Panic loop after patching solaris 10 x86

I have installed a number of patches on to my server and think I have messed things up somehow, wrong order, not in single user mode, missing dependencies, not rebooting, etc...
After installing I rebooted and now am stuck in a panic loop. I have gathered as much information as possible below.
The server is a Sunfire V20z running Solaris 10.
If anyone can interpret the below information and point me in the right direction that would be much appreciated.
Thanks.

I am seeing something similar to this, but I can bring it up and it crashed after a random amount of time. Any ideas what patches could have caused this?

  • "Short read error" after patching solaris 10 x86?

We recently bought an Ultra 20 with Solaris 10. The first thing we did was attempt to patch it with smpatch. Specifically, we did the following steps:
    > smpatch update
    > shutdown -i s -g 0
    > smpatch add -x idlist=/var/sadm/disallowed_patch_list
    > reboot
When the machine rebooted we got a "short read error" message when trying to load in various drivers and wouldn't boot. We assumed that the disk had crashed and we reinstalled solaris from the DVDs. After the reinstallation, we went to patch the machine again, with the same steps, and exactly the same thing happened!
So is there something wrong with patching solaris 10 on x86? Has anybody else experienced this problem where the patching corrupts the disks (or the drivers)?
    Thanks.
    Karl

There have always been "short read error"s during boot on <b>some</b> systems with Solaris 10 x86 since the release.

Do you get the error every time during boot? Sometimes it helps to
press <RETURN> at the boot prompt, and not let the system wait for
    the five second timeout.

  • Apache cores after patching Solaris 10

    Hi Folks,
after patching Solaris 10 with the recommended Patch Cluster i'm not able to start Apache with apachectl sslstart.
Apache cores! Changing <VirtualHost default:443> to <IP-Addr.:443> in ssl.conf solves the problem.
    Any idea why?

    hi;
I faced that problem when I was a beginner on solaris as you were. I tried to install solaris to my windows installed x86 based PC. in my fisrst few attempts ý always saw that message, afterwards somehow I managed to install solaris to my PC but this time windows failed.I think that is because of the inconsistencies between those OS but if you need to install solaris you can use VM ware workstation with this software you can use both OS without problems.

  • No signal at all after installing solaris-10 x86

After successfully installing Solaris-10 x86 on my sytem when I try to boot , there is a Sendmail alert that "My unqualified host name sleeping for retry" and after that there is no signal on monitor . though CPU is running and accessing hard disk. This leave me with no option.
System is not on the network and having Pentium-4 processor and 915G chipset motherbord.

I'm guessing your X11 is misconfigured. You need to make the settings match what your monitor can display.

My recommendation would be to update or uninstall the app that is using it. Remember OS X does not have to be running the app in order for the KP to occur, it just needs to "see" it. If you choose to uninstall locate and follow the developers instructions for doing so.

  • Ypserv loops after patching

I applied the latest (Aug/25/06) patch set the other day. On my NIS master ypserv, after a time greater then 10 minutes, goes into a loop taking over one out of my processors.
    4979 root 1 0 0 5576K 2176K cpu3 95:00 24.99% ypserv
In syslog there is a warning on startup.
    ypserv[4979]: [ID 783678 daemon.warning] /usr/lib/netsvc/yp/ypserv: no /var/yp/securenets file
But securenets has never been required.
I don't know much about dtrace but from what I have extracted from it is:
    errors:
1 ypserv stat 2 No such file or directory
1 ypserv fcntl 22 Invalid argument
1 ypserv getmsg 11 Resource temporarily unavailable
1 ypserv open64 2 No such file or directory
    1 ypserv lwp_wait 45 Deadlock condition.
The deadlock interest me but I don't know how to figure out what is causin g the deadlock.
I tried a dtruss. It is mainly doing:
    36254 pollsys(0x63A50, 0x5, 0x0) = 1 0
    36261 ioctl(0x5, 0x530F, 0xFFBFFA3C) = 1 0
    36263 fstat(0x5, 0xFFBFF960, 0xFEEC2000) = 0 0
    36268 lwp_sigmask(0x3, 0x0, 0x0) = 0xFFFF 0
    36269 lwp_sigmask(0x3, 0x2000, 0x0) = 0xFFFF 0
Not a huge help. The only thing it tried top open while I was watching it
    was:
    open("/dev/ticotsord\0", 0x2, 0x0) = 9 0
If someone could point me to a few other things to try to figure out why ypserv is gone into training for "America's Got Talent" the infinate loop edition, I would love to hear it.
Part of the process of figuring this out has been reading documentation, and for the first time in a while I've been very disapointed about the lack of man pages on Solaris. Did I forget to install a package or are there a lower standard for documentation coming out of Sun? For example I go looking for the man page for lwp_sigmask. It doesn't exist. sigmask does, but that syscall only takes 1 argument, when as we can see above lwp_sigmask takes 3.
I could back out of the patches, but I haven't had to do that under Solaris in ten years of administration and I would rather not start now.
    Thanks for the help.

Since you mention dtrace, I assume you are referring to a solaris 10 machine.
Its possible you are hitting the "tcp_fusion" bug there was a recent advisory about.
    Try adding
    set ip_do_tcp_fusion=0
    to /etc/system and rebooting.

After the latest patch update, my tablet AT300se not booting up.
Some one please provide me the Stock ROM ?
i am in India now and i can't find any toshiba tablet service center in India.

    > is ti possible to get the stock ROM or custom ROM?
I dont think so since the updates are received via Toshiba Service Station.
Unfortunately, I think you last chance to get this device running, is a Toshiba authorized service point.

  • Driver for Intel Corp. Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG in Solaris 10 x86

    Hi Folks,
I bought a Laptop with the NIC mentioned in the Subject. After installing Solaris 10 x86 I'd like to install a driver for this card. Can someone of you tell me how, or point me to a good documentation?
    Cheers
    Sven

as far as i know, intel wireless not supported yet in solaris 10.
damn, intel and solaris have not realy work our on their support relationships. No wonder Sun went for AMD. :p

  • Keyboard messed up on Solaris 10 x86 after applying patch update

I have run into a keyboard problem on my Solaris 10 desktop. The keyboard is messed up. When I type root then it echoes as eiir. It is a Solaris 10 x86 system with PS/2 keyboard. The keyboard layout is US-English and type is generic 104 keys. The keyboard works fine in text mode but gets messed up as soon as the graphical login screen comes up.
The output for eeprom kbd-type is kbd-type=US-English(104-Key).
The output for kbd -l is
    type=6
    layout=33 (0x21)
    delay(ms)=500
    rate(ms)=40.
Running command showrev -p | grep 118966 shows

My keyboard was working fine till around a couple of days back and messed up after performing updates with Sun Update Manager. The patch 118966-21 was installed during that update and so was patch 118844-30. I have not tried uninstalling either of these patches to see if that fixes the problem. Should I?
    Please help!!! Thanks

    Problem solved... me the n00b...
After reading the log in /var/dt/Xerrors more closely this time I found that it was trying to load module "Keyboard" for the device "Keyboard1" and was not able to find that module. The log was also suggesting that this module is deprecated and I should use "kbd" instead... Made the changes in xorg.conf and things are good now...

  • Solaris patching on solaris 10 x86

just wondering if anyone can assist. i have just installed solaris 10 x86 recommended patches on a 16 disks server. where first 2 disks are mirrored called rpool, and remaining 14 disks are raid z called spool. upon installing the patches successfully and rebooting server, i am coming up with the following error:
NOTICE: Can not read the pool label from '/pci@0,0/pci8086,25f8@4/pci111d,801c@0/pci111d,801c@4/pci108e,286@0/disk@0,0:a /pci@0,0/pci8086,25f8@4/pci111d,801c@0/pci111d,801c@4/pci108e,286@0/disk@1,0:a'

    rebooting...
It looks like the solaris 10 os cannot find zfs filesystem and keeps on rebooting in normal solaris os mode, but when I go to safe mode and type: zfs list, I can see zfs rpool (mirrored) file system and cannot see the zfs spool (raid z) file system, any ideas on how i can fix the boot problem and get zfs spool back in the safest way possible?...

I finally figured it out. It seems that kernel patch 137138-09 was the culprit. It took me a while to test each kernel patch but I found out that if you have a mirrored volume or a virtual logical volume this will affect you. Also, after I did all this testing I finally found the sunsolve article referencing this patch. Seems you can install the patch, but you have to install 125556-01 first. Here's the article: http://sunsolve.sun.com/search/document.do?assetkey=1-66-246206-1

  • Fresh solaris 10 x86 install patch update problems 119060-17 ...

Just yesterday, i installed a fresh Solaris 10 x86 onto some pc hardware. After getting solaris installed and issues with my network card, i downloaded and installed the free version of the update manager 1.0.x. Next, i proceeded to update all the general patches for the solaris 10 system. I started with the command 'pprosvc -i' from a terminal. It then proceeded to download and validate a bunch of patches successfully until it hit the following 3 patches:
    119060-17 ---- X11 6.6.2_x86: Xsun patch
    122213-10 ---- GNOME 2.6.0_x86: GNOME Desktop Patch
    122912-02 ---- SunOS 5.10_x86: Apache 1.3 Patch
All 3 failed some kind of validation and then crashed the pprosvc program, at which point it exited with the following error:
    122912-02 cannot be validated
    119060-17 cannot be validated
    122912-02 cannot be validated
Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digital signature(s).
I also tried to use the GUI Update Manager to update, hoping the problem was isolated to pprosvc, but that problem was also in the GUI with a similar error message:
Error occurred...The detailed error message is: Unexpected Failure: java.lang.Throwable: ERROR: Failed to validate the digitial signature(s)
Anyone know why Sun's update patch process is so troublesome?
    Getting Tired of Solaris Updates...
I should mention that this is the free solaris 10 x86 install and i don't have a service contract with Sun. If this problem persists, i don't think i'll get one, as i see only further problems after buying one.
    tired and confused

    Hi,
    There is an issue with this that is currently being investigated. There is another thread that may shed some light on what is happening here;
    http://forum.sun.com/jive/forum.jspa?forumID=316
Thread title is : Sun UC, Digitally Signed Patches Using New Verisign Certificates
In the short-term please ensure that the patch mentioned in it is installed.
To quote part of mentioned thread above:
"Once the Sun Update Connection client software is upgraded with patch 121118-06 (SPARC) or 121119-06 (x86/x64) or later revisions normal behavior will resume. "
    If this fails to resolve your problem, would you be kind enough to post the output of the following command for analysis please;
    # showrev -p | egrep -e '121454|121119|120336|121082|121564|122232|119789'

  • Last kernel patch for Solaris 10 x86 screwed up my kernel

    Hi,
The last kernel patch for Solaris 10 x86 (sorry I cant remember the patch id, but the revision is 30), available from Sun Update Manager screwed up my system.
The system is still booting but in maintenance mode: smf can't start because of repository corrupted. Given instructions to restore the repository does not work because / filesystem is mounted read-only...
As I am not a solaris expert, I will reinstall it from CD. I hope I won't loose the filesystem.
I was used to blindly trust Sun solaris patches, that was a mistake.
    Laurent.

i dont know why but still i do get default log in into the single mode
    after startup
    Requesting maintenance mode
(See /lib/svc/share/README for aditional information. )

dont know what to do else, also tried to synchronize boot-archive from solaris failsafe ...
