TOC leader lines

The instructions for styling leader lines in a pages TOC sound really straightforward. But if I follow them, nothing happens.
I have to get this book to a printer today so any advice would be hugely welcome.

I'm not a TOC user, but I created one to see if I would have any problems formatting the leader lines. The controls seemed to work for me. What were you trying to do, how were you going about it and what happened?

• TOC Problem: Leader Lines disappeared after I've changed the font

Hi,
I am having a strange problem with Pages (I use the version in iWork 08). I am currently writing on my dissertation. I have used Helvetica while typing because it reads better on the screen. However, after changing the font to Georgia (for the final printout), my TOC got all messed up.
First, I had beautiful leader lines that looked like this:
Heading one ................. [page number]
This was the default option. I did not change a thing. Then, after changing the font and the margins of the document, the leader lines disappeared and I could not get them back, even after setting them manually. Right now the entries look like this:
Heading one [page number]
...which is very ugly.
Any help is highly appreciated. I do not want to hand in the paper like this. (Also, switching the font back to Helvetica did not bring back the leader lines. This seems to be a strange bug in Pages.)

Sounds to me as if the tab that the leader lines were attached to have been lost in your changed style, or have popped off the right hand margin. Leaders go with the tab which should be holding the right hand text in place. No tab, no leader.
I have noticed a bug with tabs in Pages where if you have multiple tabs that should fit within a given space, the last one may not register and falls over to the next line.

• Table of content, third level leader lines

Hello i have atable of content that works properly now, except for the fact that third level chapters, dont have leader lines to the page number
1 blabla .............5
1.1 blasecond.....7
1.1.3 third lvl 9
I want that third lvl style to also have leader line,
i tried following this article http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Pages/3.0/en/c3pg49.html
but the leader menu is disabled...
thank you
charles.

Hi Charles,
If you select the text of the TOC level you're trying to edit, go to the Text Inspector, click on "Tabs," and then go down to "Tab Stops" and select the number that's within the box, the option should no longer be greyed out.
Hope that helps! Let me know if it doesn't.

• Leader lines - possibility to change the lenght?

when i create an index and i insert the leader lines between the title of the paragraphs and the number of the page, Pages insert the lines until the number; in my opinion Pages insert too many lines (dots).
i make an example:
Title of the paragraph......................................................5
i'd like to have:
Title of the paragraph..................................................... 5
you see that the last line (dot) is not inserted; is there a way to apply this thing?
thanks

There is a letterspace in front of the five. remove it.
Understand what a leader tab is. It is the jump between the end of one lot of text and the next tab setting in that line. The leader tab simply fills that gap with whatever pattern of line you have chosen.
It is not just hammering away at the fullstop key. If you see a gap in the line, run your cursor over it and you will find it is filled with something usually a letterspace.
You can turn on the invisible characters by:
+Menu > View > Show Invisibles+ to see what is happening.
btw You can change the scale of line (larger or smaller dots for example) by altering the point size of the tab.

• How to create Leader Lines for Pie Chart Labels

I like Numbers but the restrictions they force are sometime just too much.
Example: Labels
The restriction of only being able to move a label of a wedge on a parallel axis is ridiculous. Here Excel clearly out shines Numbers.
I want an option to add a leader to a "Value" label so I can move it away from an area that is too crowded or the space for it is limited.
Yes, I know I could just not turn Labels on in Numbers and then use a text box to place the value anywhere I wish and then draw in a leader to fit my needs. But that is no solution just a horrible work-around.
Come on Apple. You've started a nice product here but gee-whiz, golly-gee, it's hard to adopt your products as MS replacements when so many basic features are missing.

AlbertEinstein,
And I don't understand why you are even posting here. What in your reply was useful to my issue? Seriously, if you're here on this board just to spout opinions, might I suggest you take up blogging.
As for me, I'm here to try to find an answer to my problem. If you're knowledgable and know that it can't be done then just saying so the way Badunit did. It wasn't the answer I was looking for but at least he was trying to be constructive.
OK, so to your point. You've been using spreadsheets since Visicalc, good for you. My issue isn't with the spreadsheet part of Numbes, but rather with the charting technology.
Well I was a draftsperson when all there was, was boards and T-Squares. And a common rule is if your information is too close, overlaps, etc to be understood then you use a leader to move it to an area where it is not so cluttered.
Your issues with OpenOffice and MS Office I can't address because I'm not interested in either of those products within this thread.
So please if you have a suggestion as to how to solve my issue then I welcome your comments. But if you're here just to "complain" about others complaining I can just ask, what's your point?

• Two different TOC styles in one Pages document?

I'm a new Pages 2.0.2 user with a large document with two different tables of contents 20 pages apart. I'm trying to format them differently using different TOC styles but when I change one's style the other one changes as well. Anything I do format-wise to one goes over to the other as well. I'm hoping this is just something I have yet to learn about the product. Any thoughts?

Hi
Someone else might know but this doesn't look good, taken from Pages Help:
"Changing the appearance of text in a table of contents
You can change the appearance of text in a table of contents and also add a leader line between a TOC heading and its associated page number.
To change the appearance of text in a table of contents:
Select the TOC heading you want to change. When you select a TOC heading, all the entries of the same heading type are automatically selected; headings cannot be individually selected.
Click View in the toolbar, and then choose Show Styles Drawer.
The Styles drawer displays a list of table of contents (TOC) styles. The TOC style that corresponds to the selected entry type is also selected.
Do one or more of the following:
To change the appearance of text, change it as you would format any paragraph text. For example, choose Format > Font or use the Text Inspector to make edits.
To create leader lines from a TOC heading to its associated page number, click Inspector in the toolbar, click the Text Inspector button, and then click Tabs. Click the value for the TOC in the Tab Stops list, and then choose a line style from the Leader pop-up menu."

• TOC strangeness...

Wonder if anyone can suggest something...
Been working in a variety of Pages documents, using the TOC feature, which I love. All working great, but then suddenly (after I'd reduced the font size in one TOC style) the TOC stopped having the leading line from the Heading to the page number - although the tab stop is still there in the style (and this has happened on all TOC styles). Odder still, this effects other previously-created documents (where I haven't changed the TOC style) - and even if a document is opened in Pages on another Mac.
Any idea how this might have happened, and how I can get those nice leading lines to work again automatically?
Thanks in advance...

Hey -
Thank you very much for the reply... in the meantime I've sort of fixed it/worked out something... the page numbers stopped moving, and leading lines disappeared, because the tab stops were suddenly outside the right boundary of the pages. Moving them back within the width got everything back. Why this changed on all documents at once I have no idea, especially as I hadn't changed the default size or messed with the blank template while it happened (though I've been extensively customizing it since I started)... but either way it's helped me learn how that feature actually works, so I guess I'll put it down to fate... and thus deem it a feature

Posts: 1 Please help: I've been using a pages template for my 90 pages plus master's thesis. In general things have been fine. I'm using the template called, Research Paper, I believe.
Dennis thank you for your reply, below is original copy. Yeah I get to the point you suggest. I'm in TOC, I click the tab (6.5,is that inches?) then click the line style, and then what, nothing happens. After I do that, are the page numbers that are right next to the section headings, supposed to line up on the right with a leader line connecting them to the Section Titles? I'm wondering if I may need to reinstall my iWork software? Or do a manual TOC, which I'm not crazy about, especially since I bouught the software just for this project. Thanks a bunch. Gary
Setting up the table of contents was easy, and I made some font changes and so forth. And my major headings have been picked up and incorporated into the TOC.
The problem is trying to create "leader lines" between the Section title and the page number as described on page 104 #3 b in the Users Guide. It seems like they are missing a step. I choose the line style, but can't incorporate it. And it seems to be "locked" as I can't type anything. I tried the online help section, sometimes it's different, but no luck. I'd really like

Thanks guys. When I make a simple test document, it works fine. But when I insert a TOC into my document the page number is on a different line than the name of the section title, and I can't get the number on the same line as the section title. Although it is a long paper, it is laid out in a simple manner, one font size and type for text and one for Section headings. The section headings are getting picked up but they do not open in the proper allignment as they did in my test. hmmmm AND when I try to enter the table of contents from the templete, even though I put the insertion point at the beginning of the document, it puts it at the end. Frustrating. Like I said, the test mini document was a breeze and I saw how it is supposed to work, but for some reason it doesn't. Thank you Gary

• Retrieve n and n-1 rows on the same line

In a database I am trying to get the latest employee information and the previous entry. The latest entry can be determined by the fact that DATEFIN is empty and the previous entry is returned by MAX(DATEFIN). All previous entries have a DATEFIN value
So I wrote a query which returned both the lines per employee. i.e. n and n-1
Actually what is needed is to compare certain fields of each line, so I need to show employee n and n-1 on the same line. This time I used LEAD so emp,date,field1,Lead(field1,1) etc etc.
As all the employee lines are returned, I used a minus function to remove all those where the DATEFIN IS NOT NULL, given that the LEAD line returned the information required BEFORE the minus removed it.
However, I am still getting n and n-1 rows, even though the minus part run by itself removes n-1,n-2... rows.
Question
How can I structure the minus or LEAD query just to get the n row and n-1 LEAD information

Assuming that the sr.salarie_id column identifies the employee I think you need to partition by it, not order by it in the analytic functio. If it does not identify the employee, then you need to partition by whatever uniquely identifies an employee. I would likely structure it something like this:
SQL> with t as (
2 SELECT 1 emp_id, TO_DATE('01-jul-2010', 'dd-mon-yyyy') dt, 'Jul' descr
3 from dual union all
4 SELECT 1, TO_DATE('01-aug-2010', 'dd-mon-yyyy'), 'Aug' from dual union all
5 SELECT 1, TO_DATE('01-sep-2010', 'dd-mon-yyyy'), 'Sep' from dual union all
6 SELECT 1, TO_DATE('01-oct-2010', 'dd-mon-yyyy'), 'Oct' from dual union all
7 SELECT 1, TO_DATE(NULL), 'Current' from dual union all
8 SELECT 2, TO_DATE('01-jan-2010', 'dd-mon-yyyy'), 'Jan' from dual union all
9 SELECT 2, TO_DATE('01-mar-2010', 'dd-mon-yyyy'), 'Mar' from dual union all
10 SELECT 2, TO_DATE('01-may-2010', 'dd-mon-yyyy'), 'May' from dual union all
11 SELECT 2, TO_DATE('01-jul-2010', 'dd-mon-yyyy'), 'Jul' from dual union all
12 SELECT 2, TO_DATE(NULL), 'Current' from dual)
13 SELECT emp_id, curr_dt, last_dt, curr_descr, last_descr

• PDF TOC in Japanese illegible

Hi all,
I generate Japanese PDF documents with DocBook and Apache FOP (Version 1.0). For the Japanese text I embed MSP Gothic and also MS PMincho.
Both fonts are available on Windows 7 by default. When I look into the properties of the PDF document, all fonts are embedded correctly after the build process.
The Japanese text is displayed correctly in the complete document.
The problem I have is that the table of contents (TOC) on the left hand side in the Acrobat Reader is not displayed correctly. This problem only occurs in documents with Japanese letters. In documents with Latin letters, this problem does not occur. Currently I use Adobe Acrobat Reader version 11.0.3 to open the Japanese PDFs.
The problem with the table of contents in Japanese is as follows:
If the text is too long to fit into the line of the TOC, no line breaks occur but the line breaking option is activated. Additionally, the line height is too small so that only half of the line is displayed in the TOC.
Please see the attached screenshot for a demonstration of this problem:
However, to make this problem even more complicated, this problem does not occur on every PC where the PDF file is viewed. It seems to be arbitrary whether or not this problem occurs as we tested it on PCs with the same operating system (Windows 7) and with the same versions of Adobe Acrobat and sometimes it occurs, sometimes it doesn’t. Therefore this problem is hard to reproduce.
Please see the attached screenshot for a demonstration of the correct view:
Has anyone had this problem, too? Is this a known or common problem? Does anyone have a workaround for this problem?
Any help is appreciated.
Thanks a lot in advance. Best regards,
tester

That is always a tough thing, and most difficult to diagnose! The first thing I would suspect in such a case is that the Adobe Reader settings (Preferences) may be different on different systems?
Are these documents confidential, or can you share such a PDF with us? (See http://forums.adobe.com/thread/918624)

• Small window changes in line printer

We are using a line printer EPSON FX-980. We are using sapscripts to print.
We are printing in a not so flexible format. We have the formats already pre-printed and we need to make small changes to adjust the output.
Almost everything is alright, except some variables that cross some pre-printed lines.
We only need to move a window aprox. 1mm down to adjust the exit.
However, when we try to make small changes, the windows jumps a whole line, not like laser printer that adjust to fractions.
For example, my problematic windows is in 28 ln. No matter if I change it to 28,01 or 28,5, the widow jumps to 29ln.
I tough it was the printer couldn't print small details, but I drew several lines with small spaces between in ms paint and it prints them fine. So I'm guessing is the driver.
I already used the two drivers for line printers, also changed the device type line lenght and nothing has been resolved.
Is there a way to do this?

hi,
Modifying the SWIN (SAPWIN) Device Type
The SWIN device type allows you to use any printer or fax that the Microsoft Windows Print Manager can use, regardless of whether the SAP R/3 System has a device type for the corresponding device. In this case, it is actually the Microsoft Windows Print Manager and Windows driver that format a document and make an output-ready data stream out of it.
Modifying SWIN is a little different than working on other device types because SWIN does not deliver an output-ready data stream. Rather, it converts the internal SAP R/3 document format into a special SAP R/3 formatting language. The SAPSprint service understands this formatting language. SAPSprint, in turn, converts the SAP R/3 formatting commands into Microsoft Windows GDI commands, which the Print Manager and the Microsoft Windows device driver can use for preparing print-ready output data.
The upshot: rather than modifying printer commands in actions and print controls, in SWIN you need to work with SAP R/3 formatting commands. The SWIN formatting language is documented in this section.
SWIN Device Format Actions
With SAPscript formats, SWIN does not use the Printer initialization or Reset actions. Enter a comment line -- # Not used -- in these two actions in the SAPscript device formats in your copy of SWIN. This ensures that the actions will be ignored when they are called during output. SWIN list formats do use the Printer initialization and Reset actions.
In your copy of SWIN, insert commands only in the device type format actions that the SAP R/3 standard device type SWIN uses.
Frequently Made Changes to SWIN
● Adjusting the position of output on the paper.
In a SAPscript form definition, positioning information refers to the absolute dimensions of the paper to be used for outputting the form. However, the position information in SAPscript forms is added to the coordinates system of the target output device during execution to determine where the form objects are to appear on the output page.
Since output devices use different origins for their coordinate systems, this means that SAPscript and the spool system must offer a way to adjust form positionings to reflect the coordinate system used by an output device.
You can adapt your forms to the differing coordinate systems of output devices in the device definition, where individual printers and fax machines are made known to the SAP R/3 spool system.
Set the fields: Choose Tools ® CCMS ® Spool ® Spool Administration, change the corresponding output device, and switch to the Output Attributes tab page. There, you can set the horizontal positioning in Horizontal move, the vertical positioning in Vertical shift. Positive values (> 0) move the output down or to the right. Negative values in the format xxx move the output up or to the left. No decimal values are permitted. For fine positioning, use MM (millimeters) or PT (points, 10 points / inch).
If a window in a form definition is to appear 1 cm from the left edge of the paper, the window will actually be printed 1.5 cm from the left edge of the paper on a Hewlett-Packard LaserJet printer. The LaserJet starts its X-axis coordinate system 0.5 centimeter from the left edge of the paper. On a PostScript printer, on the other hand, the window will start 1 cm from the left edge of the paper, because PostScript uses the physical boundaries of the paper for its coordinate system.
You can adjust the positioning of the output on the HPLJ4 (LaserJet) printer by entering -5 MM in the Horizontal move field in the second screen of the device definition of each HPLJ4 printer.
● Setting Basic List Print Properties: Character pitch, line leading, type size.
To make these adjustments, you need to change the Printer initialization action in the X_ formats in your copy of the SWIN device type.
There, you can adjust the character pitch (character spacing), leading (line spacing), and type size with the following commands:
Property
SWIN Formatting Command to Use
Character pitch
ec is the type size in twips (20 twips = 1 point).
For example: eS200X sets the type size to 10 points (200 twips / 20 = 10 points).
The SWIN data stream protocol is an internal SAP R/3 format that may change without prior notice. SAP intends to make only upwardly compatible changes to the SWIN protocol. That means that you should always be able to use the newest version of SAPSPrint, even if you have not upgraded your SAP R/3 System itself.
SAP guarantees, however, only that the SWIN device type will function correctly with the development level of the SAPSPrint transfer program that is specified for a particular SAP R/3 Release.
SAP Printing Guide (BC-CCM-PRN)
Implementation considerations
The SAP Printing Guide describes the functions of the SAP Spool System. This system was designed to be used on various platforms. SAP provides its own spool service and a spool database so that users do not have to deal with operating system-specific issues.
The platform-independent SAP spool system is responsible for the output of forms and documents. The data to be printed is first temporarily stored (“spooled”), then formatted, and finally transferred to a host spool system to be output. You can control all of your output from the SAP System and do not need to arrange further processing in the host spool system.
The following are among the main tasks of the SAP spool system:
· Processing and managing print requests
· Administering output devices
· Technical mapping of the output devices in the SAP System
Features
Among other things, the SAP Printing Guide describes the following:
· Print Process in General
An introduction for users and administrators, in which the print process from document to printout is explained in general.
The focus of the introductory sections is the Output Controller (transaction SP01), which can be used by both administrators and users to manage print requests.
· Spool Access Authorizations
This sections and its subsections describe the access authorizations required specifically for the spool system.
· Possible Print Architecture and Print Methods
The various print architectures are described in this section and its subsections, that is, the different constellations of hardware and software components with the corresponding access methods: Each architecture also requires a specific print method, such as:
· Local printing: The spool server (application server with a spool work process) and host spool system (operating system spooler) are on the same host.
· Remote printing: The spool server and the host spool system are on different hosts.
· Frontend printing: Print data are to be printed on the default printer of the user’s PC.
· Printing using SAP GUI for HTML
· Output Devices in the SAP Spool System
Output devices must be defined in the SAP System so that they can be addressed from the SAP System.
You do this using device definitions with which the devices are managed in the SAP System.
This link takes you to a description of these device definitions and their printer settings.
· Spool Server
This section explains what a spool server is, how you define it, and what using logical servers and alternative servers involves.
· Device Types for SAP Output Devices
Device types are explained in this section. A device type in the SAP system is the category of printer to be addressed. The information in the device type, such as font selection, page size, and character set selection is used to convert a document from the internal SAP format to a device-specific, printable data stream.
· Connecting to an External Output Management System (OMS)
This section explains how you can connect the SAP spool system to an external Output Management System.
· Maintaining the Spool Database
This link takes you to a section explaining how you maintain your spool database to ensure optimal performance.
· TemSe Database Storage
This section and its subsections explain what TemSe is and how you can manage TemSe objects.
· Analyzing Printing Problems
This link takes you to examples that will provide you with support in identifying and correcting errors
Printing from the SAP System
Features
Using the SAP output system, you can output many types of documents on output devices such as printers or fax machines: purchase orders, invoices, delivery note, payroll documents, e-mails, report lists, and so on.
Process Flow
Unlike most other programs, which forward print requests directly to the printer, the SAP System temporarily stores the print data. If you want to print data in an SAP System (online or in the background) and choose a print function, such as , the SAP output system creates two types of print requests:
1. a spool request, which temporarily stores the data to be printed in the system
2. an output request, which sends the data to the desired output device
If you want your document to be printed immediately on your printer without temporary storage, you must have made a setting in the print window for immediate output. In this case, the spool request and output request are generated immediately, and the data is printed.
If you want to temporarily store the data, do not choose print out immediately. You can display the temporarily stored print request (spool request) in the output controller and/or print it at a later time

• ALV: how to handle event for multi (lead) row selection ?

Hi,
I use editable ALV and configure it for multi (lead) selection. Works fine.
But I could not find any event handler for reading the selected lines.
There is only the Event handler ON_LEAD_SELECT: this works only for 1 line
(the lead line). But I could not read multi lines. Who can help?
Thanks in advance, Christian

Hi Christian,
did you try a custom button?
Try a call
node->GET_SELECTED_ELEMENTS
I cant remember if ALV sends event when multi-selection is on for each row selection.
ie as each row is selected, do you get control ?
If so, then you should still be able to call node->GET_SELECTED_ELEMENTS .
regards
Phil.
