Settings for 24p advanced mode with a Panasonic AG-DVX100B?

I recently bought a Panasonic AG-DVX100B to shoot a docu and a low-budget feature. I have shot some test footage (and am going to be shooting) in 24P advanced mode. Can anyone tell me what FCP settings I need to change (or be concerned about) since I'll be changing from a mid-level consumer miniDV camera to the DVX?
Also, so I don't have to keep bugging people in here, does anyone know of any reputable tutorial sites for using FCP with the DVX? Or even any site(s) or book(s) that explain FCP in more detail than the manual? I've perused Ken Stone's site, and it looks pretty helpful but, the more, the merrier!
I'm using FCP 4.5 on a dual 2GHz PowerMac running 10.4.9, with 1.5GB of RAM, a 400GB internal drive, and a 140GB Firewire drive.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you,
Lloyd

Lloyd... as a DVX lover, I must say you made a great choice.
The DV/NTSC (or PAL) 2.3.3.2 Advanced Pulldown Removal option for capture works great... IF *I'll get to that IF in a second.
I copied that default and made one that also includes the anamorphic button checked (as the default doesn't.)
Ok... the IF - make sure you:
1) NEVER turn off the camera while recording (use the RED stop button first, then turn off (of course))
2) NEVER when shooting 24pA review your shot material. SOMETIMES if you use the find last frame feature on the camera (in VCR mode) it will be ok, but NEVER just rewind and start recording willy-nilly... this will for sure disrupt the cadence and you'll get a quit capture when you try to capture the footage.
3) NEVER switch the scene setup on the camera in the middle of a tape. Put some duck-tape over that scene wheel so you don't hit it with your thumb!! (the B model is better about this as it is recessed a bit.)
If all else fails, capture using the 29.97 setting without the cadence removal and then chop it up into bits and use the TOOLS menu feature to remove the cadence after you've captured it.
As for the sequence (after you've got it captured...) use the 23.97 DV/NTSC (pal) sequence - use the anamorphic as needed.
Good luck... feel free to check out the DVX site (if you like skateboard videos), there are some VERY knowledgeable folks over there - or email me anytime also.

  • 1080 50P PAL preset for MOV files recorded with the Panasonic GH3

Dear Adobe team and PE11 users,
With my Panasonic GH3 I'm recording 1080 50P MOV files. I bought this camera because the mov compression is much more easier to edit then AVCHD. There is already a solution for the (non english) premiere elements 11 software with a preset for 50P AVCHD files but I can't find any discussion about MOV files. Does anyone have the same problem and a solution (with a MOV 50p PAL preset). Untill now PE11 recognise the 50p files as HDV 1080 25i files in the project settings...
    best regards,

  • 24P Advanced Issues with Export

    Hey all-
I have a short film that I made on a Canon XL2 with a Firestore drive. The camera settings were in 16x9 with 24P Advanced on the camera, and Quicktime 24P in the firestore selected.
When you open the individual clips in Quicktime, the audio is way off and there is serious artifacting at the end of the video, but when you pull it into final cut (using Final Cut Studio 1, FCP 5.1.4) and edit on either a 24 FPS or 23.98 FPS timeline, everything is perfect.
When I try to export using either quicktime conversion or cinema tools, the audio is way off, as is the video. In fact, it will show artifacting on some of the clips, and the video is way off. I am outputting a DV NTSC with 24P and anamorphic selected, but it doesn't seem to work at all. Every setting I try, even those matching the sequence preset, seem to mess up the export. I have read a few other articles on other websites, but nobody answered them, and I haven't been able to find anything here.
    Can anyone please help me?
    Cheers!
    D

I have found that sending the files to Shake through the FCP timeline and rendering them back out through a file out node takes care of the issue. Seems like a pain, but I guess if it gets me to where I need to be, it will have to do.
Is there anyone who can give me insight as to why this happened? Is it a glitch with the XL2? The Firestore Drive Settings? Final Cut?
    Anyone?

  • Capturing OfflineRT for 24p Advanced?

    Hey guys,
I've been searching the forum for an answer, but I haven't been able to find anything too clear. I've decided to edit a feature I'm current working on with OfflineRT due to the 100's of hours already shot/still to be shot for the project. Director wants access to everything. But since it's low budget, we definitely don't have the space to have any of it on-line. Can somebody recommend what settings are necessary to capture and edit 24pa anamorphic footage (we want to output to film eventually) using OfflineRT on FCP5?
    Thanks!!

No, it's not working for me. And I'm certain it is user error. For one thing, in order to capture with the pulldown being removed, do you absolutely have to use the source camera? Because we have it attached to a regular DV deck and it's absolutely refusing to check that part of the preset. Second, the capture preset for OfflineRT NTSC 24p (23.98) is GENERIC CAPTURE TEMPLATE.... with no real sign of anything for 24p. It's really frustrating that this isn't as simple as it could be. At this point, I don't really care about it being anamorphic... but I'd like to get the darn thing actually capturing at 24fps (23.98... or something!) Ugh!

  • NcSetAttr.vi returns error for setting Transciver mode with USB8472 hardware

I am using a NI-USB 8472 (low speed CAN @ 33333kbps) device and am trying to set it up for the wakeup mode which states in the devices spec that it has this capability.  However, attached is the quick test code that returns and error when using the ncSetAttr.vi to change the transciver mode from normal to wakeup
The error returned from the ncSetAttr.vi is 0xBFF62104: The property ID, attribute ID, or operation code that you provided is invalid.  Solution: Read the function description and verify that you provide ad valid ID.
As far as I can see I have everything configured and set appropriately for it to work.  Anyone that could help out with why the hardware is not properly being configured for this mode would be appreciated.

That may have been generating that error and yes it does work as long as the value is set to 0.  However, if I try to set it to a value of 2 or 3 in your example I get the following error:
    Possible reason(s):
NI-CAN:  (Hex 0xBFF6211E) You set a transceiver mode that is not supported by your CAN hardware. For example, Single-Wire modes are not supported for High-Speed or Low-Speed / Fault-Tolerant transceivers. Solutions: Consult the manual to determine the valid transceiver modes for your hardware.
I notice in MAX that my hardware is listed as Low-Speed/Fault Tolerant so that is why it is generating that error.  However, all documentation for the USB-8472 states that sleep mode/wakeup mode is supported for this device so why does it not allow it.  Can the type be changed from Low-Speed / Fault tolerant to  Single-Wire or is this a hardware component (i.e. transciever) inside the hardware.
Also if this is not supported for this device then why does it state so in documentation (copied below)?  If not supported for this device, the documentation is very misleading!

  • Best settings for Green Screen Video with Canon Mark iii

    HI
What are the ideal camera settings for Green screen video.
    Iso?
    aperature?
Depth of field settings (best to have the green screen a bit out of focus?)
Any other camera settings would be helpful.
    Thanks
    Rowby

    Hi Rowby!
Thanks so much for writing in about green screen shooting with the EOS 5D Mark III camera.  Green screen shooting can come down to some crucial elements and how well you handle the camera and the lighting.
Arguably the most important thing is to have excellent lighting on the screen.  Without this, the keys used to replace the green screen will not be accurate.  So hopefully you have a good set of lights you will be using to actually light the physical screen.
With regards to ISO, shoot as low as possible.  We suggest that you stick in the ISO 200-400 range where possible.  With good, high key, proper lighting on the screen this shouldn't be an issue.
Aperture should actually be in the higher end of the range, you would want to stick to apertures around f/8 and above.  Again, with adequate lighting this shouldn't be out of reach.  This is so the green screen is more in focus, versus having it out of focus, which would not yield successful results.
Use an appropriate lens to the subject, for example if you are doing wide shots- use only the focal length needed for the shoot and no wider.  For head shots, close ups- use a lens that will get you close.
Following these suggestions should give you some pretty good results.  Remember, if this is your first attempt don't be discouraged, green screen shooting can be difficult to accomplish.
We wish you the best of luck in your endeavor!

  • No Basic/Advanced Mode with Adjustment Brush

I have LR3 and can't make any changes using the Adjustment Brush.  I can highlight an area (and change colors of the overlay) but that's it...any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?  I also have no Basic/Advanced switch...
    thanks

The basic/advanced modes were removed from the application as part of the Lr3 update. Hit H key to make the brush visible and O to toggle overlay on/off. Make sure that Density and Flow sliders are not set to Zero. You may have to toggle open the full brush panel to see these options.

  • Security Settings for two admin groups  with shared service

    Hi all,
I use Essbase Administration Services 11.1.2 and Hyperion Shared Services Console 11.1.2.0.73 (Drop 17)
Access Rights are granted via Groups in Hyperion Shared Service Console.
    We have two admin groups.
AccessGroup 1: admin rights on some cubes (A) and read rights on all others (B).
AccessGroup 2: admin rights on (B) and read rights on (A).
If someone of AccessGroup 1 copies a cube of (A) – Fin_rep for example – wether AccessGroup 1 nor AccessGroup 2 can even see the cube (and i dont even mention admin rights) execpt the one who copied it.
    Settings in Shared Services Console:
    - Both groups have role "Create/delete application" and "AccessManager" (or something like that - german word is "Zugriffsberechtigungsmanager") on Essbase Cluster (our essbase server).
    - AccessGroup 1 has role "ApplicationManager" and "AccessManager" for all cubes which they should administrate (A)
and role "Read" for all cubes with read only (B)
    - AccessGroup 2 has role "ApplicationManager" and "AccessManager" for all cubes which they should administrate (B)
and role "Read" for all cubes with read only (A)
I hope i can get some help with this topic.
    Thank you in advance,
    Best regards

Security will not copy over when you create new cube from old cube. You have to grant security to required groups using shared services or Maxl.

  • Ideal Cache Settings for "One Processor Mode"

    Hey there,
I got a AMD Dual Core 4200+, 3 gig ram comp, XP 32bit
Anyways, AFX seems to work better for me in "single processor" mode.
So, what would the ideal cache/memory settings be for my computer would you say? Including the secret memory purging info?
    Thanks,
    james

Mmh, there isn't really any secret to this. The default 60/ 120% combo is mostly considered to be the best compromise in most situations. AE's memory allocation is dynamic, anyways... If it's of any importance to you, you might increase the average RAM usage to 80% or so, but unless you work with larger comps that benefit from that setting, you won't see much of a difference.
Depending on the type of work, you can also go to the other extreme and lower the RAM usage, but instead use the disk cache. It will force AE to dump more frames to disk rather than holding them in RAM. This can be beneficial if you are using many precomps with effects or do color space conversions e.g. working with 32bpc OpenEXR files in 16bpc or something.
For the purging you shouldn't overdo. Emptying the memory every 5 or 10 frames can be enough many times. Only use lower values if your comp doesn't go thru at all. The downside to purging is that AE needs to load everything from scratch after a purge and depending on the amount of stuff, this can drastically increase render times. So it's not always wise to use this option. It will be even more so, if you are using temporal trickery with time-remapped comps or effects such as Echo or CC Force Motionblur.

  • File name for append processing mode with time stamp

    Hi Experts
we are doing file to file scenario using the processing mode as Append.
the requirement for us to append the files and we need to have new file name with time stamp added to the appended file.but in the processing mode of the file adapter either we can append or add time stamp. thatz the problem I am facing now.
we are doing file based processing not message based ,micheal blog regarding the dynamic file name is for message based not for file based.
    Please provide your valuable comments.
    Thanks

    Hi mohamed,
I suggest you to map the target source structure to the required filename u want, like for example ur filename is input26062008.txt means to the target structure u perform the following mapping
constant (input) concat with currentdate function --> concat with constant .txt --> map this concat to target. So u will get the filename u expected with the time.
Then in the communication channel u select the mode as append. Now ur requirement will get solve i think so. plz try.

  • SmcFanControl settings for 2009 iMac 24" with burn-in

I have a 2009 24" iMac with burn-in on the screen. I downloaded smcFanControl, as it's supposed to fix the problem. I have 2 questions. First, can someone tell me what settings I should be using for the ODD, the HDD and the CPU? Second, Since I didn't know what settings to use, I temporarilly set all 3 of them well above the Apple minimums. What I don't understand is that when I look at the current RPM's that the fans are using, they're all below the minimum speeds that I set on the smcFanControl. In other words, when I open up the program at the top of the screen, all of the RPM's that it displays, are significantly lower than the minimums that I set under preferences in the smcFanControl program. In addition, I don't hear any fans at all, the computer is dead silent. Can someone please help me with these 2 issues above. Thanks.

Bringing this up from the almost dead....
...to setup a Hot Corner to sleep the display go to: System Preference > Expose & Spaces > Expose and in the Active Screen Corners section setup any corner you would like to sleep the display. Then any time you leave with a job running, just park the mouse pointer in that corner and sleep the display until you return.
That's fine and dandy for most things, but does not address the issue brought up by the initial poster. When running iDVD the screen will not blank nor will the screen saver start. If you have a hot corner to blank the screen and you move your mouse to the hot corner the screen will stay blanked for maybe 10 seconds before it unblanks. This is true using the iDVD that came with iLife '08. I haven't tried any others.
It seems that iDVD overrides the users sleep/blanking preference. That makes sense if you are watching something. It makes no sense during the 3+ hours it takes me to render a DVD disk image (I'm not burning a disk at this time).

  • Best CS5 memory settings for MBP dual core with 8GB RAM?

The Adobe page on this suggests doing some tests (groan). But why, when there's a forum chock full of folks who've already done some..?
So, what settings have you found to work best?
    Any other tweaks?
BTW I also have CS4 running in Boot Camp. if anyone can recommend the settings there I'd much appreciate it.
    Cheers!

    > But why, when there's a forum chock full of folks who've already done some..?
Because every composition has different requirements, every computer system is different, and every person is willing to make different trade-offs. There is no way to give a general recommendation if some people are working on web videos with hundreds of small motion graphics layers and other people are working on IMAX movies with only a few layers.
This page is the closest that you're going to get to a general recommendation:

  • Best Settings for a SD DVD with HD Video

So quick question and I just wanted to see if anyone has found a great solution for this.
We have HD Video (1440 x 1080) interlaced. (Looks amazing in Final Cut Pro. Did the roundtrip from color back to Final Cut Pro. Exported to a quicktime mov file using the same settings from the time timeline. (Still looks great) compressed it using compressor using the DVD Best Quality 90 minutes default settings. (File still looks great after its done) Burn it using DVD Studio Pro. Play it back on several TV's including a HD DVD and it looks awful. Although the footage is now in SD, i feel like it shouldn't look this bad.
    Any suggestions?

    This may help...

Usually just setting Field Dom to None in FCP (duplicate your sequence) helps immensely.
