Pages TOC

Hi,
I have got a new I Pad Air 2 Wifi 64 GB. Where I have Pages installed.
I am trying to insert the TOC(Table of contents). But, I could not find any menu or option available for that.
The templates provided also do not have any TOC included.
Could someone help me out on this? Is this feature available or not on Ipad pages?
Thanks
Veermanidaasan

Peter. Thank you, but... I did try insert TOC at the beginning of the document, placing the curser just before the first Title, on page one. The TOC arrives but it is mixed in with the existing document text for around 24 pages. Text -TOC -Text... Jumbled together.
I go no further because, I don't want my document stuck in this mixed up form. Also many paragraphs get numbered, even though they were not checked in the TOC box. I am using a two column format for the document, with some pages all text boxes, other pages all two column text.
So I undue, and try some other correction. This is with three items checked in the TOC; Title, Heading 1 and sub title. Each page of my document has one or two of these styles on it, in the body of the page, as you mentioned. I think I am following your instructions, they seem correct, but TOC is still dicey. Puzzled. • Unable to create a complate PDF (with title page, toc, chapter, backmatter, index) from a valid ditamap

Following is the ditamap i am using to create the PDF. This has booktitle, front matter, toc, chapter and backmatter. I am able to generate a PDF (complete with title page, toc, chapter, backmatter, index) using fop 0.25. However, when I try to create a pdf in FM 9.0, I get only the chapter. How can get the others through FM 9.0. Please provide a solution.

Unfortunately, default FM9 DITA does not support the automatic creation of the special bookmap files (toc, index, etc.). The only way to do it in FM9 is to manually add those generated lists to the book after you've generated it.
DITA-FMx 1.1 provides the ability to automatically create FM generated lists as well as apply numbering and pagination (and many other properties) automatically when you generate a book from a bookmap. For more info and to download a trial ..

  • Pages TOC lost when converting to ePub

Being new to Pages, I viewed the online tutorials to get me started. I have managed to create a short book and the formatting of the text seems fine in Pages. However, when I export the file to ePub, and view this in iBooks on the iPad, the Table of Contents has gone missing. I have downloaded Apple's template (ePub best practices for Pages) and the same thing happens when I export that to ePub: missing TOC..?

    You are funny guys.
    (1) If someone ask here about an application dedicated to iOS, it's normal to redirect him to the iWork to iOS forum because here you are in a forum dedicated to Pages for OSX and most of us don't use the iOS version.

In this case, the correct answer was reachable with the very simple request
epub AND toc which use as keywords two basic words available in the asker's question.

  • Pages - TOC , TOC is displayed through out the document

I have a 200 plus page document on Pages, with photos; a book. I've entered titles and subtitles and when I inert TOC, the new TOC appears but it splays all over the document pages, has repeated page numbers and is generally unusable.
MAC friends have mentioned that Pages has a problem with TOC. However, if I start the TOC sooner in the document, say on page 90, it works fine. So I'm looking for what's different between page 90 and page 221. Why does TOC not work as it should?

  • CS 5.5 problem with PDF links of master page TOC

    Hi
Lately i moved from ID CS5 to CS5.5 working on Windows 7.
All spreads of my document are based on a master page. This mater page includes a pane with a TOC. This TOC serves as navigation pane.
When exporting the document to interactive PDF, the TOC appears on all spreads but the TOC links function well on the first spread and will not function on the next pages.
The interactive PDF export settings include: "open in full screen mode" and "buttons and Media = include all".
I made a test, and added hyperlink on the master page next to the TOC, now the TOC links turnned active on all pages but the PDF will not open in full screen although i did not change the export settings. If i remove this extra hyperlink the TOC links problem returns.
I used the same document a lot in the past (with CS5) and did not have any such problem.
Hope i managed to describe this case well.
    Highly appreciate your help.

I trashed the two preference files as instructed.
    Expoerted the file to IDML.
Opened the IDML file and saved it as an ID file.

  • Generate TOC with Section Markers?

It's been a while since I've had to setup and create a TOC for a single file long document, but I'm pretty sure that I've created TOCs this way in the past. So, why won't the text in Section Markers show up in the TOC? Is it even possible to generate a TOC that has Section Marker text?
I'm using InDesign CS5 in Windows. I've got a single file document that I'm trying to generate a TOC for. I've designed a 16 page handbook in one inDesign file which includes a Cover page, TOC page, and seven "chapters".
I created separate sections for each "chapter" and used Section Markers at the top of the Master page for the chapter names. This is something I've done in the past for single file long documents with multiple chapters.
I've set the first page of each "chapter" as a new Section on the Pages panel. In the Numbering and Section Options for each page, I've checked Start Section, Automatic Page Numbering, Page Numbering Style: 1,2,3,4... and in Section Marker: I've put the "chapter" name in the text box.
I set up Paragraph and and Character Styles and used them throughout my document. When I set up the TOC I set up everything correctly, including my Section Marker style for the chapter names and a heading style that I used for all the sub headings in my file.
When I insert the TOC, the sub headings with their page numbers generate but the chapter headings which are Section Markers do not generate. Am I missing something or is it even possible to include the text for Section Markers in a TOC? I'm sure that it's worked in the past. Can anyone offer a solution for this?
    thanks,
    Kat

awesome! ...worked like a charm. I knew I was forgetting something.

  • TOC link with a subscript character does not work in PDF

    Hi,
has anyone come across with this? A heading has a subscript character and when you generate a PDF, the TOC page has no link. Other TOC heading links work out just fine, but all these that have subscript, these do not.
I have used Save As PDF and selected even create named destinations for all Paragraphs. Usually the TOC works fine even if that is not selected. A link with subscript does not work in either case.
I appreciate any help with this, thanks

    > The link is always terminated before any change in the character format. That's not a bug.
In user-authored manually-created hypertext links, sure. And in that case, we know that we have to re-apply the Marker to the various fragments of the desired text. I would not expect this behavior for a generated file where we have limited control over the auto-tagging.
    > Therefore if you have subscript or superscript applied, the link starts at the beginning of the paragraph and ends before the character format change (sub-/superscript).
It's not just format changes in body <$paratext> that break this. If you so much as apply a different format to the elements on the TOC Reference Page TOC (such as making the page number a different font), that breaks the HT of the page number in the PDF.
    > As far as I know Rick Quatro offers a FrameScript script for this problem.
Well, Adobe might consider this to be an Enhancement Request item, but I consider it to be a defect.
Is there anyone who would object if the TOC entries had functional full-string HT links by default? If so, Adobe could fix the problem, and have an Update tickbox to revert to legacy broken behavior.
In any case, the Unicode solution is not really a "work-around", even though I put it that way. For anything where Unicode has a glyph that you would otherwise implement as FrameRoman with a Character Format, use Unicode.

  • How to copy and paste a multi-page table of contents?

    Hi everyone.
I have a large document with a Table Of Contents extending over two pages. I'd like to copy the entire TOC then paste it into a new Pages document.
I have been able to copy the TOC however when I try to paste it into a new blank Word Processing pages document the following Error message appears: "The table of contents is empty because none of the paragraph styles selected in the Document Inspector are used in the document."
I can paste it into a blank Page Layout pages document however it pastes it into a text box with only one page of the TOC in it.  Even if the new Page Layout document has two pages and I extend the text box over the two pages only one page of the TOC is copied into the new Page Layout document. At the moment the only work-around I can do is to take a screen shot of each individual page of the TOC and paste them individually into a new pages document. I have tried exporting the entire original document to a plain text file however all the formating is lost (obviously).  I have also tried exporting the entire original document to a Word document (.doc) however it won't let me copy the multi-page TOC and paste it into a new Word document.
Is there any way to successfully copy a multi-page table of contents to a new Pages document?

You can try exporting the pages the TOC is on as rtf, text or pdf and transferring that, but I would question the value of a TOC for one document being in an entirely different document, which doesn't have what the TOC is pointing to.
Have you tried copying the T.O.C. Section from the document Thumbnails and pasting into the document Thumbnails of the 2nd document?
    Peter
How does one export individual pages from a Pages document?
I've also tried to copy the TOC section from the document thumbnail however I can't figure out how to select multiple pages in the document thumbnails.  It only allows me to select one at a time. Furthermore, when I do select a single page from the thumbnail section and attempt to drag and drop it into the the thumbnail section of the second document it picks up the whole document and wont allow me to move it from the thumbnail section of the original document.
Shift click to select multiple pages, and I did say Copy and Paste, not drag and drop.

  • TOC leader lines

The instructions for styling leader lines in a pages TOC sound really straightforward. But if I follow them, nothing happens.
I have to get this book to a printer today so any advice would be hugely welcome.

I'm not a TOC user, but I created one to see if I would have any problems formatting the leader lines. The controls seemed to work for me. What were you trying to do, how were you going about it and what happened?

  • TOC Layout in Printed Documentation

    Morning chaps,
Currently the Printed Documentation is chucking out a TOC that shows the Books, Topics and the Headings in the Topics. I was wondering if there is any way of formatting it so that it only generates Books and Topics?
    Luke.

    Rats. Sorry it didn't work.
You could do what I always did with Word docs - I didn't let RoboHelp create a TOC for me at all. Instead, I generated the printed doc based on the RH TOC (to get everything in the correct order) and used the Insert > Index and Tables > TOC in Word to specify just the heading styles I wanted to include. (This presupposes that you use a different style for subheadings within topics.)
I got really tired of doing this, so I built a little Word template with a title page, TOC page (where I inserted a TOC field as described), and a blank section at the end. I pasted my RH print output in, then just hit Update Field for the TOC. It was surprisingly quick, although it may be more steps than your workflow allows. Hey, this dates back to before you could create PDFs from Word!
It would be a really nice feature to be able to exclude subheadings from the TOC. Maybe the best course of action is a feature request.
PS - I'll be getting RH8 pretty soon, and I'll take a look at TOC generation then. Maybe they have solved this already! (And I hear that RH8's online help is a huge improvement over RH7's - you're not the only frustrated customer!)

  • Book Binding with a PDF Cover Page - cover page coming in blank

    Hi Matt,
I'm also trying to use the PDF Book Binder API.
I used the FOProcessor to convert a number of XSL files into PDF files and I'm nowing trying to use the PDFBookBinder to add a 'table of contents' to my PDFs.
Where you able to dynamically create the TOC?
And if so, I would be grateful if you could provide some detail on how it was done.
P.S. Sorry to be answering your question with a question.
    Many Thanks

  • Using pages to publish on Kindle

I would like to create an ebook on pages and publish it for Kindle on Amazon.  Is is possible to preview the book on my kindle BEFORE I publish?  The amazon site makes it sound like the only way to do this (for Mac users) is to know HTML and use Kindle Gen.  I hope that is not true!
    Kate

First of all, I'm starting with regular Kindle.  Not for Kindle Fire yet.  So these are for the basic Kindle that most people have.  Kindle Fire has other options, like the use of color and such that I might take advantage of.  But this book is not printed in color so I didn't utilize color.
I did not reset my side margins.  I removed the top and bottom margins, setting them to 0 because Kindle defines them, not the document.
Tiffs are fine BUT are huge in file size.  The image files cannot be huge because they will not load properly and could crash the Kindle.  My book, printed, is 8x10x440 pages with 27 full page b&w images and THOUSANDS of links with 954 anchors.  That's a lot of book.  That's even MORE ebook.  So concession must be made for the sake of the ebook on any non Kindle Fire ebook.  And remember too, that it seems that all the different readers have different specs.  I'm starting with Kindle and working my way out.  It's a major p.i.t.a. in general but not nearly as painful as I thought in Pages.  Actually, Pages simplifies the process a LOT.
Considering that the images are b&w (mine are to start with) and you know how to convert a color image into a great b&w image in Photoshop by doing more than simply desaturating it (I know how to do that...simply desaturating will turn a color such as red to black so it looks awful.  There is a simple process to convert, but desaturating is not it.) Why use a huge file like a tif for a b&w graphic?  It is simply ego and not common sense.  A gif that is set for 16 shades of grey, dithered and then saved at 300 dpi then resized down will look utterly amazing.  AND and the file size is quite small in comparison to a tiff.  AND a jpg isn't even as clear.  Other images will work...but they weigh down the file.  And my file data, alone is huge.  And the images are simply iimages....for looks not information.  That part is up to the writer.  You experiment.  This is what works for my book.
I insert the image at 300 dpi, into Pages...it's big.  I resize it manually from there.  Especially for the smaller images like fancy drop caps, that after I look at the document on my Kindle itself, I may want to adjust a bit.  Which is easily done in the original document, rather than having to redo the image, etc.
I have examined my Kindle ebook by downloading the converted file from KDP and installing it on my Kindle and I fudge around with it from there.  It looks amazing.  the links all work (which is what I was stressing over) and I can't believe it was SOOOO much easier using Pages than other apps that I tried on the Mac and on the PC's (which make me crazy).
I've been fortunate to not have to do a lot of fixing in the HTML file that must be downloaded from KDP because the Pages HTML file is pathetic, so I don't even mess with that ever.
KDP is NOT converting and fixing my formatting.  There is nothing to fix.  The book looked the same when I put the document on my Kindle BEFORE I uploaded it to KDP.  After I loaded it onto KDP.  After I downloaded it as a book from Kindle.  I'm quite impressed.  I'm ready to do my others now.  That was the MOST complex of the books, and the largest.
The others are novels, poetry.  Such and such.  But the real challenge with Kindle now, and I will also publish it on iPad, etc. will be a young child's book that is in color, will have media and all that for Kindle Fire and other such devices.  I have yet to take on that challenge.  It's an entirely different animal.
When I was first starting my project (back when I had began it in Appleworks and then moved it to Pages midway) I was reading all the negativity and began to panic.  I almost bought Word.  But then I experimented with Word on one of the kid's PC's and it was so complicated and I thought this isn't going to be any better.  I tried NeoOffice and it could not handle the size of my document with all it's links.  I tried some other wp program Abi something or another and it was so slow with such a large document it could barely scroll to the bottom of a page.  Taking it up into Calibre was a joke.  Etc., etc.
I am still using Pages 1 for crying out loud!  My computer is so obsolete and my memory is limited.  I need a new machine badly.  But it was all handled quite well.
The one big problem that I had with this particular document is that because my memory is so low, I have 768MB of Ram (which is laughable) and cannot add more because I have a Powerbook 13" and it cannot go up more than that.  I could not export into a PDF file for Create Space.  I freAKeD!  I called Create Space and they told me to download their template, which is a Word template and use that.  So I did.  I downloaded their template, opened it in Pages, copy pasted my entire book into it from my original Pages document and then if you cannot, for any reason, convert to a PDF you simply upload THAT document made in the template to Create Space and it automatically converts to a PDF within their system.  Like magic.  Whew!  One really good thing about that template is that it has a TOC box that I used and it worked better than the Pages TOC did.  So I copied pasted that box into other documents and my goto TOC :-D
You gotta' do whatcha' gotta' do.  Thank goodness there are work arounds when needed.  However, I've found that MANY folks will tell you how to build a clock when you ask for the time.
This book was an education.  From there on it will be easy.
    I hope I clarified.
    Peace.

  • Is it a best practice to have a template with one master page?

I am a newbie FM 11 writer and am cleaning up some unorganized books. Should I copy one set of Master Pages to all files in the book. Currently my TOC and certain other files have unique master pages. I would like to set up our books using best practices and would like input from the community. Thanks.

There are two schools of thought on this. The specific sub-template approach or the "kitchen sink" approach.
In the "kitchen sink" (i.e. everything, including the...) approach, the FM template is loaded with everything required for the project in a single file. It's simple to deploy, import it to all files and you're good to go. However, the author may have to deal with all sorts of superfluous tags and page layouts in some specific file types, like the cover pages, TOC, Index and other generated files. The onus is on the author to select the correct items to use from the multitude of choices.
The sub-template approach is modular approach where one creates the various components in separate template files, e.g. paragraph and character tags, tables, page layouts, etc. and combines to create specific templates for the various book components. These component-combined templates only have the minimum that is required for each type of document component. This is a lego-like approach and it provides more flexibility (IMHO) with modifying, updating and creating new templates. This is easier (perhaps less intimidating would be a better term) for the author to use as their choices are much more limited in any given context. However, they do have to apply the correct templates to the specific book components.
In all cases, you need to document the usage of all components in the template(s), so authors will know the intent of each and every tag, table, sttyle, page layout, etc.

  • How can I make leading .... appear in toc. P1 is broken, P2 is fine.

Help please - I am desperate.
I have a 2-page toc in a new  book. I imported the toc format from a good toc and now page 2 looks great, but I cannot make the leading dots appear on page 1 and I need this damn book in one hour.
    Thanks
    Phil

    > What is a prototype para please
In the fileTOC.fm, on Reference Page TOC, this stuff:
    openObjectId <$relfilename>:<$ObjectType> <$ObjectId>
    <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
    <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
      <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
      <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
      <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
        <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
        <$paratext>>...<$pagenum>
You need to click in each one to find out what xyzzyTOC paragraph tag it controls.
If the >... is missing, you either have no tab in the proto, or no tabs defined for the tag (or tabs that don't work: toow low, out-of-column, irrational justification, etc.).
