Parallel's Virtual PC Performance?

anyone know if there is a major slowdown in speed when using virtual pc?
i'm doing some 3d/ rendering and would like to use the virtualpc instead of bootcamp cause of faster switching between the os'es. but i'm wondering if the speed is good enough doing it in virtualpc..

Expanding on what Kappy said, Virtual PC is very, very unlikely to give you the performance necessary to effetively run any 3D app, particularly in rendering. If you have a PowerPC-based Mac, you really should stay with native Mac applications.
If you have an Intel-based Mac, you could use Parallels Workstation, but since it's sharing the processor with Mac OS X, it won't give top performance. For intensive graphics work and particularly rendering, you need all the performance you can get, which means BootCamp so that you can run your Windows apps natively. So if you must use a Windows 3D/rendering package and have an Intel Mac, BootCamp and rebooting would be my recommendation.

    I have MBP mid 2010, 15" maverick 10.9.4  and it freezes with any virtualization software. I tried Parallels and Virtualbox. both freezes.. I did go through forums and disable automatic graphics switching, reset PRAM and SMC, reinstalled OS/X no luck. Virtualbox 4.3.14 seems not freezing much as compare to parallels but virtual box has no drag drop support and its painful without that. parallels has good features but it freezes my computer. I tried their support, they helped me twice to remote control my computer but so far no help. No real good person was there to fix. just check some setting etc...

    Just to add when MacBook Pro freezes graphics screen acts weird and below task bar isn't rendered properly, mouse moves keyboard light also works but clicking anywhere yields nothing. tried with command-option-shift-esc, command-option-esc, command-q nothing works, sometime (once in a blue moon) above keys work and system regains after a while but i am so far not able to use any virtualization software, gave enough 4 GB 2 CPUs to virtualization software(s), yes i tried running both separately means when virtual box is running parallels is not even there on my box and vice-versa... no luck sofar. please help.  my notebook is out of warranty and I don't think apple will even take a look.
    What could be wrong here?

    Dave: I did the Microsoft Update two days before this happened, and rebooted as required.  I just created a new restore point and lauched Creative Cloud.  Now I get the famous white screen:
    It just sits and spins (been 10 minutes now). 
    Fortunately, I saved away this command (which I've had to use 4 or 5 times already):
    del %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local\Adobe\OOBE\opm.db
    Unfortunately now, I get this (even after closing the above window):
    The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process.
    So I killed everything that said "Adobe" in the task manager and this time, the command succeeded.
    Fortunately, the current apps seem to still work.  I can't seem to find the "Creative Cloud" app in the applications on my system, but I launched Photoshop CC, told it to look for updates, and got a list of the 5 prgorams that need updates in the Adobe Application manager:
    I will proceed with the updates, holding my breath.

    Hello Team,
    I'm very new to VCOps and VROps
    I have a question regarding Virtual machine performance, Request you to answer please !
    Question :  While checking Virtual Machine performance , what VM resource of sub factors( CPU,Memory and Disk) do I need to check ?? as I found lot of sub categories Inside  of each VM resources and I selected few categories , (like workload and cpu usage and DIsk IO etc.. ) and I found spike  of  the resources, but still could not able to come to one final conclusion and  not sure to give correct advise to the requester on particular things, please help me on this .  How to deal this kind of situations , please explain ....

  • USB Medical Device not recognized by iMac or Windows through Parallels 7 Virtual Machine

    I have a USB Medical device which initially i was using through a Windows based Laptop, I want to connect it to my iMac to use it through Parallels on Windows 7. The device is not recognized by my iMac therefore it is not recognized by the virtual machine. It does not show in the Universal Usb devices or else. It is a Windows USB Device.

    Thanks for the reply. I was able to get the WD hard drive back up and running using the Disk Utilities application. I tried to fix it using the diagnose / repair option but that failed so I had to reformat and partition it. Now it works great but I lost all the data that was on it. I still don't know what caused the problem and hope it doesn't happen again.

  • Parallels Question/Virtual Box

    Hello-
    Not to sure where to place this question in the forums, but I was wondering if anyone has used Parallels as well as virtual box so they could say which one is better. I have a PC program I want to run on my Macbook Pro, witch is Proshow Producer a honken slideshow program for PC and far superior to Imovie.
    I found out that virtual box is free, but wasn't sure if it will be up for the task. In fact, I don't know if Parallels will be up for the task either.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    It depends mostly on how much RAM you have and what you will run in those virtual machines. And also how much you can tolerate strain/lag. 4GB of RAM is the minimum you should have, I think. I have a 2008 Mac Pro with 6GB of RAM, and it can run simultaneously VMWare Fusion (which is slower than Parallels) with Windows 7 and VirtualBox with Debian or Windows XP without noticeable strain.
    I don't know about Parallels 9, but Mavericks would most likely make it slower.

    hi BWer,
    it depends on the 'logic' in virtual chars exit, may have performance issue e.g if you select/populate from
    table, but may not if only filled with other characteristic value or only simple logic.
    the 'how to' doc sample from sap market place have no performance issue.

    My department is running some own coded solutions, based in C sharp and MySQL, runing on a Windows XP computer. We will have budget for a high spec server and we thought in a Mac Pro, having all the current solutions running on a Windows virtual computer. The big concern is the performance, because it would difficult to explain having a ultra fast computer and worst performance than with the old machine. Any advice?

    You were using XP, that can't have had much strain on any hardware you were using.
    Apple does not support native support on the newest nMP Late 2013 of anything pre-8.1/8.0.
    People run Mavericks natively under Mavericks - depends on how many cores you have, how many are to be allocated but a 6-core nMP would not break a sweat.
    3D and games are never good candidates for VMs. But web server type tasks?

    I'm considering buying OSX Server to use as a virtual machine for testing purposes -- so I can run two different OSX versions at the same time on the same computer. Some questions for anyone who's done this:
    1. Is it working flawlessly (Parallels Desktop, VMWare Fusion)
    2. Is it officially supported by Apple or only tolerated currently
    3. If this works technically on a Mac, I'm wondering what Apple is doing to block it from working in VMWare on a PC
    4. Will this be forwards compatible:
      A. will I be able to run my Leopard Server VM on my current (Leopard-era) Mac once I upgrade that to Snow Leopard (this is my main point currently)
      B. will I be able to run my Leopard Server VM on some new Mac I buy 3 years from now that may have something different in its firmware -- it certainly wouldn't support Leopard for a native install (this gets back to the OSX Server VM on PC question; I'm concerned about Apple needing to "support" the VM on my hardware for it to work)
    5. Is Leopard the first OSX Server that can be virtualized (without hacking)
    6. In general is OSX Leopard Server "the same" OS as the normal Leopard version, configured with some admin-friendly features, or distinct enough it wouldn't be fully reliable for testing purposes?

    There's a slew of technologies at work to ensure that Mac OS X runs on Apple hardware only. That's a whole different discussion. Suffice to say that it doesn't work.

    Sure. Of course, this may require an update from the VM vendor to run under Snow Leopard, but you won't know that until closer to Snow Leopard's release.

    Hahahaha. No one is going to guarantee you three years of future compatibility on anything you buy today.

    There are some underlying tweaks around things like network management (servers tend to have different networking needs from clients), and several extra processes that aren't in Mac OS X (client), but the underlying code base is the same. As to whether it's 'reliable for testing purposes', that depends on what it is you're testing

  • Virtual machine performance degradation

    The performance of my Virtual Machine seems to degrade overnight.
    After installation, I connect to the Administration Services Console and whenever I click on a menu item, the response is very fast.
    I switch the virtual machine off, and the next day, it runs very slowly. I have to wait a long time to open the Administration Services Console, and when I click on a menu item, I have to wait a long time for a response.
    This keep getting worse, until I have to reinstall the virtual machine, and it is all over again.
    I wonder if it all has something to do with the way I switch off the virtual machine. Should I save the state, turn it off or shutdown the guest operating system? I do not need to save the state of the virtual machine, or go back to a particular point in time of the virtual machine.
    Has anyone come across this problem yet?

    I have a cloud service in our lab environment. In that , i have one virtual machine and one web role. When i access that Virtual machine from azure console, i would see the dashboard and monitor tab. In that page, when i access that monitor tab , have measures

    1) where or which location these data's are stored. How these data's are displayed in graph..

    The data is stored in an Counter (Internal Data Base Table). The display works very similarly to what you would see on a OS resource monitor.
    The data is refreshed every 5 min hence you might have noticed a lag.

  • 250 GB MBP HD full up with no user documents (75 GB "backups")! Parallels, Virtual Box or Mavericks?

    hi all,
    i have a mid-2009 MBP and have moved ALL my user documents to my Mac Pro because the Hard Drive seems like it is full up. TechToolsPro keeps giving me a less than 15% available hard drive error. i am running Parallels with an install of Windows 7 and i recently downloaded Virtual Box to text it out. i have BOTH these softwares on my Mac Pro.
    i am trying to run WhatSize and OmniDiskSweeper to figure out what is going on but i am seeing 75 GB of "Backups" for starters on the MBP and i am only seeing 0KB of backups on the Mac Pro.
    since i have both Parallels and Virtual Box installed on the Mac Pro and since i only USE the Parallels on the Mac Pro (and only rarely use the Parallels on the MBP) i am at a total loss as to whether this is a Mavericks issue or a Parallels issue or a Virtual Box issue. i have tried to uninstall VB but so far i am not having any luck in getting this done.
    anyone have any ideas?

    That's odd. One of the things TTP6 does when you install it is it self installs a preference pane. Though I don't know what you mean by a pulldown item.
    When you open the System Preferences, there should be an icon for TechTool, like the one at the lower right shown here:
    Click on that to bring up its feature settings. The second tab is the one that devours your disk space.
    Uncheck all of the drives shown and then turn it off by clicking the radio button.
    if i got into the Application Support directory in Library (i hold down the Option Key if i recall correctly to see this item listed in the Go pulldown in Finder)
    Wrong Library folder. Holding down the Option key leads you to the one in your user account. You want the main Library folder at the root of the drive. It's the one shown next to Applications, System, Users, etc.

    Virtual PC for Mac will only work for the older PowerPC Macs.
    For the newer Intel Macs look at either Boot Camp from Apple <http://www.apple.com/bootcamp> or Parallels <http://www.parallels.com>. The performance of Windows with either of these solutions far outweighs Virtual PC.
