Pagination Incorrect When Making PDF from Word

When making a pdf from Word using the "Fully Functional PDF" setting in Acrobat 8 Professional, I often get incorrect Acrobat pagination that changes to "1 of 1," 2 of 2," etc. instead of "1 of 2," 2 of 2."  Typically, I download both Acrobat and Windows updates, but today that did not help. The only way the pdf pagination is correct is if I choose the "Quick and Simple PDF" selection, but the graphics display is not satisfactory.
So my workaround today was to hard number the document. Anyone else have this problem? This has been an annoying and intermittent problem since we upgraded to MS Office 2007.

I suspect that you will find the same behavior if you print to paper (worth trying for a few pages). If so, then you are looking at a WORD bug. I know that one version of WORD had such a bug. But then, it also seems that MS put some hooks in the process for PDF creation, but that is only a conjecture. Anyway, be sure you have updated WORD. Acrobat does not change things, but gives you what was sent to it -- the reason I would strongly suggest this is probably a WORD issue. However, I rarely claim it says there is a bug in WORD, just highly likely.
This has been reported before and I think the update was the solution. You might want to do a bit of searching.

  • Fonts not embedding when making PDF from PM 7.1

In making a PDF from a PM file, I am having trouble getting the fonts to embed.  The interesting thing is that the fonts that are not embedding are Times Roman and Arial; other fonts are being embedded.  These fonts are installed and I have the "Embed Box" checked in the job type font options.
I'm using Windows XP SP2 OS and Acrobat 7.0 Pro.
Should the fonts be in a special folder ? Not sure what I'm mimssing here . . . .
I had SP3 installed for the OS and was having no trouble . . . . but then InDesign CS2 would not open PM files . . . At your recommendation I uninstalled SP3 but had to reinstall the OS which meant reinstalling PM and In Design CS2.
    Any suggestions?

PM7 will run just on WinSP3 provided it's a clean install. That is, you install WinXP SP2, clean, straight the setup disk, and then apply the service pack 3 update.  The usual problem is the unnecessary junk which Windows collects which screws things up.  See here: PM7 and WinXP SP3
I've now moved onto the Win7 and not even bothered with PM7, so I'm going on memory.
If InD CS2 says your PM files are corrupted, then I'd be worried.  It's time to run diagnostics and make sure you have backups.
Re:  the fonts, I suggest you check all your style palettes.
You could just create a PS file using any PS printer driver with the output as FILE:, and the load Distiller, input the PS file and create the PDF.  That's about as fool proof as it gets.
Also see my now ancient trouble shooter about creating PDFs using the Export… AdobePDF… macro here: Installing and Setting Up PM7's Export… Adobe PDF… using the “Application” CD-ROM   In this cae, make sure you are running PM7.01a - the update is here: PageMaker 7.0.1 update - English as there were some glytches when creating PDFs in the earlier macro.

  • Blurry text in Acrobat X Pro when creating PDF from Word 2010

I created a  PDF document from Word 2010 and while most of the pages and formatting looks fine, about 1/5 of the pages have blurry Arial 10 pt text (it looks as if it was Arial bold out of focus). Has anyone experienced this problem?

    Thanks for the reply.

  • Automatically display the Bookmarks panel when generating PDFs from Word

I have about 500 PDFs to generate and I like to have the Bookmarks Panel & Page as the setting in File Properties - Initial View - Navigation Tab. I am generating the PDFs directly from Word using the Acrobat Plugin. I was hoping I wouldn't have to make this setting manually for every PDF...

You can use a action in Acrobat X Pro to set the initial view of all documents in a folder.

  • Pagination changes when creating PDF from FM file

Using Structured FM 7.2p158, Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1.3. I have updated a chapter with a graphic and want to send a specific page to a colleague. Tried to print the individual page to a file, then distill that print file to a PDF file; Distiller flushed it, whether I used the Acrobat PDF printer or my regular printer.
Next tried printing the entire chapter, which works, but the PDF pagination is changed from the original FM file. Tried setting to "Standard" and "High Quality Print" but still get the same result.
    Any suggestions, please?
    Thanks,
    Cheryl

    Cheryl,
You should only be using the AdobePDF printer instance when working on FM files. If you changed to a different printer and created output using that to send to Distiller, then there can be a number of issues, especially if you've somehow used the printer fonts (you may have substituion enabled in the printer driver giving you different metrics). The SetPrint utility from Sundorne <http://www.sundorne.com/FrameMaker/Freeware/setPrint.htm> will ensure that your default printer in FM is always the AdobePDF. Note: you can still manually switch in FM if you need to directly output hardcopy to your system printer.
If Distiller "flushed" your output, then there should have been a log file generated that specifies what the error was. This might help provide some solution to your original problem.
The joboptions settings in Distiller wouldn't be creating the reflows that you're seeing. It's probably one of the fonts, printer instance, graphic size (dimension/scale) that caused your problem.

  • Why is PDFMaker using faux italics when creating pdf from Word?

    Hi,
I have a word 2013 document using an opentype font, namely The Sans. Some of the words using that font are in italics.
If I print (Ctrl+P) the document to Adobe PDF, the pdf looks fine, and the fonts embedded in the PDF as reported by Acrobat are The Sans and The Sans Italic.
But if I use the PDFMaker plugin, the words in italics use some kind of faux italic, where the regular letters are just slanted. The font embedded in the PDF as reported by Acrobat is only The Sans.
I got sick of trying every possible parameter in the Word plugin, any idea of what to? Printing the document top pdf and then adding all the bookmarks by hand would be excruciatingly tedious.
I could also open the PDF in acrobat and select every occurence of an italic word, then re-set it to italic, which then uses the right italic version of the font, but come on...
    Best,

Basically using the printer will always embed and use the italic font, e.g. with the standard, press or high quality print settings. Even though there is a checkbox ticked by default named "Rely on system fonts only; do not use document font", the result does not seem to change if this box is ticked or not.
If I use PDFMaker, no matter what settings I use I end up with the regular font being simply slanted. I even tried setting compatibility with Acrobat 1.7 and checking "Embed Opentype fonts".

  • Acrobat Pro 9.1 no longer creates PDFs from Word 2007

I upgraded from Acrobat 7 to 9 specifically to gain more control over settings when making PDFs from Word 2007. This worked as I had hoped until the 9.1 vulnerability upgrade was installed. Now it will no longer create PDFs from Word 2007 documents at all.
From within Word 2007, when I click on "Create PDF" (whether in the Office menu or Acrobat toolbar) it asks for a file name, but after I click "Save" does nothing. This is true even for the simplest possible document, using the "Default" settings for PDF "Preferences."
If I right click the file name of the document in Windows Explorer, with Word 2007 closed, and click on "Convert to Adobe PDF" in the menu, it starts and the staus box comes up, but after a few seconds quits and displays "An unexpected error occurred. PDFMaker was unable produce the Adobe PDF."
I can still "Save As" PDF in Word 2007, but this gives me little control over the format.
Is there any way that I can get Acobat 9.1 to do what I bought it for, and what Adobe advertises it will do?

Try printing to the Adobe PDF printer, the more fundamental process (PDF Maker is a preprocessor for the printer). If that does not work, then try with print-to-file selected. Open the file in Distiller and see if the PDF is created. If the latter happens, then check for AcroTray running in the background. It is required to automate the process and is needed by PDF Maker.

  • Why do I see incorrect fonts when I create PDFs from Word

When I first started using Acrobat (versions 3 through 5), it was an incredible product because it could create an exact copy of a document I created with a DTP program. I could send that PDF to someone who did not have the DTP program, yet the recipient saw exactly what I created in the DTP program. That's what made Acrobat great. It worked flawlessly.
Now I have Acrobat Pro XI, and I can't create a PDF from Word and get the correct fonts. I've seen quite a few messages on this forum and elsewhere indicating that other people have this problem, too. But I haven't found a solution. I've tried many things that are suggested--embed fonts, don't embed fonts, and different settings. Nothing seems to work. I've spent hours on this insted of doing the job I am paid for (writing). So I'd be very glad if anyone knows how to fix this.
    A few specifics:
    - Using Word 2010 and Acrobat XI Pro 11.0.3. Windows 64 bit.
    - Most fonts are OK, but some appear to be substitutes. For example, some headings that are supposed to be Tahoma bold-italic come out as something different. It's a lighter weight font. I don't know what it is.
    - Creation method from Word: Acrobat Tab, Create PDF or File > Save As PDF. Either way I get the wrong fonts.
    - Print to Adobe PDF printer DOES produce the correct fonts, but this doesn't help because you don't get bookmarks (which are a critical part of our final PDF product).
    - At one point it seemed that a Word setting, File > Options > Save > Preseve fidelty when sharing this document, but it didn't always work.
    - I've seen this same problem on four computers, all using Word 2010 and Acrobat Pro XI.
Some messages suggest that rolling back to Acrobat 8 will solve this problem. It's hard to believe that's the only solution.

I was starting to think this might be an issue with font fauxing (I think that's the tech term). You've confirmed it.
    Here's what can happen.
Font designers design a font, and (if they have the enthusiasm) bold and italic and bold-italic versions of the font. If you compare carefully, you will see that they are often quite different designs (look at lower case "a" for example, you'll often see that different in italic). Anyway, in an ideal world the font designer has provided four font files. Choose the bold/italic buttons in Word and it (well, actually Windows) picks the right font file.
But Word never forbids you from choosing those buttons even if the font files aren't there. (As an aside, pro design tools like InDesign WILL stop you choosing a style for which there is no font file, because what happens next in Word is considered evil).
If you ask Windows (or Mac OS) to show you a font in italic and there is no italic font file, it will take the regular file and slant each character. This may look different from the italic design font, it may also have different spacing. But to the casual word processor user, all is fine. (The pro designer says "oh my, look at that"). No bold? The font letters get thickened up somehow, often with ugly results, but the casual user is happy, because it's clearly the same font and clearly bolder. These processes are called "fauxing" (from making a faux or fake font).
But what happens in a PDF? PDFs will not faux fonts, and they don't have to. If you make a PDF it's like printing. To print a faux italic font, a slanted font prints. Generally looks no worse than the screen font. To print a faux bold font there are several different techniques, all ugly. One is to print several copies of each letter, slightly set off from each other but overlayed. This isn't only ugly, copy/paste often yields something like BBBOOOLLLDD TTTEEEXXXTTT. Often the printed bold faux font doesn't look much like the screen bold faux font. And here we have your situation exactly.
Now, I see only Tahoma and Tahoma-Bold on my computer too. You could see if anyone seels an Italic/BoldItalic version, or if they are bundled with some Microsoft software (which you'd need to own, the fonts can't be freely copied). But really this is sending the message - use a different font. I'd use Arial, where Windows has had all four files included since Windows 3.1 was released.

  • How to save edit settings under preferrences to use when creating or printing a PDF from word 2003 Windows PC 8.1

I have tried to save my PDF settings after editing them, but when I go to "Print" to PDF and check the settings I keep getting Standard default settings.
There is no Adobe PDF listed as a file heading to change conversion settings on my Word screen.
I have tried to create a PDF by open file through the Adobe application and also by trying to print through the Word application with document open and using Adobe PDF as the printer driver.I have changed or edited the settings but they do not appear as an option to select, just the standard default settings.
I have been able to save my setting as a Adobe PDF job options, but can't access them or use them when it comes time to convert to PDF.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

I have apprached it 3 different ways:
    - by opening acrobat and going to preferrences, clining on  convert to PDf
    - Microsoft Word, then changes each section of the edit settings, ie
general, fonts, images, etc make the cahneges then hit OK, at this point I
get a save as option rather than a save. It saves my changes as a PDF, but I
am not able to access it when I go to make the PDF.
    - I also have tried to print PDF from Word  and got to properties to make
the changs with the same results as above.
    - Then I tried yur suggestion and went to the printer in the control panel
    and had the same results.
I am using mircosoft word 2003 which has been compatable with my windows 8.1
I think the problem may be I am using a "trial" version of Adobe Acrotbat DC
2105 version. It must not belettingme save the setting changes. But this
shouldnot be if they want me to really experience the full effects of the
    program.
    I appreciate your help, thanks

  • PDF from Word doesn't capture entire page

I've created many a PDF from Word documents, but today I'm puzzled. I've created a one-page flyer in standard letter size (8.5 x 11"). I've set all margins - including header and footer - to zero, and placed a top and bottom of page border right at the top and bottom edges. Everything looks fine in Word, but when I convert the document to PDF, approximately a quarter-inch is missing from the left and right sides, and a full half-inch is missing from the bottom.
I've checked Page Setup to make sure of paper size, etc. but don't know what else to check.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

    D'OH!
BD, has anyone ever held a parade in your honor?
It took me about three hours to conceive and do the layout for this flyer. Then another 5 hours trying to get it to convert properly into a PDF. When it didn't convert correctly from Word, I fired up Classic, launched an old version of Quark XPress and recomposed the flyer. But when I tried to export it to PDF, Acrobat Distiller (remember that?) just sat and spun its wheels. It did spit out a Postscript file, but it wouldn't actually make the PDF for some reason. Never even generated an error. Then, I accidentally double-clicked the Postscript file, and Preview launched as said it was making a PDF. I was a happy camper... until I discovered that this PDF was cut off on both the top and bottom.
Then I checked my email and found you had answered my cry for help (yet again).
When I followed your instructions (which I did try to find on my own before posting my plea), the PDF came out perfectly on the first try.
My thanks to you for what must be by now the 85th time.
