Panasonic AG-DVX100B prombelms?

i know this prombelm is not related to FCE, but i though maby it could be answered by someone here. I was in the middle of the processing of the Panasonic AG-DVX100B, but was told of a promeblem that stopeed me in my tracks! For some reason "I was told", when you import VIA firewire on the AG-DVX100B, there have been instences where the camera's FIREWIRE port is BLOWN out becasue of a glitch in the camera, and the camera is rendered usless. I was woundering if anyone has hear of this prombelm as well, and if it is LEGIT?
G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   I have; Final Cute Express HD, Soundtrack, LiveType, iDVD

Yes, I've heard of firewire ports dying as a consequence of hot swapping. Panasonics were involved.

  • Panasonic AG-DVX100b good or bad?

Hey guys ok so i have tons of problems with my canon gl2... anyone out there DONT GET IT!! if your going with fcp for all i know 1. dropped frame rates alllll the time look at other peoples comments its true! 2. myn has a rewind issue.... its really annoying. Anyway thats not what im here for i am thinking of sellign my canon gl2 and getting a Panasonic AG-DVX100b since everyone says it works great with fcp 6 can you give a good or bad? tell me whats good about it whats bad... any info i should know... and if it works good with Final Cut Pro 6... i hope you help me out if you need this im on a macbook pro with final cut pro 6.0 and its a panasonic ag-dvx100b i hop that covers it!

Of course you find only ISSUES when you search the forums for the GL2...who posts that they are having success? No one walks into a doctor's office and says, "My arms feel really good, and my lungs are clear." No, they go to the doctor's office saying "I am having trouble breathing, and I broke my arm."
If you search the forums, you see plenty of posts with people having issues with DVX cameras too. Especially the forum dedicated to that camera. True, Canon cameras are a bit more finicky, but they work fine. Some have issues, others do not.

  • Panasonic AG-DVX100B vs. Canon GL2

Well I am an Inspiring Music Video Editor and I am caught Between The Panasonic AG-DVX100B or Canon GL2 I'm Caught In a Tight one Here See My Mentor told me that the GL2 is a Great Camera For a Great Price and I have worked on it Before. But For some reason the Advisors Here Recomend the Panasonic. I'm not in a Great Squeeze for money But I want the Best Quality at a Great Price. But then again who doesn't A LITTLE help Please??

No contest. I've extensive experience with the DVX, GL1/2 (XM1/2 over here in the UK), XL1 and other 1/3"CCD cams in a variety of situations, documentary, drama, ENG, music video, live music, corporate, wedding etc, etc and the DVX is far and away the best overall for any of these situations.
Balanced XLR audio for the DVX, unbalanced minijack for the GL.
Infinitely better LCD pullout screen on the DVX - the image snaps into focus much easier than the (smaller) screen of the GL.
Manual Zoom on the DVX for those funky MTV crash zooms.
DVX can shoot progressive for the film look (sort of) if that's your thang - can't do that on the GL.

  • Settings for 24p advanced mode with a Panasonic AG-DVX100B?

I recently bought a Panasonic AG-DVX100B to shoot a docu and a low-budget feature. I have shot some test footage (and am going to be shooting) in 24P advanced mode. Can anyone tell me what FCP settings I need to change (or be concerned about) since I'll be changing from a mid-level consumer miniDV camera to the DVX?
Also, so I don't have to keep bugging people in here, does anyone know of any reputable tutorial sites for using FCP with the DVX? Or even any site(s) or book(s) that explain FCP in more detail than the manual? I've perused Ken Stone's site, and it looks pretty helpful but, the more, the merrier!
    I'm using FCP 4.5 on a dual 2GHz PowerMac running 10.4.9, with 1.5GB of RAM, a 400GB internal drive, and a 140GB Firewire drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
    Lloyd

Lloyd... as a DVX lover, I must say you made a great choice.
The DV/NTSC (or PAL) 2.3.3.2 Advanced Pulldown Removal option for capture works great... IF *I'll get to that IF in a second.
I copied that default and made one that also includes the anamorphic button checked (as the default doesn't.)
Ok... the IF - make sure you:
    1) NEVER turn off the camera while recording (use the RED stop button first, then turn off (of course))
    2) NEVER when shooting 24pA review your shot material. SOMETIMES if you use the find last frame feature on the camera (in VCR mode) it will be ok, but NEVER just rewind and start recording willy-nilly... this will for sure disrupt the cadence and you'll get a quit capture when you try to capture the footage.
    3) NEVER switch the scene setup on the camera in the middle of a tape. Put some duck-tape over that scene wheel so you don't hit it with your thumb!! (the B model is better about this as it is recessed a bit.)
If all else fails, capture using the 29.97 setting without the cadence removal and then chop it up into bits and use the TOOLS menu feature to remove the cadence after you've captured it.
As for the sequence (after you've got it captured...) use the 23.97 DV/NTSC (pal) sequence - use the anamorphic as needed.
Good luck... feel free to check out the DVX site (if you like skateboard videos), there are some VERY knowledgeable folks over there - or email me anytime also.

  • FCE, Panasonic AG-DVX100B, and 24p

Last weekend I rented a Panasonic AG-DVX100B. I chose the F5 preset for 24p (not advanced), cine-like, etc.
When I imported it into FCE 3.5 I got 30-interlaced.
I tried re-importing into a fresh, new project in FCE but FCE still shows the imported videos as 30-interlaced. I've double-checked the camera settings and it's definitely recording 24p.
Any idea what might have gone wrong?
    TIA,
    --Richard

FCE does not convert on the fly during capture.
You have to use an Easy Setup that fully matches your camera settings, but unfortunately FCE does not have a 24p setting for your camera.
I guess with FCP you could capture from your camera with those settings.

  • Panasonic AG-DVX100B -- Compatibility?

A few questions on this product.
First off, the link is here.
    http://www.expresscameras.com/prodetails.asp?prodid=450977&start=1
Second; will that thing work with Final Cut Express?
And third, I'm betting that thing uses little tapes to record everything. How would I get that video content from the tape, onto a MacBook Pro Laptop to use with Final Cut Express?
    That's all.

It's a DV camera. You capture using FireWire. FCE does not work with all of the formats this camera shoots.

  • Newest verison of FCP for pre-Intel G5? Flat-screen TV as monitor?

I have a pre-Intel G5 and I'd like to upgrade my FCP Suite. Which version is the "highest" I can use on my computer? I'm pretty sure the newest version is built around the Intel chips and will work slowly on my computer, so I want to get the version that will be best on my system. I'm producing a feature film (shot on 24p SD with a Panasonic AG-DVX100b) and although things are working now (I currently have FCP HD 4.5), I'd like the added bells and whistles of a newer version.
I'd also like to add a TV/monitor to my system because the video appears much darker on my monitors than on a regular TV (even after I calibrated them for video using a Huey Pro color calibrator). I currently have the captured video feeding from my computer through a cheap mini-DV camera via Firewire and then to the TV via RCA cables, which works sporadically, and I also have a SONY DVMC-DA2 analog-to-digital (and vice versa) converter box that works, again, sporadically. Is there a better way to set this up (I probably need to buy an editing deck), and has anyone had any luck (or would anyone advise) using a new 720p flat screen as a TV/monitor?
I have some other questions, but I'll ask those later. I appreciate any comments anyone might have.
    Thanks,
    Lloyd

FCS2 (aka FCP 6) is the last version for PPC machines.
If you are editing DV, keep your existing TV. Playing it back on an HDTV is not the way to go.
Use something like the Matrox MXO to feed the TV.

  • Film Student Needs A Lot Of Help!

Okay, first of all, let it be known that I am a complete newb. Also, I may sound ignorant as there are several other "Camera Help" posts, so I am sorry for that; however, this topic is fairly specific. Any help/recommendations are welcome.
I have not bought a camera (I'm looking for a MiniDV digital camera that produces film-like quality video) OR a laptop computer.
Computer I am looking at: MacBook Pro 17-inch 2.16Ghz Intel Core Duo.
    Camera(s) I am looking at:
    Panasonic AG-DVX100B Mini-DV Cinema Camcorder
    http://www.prestigecamera.com/product~id~psagdvx100b~showmore~showmore.htm
    OR
    Sony DCRVX2000 MiniDV Digital Camcorder
    http://www.digitalsaver.com/stores.asp?productid=DCRVX2000
I have no idea whether this is a good combination and whether they are compatable.
Also, I am going to be a film student this fall, and I am wondering if the MacBook Pro 17" 2.16 GHz is going to be suffecient for me (I have heard that Macs are the way to go for video/film editing).
ANY INFO/HELP/RECOMMENDATIONS AT ALL ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED.
    Thank You.
    ::Rufio::

    funny, I do have a very different opinion… ;-)
    * iMovie does NOT handle NTSC/PAL footage in progressive mode… you are able to import such stuff, but adding a disolve or a title - swoosh, THAT part is interlaced… (to my knowledge, … maybe Karl/Matti can give of some insight...)
    => investment into FCPro...
    * I do like the new überMac… but whatfor, concerning movie making? … probably a hasty MTV producer needs tons of effects rendered faster then light… but as a student, I would invest more in other things (good point about mics) .
should I mention, my ol' friend, my G3/500 (that's Mega, not GigaHz) iBook does editing with iMovie....?
    * HDcameras are interesting, in case you want to transfer video => 35mm film, because of higher res
    I would …
    * look for an old G4/5/dual/quad, incl. a superdrive , add 2GB RAM, screw in 2x 250GB HDs, get another firewire case for another, min. 250GB drive
    * iMovie is nice for me, the average Daddy-does-movies guy, but as a film student, I would immediately jump into the cold pond and grab FCE/P…
    * I worked once a project with the VX1000 (… yepp, a while ago, last century…) - an outstanding camera to its time, one of the first 3ccd'er, used in many broadcast projects, excellent pic quality; get a pointer mic, get a (few) wireless lavalier (+ext. hardware mixer)
    * invest in software: FCE/P, PhotoshopElements (video is RGB only), think about AfterEffects, think about any 3/4D app, Maya has a learner edition…
iMovie is fun, you learn the basic editing rules of Sergej Eisenstein with it...
and: I like the attitude, …a MiniDV digital camera that produces film-like quality video…

  • Plasma Screen OK to test interlacing issues?

Having interlacing issues with my 24P footage and IMac monitor. If I output to my plasma screen, is this the same as any NTSC monitor in regard to checking/monitoring interlace issues?

Just to aid in the direction you're taking this.
This is an extract from the "Key Features" of the Panasonic standard definition video camera I'm assuming he's been using based on his profile:
    Panasonic AG-DVX100B 3CCD 24p/30p/60i Mini-DV Camcorder
    • You may choose from three shooting modes: 24p (24 fps, progressive) for images with the look and motion of film movies, 30p (30 fps, progressive), or standard 60i (60 fps, interlace).
    • 24p Advance Mode For 24p Non-Linear Editing
In 24p mode, images from the CCD can be 2:3 pulldown-converted (24p Mode) or 2:3:3:2 pulldown-converted (24p Advance Mode) and recorded onto tape in the standard 60i TV format. The tape can then be played back or edited using an ordinary DV system. True 24p editing can be achieved by uploading 2:3:3:2 pulldown-converted images via an IEEE 1394 DV interface to a compatible non-linear editing system. The 24p Advance Mode allows 60i/24p conversion with minimal picture degradation and on the fly 24 frame extraction.

  • Videotape problem

Well, this is not really a problem with Final Cut Pro, which is pretty much the bees knees in my opinion but a problem with a videotape I thought another video enthusiast might help me with after no small exasperation on my part.
I am shooting with a panasonic AG-DVX100B in 24p mode using panasonic's AY-DVM63PQ pro tape. I shot three tapes in a row. The first and last tapes were fine but the middle tape, when I view it. is almost 3/4 covered by a blue or black screen, the viewable video itself is glitchy and the sound is buzzy with a lot of dropouts. I tried to record again at the end of my footage and this newly shot footage is fine, nothing like the problem footage coming right before it on the tape.
The thought of reshooting everything is a bit too much to bear but I am not quite sure how to handle this
    Please help
    Brandon

Wow, that really bites. I am at a loss here. Have you tried playing the tape in another camera or deck? I doubt that would have any effect, but you never know til you try. Also, are you looking at the tape in the capture window, or just viewing it on the camera's monitor? Sometimes I have gotten weird stuff in the capture window only to have it look fine once captured. If you have done all of this I would suggest the Guiness and a nap solution. It won't make your tape any better but it will help as you reschedule your shoot.

  • Getting that "Cinema" look

    hey everyone
me and a few of my friends are making a movie and we're trying to make it look as professional as possible. My friend just got a Panasonic AG-DVX100b which we will be using with Final Cut Express. My question is what settings do i use on both the camera and in FCE to achieve that "cinema" look, like how a movie or TV show looks?
i hope i described this right
    thanks

Well your friend just got himself one of the best cameras you can buy. You might try going to http://dvxuser.com It's a forum for that camera and you can find out a lot of good info. As far as FCE and the dvx100b it will work just fine. Shoot in either 24p or 30p mode. This will give it the motion of film. ( more like the motion of t.v. ) FCE only uses a 29.97 fps timeline so don't stress when your 24p footage shows up as 29.97 fps.
In FCE you can apply video filters to adjust the look as well. By adjusting the gamma, saturation, hue, etc. you can give it more of a "film look". Good lighting is also key to getting that "film look". It's an art.
But like Studio X said it's best to read as much as you can on the subject. Also go on FCP's forum and do a topic search for the dvx100b. More info there.
Trial and error is a good teacher. Have fun!!!

  • "faking" widescreen?

I'm currently shooting a documentary on a Panasonic AG-DVX100B, using 24p mode. Footage looks great so far. I avoided shooting with "widescreen" setting because I heard it degrades the video, as it is not using a true anamorphic lens. So I thought I could perhaps matte the final footage myself in post, putting the black bars at the top and bottom. Has anyone else tried this? And if so how do you actually figure out the correct "ratio"? Is there a mathematical formula? A magic button? I know there's 16:9, 1.85, 2.35 and probably more configurations. I would want the least extreme that would leave the largest picture, yet still be "widescreen". Any experience or suggestions for this?

I can't see any reason why you shouldn't do it the way you originally anticipated.
It is extremely simple - select your footage in the timeline, open the Motion tab in the Viewer and click the "Crop" disclosure triangle.
Then simply adjust the Top and Bottom sliders to give you the effect you want (a value of around 15% each should be about right).
It could take you every bit of 15 seconds to do !
    Ian.
P.S. Make sure the Canvas is in Wireframe Mode first.
P.P.S I have done it again Tom! I swear your answer wasn't there a minute ago. Either I'm losing my marbles or the website is playing up.

  • 24p(A) SD workflow?

I am producing a feature film using a Panasonic AG-DVX100b. I'm going to shoot in 24pA SD and edit in FCP. I am currently using FCP HD 4.5. Unless I get an offer form a major distributor (hardee har har), the movie is going to be distributed on DVD. Can anyone suggest a specific workflow (capture specs, timeline specs, etc.) for this exact type of production, or is there somewhere I can look (website, book, etc.) to find this info? I have produced several videos in the past shooting on miniDV (30i) with no problems, but this 24p is giving me a few headaches. I know I should bite the bullet and buy an HD camera, but I own the DVX, so that's what I'm going to use.
If anyone could offer some suggestions I would be forever in your debt.
    T'anks,
    Lloyd

    Hi Thomas,
    Thanks for your inputs,
I will again tell you whole scenario,
There is a dunning work flow, which is configured for BO BSEG-->CHANGED as event.
when I have checked the document number in FB03 and navigate to wf overview then I have got that work flow has been triggered many times for the same instance key in some difference of time.
then I have checked the changes if any in the document from FB03 transaction but it's showing no changes.
So here i am confused that from where this event has been triggered?
I have also checked swe2 entries
there are three entries made against BSEG business object.
    BO   <-->  Event <>   Receiver <--
    >    Receiver FM
    BSEG---CHANGED SUBSCRIBE-----SGOSSUB_REC_FB_SEND_MAIL     some check fm
    BSEG---CHANGEDWF1--
    FM
    BSEG---CREATED -WF2--
    FM
I dont have any idea what the 1st entry is for ? Here is this SUBSCRIBE  making any difference ?
    So that's the whole situation.

  • Selecting audio channels during capturing

I am in the process of capturing a interview style documentary that was shot with a Panasonic AG-DVX100B. The interviews that were shot on location used a handheld wireless microphone connected to line 1. Normally, I would set the capture setup to only capture line 1 of the audio so that the built-in camera mic on line 2 would not be captured and create an echo. I would then capture the entire day's shoot into one clip. The shoot is about 45 minutes in total.
During this particular day's shoot we shot some footage in the car using only the built-in camera mic. The camera was still set to use the wireless receiver on line 1, so only line 2 has audio (from the camera mic). So as you can figure, when I captured my normal way with only line 1, there was no audio for the car scenes.
The audio from the car scene was recorded fine on line 2 so now I need to come up with a different process for capturing this show... and maybe reconsider the way way I capture all together. I have not started editing so it's okay to recapture at this point.
    My question is:
    1. Should I capture each of the three locations seperatly with different audio settings and do a batch capture? ie; Location 1 (line 1 for handheld mic) Car (line 2 for camera mic) and Location 2 (line 1 for handheld mic).
    2. Do I capture both line 1 and 2 into one 45 minute clip and select the audio channel that I want from within FCP?
    3. If answer 2 is the recommendation, how do I do that without having to deselect an audio channel in each edit in the timeline.
Thanks in advance for the assistance!

    go for option 2,
you can de-select the errant audio track from the source side when you create your sequence so you don't have to do it to all edits. thats one of the joys of editing!
you may find you have some good sound on the other mike though don't just throw it away
    best regards
    andy

  • Camera just died... should I stick with MiniDV format?

I only need SD and I want to make sure I get a camera that works well with FCP 6. Should I stick with MiniDV format or are there Memory Card or Hard Drive based cameras that work well for SD shooting and FCP? Thanks

    Hello Bruce,
What kind of budget are you looking at when it comes to the purchase of your next camera?
As a previous owner, I highly recommend purchasing a used, low hours, Panasonic AG-DVX100B.
It is a fantastic camera, I don't want to start up a war of the SD cameras in this thread but I personally believe it is the best SD camera ever made. And many others feel the same way. It can shoot in multiple frame rates (24P, 24PA, 30P, and 60i) and with the cameras scene files it makes it easy to get the look you want. It is built like a tank and with the Leica lens you get very good quality with no need to transcode to a different format for FCP.
Do some research on them if you haven't already. I guarantee you wont be disappointed if that is the route you took. I know I wasn't.
