Pacman with 32 bit packages?

A chroot seems like an awful waste of space, especially since I would only need it for ZSNES, basically. I don't mind installing 32 bit libs, the "cleanliness" argument nonwithstanding. So I'd like to be able to just "sudo pacman -Sy zsnes", and have pacman just install every 32 bit library that 32 bit zsnes happens to need. But zsnes, and a few other programs with no 64 bit version (opera and wine and a few others I can think of) simply don't show up in the listing. Is there a way to make them do so?

No, there's not. Arch doesn't have an official mutli-lib setup. It makes things very complicated.

fuscia wrote:...(or, if you want to be cool, like me, dwm)?...
I second that DWM thing. Just install dwm/wmii (dwm i found was easier to configure cuz its just straight up C code for everything). You can install/use anything you want for programs. I used to use nautilus (from my gnome days). But i then switched to thunar/vim for my file managing. I use thunar when i wanna see thumbnails etc (which is not that often). thunar does not manage the desktop for me, and you dont need that with dwm anywyas, everything is a couple of keystrokes away...
The bad: changing smthg requires you to re code and recompile, but i'm cool with that, i even put my dwm folder in git . Plus it takes a full 3 and 1/2 minutes to compile (makepkg -e) install and restart dwm (install via pacman of course). Also no eyecandy at all, like any other tiling manager and the fact that it's tiling, if you come from windows gnome kde etc, its a little bit of a thing you have to get used to ,but you want a light one right, and dwm is the lightest of em all.

As Tribly said it would have to manage / fix the package yourself as they are no longer maintained by either the official repos or the AUR. Another possibility would be to uninstall them if you don't need them.

Please give me some help. Thanks.

I got the problem solved myself. The core dump happens when use OCI 32 bit libraries with STL string. It cores at destroying the STL string.
Add the option "-mt" to the compile command, the problem will go away.

    Pacman is broken now.
    pacman -Syu
pacman: error while loading shared libraries: libarchive.so.12: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Followed all the news and changes from year 2010. My problem was that I could not upgrade pacman to version 4 (is 3.5 npw). But now even the current version 3.5 is broken.
I will have to manually install pacman or what ?
Q: pacman is completely broken! How do I reinstall it?
A: In the case that pacman is broken beyond repair, manually download the necessary packages (openssl, libarchive, and pacman) and extract them to root. The pacman binary will be restored along with its default configuration file. Afterwards, reinstall these packages with pacman to maintain package database integrity. Additional information and an example (outdated) script that automates the process is available in this forum post.
    Lets try this...
It worked, now I have pacman version 4.

  • Why is Acrobat not installing with deployment package?

I have created windows 64 bit packages with AAMEE from the CS6 Design and web premium suite. From the full suite to Photoshop. Acrobat, to Acrobat stand alone. Each time Acrobat does not install. What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
When Acrobat is present in your AAMEE created packages, you first need to run the Exception deployer tool in pre mode, then deploy the main package and then run the Exception deployer tool again in post mode to deploy the remaining exceptions. Please read the documentation of exception deployer present in AAMEE deployment guide posted at http://www.adobe.com/devnet/creativesuite/enterprisedeployment.html
If you are using AAMEE 3.1, the Exeption deployer application is present inside the exceptions folder of your AAMEE created packages.
Let us know if you face any issues.

  • Pacman architecture + searching packages via interface

I am aware of the long discussions on GUI's for pacman. But we have to focus on the aspect of usefullness when talking about software development.
Pacman is a package installer etc.. and thus the link between a user and installing applications. Pacman is a very usefull tool/system: It is fast (using the wget option), doesn't breaks easily on dependencies, etc... . But pacman lacks on one big feature: searching!.
If I need to search for a application I will have to use the archlinux website! (using grep and pipe the output is not an option).
Of course I could use the pacman -Ss search-term command but then I could get a long list of unstructured results.
Also if i would like to batch some packages I have to type all of them at once -> this is not a preferable way of working. Whenever I like to install a number of packages at once I have to type all the names. Selecting them in a list is conveniance.
The kde application kpackage is perhaps the best way to implement this functionality. I found a lot of posts on a kpackage plugin but none very informative on the matther of existance.
I am not interested in a real GUI for pacman, but more specific information on pacmans architecture and possibilies to be implemented inside automatisation applications like kpackage.

This is simply not the case.

  • Making Pacman find installed packages

Hi, I have recently built a LinuxFromScratch system.
When I finished, I looked at installing package managers, and eventually settled on pacman.
Everything built OK, updated with -Syu fine.
However when I go to install a package with pacman -S package, it tries to download all the necessary packages like linux-api-headers, glibc, bash, etc.
All the basic system packages I have already installed...
The install then fails because these packages already exist.
    linux-api-headers: /usr/include/asm-generic/auxvec.h exists in filesystem
there is around 6000 lines of that.
Is there any way I can make pacman recognise these packages as installed?
Last edited by Wigguno (2010-11-29 02:51:11)

I think you are doing it wrong....
If you want to run LFS using pacman, you need to create the relevant packages yourself and then install them using pacman.  The first time will require you to "force" the installation of your packages over the LFS ones unless you prepare the package management back when you first enter your LFS chroot.  It can be done but is not entirely simple.
What you appear to be doing is grabbing packages from the Arch repos to install on your LFS system.  That is a really, really bad idea.  You either create your own (LFS) packages or install Arch,  Mixing is bad...
I highly recommend the "symlink" style package management system for LFS.  There are also scripts floating around that help you manage the symlinks so you can have the feeling of a package manager without really having one.   But I think you will soon find that maintaining a LFS system is not all it is cracked up to be and LFS is really just a learning tool.
As an aside, Arch started as a LFS system and we tend to follow the fairly simple base setup that is used there.

  • Pacman with multiple cachedir

    Hello,
I'm trying to install a package from a local file with pacman -U
this package has dependencies found in AUR which have been previously built and placed into /var/abs/local/pkg
I want pacman to automatically install all the dependencies.
    to do so I tried:
    1) in /etc/pacman.conf (as suggested by "man pacman.conf")
    CacheDir = /var/cache/pacman/pkg/ /var/abs/local/pkg/
    2) in the command line (as suggested by "man pacman")
    --cachedir /var/cache/pacman/pkg --cachedir /var/abs/local/pkg
All of them failed with "could not satisfy dependencies"
    Why does that happen?
Is it related to pacman only searching for packages into the database and not into the cache directories?
    How can it be achieved?
    Regards,
      vicencb

You need to create a pacman database.
Put all of those packages in a single directory.
Create a database in that directory using repo-add or repo-add_and_sign
Add an entry in /etc/pacman.conf for the new database. You must use the same name that you used when you created the database. The path should use the "file" scheme:
    Server=file:///path/to/directory
where /path/to/directory is the local path to that directory.
Optionally add the directory as a local cache in /etc/pacman.conf
Run pacman -Syu <package> where <package> is the name of the package in your custom local repository.
Note that you will have to rebuild all of those packages yourself when updated become available on the AUR. Pacman will not do it for you. Alternatively, you may use one of the many AUR helpers that provide dependency resolution when installing AUR packages.

  • Pacman with root disabled

I am running a rootless system (passwd -l root) because I like the idea of not having a common username to attack. However, the new pacman/makepkg upgrade wants to me enter the root password in order to either make or install packages. I'm not sure which of the two causes the situation because it only really shows up when I do a yaourt -Syu --aur. Is there a way to make it work well with a system that doesn't have a working root user?

Yeah, it's a Yaourt issue, because it says there's a bug in the Kernel or something like that (there is an error that gives some information). So it needs to be run as root for installing binaries. So for now what I do is just using pacman for precompiled packages and yaourt for the PKGBUILDs (you don't need the root account for installing PKGBUILDs, at least not on my machine).
As for re-enabling the root account, I thought you hadn't sudo, that would have been an issue
