Paragraph background fill also applies character background fill

This is what I want and see in iBooks Author:
This is what I get and see in iBooks on an iPad 1:
Note the difference in the last line of text and the grey background: "expensive: satellites worth $370M were lost." acts as if there's a character background fill when I only have a parapgraph background fill applied. This seems like a bug either in iBooks Author or iBooks 2. Has anyone run into this? Any suggestions for a fix?

You may have inadvertantly selected background character fill. You want a text box object that contains this text and then you want to select background fill for the whole text box.
TIP
I noticed that some text boxes can have a different background fills depending on the mode vertical or portrait. So I choose both views to check to see if I am getting what I want. I simply fill the background in both views.
One has to be careful that only the text box is selected otherwise you will end up filling the background for selected text. In your example turn on invisibles and check to see if a few were included in your fill producing the effect you have displayed.
Check both views in IA.

    In the preferences menu, under "composing" There is an option for "Create Notes & To Do's in:" With the options being "On My Mac" and "[email protected]".
    I did not have this set properly, and changing it meant that selecting text in a note and making a to do gave me the option of putting it in my local calendars.
    However, when I select text from an e-mail it still puts it in my "[email protected]" calendar.

  • Paragraph background changes in iPad

    The section headings in iBooks Author change their format when loaded (via “preview”) onto iPad (this is iPad Air, but same thing happens on iPad 3 and Mini).
    Setup for section heads in landscape only iBook.
    Text Alignment: center
    Character spacing 0
    Line spacing 1
    Before, after para 0
    Inset 0
    Nothing checked under “more” in text formatting except paragraph background.
    In iBooks, the spacing is correct: Section has a background cold, and text is has equal space, top and bottom.
    When I preview it, the spacing is correct while it’s loading, but once loading is complete, the spacing changes, and the top of the paragraph gets lopped off.
    Anyone noticed this problem? Thanks.

    I exported a .ibooks file, but can't figure out how to get it over to iPad. Dragging it to a connected iPad in iTunes doesn'r seem to work. Copying it to iBooks for Mac makes it readable on iMac, but doesn't sync it to iBooks in cloud, so it doesn't get to iPad. (At least it hasn't synced in the last 2 hours. But it is 1.78 GB, so that might take a long time??)
    But there has to be a way I'm missing to get it directly from Mac to iPad. Thanks.

  • Getting ALL applied Character Styles in a paragraph

    I'm trying to get all applied Character Styles of a paragraph in a InDesign CS2 Document.
    With myParagraph.appliedCharacterStyle I just get the first but not all applied Charcter Styles.
    Is there a possibility to get them?

    If they're applied directly and not by nested style, then you should examine the appliedCharacterStyle of each TextStyleRange in the paragraph.
    If they're applied by nested style, you have to do a lot more work.

  • InDesign erroneously applies character style to imported text

    For a year, I had been importing text into InDesign with little trouble until this problem starting happening and I can't figure out why.
    Let's say I have a CS3 file with defined character and paragraph styles.
    If I draw an empty text box, InDesign shows the character style "superscript" and paragraph style "ext_all" are applied. I can select "Break Link to Style," but if I import text into that box, the "superscript" character style is applied.
    The following happens whether I create a text box first or not:
    If I import a styled Word file, all the text comes in styled "superscript" until it reaches a Word character style.
    If I import an InDesign Tagged Text file, all the text comes in styled "superscript" until it reaches a character tag.
    If I import a very simple one sentence rtf file, all the text is styled "superscript."
    Anyone run into this? I've tried googling, but can't find a discussion about it. Thanks in advance!

    Perhaps you've inadvertently set those styles as the defaults? That would happen if you click on them with nothing selected. For the current document switch to the text tool and make sure there is no cursor active or text frame selected, then check to see that the character style is set to [None] and the paragraph style to what you would like to be your default. Also check the settings in the character and paragraph panels.
    To make sure this doesn't carry forward into any more new documents, if indeed that was the problem, close all documents and repeat the above steps. With no documents open your selections will become the defaults for all new work until changed.

  • Apply character formats in the Marker window

    We need the ability to apply character formats (including superscript and subscript) in the Marker window. I use this feature to generate LOM files, which are greatly helpful, but after generation, I must edit the file directly to apply character tags to individual items to correspond with the style of the text from which the markers have been generated.
    For example, I have a list of warnings at the beginning of my book. I place a marker in each warning in the chapters to generate the list of markers. Some of the warnings in the chapters contain the product name which includes an Italic character and a superscript registration character. (The client's style is to use the registration character at every instance.) When I place the text in the Marker window, I have no way to include the character formats for Italics and superscript. Therefore, when the list of warnings is generated, the product name is not styled correctly, and I must edit every instance in that file--every time I generate for a revision.
    If the Marker window would accept character format codes like the Variable window does, the problem would be solved.

    I've never done a LOM, but if you are pulling across text at the marker, and LOMs work like TOCs, try the following.
    Apply a Character format to the source text with the attributes you need.
    Make sure that format also exists in the Character Catalog of the LOM file.
    In the case of TOCs, this causes the TOC lines to use that Character format (as defined in the TOC, as long as the format name is the exactly the same).

    B)my next question is how to get textstyle ranges of a selected paragraph.
    please help me.
    Thanks
    Tahir

    A) Make sure that the all parcels of the text is composed before you iterate it, see ITextParcelListComposer. I don't quite understand what you are trying to achieve. You want to apply a character style to a range of text, but the code iterates wax lines and iterate the runs of each line  and sets the current selection to be the run on each iteration. Why not just:
    InterfacePtr<ICommand> icmd(textmodelCmds->ApplyStyleCmd(index, length,styleUID,kCharAttrStrandBoss,kFalse));
    B) Walk the kCharAttrStrands to the get information:
    InterfacePtr<IStrand> strand((IStrand*)textmodel->QueryStrand(kCharAttrStrandBoss,IStrand::kDefaultIID));
    then call stand->GetRunLength() a number of times until, you are through the selected part of the text / paragraph

  • Applescript-Apply Character Style to Select Words in InDesign CC

    I'm trying to apply a character style to the first several words of a paragraph. The number of words varies, but it is essentially every word before a comma.
    Here's what I have so far:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CC 2014"
      tell document 1
      tell page 2
      tell (item 1 of page items whose label is "HabitsContent")
      tell paragraph 2
      repeat with i from 1 to count of characters
      if contents of character i = "," then
      exit repeat
      end if
      end repeat
      set applied character style of characters 1 thru i to "Italic"
      end tell
      end tell
      end tell
      end tell
    end tell
    Viewing the log of the script, it finds the comma; however, the script ends up italicizing the entire paragraph. Any ideas?

    For anyone else who has a similar question, here's what works:
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CC 2014"
    tell paragraph 2 of (item 1 of page items whose label is "HabitsContent") of page 2 of document 1
    set a to paragraph 1 as list
    set a to text item 1 of a
    set old to AppleScript's text item delimiters
    set AppleScript's text item delimiters to {","}
    set font style of characters 1 thru (count of text item 1 of a) to "Italic"
    set AppleScript's text item delimiters to old
    end tell
    end tell

  • Finding MANUALLY applied character styles

    Hi all,
    We're in the process of switching to an XML workflow, and as one of our interim steps we're applying tags to paragraph and character styles in some of our documents. I'm aware of the option to map styles to tags and this should work well for paragraph styles. However, we're looking for a way to only map the character styles that have been manually applied.
    As an example, we have a paragraph style for instructions that has a bold number nested at the beginning of each paragraph. In other places, the same character style may be used to bold a specific word, but it is applied manually. Is it possible to map to tags ONLY the character styles that were applied manually? We do not want tags identifying character styles that were applied via Nested Styles or GREP Styles.
    I am assuming this would take some sort of script, which is why I'm posting in the scripting forum. Does anyone know if this is possible?
    Thanks in advance,
    Matthew

    Another InDesign oddity!
    If you fill a frame full of placeholder text and assign a "Bold" character style to, for example, a Nested Style:1 word, and a GREP style \<\w{4,6}\>, then use regular (or GREP) Find Text to search for the character style, it'll only highlight words that are at the start of the paragraph. Now that is wrong, wrong, wrong, because
    (a) it should not find any of them -- if you click your cursor into one of these bolded words, the Character Style panel says it's [None].
    or
    (b) it should find all of them, not just those that happen to be at the start of a paragraph. (BTW -- it's not the Nested Style it picks up; when using only GREP styles it'll also find words-at-the-start).
    It is funny, if things like this tickle you, that in a script "findText" works exactly the same. However: if you 'found' bold text and then interrogate what character style it has applied, it will only return your "bold" style if it was applied manually.
    See this script -- test with a placeholder text, aforementioned Nested/GREP styles, and a few hand-picked words that you applied "bold" to yourself. It will only report the ones you marked.
    app.findTextPreferences = null;
    app.findTextPreferences.appliedCharacterStyle = "bold";
    list = app.activeDocument.findText();
    r = [];
    while (list.length)
         next = list.pop();
         if (next.appliedCharacterStyle == app.activeDocument.characterStyles.item("bold"))
              r.push (next.contents);
    alert (r.join("\r"));

  • [JS][CS3]Applying Character Style to First Word

    I am a noob as far as Javascript  is concerned, and I was hoping for a little guidance.
    Here's my scenario: I have a book that has been typeset all in one file; the main content is all in one story. I want to select the first word of every text frame on each page and apply a character style. My goal is to utilize this character style to indicate page breaks in the XML--I'll map the style to a specific tag.
    So far I have this poor specimen:
    var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
    var myPage = myDocument.pages.item(1);
    var myTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.item(0);
    if( app.activeDocument.stories[0].paragraphs[0].words[0] != null )
    myTextFrame.paragraphs.item(0).words.item(0).appliedCharacterStyle =
    myDocument.characterStyles.item('foo');
    I know, I haven't set up any sort of loop yet (which will be trickier given the fact that there will be blank versos, etc). What I'm trying to do in this is to select the first word in the first paragraph on the second page--which it does in fact do. Problem is, the first paragraph on the second page starts on the first page, so I'm selecting that a word on the first page, not the second page.
    As I said, lots of work to do but a little help on getting to the right word would be most appreciated.

    Well, you were on the right track, but testing 'myText' fails if there is no text frame on a page because it fails one line earlier
    >var myTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.item(0);
    just before this, you should test the number of text frames:
    if (myPage.textFrames.length > 0)
      ... your stuff ..
    Only use this if you are absolutely positive there is just a single text frame on each page! A slightly better way would be to always loop over each textframe:
    for (frames=0; frames<myPage.textFrames.length; frames++)
      var myTextFrame = myPage.textFrames.item(frames);
      ..etc.
    in which case you also don't have to test its length first (the loop will not be executed if there are zero text frames).
    [Techy] Since you have only one continuous story, an even better way would be to loop over the textframes of that story alone. You have to identify the story somehow, and I usually click the text cursor in the one I need:
    myStory = app.selection[0].parentStory;
    or you can rely on the fact that the story starts in the only text frame on page 1:
    myStory = app.activeDocument.pages[0].stories[0];
    (I think that oughta work.) Then, each frame of this story up till the end can be found in the array
    myStory.textContainers
    which are usually text frames. You can loop over these using
    for (frame=0; frame<myStory.textContainers.length; frame++)
      myTextFrame = myStory.textContainers[frame];
    ..etc.

  • InDesign Paragraph Style won't apply / change

    0 down vote  favorite
    Im hoping someone might be able to help me troubleshoot an InDesign question. Im a beginner-to-intermediate user.
    I am unable to apply my Paragraph Style to a number of my text boxes. I have tried holding Opt/Alt while choosing the PS with no luck. I have also checked for local overrides and character styles, and there appear to be none. The fly-out menu from the Paragraph Styles menu is almost all greyed-out, so it won't let me select the Clear Overrides option.
    However, when I double-click the text box to go into the frame, I am able to select the text directly and then apply the paragraph style to it directly inside the frame. This seems weird; Im hoping there's a way that I can just select the frames normally and apply a paragraph style as usual.
    The text came from a Word document that was flowed into each chapter, if that gives any help.
    Looking forward to some advice. Cheers, -Ben

    P Spier, thank you very much. What is the work around then to achieve this? Simply selecting all the text in all of the threaded frames and applying the Paragraph Style directly to them? Is it possible to select all of the threaded frames at the same time and apply the Paragraph Style to it? Advice for best method of practice is much appreciated.

  • How to chnge cmyk and also apply color profiles in bridge

    Hi
    i want to apply color profile for selceted files in brige

    Does any one know how you can adjust the font size (point size) for the file
    names.
    Sadly enough you can't chance that, feel free to add a feature request for
    that, the more there ask for the bigger chance it will be realized.
    It would be great if the colors for the image name (background and font color)
    could be changed so the contrast could also be increased so it is also easier
    to read.
    And this the cheerful part, go to Bridge preferences General tap and play
    with the sliders for user interface and Image Backdrop until your satisfied.
    BTW using the slider for thumbnail size bottom right of the Bridge window to
    increase the thumbs does not increase the font but makes it nevertheless a
    little clearer.

  • Clicking a Paragraph Style Does Not Apply Style to Text

    I just switched from a PC to a brand new MacBook Pro (OSX Lion 10.7), and I bought InDesign CS5.5. I have been using CS4 on a PC for a couple of years and had no issues. For some reason, I cannot apply Paragraph Styles by placing my cursor in the text and clicking the Paragraph style. It highlights the clicked style for a moment, and then de-highlights all the styles, but does not apply any changes. The only way I can apply a Paragraph Style right now is by right clicking the style and selecting "Apply..." from the drop down menu. It's very puzzling. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this. I also have Microsoft Office: Mac 2011 installed on the laptop if that makes a difference to anyone. Any help would be greatly appreciated, since I typeset and edit for my living, and this problem is slowing me down a bit.

    Neither. Let's say I click into a paragraph. The current style will be highlighted. If I click on another style (or even attempt to re-apply the same style by clicking on it in the styles pane), it momentarily highlights the new style, then flashes a little bar underneath (like the one that shows up if I were to try to re-organize the styles list by dragging a style to a different pace in the styles list), then all the styles become unselected, but no changes have been applied to the paragraph in question. Very definitely not normal. It is almost as if the pane assumes that I am attempting to drag the style even when I am merely clicking on it. Very weird.

  • InDesign CS4 - Paragraph Style - Justification not applying

    Hello,
    I am in college and Indesign is the software we use for our projects.  The version we have is CS4.  This is the second project where I've had an issue with the justification.  I can use the justification icons at the top to move the text where I want it after applying the paragraph style, but this causes the little override + to show up and that's not allowed.  My instructor says we should use the style itself.  I'm happy to do that and have found the justification area in the paragraph style setup, however, no matter what justification I specify (with the text highlighted and preview enabled), the text does not move.  I've also set it, applied it then gotten back to the document just in case it was a preview-only error but it still doesn't change.
    Do I need to justify everything THEN apply the paragraph style to get around this?  If the justify option in the paragraph style settings doesn't actually move the text, what is it's intended purpose?
    Thank you in advance for your assistance.

    Do you mean this justification tab?
    If so, I think it's purpose is to set the behavior of how single-word paragraphs are displayed when full justification is applied. In the previous screen shot, the third line of the paragraph is a single word (Obitatur), and all of the text is set to Full Justify (if you hover your cursor over the justification icons at the top of the screen, it's the one that reads: Justify all lines). Here, you can see that all of the letters are justified across the text frame, because Single Word Justification is set to Full Justify. Here are a few other examples:
