PAL DVCAM to Pro Res HQ 1080p 23.98

I want to convert SD PAL DVCAM to Pro Res HQ 1080p 23.98. Is compressor the best way to do this? I dont care how long it takes I just want the best possible quality. Should I just do it in one step? I did a test and it seemed to come out ok, any advice appreciated...

    Apart from the file space you save are there any quality advantages in exporting a DV PAL sequence to Pro Res 422? Some of my students are convinced that it looks better and plays better on their monitors.
    I'm thinking that their final output will be DVD so will DVD Studio Pro allow you to import Pro Res 422? Is there any point being that the final sequence is going to be re-encoded to MPEG?
    I'm yet to test things myself so any pointer would be great.
    One particular student says that their QT sequence looks grainy in QT player where as Pro Res looks GREAT!!!

    QT plays DV files at low quality by default. You can change it to high quality playback in movie properties: Apple + J.
    You will not *add quality* transcoding the movie from one format to another. For DVD use you'll get the most of the quality exporting to MPEG2 using Compressor directly from your timeline with any extra transcoding in the middle.

    Is it possible to see what iDVD did?

    I don't know any way you can interrogate iDVD to reveal settings to the extent that you can in a Compressor project. What you could do is open up the show's VOB in MPEG STreamclip, go to File and Reveal Stream Information; that will at least give you some rudimentary info like average bit rate. Perhaps someone, with more iDVD experience, can chime in here.
    The broader question is why use Compressor at all if your current workflow is doing the job to your satisfaction?
    The value of Compressor is that it gives you control over the many parameters that affect size quality.  and playability. The Compressor presets can give you a starting point for DVD delivery, Web, etc. From those presets, people typically experiment by adjusting the parameters until they get the desired results for their specific show. It's a little bit science and a little bit art. After experimenting, you may be able to get slightly better quality for the project you've successfully burned in iDVD by using Compressor and something likeToast…or maybe not.

  • Issue with Pro Res sources when encoding in Media Encoder.

    There seems to be a big issue with Pro Res sources in Media Encoder. I've noticed that when exporting using the 'software only' mode my graphics and titles look horrible, they are pixelated around the edges and the compression looks bad. This issue only happens when it's being made from a Pro Res source, if I make the exact same file Uncompressed this issue is resolved. If I use the 'Cuda' option (which I already know is the better option) this issue is resolved. The thing is, in a work environment not all of our systems are Cuda enabled and I would like to use Media Encoder as a exporting option overall. I love Media Encoder, it's fast and easy to use but this Pro Res issue is huge because the majority of the time we are working in Pro Res. I also did a test out of Avid Media Composer to Media Encoder, I sent a reference file referencing the Avid MXF material and the issue is gone, this seems to my knowledge to be a Pro Res only issue. The settings I am exporting to is 960 x 540 h.264 and also .mp4. This is coming from a 1080p source and yes I do have the 'maximum render quality' checked for best scaling. I understand that Software only vs Cuda and Open CL use different algorithms when scaling but this seems crazy to me that it would look  this much worse.
    Anyways if somebody can please look into this that would be great, this seems to be an issue where I can't continue at this moment to use Media Encoder. Making my source files Uncompressed every time to do an export is just not a real workflow I want to do.
    On a side note I've also recently noticed on a clip that had text over a grey background that there are lines going all down the screen evenly when exporting to even a non scaled 1080p .mp4. Once again, this issue goes away with any format but Pro Res. The weird part is this happens even with Cuda enabled. This is why I am thinking Media Encoder is having some sort of issue with the Pro Res codec.
    I am on a current new 27'' fully loaded iMac with the latest Adobe CC updates.

    No, it is why advance users do not use the wizard.
    Have a look at OpenOffice.org and its form creation. Once you add your fields in OpenOffice.org, just export to PDF and the form fields will be named just like you named in them in OpenOffice.org and the drop down values carry over.

  • Pro Res in Final cut express How do i get a good quality SD DVD

    I recently bought final cut express and have suffered getting a good quality SD DVD out through the workflow from my cannon XHA1.
    On screen its fine but when i author through imovie to DVD the quality is poor.
    So reading the various threads it would seem that i need to use Pro res and the ingress codec... But cant find this option in express ?
    Question is. Is pro res codec available in express and if not can someone suggest the optimum set up for HD capture to SD DVD output

    Use either of these techniques to get good quality DVDs from AIC.
    1. Edit your HDV/AIC in the timeline. Then create a new DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic sequence. Copy your edited HDV/AIC to the new sequence. Do not alter anything. Render the sequence ..... this will take a long time - up to twice the length of the project. Then File>Export>QuickTime Movie (Not Self-contained).
    However, if you use the QT Movie in iDVD you will get a squashed 4:3 movie, so first of all you must make QT stretch it out to its proper 16:9 dimensions like this:-
    +a. Open the exported movie file in the QT Pro player.+
    +b. Go to Window>Show Movie Properties.+
    +c. Select the "Video Track" and in the "Visual Settings" panel uncheck "Preserve Aspect Ratio".+
    +d. In the "Scaled Size" box set the width to 1024 pixels for PAL.+
    +e. The "Video Track" will have turned grey, so click it to make it blue again.+
    +f. The opened movie file will jump to 16:9.+
    +g. Close it with the red button and click Save.+
    2. This method is fast. Set your camera to "Locked DV" which means that FCE/FCP will capture it as anamorphic DV and edit it as standard definition anamorphic DV. (Use Easy Setup ... DV-PAL (NTSC) Anamorphic).
    You can then Export>QuickTime Movie to be used in iDVD and use the stretching technique mentioned above.

  • Converting 7D camera footage to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ

    I shot footage with the Canon 7D. I brought the footage to Compressor (latest version as part of Final Cut Studio). I am transcoding the footage to Apple Pro Res 422 HQ for editing in Final Cut Pro 7.
    A few clips have been transcoded. I open up the original file and the Pro Res HQ file and compare them side by side on my Mac Book Pro. I would like to attach the screenshot but don't think I can do it that here. Anyway, the Pro Res clip is slightly smaller when opened with Quicktime 7 and 10. Also, the colors seem to be darker and the clip a lot muddier than before.
    Has anyone had any experience with this? Thanks.

    My clips do experience a slight color shift but nothing nominal. However, I have no problems converting my files using the preset and opening them up in FCP 7. When I open them in QTX they appear the same size as their original. Have you checked the inspector pane on your MBP? I have had issues where QTX will not open a video full size due to screen resolution limitations and would always downsize instead. That could be your issue since the MBP cannot display a 1080p file at full resolution.

  • Pro Res Plays Over Firewire?

    I dropped a Sony EX-1 1080i clip onto a timeline, setup in FCP Easy Setup for DV-NTSC Firewire Basic. I changed the rendering to Pro res and rendered the timeline as usual. Looks great and plays fine over firewire to my Sony DVCAM deck.
    It seems counter-intuitive that a Pro res rendered project would play over firewire. Could someone in-the-know explain how this works.

    I think you may be referring to the Render Control setting in user preferences. If you look at that setting, changing it to ProRes only works if the sequence is HDV, XDCamHD, or EX. You are working in a DV sequence so that setting is ignored.
    Just because you have EX footage, doesn't mean it'll render in ProRes no matter what sequence you're working in. For it to render ProRes, you have to first be working in an EX sequence then apply some kind of effect or motion that requires rendering, and then when you render it'll render in ProRes.
    The reason for this I believe (because I don't really work in those formats) has to do with the fact that HDV, XDCamHD, and EX are long GOP formats. Therefore any rendering probably takes longer in the native format than in ProRes. They probably include that setting to speed up the workflow for those using intraframe codecs.
    If you place an HD clip in a DV sequence and render you end up with a DV clip. You've been seeing no difference from before because nothing has changed for you.
    As for taking advantage of HD well, mastering to DV will at minimum, lose you half of your color information or as much as 75 percent. That can't be helped since DV is 4:1:1 color sub-sampling, and HD is 4:2:0 (HDV) and up. However, if you master to DVD, you can keep 4:2:0 which is still better than DV. Obviously the screen resolution can't be helped until you are mastering to HD.

  • Duplicating a portion of Pro Res media for use in another project

    I'm working on a compilation video which is drawing from many different interviews.   I need to duplicate certain sections of 1080p 29.97 Pro Res timelines and then bring them into a new FCP 7.0.3 project. 
    The clips will be pulled from many different external drives.  And I can't connect all these drives together at the same time.
    So my question is...when I am on the FCP timeline of one of these older projects, how do I best copy a section of it while keeping it in Pro Res and hopefully not having to recompress it?   I don't want to go back to the AVCHD camera files that it was generated from.
    Would I "Send to Compressor" right off the timeline and use one of the Pro Res settings?  Same as source settings, etc.
    Or would I "Export as a Quicktime" movie off the timeline?  Settings info?
    I am trying to preserve the image quality but at the same time this will not be for broadcast.   It's for a non-profit's website. 
    Any advice on this would be very much appreciated...

    If you are trying to Media Manage selections from a sequence that span multiple clips, then create a new sequence and copy and paste all the selected parts into the new sequence so that it contains only the selected sections of content you want to copy and consolidate.
    Then, with that new sequence selected, open the Media Manager and make sure that Include Master Clips outside selection and Include Affiliate Clips outside selection are unchecked, and the Delete Unused Media from Duplicated Items is checked.
    Unless you are leaving room for handles in your selection process,  check Use Handles and dial in a duration, so that your clips have some padding.

  • Apple Pro Res 422 / FCP7 render issues

    Hello,
    I do a lot of timelapses and have pretty good workflow for all this. However, I am experiencing one issue that makes everything a bit difficult. I appreciate if anybody could help me.
    My workflow is:
    1. Shoot some stills RAW
    2. Develop in Adobe Camera RAW
    3. Import stills sequence and render in AfterEffects CS4 to AppleProRes 422
    4. Import to FCP7 and edit
    5. Grading / color correction
    6. Publishing
    All works fine, however I am having very often an unpredictable issues with the Apple Pro Res 422 codec under FCP7.
    I always render a bunch of sequences from AE using the same settings for all files. The only difference is resolution.
    My render settings for exporting from AE are:
    - Apple Pro Res 422 wrapped in MOV
    - render in 10-bit YUV from RAW 16 bit sequence files
    - AE project in 16 bit
    - Resolutions of rendered all files around 3500x2500 px, this vary from file to file.
    The sequences render fine in AE.
    The sequences play properly in QT, I can import them to FCP properly, play in FCP properly. I can drag to timeline, scale, rotate, scrub etc.
    However: Some sequences fail to render in FCP7.
    When I drag them to my working sequence in timeline (Usually a Full HD 1080p, Pro Res 422, YUV), scale down (usually) and try to render timeline footage (don't mean exporting here yet) I get the following error:
    "Codec not found. You may be using a compression type without the corresponding hardware card."
    This happens on many computers including iMac, MacbookPro and a Mac Pro.
    I discovered that setting the footage size to even width and height figures when exporting from AE eliminates the problem sometimes, but it does not help in all cases.
    Also it sometimes help if i take such sequence, crop and export using QT under the same settings, just a few pixels less in size. But again - it helps sometimes.
    Can anybody help me with these?

    I had the same problem when we started to edit on Pro Res timelines. The solution I found was to go the Sequence Settings > Video Processing > and change the Render setting to "Render in 8-bit YUV" that allowed me to actually render the timeline and view my work. Hope that helps.

  • Burning a dvd h264 versus pro res 422?

    Hi everyone, I have a "film" project I put together.  It is comprised of many mini scenes and clips.  For each clip I have exported (FCP 6.06) an H264 (720x480) version and a Pro Res 422 (HQ) version.  The Pro Res was better for editing and the H264 was better for uploading to the intrawebs.  Both versions play just fine, but now it's time to burn to DVD.
    I was not going to burn a blue ray just yet, so a SD DVD should be just fine.  I was going to use Toast/ DVD Studio Pro on my mac 10.5.8 Os to make a DVD of all the clips. Will the Pro Res footage look better than the H264, or since its compressed to SD is it better to use the H264 footage?

    A DVD uses ALWAYS Mpeg-2. A DVD-Rom can take anything, it takes data.
    Sound on a DVD is usually AC-3. Also, you have to decide on NTSC or PAL format, in your case (480 lines) it would be NTSC.
    SD is not a compression, it just means NTSC or PAL as opposed to HD (720 or 1080 lines)

  • PRO RES 422 HQ from color to fcp to HDV 1080i tape

    Have just thrown myself off a bridge due to frustration. Filmed a holiday movie a few years ago on HDV Pal and taught myself color on the project after completing it on FCP. I have spent 3 months of my spare time getting it looking how I want it and have just sent it back to FCP for outputting. Everything hunky dory so far except when I came to print to video (back to HDV for archiving) I'm being told that I can't print that seq to tape. Presumably because PRO RES 422 won't go to HDV. Is that so and do I have any answers?

    For having just thrown yourself off a bridge, your grammar, spelling, and punctuation are impeccable.
    You are correct. A ProRes sequence will not go to HDV. You must place your ProRes sequence into a new HDV sequence, render/conform, and print that to HDV tape.
    When you're going out via firewire, you pretty much have to match your sequence settings to your deck settings, DV>DV, HDV>HDV. Hardware capture cards/boxes by AJA & Blackmagic can up/down/cross convert on the fly, but not a direct firewire connection.
    So, use your ProRes sequence to create the DVD, and create an HDV sequence to archive it to a tape.
    And stop throwing yourself off bridges.

  • Re-encode HDV into Pro res - create HD masters?

    A while back i had a big project with averaging 12x 1 hour hdv videos - when exporting as hdv (current seq settings) it went out of sync after 30+mins
    setting seq as pro res had no effect, so, i just re-rendered the seq asa dv pal and exported (was intended for sd dvd anyway).
    Now what i want to do, is have self contained hd masters of the videos.
    Will running all videos in the capture folder for this project in compressor - exporting as 'apple pro res lt' then 'reconnecting media' - render - export self contained.mov work?

    Pre-Roll and whatnot. Capturing HDV as ProRes will get you the FULL shot. FCP just detects the break, and makes a new clip. HDV as HDV, there's a second or two missing from the head of a shot. At least in my experience of two years ago. Has that changed? Can you capture now, with the break, and have it keep the full clip?

  • Apple Pro Res 422 versus Apple Intermediate Codec

    I'm new to the world of FCE HD. I'm transfering video from a Canon HG10 to my MacBookPro and storing on an external drive. Earlier projects are bringing in video with Apple Intermediate Codec compressor... no problems, editing doesn't require rendering... Now video is being brought in as Apple Pro Res 422. The Pro Res is requiring that I render everything once I bring it from the viewer to the canvas. I've searched all menus, preferences and settings looking for where and how to change this setting. Does anyone have a solution to this snag?
    The data rate for Pro Res 422 is 15.3mb/s and for Apple intermediate codec is 9.9
    None of this makes sense to me... please assist.

    How did you convert to ProRes 422?
    ProRes 422 codec is a part of final cut studio 2.
    FCE HD cannot edit nor render in ProRes like Final Cut Pro. You material havs to be NTSC, PAL or AVCHD and HDV (converted to Apple Intermediate Codec).

  • Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder  - Both types say I have "a newer version installed", but I can't view Pro-Res files on either type of machine.

    I'm trying to view a Pro-Res file from Final Cut Pro on machines that have Quicktime Pro, but having no luck.  I've tried installing the "
    Apple ProRes QuickTime Decoder " for both Windows and Mac (on the correct machines), but I keep getting "You already have a newer version of this installed" on each machine, and can't finish.  Needless to say, the Pro-Res file will not play on either machine, and there seems to be no way to remove a "newer version" and install this one.  Thanks for any suggestions.

    There is no quicktime folder there. And no quicktime program is installed when I try to install iTunes. The only reason I tried installing quicktime in standalone was because the itunes install was not actively going to the quicktime part of its installation.
    I've tried removing everything and only installing iTunes. But even after deleting the physical files, using the WIndows Install cleanup tool, and cleaning up my registry, the quicktime portion of the iTunes install doesn't complete, and I keep getting "unknown" errors from the crash prevention program, and from what I can see it's because there's no physical Quicktime program installed.
    As for other accounts, no I cannot start it up with other accounts, I keep getting the "Unknown" error and there is no physical files for quicktime anywhere.
    And selective startup doesn't seem to work as there is NO qttask option when I run selective startup.
    So, I seem to be out of options, and thing else I could try?

  • New problems importing Pro-res files

    Hi,
    I am running CC14 on PC (HPz800 Windows 8) - and I have recently become unable to import Pro-res files into After Effects or Media Encoder. These files DO open in premiere
    I have tried the following:
    Restarted
    Cleared my cache
    Cleared all my appdata settings
    uninstalled and reinstalled latest Quicktime
    reverted back to a previous version of After effects (this is where i noticed the problem first and I had recently got a new update)
    copying the file to a different location on my drive and importing it from there
    Additionally:
    I have had no problems with Pro-res in the past
    The same file works fine on other computers in my office with the same versions of Ae/Encoder
    The video file works in premiere
    The video file plays fine in Quicktime
    I get the following errors:
    In Ae - "this '.mov' is damaged or unsupported"
    In media encoder - "could not be imported. could not read from source. please check settings and try again"
    In the meantime I have re-encoded a proxy using premiere - however this is not an adequate long-term solution
    Not sure what to try next, don't really want to re-image my whole computer (i already did this on a month or so ago)
    Any help is appreciated
