Paragraph Rules - Showing at top of Columns

We are wanting to change from Quark to Indesign. In Quark, the "rule above" will not show when the text is at the top of a column. With Indesign. using the same styles and text, etc., the rule above shows up above the text outside the text box and I don't want it there in this particular instant. I just want the rule to show within the rest of the text. Not at the top of the column.
Any thoughts?
Here is an example of what I'm talking about. Notice the rule is outside the text frame. We don't want these to show up. The alternative is to place a white box on top of the text frame to cover these rules. Don't really like that idea. We need this to work similar to Quark.

Ideally it should be an option to either show it or not...

How do I apply a paragraph rule "above" but not when first in a column. In other words, the rule above will only run if it isn't the first paragraph in the column (even if it appears in a multi-column text frame).
Before you jump the gun: Rule below will not solve that, for various reasons.

Here a similar way to yours with an anchored block. Copy it and launch this simple regex. Easy with no headache!

  • Horizontal paragraph rule across two-column text frame?

    Hi,
as the title suggests, how do i get a horizontal rule to run across a two-column text frame?
    I have either had the rule just apply to the entered text; had a gap where the column gutter is;
or I have had to set the column gutter to 0mm/px and manually set carriage returns to give the impression of a gutter.
Surely there is a better way?
I'll attach a jpeg of my various options.
Hope I've been clear-enough. All help is appreciated.
    Cheers, Matt

You can put the rule in a paragraph which is spanning a columns.
Or you can extend the paragraph rules by inputing minus values to left and right (e.g. -5mm)
Or you can use a table instead.
Or you can use negative left and right intend for the text but extend the rule to the end of the frame.
Never set a carriage return manually.

  • Top x for "show data as % of column"

I have the below requirement: (obiee 11g)
Attribute - Value - % of total value
I am calculating "% of total value" by creating duplicate column and selecting "show data as % of column". This is working fine.
Now there is an additional requirement to display "top x" values based on "value" column or "% of total value" column.
If I add filter "top 10" on "value" - % of total value is getting calculated only based on those 10 values but not all values.
How I can display consistent "% of total value" based on sum of total "value" but not just top x with the ability to show top 5, or top 10 etc.
    Your responses are highly appreciated.
    thanks.

  • How can I make a paragraph rule transparent?

I have a requirement to use a paragraph rule but I need it to be transparent. I cannot figure a way to do this or via any other technique in indesign. In reality I want them to be included in a character or paragraph style.
Your help is appreciated. I am on CS5.5 and an indesign veteran of some 12 years now...

My method is a bit of a tricky method, but I think it works.
Select the text frame, and choose Edit>Place and Link Story.
You are given a Loaded Cursor with identical text.
Place this in the exact same location and send it to the back.
Give the text at the back a Paragraph Rule above, to suit. And give it a white rule.
Change the Back Frame transparency to suit.
Then Make sure your original text frame is on top.
When you update the text in the main frame - then you can update the text via the Links panel so the rule behind suits

  • (new to scripting) Only allow certain paragraph styles to break to next column/page

    Hi all,
As stated, I'm very new to scripting. I've done a few small scripts to automate Photoshop tasks and such. I'm in the process of trying to learn Javascript as much as possible, with the hope of bringing about more efficiency for our small production department. It's a daunting task, but I'm trying my darnedest.
One of the number one goals I have is the find a way to automate pagination of weekly transaction records. These records run between 32 to 48 pages normally, with each page having 5 columns. Creation of these pages is very systematic, so it would seem that this process should be able to be automated, but there are some challenges I'm having a hard time thinking about how to attack.
One of the key tasks needing to be figured out is getting the records to go in with headings and subheadings always starting at the top of a page/column. Just about all the copy comes in with predetermined paragraph styles, so a script should easily be able to search for instances of each style. What needs to eb accomplished is only allowing the flow of copy to break on certain styles and not others ... (counties, towns, etc.)
For example: if you have the following  ...
    Countyland <styled "county">
    Utopiatown <styled "town">
    46 Appletree Lane ...... $500,000  <styled "listing">
Sold by: Some Guy   <styled "listing">
Bought by: Other Guy  <styled "listing">
    Mortgage: This Bank  <styled "listing">
    Date: 12/14/11  <styled "listing">
    Dystopia Village <styled "town">
    47 Orangeplant Road ...... $400,000  <styled "listing">
Sold by: Some Guy   <styled "listing">
Bought by: Other Guy  <styled "listing">
    Mortgage: This Bank  <styled "listing">
    Date: 12/14/11  <styled "listing">
If the two records above were to fall near the end of a column, the break to the next column should NOT occur anywhere except:
    - Before the county (causing the county to start at the top of the next column
    - Before the second town (Dystopia Village, forcing that town to the top of the next column)
    - After both (forcing whatever town/county is next to goto the top of the next column)
So basically, I need to find a way PREVENT column breaks where they should not occur. Inserting column breaks is one thing (I know how to do that). Prevention is the issue though that confounds me.
Does anyone have any thoughts of how to achieve such a thing? I know there are "non-breaking space" characters ... is there, or could there be, some kind of a "non-breaking return" character? Or would it be more feasible to test for the paragraph style at the bottoms of columns and insert column breaks in once it finds an appropriate match?
Am I going about this all wrong?
Again, any help or suggestions are more than welcome.
    Thanks much.
    ~Nate
    FYI .. using InDesign cs5.5

I am now wondering about a possible solution. It would be one hell of a challenge for me to figure out how to code it, but I at least need to figure out the theory first, then I'll try to figure out how to code it.
Again, the issue at hand is preventing column breaks for the "listing" style in the following example. Please note, the number of "listing" lines varies. If the following two entries (in a long list of similar entries) were to be near the end of a column, I'm trying to cause the flow of text to break only before a county style, or a town style (if it's not the first town in the county).  Basically, no breaks in the middle of listings.
    Countyland <styled "county">
    Utopiatown <styled "town">
    46 Appletree Lane ...... $500,000  <styled "listing">
Sold by: Some Guy   <styled "listing">
Bought by: Other Guy  <styled "listing">

Naomi previously suggested messing with the "keep options" in the styles. This will solve the issue of preventing breaks before listing details start. But it won't help in keeping listing details from breaking, since the number of lines can vary.
I'm now thinking ... might it be possible to have a script search all copy, looking for the last line of listings, and then apply a second listing style with a different keep option setting? The "normal listing" style would "keep next 1 line". The "last listing" style would not, therefore, allowing a break.
Here's a map of what I'm thinking: (bear with me on the terrible syntax, this is just for illustrative purposes)
listingNormal has keep with next 1 line applied
listingBreak does not keep with next line
    if currentLineStyle == listingNormal
    AND
    style of next line != listingNormal {
    currentLineStyle = listingBreak
Does this make sense? If so, does this sound feasible?
    Thanks any and all.

  • Inserting paragraph rules into a nested style.

Is it possible to create a style which includes a paragraph rule which can be used in a nested style. Character styles do not seem to allow rules, and nested styles seem to use character styles only when they are being built.
The nested style is removing the paragraph rule at the mo and im struggling to see how to make it work.
    Using InDesign 5.5

    OK.
The example has been built in InDesign 5.5. We are building an excel data sheet which will be data merged. As i need it to all follow the same style I have given all the elements within the example a style. The blue rule can't be done as a character style so ive had to do it as a paragraph style. When i open up the nested styles pallette to set up how I want it to behave I cant include the paragraph rule. (indesign wont allow me) The rest is working fine as they are character styles.
Basicly what im trying to do is reproduce the style in the example with an image on the left, Title in blue bar at the top and the part number, description and price.
I figured a nested style would be the way forward but I cant get the blue bar (Paragraph Rule to display from the nested style)
I should point out that I rarely need to use nested styles so im sort of bashing about a bit to figure it out.
    Thanks

  • Is there a Master or Paragraph rule that would allow me to edit fonts on many pages?

    I'm using InDesign CS4.
I would like to be able to create a header on a Master that would control the font and size of font on each Header on each page.
On each page, the wording is different, so there can't be wording...
The Headings on each page have a different font than the font in the body of the book.
Is creating a master the best way, or is creating a type of paragraph or paragraph rule the way to go?
I feel there must be a way to make this happen - so if the font needs to be changed, it can be changed from a master or a rule, not having to go to each and every page...
    Thanks for your help, Lou

    What did I do?
    Not sure.
    What do I do?
If you still don't have it sorted out, here are some steps to follow, with some assumptions based on info contained in the thread so far:
Go to your Master Page and set up your header text frame. Type an actual line of text in there, even if it's just "Header goes here" or something like that.
Format the text the way you want all your headers to look; font, size, etc.
With the now-formatted text selected, go to the Paragraph Styles panel, (if you don't see it, choose Window > Styles > Paragraph Styles or press Ctrl+F11), and choose New Paragraph Style from the panel menu, (click the menu icon at the top-right corner of the panel to access the panel menu). This will open the Paragraph Style dialog, pre-populated with settings based on your text selection. Give it a name like "Header Left," put a tick on Apply Style to Selection and click OK.
If you need a Header Right style for the facing Master Page, there are a few ways to get it. Here's one: In the Paragraph Styles panel, right-click on the Header Right style and choose Duplicate Style... to make a copy of it. Now right-click on the new copy and choose Edit Header Right copy... Change its name to Header Left, make whatever other changes you want to the style settings, (primarily Indents and Spacing > Alignment, I should think), and click OK.
Now you can also duplicate the text frame you made in step 1 by copy/paste or Alt-Drag to the facing page. Put it where you want it and apply the Header Left style.

  • Paragraph Rules Run Too Short Under Text

I've noticed that when I select a paragraph rule to run under some text (instead of the whole column) that it runs a little too short if the text has been tracked. If there's no kerning or tracking, the rule runs the width of the text just fine. But soon as the text is stretched out the rule doesn't quite extend the entire way under the text. Is there a way to fix this? I have InDesign CS5 for Windows (ver. 7.0.4).
    Ed Hedemann

    @ Lilia,
Forced line breaks are special characters, too.
But here's the good news. I tested your theory this morning about not applying the tracking to the last character and it DOES work for all alignment options, and it does not move the last character's position, so it is viable, in fact excellent, when applied using the GREP style. So for headings (or any other tracked paragarph that needs a Rule Below set to text width and where the text is tracked with a positive value) you want to create a 0 tracking character style and apply it to the last character inthe paragraph using .$
The tracking value should be added to the basic character format of the paragraph style:
The character style should do nothing but assign a tracking value of 0:
And that character style should be applied as a GREP Style like this:
No special characters and comletely automatic, and the text can be edited at will, or the formatting in the style can be changed and it will continue to work.
    Well done.
By the way, welcome to the forum. If you want to learn about GREP, and you should, both as a teacher and an obviously talented user, I highly recommend Peter Kahrel's primer from O'Reilly: http://shop.oreilly.com/product/9780596156015.do which is a real bargain at $9.99 and available as PDF, Mobi or ePub. GREP is incredibly powerful, and actually not terribly difficult to learn (and the Find/Change dialog in ID has most of the commonly used metacharacters in the dropdowns if you have trouble memorizing). There are many users here who will be glad to help you learn GREP, including Peter K, if you run into a stumbling block and post a question.
I'm also going to update my bug report from last night to include your workaround. It might point the engineers toward an easy way to fix the code so none of this will be necessary someday.

  • Possible to Have ToC Default to Show Only Top Level (collapse sublevels)?

    Howdy!
I'll bet I'm not the only one wishing for this.  Let's say you're using Captivate 4's Table of Contents feature with a longish movie of Cp slides, which is chunked into bite-size sections content-wise.  In the ToC, though, you can't mimic that same organization scheme; at least, the learner would first need to collapse all the ToC folders you've created so they see only the top-level listing.
This can be a critical issue:  keeping the at-first-glance list in the ToC brief enough to be inviting to learners, yet allowing learners to drive which details are currently visible.
A movie's topical hierarchy could be along these lines, for example ...
    Section 1 - National Brands
    What are National Brands?
Why Are They Important to Our Business?
    Working with Nat. Brands
    Practice Your Knowledge
    Section 2 - International Brands
    What are International Brands?
Why Are They Important to Our Business?
    Working with Intl. Brands
    Practice Your Knowledge
You'd like to organize the ToC to show only the section titles (1st level) and to suppress the 2nd-level detail (slide titles) until the learner chooses to expand the folder to see those details.
I've tried things like grouping the slides into sections in the Storyboard view and organizing the slides into sections strictly within the ToC -- both to no avail.
Has anyone solved for this need yet?
I'm all ears, and you'd be doing learners of the world a huge favor.
    Thanks!

Thanks for being 'on the case' and looking into this so quickly.  Your

Since the only thing I may influence is getting  IT to help push out FP10,
    I'm hoping it's more of a player- than a browser-version issue.
I'll test things out by Monday and let you know the results.  Wish me luck!

I just tested this on my local web server and it worked fine.  I created a
blank project with 8 slides.  Created my TOC with grouping... 2 slides in

  • On some pages the text from more than one paragraph stack up on top of each other, like writing something then writing something else on top of it.

On some pages the text from more than one paragraph stack up on top of each other, like writing something then writing something else over the top of it. Some pages will run text and pictures together, like a car rear-ending another or a train pile up. Other pages will cut an image or text short, i.e. it will display a portion of the top of the image or text but not the rest. This happens on Amazon for example, the section where it says "Customers who looked at this also looked at" will allow only a certain amount of the upper portion of the description immediately below the picture of the product but below that section everything is fine until I get to another section displaying more products and their descriptions and then it cuts the bottom portions off again. I've noticed this behavior mostly in the sections with product photos, the text sections seem okay. YouTube also displays this behavior. It's even doing it on this page right now. Below this box I can read "The more information you can provide the better chance your question will be answered " , but directly below that in the next sentence I can see the start of it with "Troublshootin" and the "Automatically Add" in a green field covering the "g". The next clear text is "A window will open in the top corner. Click Allow, and then click Install. If the automated way doesn't work, try these manual steps." I tried turning of pre-fetching, clearing history, cookies, and cache, scanning for malware with Avast and Windows Defender all to no avail. It began when I upgraded from dial up to DSL via AT&T Uverse. I have a Motorola NVG510 modem. The modem was replaced an hour ago along with new dedicated lines and DSL/Phone splitter from the box by an AT&T technician to make sure my incoming lines were up to par. He ran a connection test and verified everything is up to standards. IE does not display this behavior. I am running Firefox20.0.1 and all previous versions have acted the same way since I upgraded to DSL about 3 months ago.

If you have increased the minimum font size then try the default setting "none" in case the current setting is causing problems.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced > Minimum Font Size (none)
Make sure that you allow websites to choose their fonts.
*Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"
It is better not to increase the minimum font size, but use an extension to set the default page zoom to prevent issues with text not being displayed properly.
You can use an extension to set a default font size and page zoom on web pages.
    *Default FullZoom Level: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/default-fullzoom-level/
    *NoSquint: https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/nosquint/

  • ALV report shows fixed number of columns for a user ?

    Hello,
I have an issue wherein I have created an ABAP ALV grid display in a WD ABAP application and hosted it onto portal. Now, all the users can see the correct number of columns for the report which are determined dynamically. But just for one user, irrespective of which report she launches it shows her only 4 columns.
Can anybody suggest why this kind of behavior.
    Appreciate your help.
    Regards,
    Samta.

    Hi,
Right, click the button "manage layout" or "save layout" and remove any default user settings...
added: didn't read carefully sorry ;)... better check user settings in SU01 if no ALV parameter is used.

  • Is there a way to default the monthly calendar display so that the current day always shows on top?

Is there a way to default the monthly calendar display
so that the current day always shows on top? ie, I want to always be able to see what's in the future 3-4 weeks, not what's in the past 3-4 weeks. The default monthly display is archaic--only allows you to see through the last day of the month. Suddenly today
is Oct. 30th, and I have a ton of projects lined up in November, but because I haven't been scrolling down every day, I haven't been aware of them every day. I realize there are other tools in Microsoft to help me stay on task, such as reminders and such,
but it would be helpful if I could always have the current day display on top of the monthly view so I can quickly scan what's coming up in the next few weeks.

    Thank you!
Right, I already have it in Month view. My question is a little more specific--I'd like for the current day to always display at the top. For example, today is Oct. 31st, so the current day is at the bottom of the calendar since it is the last day of the month.
I can view everything in October that I've already completed. What I can't see are the future weeks because we haven't hit November yet. I'd like for the current day to always display at the top of my calendar so I can always see what's coming in the following
three - four weeks (whether they're a part of that month or not). I've been to other forums trying to find the answer, and have come across the same exact question from frustrated users--but there seemed to be no solution. So I'm posing the question myself
in this forum. Do you know if this is possible? What I found from other forums is that Outlook defaults to a physical 'desk' type calendar format--so just as I'd use a paper calendar at my desk, I wouldn't be able to see the following weeks unless I either
flip the page to that month or I come to the first day of the next month, thereby tearing the the old month off and now only able to see the current month. That format is just so...paper...and archaic! Essentially I want the calendars to loop so it doesn't
even really matter what month it is--I just always want to see what lies ahead without having to scroll down. With our being in the Technology Age, I'd assume this is a logical expectation, but we may be stuck with the replica version of the paper-desk-calendar
format until Outlook programmers add this Technology Age feature in newer versions.
See, this month kind of messed me up because I have so many projects for November that start tomorrow and next week, but I haven't seen them until this week. I would have been better quipped--at least expecting them--had I been able to see all of those projects
since last week or the week prior.
If there is no solution to this answer, would you know how I can contact Outlook to provide feedback? I'm guessing a newer version is on its way...
    Thanks again in advance!
