    Caches/Metadata/Safari
    Saved Application State/com.apple.Safari.savedState
Leave the Finder window open. Try Safari again.
    Step 2
If it still doesn’t work right, quit, go back to the Finder, and move the following file to the Desktop:
    Safari/Bookmarks.plist
Then delete the following items (some may not exist):
    Cookies/Cookies.binarycookies
    Cookies/Cookies.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.LSSharedFileList.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.plist
    Preferences/com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
    PubSub/Database
    Safari
Try again. This time Safari should perform normally, but your settings will be lost. Select File > Import Bookmarks from the Safari menu bar. Import from the bookmarks file you moved to the Desktop. Recreate the rest of your Safari settings. You can then delete the old bookmarks file.
Note: This step will remove your Safari Extensions, if any, and their settings. If you choose to restore them, do so one at a time, testing after each to make sure you haven’t restored the problem.
If you don’t like the results of step 2, you can undo it completely by quitting Safari and restoring the items you deleted in that step from your backup, overwriting any that were created in their place. You don’t need to restore the files you deleted in step 1.

  • Help needed:MBP net connection slow on OSX but fast on Vista...

Ok..I've searched these forums for a while, seen lots of posts taking about people having problems with their airport card, routers and the like..but I haven't seen anyone having quite the same problem as me. My 17" 2.33Ghz C2D is linked to my 1Mb ADSL internet connection via an Aztech DSL600EW modem router. The problem is that the connection speed is really slow when I'm running the machine on OSX. I know it's an OSX thing cos the same machine, connected to the same router and running Windows Vista via Bootcamp will connect to the net ALOT faster. For example, if I'm viewing videos on youtube with OSX, I have to wait every few seconds for the video to buffer, but on Vista, the buffering is way ahead of the video. Another example would be downloading files...say from rapidshare. The typical download speed I get on OSX would be around 5-10Kbps, but with Vista, I get at least 25Kbps.
I'm quite new to OSX, and still trying to learn my way around the operating system. It seems such a pity for a really great machine with a really great operating system to be let down by slow internet connection. I hope someone out there will be able to help me sort this out. Thanks in advance.

Great, happy that it "seems to speed up things ..." Why not run the SpeedTest and "know?"
I use IPNetTuner ($30, free 21 day trial).

"*Why is it Sometimes Necessary To Tune TCP/IP*?
TCP/IP is not controlled by any manufacturer and is designed to work on almost any kind of underlying network with widely varying characteristics.
To meet this challenge, the protocol designers made TCP adaptive. TCP is self monitoring and optimizes its own behavior to match the network environment.
*Why can't somebody just write a utility that analyzes my network and automatically selects the optimum settings?* Such a tool would be both useful and popular. The answer is they already have, it's called TCP/IP, but sometimes it needs a little help.
In most cases, TCP works remarkably well all by itself. Tuning is needed in those cases where TCP doesn't quite get it right because the the network behavior is outside the expected range. Typical problems include:
Asymmetric connections that are much faster downstream than upstream.
High performance connections with relatively long latency ..."

  • Gui application slow with JWS but fast without

I've created and generated a GUI application into a jar file. Starting the application via
the java web start gives me a very poor performance. However starting the GUI
application by double clicking on the downloaded jar file works very smoothly and fast.
I don't want to lose the JWS options of automatic downloads of updated applications etc.,
any ideas of how to solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance.

I saw that suggestion when I did a search on problems like this.
It used to go fast, but for some unknown reason, it slowed down w/ CPU maxed at 100% a few weeks ago. The user swears nothing changed.
As for 1.4.1RC1, all I can tell you is I installed the english JRE, then tried the international JRE, then the international SDK for 1.4.1RC1 for Windows. I even uninstalled JRE 1.3.1_04 before that and also uninstalled before each install. In none of the installs did Java Web Start get installed on the desktop. I did a File Find using Windows for "javaws.exe" and it was not on any local drive. It's almost as if the JWS installer was not run automatically during the install process because I didn't see it pop up.
There are no disk space issues. This user is running Win2K and had 18GB (yes, gigabytes) free on his laptop.

  • Why does FIREFOX scroll (win8-64) but IE wont

''locking as a duplicate of https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/967021''
Firefox Nightly on win8 64 will scroll; somethings Ctrl-Alt-Del (just the three finger crash nothing in task manager) required to allow nightly to minimize; once that was required to free the scrolling.
IE won't scroll. Chrome allows navigation on one tab; other tabs may be present or created but they can not be selected; selecting another tab closes that other tab.
This is consistent for win 8 win 8.1 win 7 (separate partitions) and somewhat the case in Ubuntu 12.04
So it all sounds like hardware
Windows Explorer in the windows partitions won't let desktop icons be relocated.
    BUT NIGHTLY FIREFOX WORKS. WHY?
Is firefox memory use THAT different?

I don't believe there are many Nightly users coming to this forum, you might be better off posting where the Nightly users hang out - MozillaZine Builds forum.
