Panasonic HDC SD900 & recording formats

Hi
I recently bought the above camcorder, and am very pleased with it
Am thinking of upgrading my software to FCE HD, from imovie
I wanted to just ask the wisdom of this community its thoughts around the various recording options I have, in the context of FCE HD ?
For ease of editing, I can record in "iframe", but this offers relatively low picture quality compared to other modes.
I can then record in 4 AVCHD modes, of varying quality. I understand FCE HD can convert and edit these files?
Or I can record in 1080/50p for the best quality. If I record in this mode of 1080/50p, can I edit the files on FCE HD ?
If I have to convert the 1080/50p file, what is the best software to use?
Does such conversion downgrade the picture so much it is just as effective to record in iframe?
Any guidance would be appreciated !
Many thanks in advance
Paul

Use the HA interlaced mode to get the best results working directly using FCE.
Log and Transfer over USB works without a glitch provided you select the Easy Setup>AVCHD-Apple Intermediate Codec1920x1080i 50 or 60 before starting a Project.
The 50 or 60 frame rate dependes on your video standard, either PAL or NTSC respectively.
50p won't work direclty, you could transcode this to interlaced but you will only end up with HA mode quality, double handling to end where you could have started.
BTW: My Pana is a treat to use. It's a 750. Blueray quality from the HA mode is outstanding. Regular DVD quality is OK.

  • HT3290 Panasonic HDC-SD900 - iMovie - AVCHD format

    Hi everyone
I have a Panasonic HDC-SD900 - when I'm in iMovie I don't see any of the clips I've filmed in AVCHD format - which is most of them. How do I see them in order to download them?
I'm using a MacBook Pro - latest OS X platform
    Thanks
    Cenwyn

Yes. Every time you transcode a clip there are some approximations that must be made.
Since your original footage is a heavily compressed format to begin with, it remains to be seen if using Streamclip will make it look worse.
    good luck.

  • Im trying to upload videos from my panasonic HDC-SD900 to my macbook pro 2012

Im trying to upload videos from my panasonic HDC-SD900 to my macbook pro 2012, nothing comes up when imovie is open, and i cannot see any of the videos. anyone know how to upload these videos??

Have you created a printer instance in your system, that corresponds to the physical printer?
System Preferences / Print & Scan, click on the plus + button and find your printer: IP, Windows or Bonjour (Default). Make sure the correct driver is selected and that any user-configurable settings (internal drive, duplex unit, etc.) are correctly set.

  • Panasonic HDC-SD9, AVCHD format & iMovie

The HDC-SD9 Panasonic is a high definition camcorder that records in the AVCHD format. Bear with me as I try to explain in layperson terms my question. I then created several Imovie events by removing the SD card from the camera and using a memory card reader to upload. I then created a separate Imovie Project by taking footage from various Events. I tried to copy the project onto a new SD card, place the SD card back in the camera and play the recording. However, the camera indicates "no data" on the card. So, a couple of questions: 1) Is this because the HD camera cannot read the Imovie codec? 2) What format/codec does Imovie convert the AVCHD to? 3) If I burn the project to a double-layered disk in High Definition will it play on a Blu-Ray DVD or a DVD that can read a high definition disk? 4) Bottomline is that I would like to edit the AVCHD footage captured on the Panasonic HDC-SD9 camcorder, burn to a disk and play it on a DVD player. Is this possible?

As you discovered, you cannot move a finished movie back to your camera for playback.
For playback on an Apple TV, shore using the LARGE preset, and you will get a 960x540 file that looks really good on a high definition TV if it has upscaling circuitry, because this is a simple upscale to 1920x1080.
If you want to burn a movie in full 1920x1080, there are several options.
    1) You can create it using iMovie's "Export using Quicktime" feature and watch it on your Mac. Use a 24" iMac for best results. It will use the entire screen.
    2) Same as #1 except you can watch it on a Sony Playstation 3.
    2) You can get Toast 9 with BluRay plug in and burn up 20 minutes or so of movies to a standard DVD. It might be more with a dual layer DVD but I have not tried it. Create your movie and export it using Quicktime in AIC or h.264 and the burn in Toast. Most BluRay players will read the DVD.
    3) If you have a BluRay burner, you can use Toast 9 to burn multiple movies up to theatrical length and maybe more.
See my post here for some details:

  • Panasonic HDC-SD900

    Hi all,
Can anyone advise me what import settings would be best to use, for importing Pal HD video into Premier elements.
    Thanks malc.

That camcorder shoots exclusively in 60p 1920x1080, a format that is technically not supported by Premiere Elements at this time.
However, one of our talented forum members has figured out a way to tweak the program so that it will work.
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/924247?tstart=0
This is not an official plug-in, so there is no technical support for it. But a number of users have found success with it.

  • Panasonic HDC-TM700 file formats

    Hi,
When I'm shooting, MTS files are created in the camera's memory.  I can copy and paste them to my PC.
If I'm using the software provided with the camera, HD writer AE 2.1, to copy the files to my PC they show as M2TS files.
PE elements 9 can work with both files.
Does anyone know the difference between these two files? Which one should I be using to create my movies?
    Thanks

There is no difference in the files other than the suffix.
However, as I advised you in your other post, you will only be able to successfully work with 60i and 50i video from this camcorder. Premiere Elements can not work with video shot in 50p or 60p format.

  • Panasonic AVCHD HA format HDC-SD900

I've read many posts around this topic but I remain unsure about the formats to use when editing and exporting. Despite years of home editing with Premier Pro.
Current Environment is CS6 , Panasonic HDC-SD900 camera. Recording in HA mode.     UK.   PAL mode.   Laptop Dell.  8Gig RAM. W7.  GE Force GT555M gaphics card.
My issue is marrying up the formats of the original recordings and keeping the quality in my epxorted editied 'sequences'.
    SO several questions...
Just what are the characteristics of Panasonics AVCHD HA  -  I know its  1920*1080 ,  17Mbs VBR.  But ....
Is it Anaorphic or not ?
Is it Interlaced or not ?
Is it Square Pixels or not ?
What Sequence settings should I use for editiing ?
    My Requirements.
To be able to edit  footage (in CS6) and export edited "SEQUENCES"  (via Media Encoder 6) in the closest format to orginal recorded so that I have a  "MASTER version of the Sequence, that is also viewable in PC players.   Eg. an  .mp4  (in H264 format - if that is the best)
I want to be able to select and view these "Sequences" from a HDD  (eg NAS or laptopn) for playback on PC, Laptop or streamed to a HD TV  via DLNA or whatever...
I also want to be able to use these same MASTER Sequences, import them into ENCORE 6,  to create Blu-Ray Disc in the future.
I currently output the sequences as M2v for DVD creation.  So all is fine there.  Cant avoid that quality drop.
    My problem.
If I view the edited sequence (based on the 1080i 25 preset I am currently using), via Media Player, then pausing a moving (panning) camera shot of people  will show a paused image with each individual person having a ghost shadow of themselves.  Whereas if I play the original AVCHD clip then a paused screen at the same spot shows an perfect clear  quality image. No ghosting.
Where am I losing the quality ?
    Thanks
    Kev

I realise the camera can record in 1080p50.  This is selected by  physical Button on the camera.  That is its highest setting. But I AM NOT using this.
I am recording in HA 1920 setting. Its not clear what this mode properties are. It is settable on the touch screen menu (and greyed out if/when the 1080p50 mode is selected).
Bringin me back to one of my initial questions...  is HA 1920  interlaced or progressive.  I can find no way of determining this other than PPro will select 1080i25 if I leave it to decide the 'sequence settings' for the m2ts clip.
    As a test....
I tried creating a 'sequence' in PPro CS6 at 50p mode but, as expected, when I drag my HA1920 .m2ts clip into it, it tells me the sequence settings do not match.
    SO...
I accepted the settings that PPro auto sets up... (1080i25) for the 'sequence' and then I exported  using H.264 / "HD 1080p 25" preset. It seems to solve the issue.
i.e. Its' easier to watch a panning shot and it pauses with a perfect image (unlike the image above).
    THIS IS PROGRESS....  THanks.
    However.....
Having the Ppro "Sequence" settiings at 1080p25 ALSO seem to give excellent results when exported at H.264 / "HD 1080p 25". Same output quality. No blurring and identical file sizes.
So this leaves me still slightly confused. What is the difference in edit mode ? Does it actually matter for editing and is it all in the export mode used?
I'd just like to ensure that I edit and export in a mode that is as close to shoot quality and minimal conversion/degradation/recoding or whatever, from the original M2TS file.
Still slightly confused but thanks for the help..

  • What are the format settings for the Panasonic HDC-HS9 on Final Cut Pro?

I have the Panasonic HDC-HS9 and I have recorded a load of stuff; however when it comes down to editing it I can't seem to get the right format setting/easy set up in Final Cut Pro.
    Can anyone help?

Have you used the Log and Transfer window and transcoded the AVCHD files that that camera records to ProRes? If not try that. AVCHD has to be transcoded in order for FCP 6 to work with it, and ProRes is a lossless compression so it's the way to go here I think. You open the preferences in the Log and Transfer window (opened by typing shiftcmd8). The prefs are in a button with a little gear picture on it in the Log and Transfer window. You navigate to the original files shot by your camera and choose ProRes 422 as the codec. Then set sequence settings to be ProRes. You also must have the latest FCP software to all to work.

  • IMovie 08 and Panasonic HDC-SD5 Camera

Hi Folks I have a Mac (lol), i have a Panasonic High Definition Camera and i have a problem. I connect the camera, i import the clip on my macintosh hd and i create my dvd with iDVD. But when I see my dvd i see that the video is ginned, with a very low quality. Why???
Info: Mac OS X 10.5.6 on MacBook 3.1 with 2.2 GHz Intel Core Duo processor, 2 Gb of RAM and Intel GMA X3100 graphic card.
Panasonic HDC-SD5 with 3CCD and high resolution (Full HD 1920x1080). It recorded with the AVCHD format.
    Thank you!!

If you have a PC and the generic software that comes with the camera you can as well.
If iMovie 08 can import high definition video can it not output it on its own as AVCHD (AVC/H.264 - MPEG4) to DVD?

  • Panasonic HDC-Z10000 Professional 3D Camcorder and AVCHD3D

I bought Panasonic HDC-Z10000 Professional 3D Camcorder. Format of shooting of AVCHD3D. Video from the camera is imported to the 2D. How to import the 3D?

I just bought two Canon HG10 AVCHD camcorder. I'll be using them for a few Smashing Pumpkins concerts in Philly in the next several days.
Here's what I found out so far just playing with them for 20 minutes.
AVCHD + iMove '08 or Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 /= PowerPC
It's not going to work on a PowerPC Mac.
    Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 says:
    Warning:
AVCHD media is unsupported on PowerPC based hardware.
    iMovie '08 says:
    AVCHD Device not supported
An Intel-based Macintosh is required to capture AVCHD video; try changing your camcorder settings to standard definition.
I didn't buy this camcorder for standard def. I did not bother trying that option.
It worked on my Intel MacBook Pro with Final Cut Pro 6.0.1. I don't have iMovie installed on there so I didn't try it.
I recorded a clip about a minute long, 01:01:13 to be exact. I put
the camcorder in USB mode and it mounts on my PowerPC and Intel Mac's
    without installing any software.
Going through the file structure I find
    /Volumes/CANON_HDD/AVCHD/BDMV/STREAM/00000.MTS
    MTS = MPEG Transport Stream
    That file is 119.6 mb.
I can get the .MTS to play in VLC Media Player but it crashes after a few seconds.
Final Cut Pro 6.0.1 has no idea what to do with .MTS files. When dragging to the bin I get File error: unknown type. You have to go to File > Log And Transfer. Not File > Log And Capture like you
normally would to capture a tape.
From there it transcodes the .MTS file using the Apple ProRes 422 codec. This takes time and makes your nice little 119.6mb file about EIGHT times as big. The file is 929.3 mb! One gigabyte for one minute! It's 24p and 1080 x 1920 though.

  • Panasonic HDC 900 series

    HI
I am thinking of purchasing a Panasonic SD900, and will store and edit the movies on my imac. A couple of questions, for the collective brain of this forum, if I may:
    - I believe FCE will handle the AVCHD files much better than other applications (imovie etc) in terms of importing, editing and export. Is this the case? Does it keep it in AVCHD format, or does it re-code it? Any recommendations for how I should handle the workflow or files themselves ?
    - I believe AVCHD is the optimium recording format I should use for max  quality. Is this the case, or do you record on other settings ?
Many thanks for any help or thoughts!

I've used the TM700 which appears to be similar in its recording format.  You ingest media from this camera into FCE via the Log and Transfer function.  During that process, FCE transcodes AVCHD files to the Apple Intermediate Codec, and they become ENORMOUS (around 40GB for an hour of footage).  You'd be wise to invest in an 7200RPM external firewire drive.

  • About to buy Panasonic HDC-SD9: Advice on handling large AVCHD files

I'm getting married soon and want to buy a Hi-Def camcorder to use during the wedding ceremony and honeymoon. I like to Panasonic HDC-SD9 but have some basic questions. Please accept my ignorance!
    a) I understand that the HDC-SD9 records in AVCHD, which on conversion to AIC in IMovies 8 greatly increases the file size. The harddrive on my Macbook is only 120GB and a converted one-hour AVCHD video is likely to make a serious dent into this. What is the best way to handle this?
    b) Should I use the disk utility to make a copy of the SD card and delete the files from the SD card? How do I ressurect this when I need to use the raw footage? Can I play directly from the Disk Copy?
    c) Should I convert the large AIC file into another form to save it on my harddrive? What is the best format to reduce file size? How do I do this?
    d) Ideally, we want to give our wedding guests a copy of the wedding footage on a standard def DVD. Can we use IDVD to make a DVD from the AIC file? How much footage can be stored on a normal DVD?
    e) What programmes can be used to play the AVCHD file? Can I play it back on Quicktime 7.5.5?
    Many thanks

If you go the AVCHD route; My suggestion to most of the questions is to buy an external hard drive (format to Mac OS Extended) and load your footage to that and keep the drive. Then guard it with your life.
IMO: Tape is still an option that has advantages. The tape is a backup and they are inexpensive.
Most NLEs work with the formats and file sizes are smallish. AVCHD can bloat to nearly 50 gig an hour, DV, no more than 13.5 gig.

  • How does one transfer from imovie to fce without loss of quality. Using a panasonic hdc-tm15 full hd 1920x1080

I am capturing my footage on a Panasonic hdc-tm15 full hd 1920x1080 avchd. The format recorded is not compatible with fce so i have to import to imovie first. what export settings do i need to use to ensure i dont lose quality when going from imovie to fce?

It is suggested to output MOV with AIC codec to keep the raw video quality at max.
Output like this: Share->Export Using QuickTime..
In pop-up windows, click Options->in Moive Settings pop-up window, click Settings button->In Compression Type box, choose Apple Intermediate Codec
    Good luck.

  • Editing AVCHD (Panasonic HDC-HS20)

    Greetings,
I searched for similar issues and read about people having trouble with AVCHD, but I honestly don't understand how to edit and export a high quality video, when it comes to PAL.
The video was shot as HA (about 17 Mbps VBR - 1920x1080/50i) with a Panasonic HDC-HS20. And I'm using Premere Pro CS4. Windows 7, Intel Core 2 Duo 2.93 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, NVIDIA 9400 GT.
The new project settings I chose were: AVCHD, 1080i25 (50i) Anamorphic and it says this:
For editing AVCHD Formats recorded in 1920x1080 square pixels (non-anamorphic).
16:9 interlaced HD video at 25 frames per second.
    48kHz audio.
    General
Editing mode: AVCHD 1080i square pixel
    Timebase: 25.00fps
    Video Settings
    Frame size: 1920h 1080v (1.0000)
    Frame rate: 25.00 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: Square Pixels (1.0)
    Fields: Upper Field First
    The export settings were:
    1440 x 1080i 25 High Quality
PAL, 1440x1080 25, Upper field, Widescreen 16:9, High Profile, 4.0
But the video doesn't play correctly on WMP, as if there was something bad with the frames, and it looks completely distorted when I upload it to YouTube.
I'm sorry if I'm missing something obvious here, but I really don't know what to do. Any help would be more than appreciated.
Thank you very much in advance.

    >using Premere Pro CS4
In that case, you should have posted in http://forums.adobe.com/community/premiere/premierepro_previous since CS5 is quite a bit different
