Parsing the \n (carriage returns)

From a postgres DB i get several Strings, in one field i have several carriage returns (\n).
Is is if put the Strins into a variable (String) how can i parse for change the \n characters with the <br> string?
Thanks

you can create the stringbuffer object like.
StringBuffer sb = new StringBuffer(yourString);
then find the '\n' and replace it with the string you want. check detail in javadoc

  • Carriage Returns / Line Breaks & PDF

I have a requirement to display a customers address in 1 column of a PDF report.
The address is stored in the RPD as Address1, Address2, etc. etc.
I use the answer of the question "Carriage Returns / Line Breaks" as a basic startup.
    ( Question Registered the 02/24/10 from user12673225 )
I get a great result in the HTML report.
But, when I print the report in PDF the HTML control codes appear in the PDF report.
    e.g.
    LTHEA A | P.O. BOX 877 *<br* | KY | VERNON A 100000479 |
    VERNON | /> GRAND...........|....|.............................|

Presently I generate the report in HTML then I convert it in PDF format.
Is there a way to print the report directly in PDF without the html control appearing in clear in the pdf file. Is is possible to do the job in one step only?

    Hi Will,
The [   instead of   <  does not work.
The character "[" is not recognized as an HTLM control code.
    It worth the try.

  • Carriage Returns, Line Feeds, and Tabs in Text Area

I am having users copy and paste data from an Excel spreadsheet into a textarea on a BSP page.  When they submit this, since there are tabs and line feeds in the data, the BSP does not recognize the data.  The value in the field comes through as blank. When I manually type something into this field, with out any carriage returns, tabs, etc., the value does not come through as blank?  Does anybody know how to get around this?

    HI
Iam uploading the data from application server(AL11) to other server.
In the GLPCA-SGTXT(Table) iam having some text like 'This is good ##'.i was downloded some other data with this text('This is good ##') by using report program in to aplicationserver(AL11) and from there iam uploading that data into other server.
But here the problem is in the UNIX, it was showing some problem.
That is actually it need to show the format like:
    001 256 786 This is good## 459786
But here it was showing like:
    001 256 786 This is good^M
    459786
So here '459786' is coming to next line. But i need this '459786' also in the same line.
I am not sure if it is possible to remove CR and LF's using the code the program is written in, but that is what we need to do.   In Unix  ^M is the CR (Carriage return), but I am not sure what LF is?

  • Importing XML Text files with Indesign friendly 'Carriage Returns'

    Hi,
I have a question wrt importing XML into Indesign.  I have my text stored in Excel (Fig A) and intend to export as an XML file where each line will represent each page.  However, my first attempt failed to treat the 'carriage returns' as I'd envisaged:
The 'carriage returns' used within an Excel cell (ALT-ENTER) are maintained when transforming to a CSV file (Fig B).  However, when converting to an XML file, the conversion only takes place on a line by line basis and hence the XML file becomes incomplete (Fig C).
So, it appears I need to make sure that the CSV file contains one line per entry, while also maintaining the actual carriage returns in my source spreadsheet and for Indesign to recognise them.  In order to do this, I'll need to substitute the 'carriage returns' in my excel column to be represented by a new set of characters.  My question is how can I let Indesign know to recognise this set of characters to be converted to a carriage return, when importing text.
For example, if this set of characters was '%%%%%%', then my new csv file would look like Figure D and the XML would be produced correctly, like Figure E.  Then importing this XML file to InDesign, the carriage returns would automatically be reinstated, hopefully.
I hope someone can help me as I am only starting out in Indesign and feel Im running before I can walk by venturing into the XML/Indesign arena too soon.
    Best Regards
    Luke

    Hi,
    Thanks for all the responses.
With regard to XML, it could well be an issue has crept in because I am using another utility to convert my csv's to xml and maybe there are better options out there. I will take a look for other utilities and try that (Its not possible from Excel easily, even though there is an option to save as an XML file).
Secondly, because the XML was readable by internet explorer, I assumed it had a satisfactory standard XML format which would be accepted by any program, including InDesign.  This proved true, since the XML file i generated was actually recognised by my Indesign document and populated the tags correctly, albeit without any carriage returns.
When I save my excel sheet as a csv, it does actually hold the carriage returns causing multiple lines per entry, hence why I need to substitute the actual carriage returns in my excel sheet to a alternative character set so that the entry remains on one line.
Re: Double quotes on text fields.  Im sorry, I didnt realise I had commas in my sample csv example.
I should have corrected it, but I intend on using semi-colons as my csv delimiter and don't intend on having semi-colons in my excel sheet itself, so I possibly won't need any double-quotes.
    So, it looks like this is what I need to do ;
    i)   Add a column in Excel which substitutes all the carriage returns with a line break identifier (^n).
ii)  Convert Excel file to a semi-colon csv holding this new column,
iii) Convert csv file to XML using a good CSV->XML utility,
iv)  Add the respective XML tags to my INDD document,
    v)   Add a GREP rule which does a find/replace on all instances of ^n and replace with a line break,
    vi)  Import the XML file,
vii) Apply the find/replace GREP rule on the whole document. Carriage returns on my text fields should be consistent with my original excel sheet.
Thanks for all your help fellas.  Will report on how I get on once Im done.

  • UTL_FILE.FCLOSE carriage return

    Hi folks,
I've noticed that UTL_FILE.FCLOSE includes a carriage return. I'm trying to write a procedure that does NOT have a final carriage return in it (i.e., that the last line of the output file has text on it), and the carriage return is added, even when I use UTL_FILE.PUT(v_output, 'My text'), rather than UTL_FILE.PUT_LINE(v_output, 'My text').
Apart from manually removing the last carriage return after the file is created, is there a way around this?
    Thanks,

Because I could paste returns into the Spotlight comment window, I figured there was a way to place carriage returns into the window [without copying a return from TextEdit].

The email is formatted poorly by the sender.
The screen width for a PC is min 640x480, which is large enough to display the email with the extar carriage returns on every line.
The  Blackberry has a much smaller resolution, even with smaller text (which you could try but I wouldn't count on).
The BB removes extra CR/LF's (ie if you have three or four per line, it will only show one), but it isnt going to reformat the entire email.
Especially since the email is generally formatted for a reason.
The sender has not formatted the email (thatws an auto-reply email, right?) for small screens or mobile devices.
If you open the email in outlook and then reduce the window size to 1/4 or smaller than you will see the exact same thing on the Outlook email...
So, there is nothing you can do on the BB. Its the sender who needs to change their emails.

  • Extra carriage returns in footnotes of exported RTF

All documents containing footnotes in Indesign are exported with extra hard returns after each footnote when exporting to Word .rtf.
I am using Indesign CS5 but this has always been the case since earlier versions of Indesign.
Does anyone know a way to avoid this or of a way to fix it afterwards in Word. Search end replace for double paragraph marks in Word doesn't seem to be working in footnotes.

  • Can I preserve carriage returns in a string variable from SQL Server?

I have an OLE data source that pulls data from sql server via a SELECT query.  One of the fields is an NVARCHAR(max) which goes into a string variable which is later used in an expression.  I am noticing that in the expression, carriage returns
/ line breaks in this field are being lost.  Does anyone know how I can preserve these in the expression?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions.  I am certain there are both \r and \n in the database as when I print the field and then copy/paste to textedit to show the hidden characters, I can see both the CR and LF's.
I have implemented a workaround that is by no means elegant, but it gets the job done.
I found that \r and \n will evaluate in an expression but if they are part of another string variable, SSIS escapes them. My workaround was to change my OLE_DB select statement (which fetches the custom SQL query) to explicitly change the hidden characters
    to '\r' and '\n' respectively:
    SELECT REPLACE(REPLACE([CUSTOM_SQL],char(13),'\r'),char(10),'\n')
Then, in my SSIS expression, I de-escaped these characters:
    REPLACE(REPLACE(@[User::vAlertCustomSQL],"\\r","\r"),"\\n","\n")
Now when the expression is executed, the SQL is formatted correctly and oddly placed comments in the query no longer break the query.

  • Parsing a csv file with carriage return replaced with #

    Hi,
We have a weird problem. We are able to download a csv file using standard FM HTTP_GET. We want to parse the file and upload the data into our SAP CRM system. However, the file downloaded, has the carriage return replaced and the character # replaces it and everything seems like its one line.
I understand that the system replaces the Carriage return with the charater #. My question is, if I try to pass this file into my program to parse for the data, will there be any issues in the system recognizing that "#" that it is a carriage return and that the data in the file is not 1 record but multiple records?

    Hi
'#' is what you see in the SAP. But the actuall ascii associated will be of carraige return itself. So to identify if you have multiple records of not don't use hard coded '#' but instead use the constant CL_ABAP_CHAR_UTILITIES=>CR_LF.

  • On Windows 8.1 and Firefox 36.0.1 the textarea in forms has no carriage returns. Earlier versions the forms work. Is there a fix for this?

Prior to this version of Firefox 36.0.1, the <textarea> in my HTML forms was working; displaying carriage returns. In version 36.0.1 they no longer function properly. Instead when I enter a carriage return, it displays a space instead of a newline. I went to the most basic textarea testing
    &lt;textarea&gt; name="comments" cols=20 rows=10 &lt;/textarea&gt;
to make sure I wasn't introducing anything with other languages.
I am using Windows 8.1 Pro. I rolled back to Firefox 35.0 and everything works fine. I install 36.0.1 and it stops working.
I have access to another Laptop also running the same version of windows and Firefox and it appears to be doing strange things as well. I am suspicious in that I started noticing this immediately after a windows upgrade last night. The laptop also experienced the issues it is having immediately after a windows update yesterday evening.
I have yet another PC running a different version of windows and Firefox and it too works fine. It looks like the issue is where there is windows 8.1 Pro and Firefox 36.0.1.
Do you guys have any idea what is going on here?
    Thanks

The current release supports the white-space property for a text area and it is possible that the website uses white-space: pre instead of white-space: pre-wrap.
The former will prevent Firefox from wrapping the text.
You can check that in the Inspector via the right-click context menu.

  • My test instrument is outputting a 5 line string but labview only read until the carriage return. how can I get it to read the whole string?

I have a labview sub-VI reading the string being outputted by a pH meter.  The meter outputs a 5 line string and labview is only reading up to each lines carriage return, there-by giving me 5 separate strings is there anyway to rectify this and have the 5 line read as one string?

    Labview 2010

Yes, LabVIEW will automatically update. What happens is that the old serial functions still exist in 7.1 and above but the code (the block diagram) has been modified to use VISA functions. Older versions of LabVIEW are fully supported in this manner. The only way you can avoid the automatic update is to have the old serial functions in an llb and your top level VI refer to these. Having any VI that was part of vi.lib in an llb is a very bad idea and the way to fix things is to remove any VIs in the llb that are part of the LabVIEW distribution.
I don't remember how the old serial config worked and what the new version does with the VISA Configure Serial Port. Your program should only have a single serial config and you might just be able to directly replace that with the VISA configure Serial Port.

  • How can labview update the string control (text-edit box) after we have pressed the carriage return key on the keyboard during text-editing within that box?

    Dear readers,
I have been trying to work out how to get labview to detect the event when a 'string' control has been modified, where the user has finished editing the string either by 1) pressing the enter key on the keyboard, or by 2) taking the focus away from the string control again. For example.. if I use the mouse to click on the string control and then I type 1234 into the box, I would like to have a routine that does something once the user hits the Enter key of the keyboard, or when the user takes the focus away from the string control again by clicking on something else. I would like the routine to respond even when the user didn't change anything in the text box (such as when we mouse-click on the edit box to go into edit mode, and then mouse-click on something else to remove the focus with no changes to the contents in edit-box).
The purpose of my routine is to have a edit-box for a user to change for example the centre-frequency of a vector network analyser, so that the centre-frequency of the network analyser can change once the user finishes entering a new value in the text-edit box by hitting Enter key after the number is keyed in. Even if the user has clicked on the edit box, but changes their mind by mouse-clicking on something else to remove focus from the edit box, I would still like labview to detect the event when the control loses focus, so that the centre frequency can be updated anyway (to the same value that was already in the edit box).
So far, I've tried set the string control option to 'limit to single line', so that I can try to scan for a carriage return .. '\n' ... pattern in the string. Unfortunately this doesn't work because labview doesn't seem to attach the '\n' to the end of that single line.
Could someone please suggest ways to set a flag when a user hits Enter during text-edit mode of a string control, or when focus has been removed from the string control?
While I've only described my problem for controlling a single control parameter on the gpib device, I'd like to make this feature work so that I can do the same kind of thing with other control parameters as well.
    Thanks so much in advance.
    Kenny

    Hi Kenny,
instead of using the event structure, you can directly achieve to what you want by the KeyFocus property of the string control.
    - Enable Limit to single line option
    - Create the property KeyFocus in read mode and connect an indicator
Each time you click on the string to modify it KeyFocus is True; when you click away or hit Enter KeyFocus is False.
You can toggle your settings when KeyFocus changes from True to False.

  • How do I add a carriage return to the output ?

I have a listBox with 15 values. That list box is connected to a textBox. The text box prints only the selected items from the listBox (thanks try67 for the help getting that set up). Now what I would like to do is have each of the items that are selected to appear seperately in lieu of having one lone continuous line. I think what I need to do is add a carriage returne (or two) between each item selected. Here is the code I have for custom calculation script
    var v = this.getField("DiagnosisList").value;
    if (typeof v=="string") event.value = v;
    else event.value = v.join(", ");
I triend adding  /r/n   but I keep geting syntax error. Thanks for any assistane.

I appreciate you assistance, but this is not going to work. The narrative on the listBox for each item is so large, that it either gets chopped off or if I set the text size to auto it is too small. Is there a way to display the list items in a format that 'wraps'? If not then I will neet to set it up with check boxes now, but here is how the format should work:
    () item one
    () item two
    () item three
then allow certain ones to be checked,
    (x) itme one
    () item two
    (x) item three
and based on the ones checked, those are the only ones that print
    Item one.
    Item two.

  • Cd() prints a carriage return to the screen

In writing scripts, I've noticed that the cd() method echoes an extra carriage
return to the terminal. Due to the fact that set() is context-specific (can't
say cmo.set(); must say set() instead), long scripts have a lot of calls to cd(),

    Justin,
