Partition by Date and PK

I am designing a new laboratory database.
My primary data tables will have at least <tt>id (PK NUMBER)</tt> and <tt>created_on (DATE)</tt>. Also, for any two entries, the entry with a higher <tt>id</tt> will have a later <tt>created_on</tt> date.
I plan to partition by <tt>created_on</tt> to increase performance on recently entered data. Since the columns increase together, the table would also be partitioned by <tt>id</tt>, implicitly. However, Oracle would not know about the implied partitioning by <tt>id</tt> to take advantage of the partitioning of table joins on <tt>id</tt>.
Two questions:
1. How do I enforce both columns increasing together?
2. How can I take advantage of this implicit partitioning for table joins?

1. How do I enforce both columns increasing together? With a trigger on insert?
2. How can I take advantage of this implicit partitioning for table joins? Not to worry, PK will allways be GLOBAL index, and fall (when seqential read) into correct partition of date(created_on) performance-wise.
All other indexes you create LOCAL.
:p

As stated above. I get this when I try to resize my HD. Was having issues with BootCamp so I removed it and got this.

  • Why is the hard disk split into two data partitions (C:Vista and E:Data)?

I've just switched on a new A200-1V0 and found that the disk space is split into two equal sized partitions "C:Vista" and "E:Data" (and a small EISA one).
WHY? What is the logic and purpose? It's not even as if the the C:Vista partition is smaller and intended solely for "system" stuff as the the "Users" (User Documents) root is on it too.
Is this the default for Vista (my first use of it), if not, who said Toshiba could do this without asking me?
How do I move the "Users" root in Vista (to the Data partition) - if I've got two partitions I might as well use it?
Can I resize partitions in Vista without a 3rd-party utility (or a complete backup/restore)?
    Thanks

    Hello Just YOU
Please do not be upset because there is no reason for that. You have bought new product with factory settings. Toshiba and any other hardware manufacturer do not know each customer personally and, unfortunately, it was not possible to ask YOU how to configure YOUR notebook.
Because of that there is Product Recovery media that allows you to configure HDD according to your wishes and needs.
Please use this DVD and install OS how you want to have it. When recovery procedure starts you will see SETUP option on the right side. Click on it and choose the right option.
Install OS again and enjoy your life. I really do not have time to write about vantages of two partitions because it is basic stuff and you probably do not want to loose your time reading this.
    Bye and good luck!

I want to find the all the records whose mail date(earliest of all with no reply) and no response date and find the earlier one with reponse date and display it as a one row.
    For example
mail_Date+45 mail_Date in table    earliest date of reponse
    BEGIN_DATE   DEL_DATES           END_DATE                 TRACKING_ID
    17-SEP-04    03-AUG-04 06-          MAR-07                                2257
Other date and their response date should be shown same way

  • Partitions for Mac and PC

I have a G4 PowerBook running 10.5.8 and also have a Windows laptop. I have an external hard drive that I would like to use for both the Mac and the PC.
I have split the external drive into 3 partitions. One for my Mac clone, one for Time Machine and one to back up the PC. The problem is that when I set the Format type to Apple Partition Map, it applies it to all 3 partitions and I can't partition the third partition to FAT. When I plug the disk into the Windows PC, the computer recognized the hardware but I cannot see the partition in Windows Explorer.
If I start off my making all three partitions FAT and then reformat the 2 Mac partitions to OX S Extended Journaled, I get a message from Carbon Copy Cloner that the disk will not be bootable because a Power PC need Apple Partition Map.
Isn't the whole point of making separate partitions that they can be different formats and be used on different machines/platforms?
I suspect I am missing something simple here as there must be a way to do this.
    Anny advice would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    David

I have a G5 and can't run Snow Leopard. I just rebooted into Tiger, and Disk Utility there offered an additional volume format option called "Unix File System" for all three partition schemes, which I did not see in Leopard. However "MS-DOS File System" was still only offered for MBR and GUID and not for APM.
It would be interesting to know if Windows can actually read the FAT32 volume that Snow Leopard creates on an APM drive. I just found this:
[FAT32 External HDD formated with Mac OS not mountable on a Windows machine|http://superuser.com/questions/49068/fat32-external-hdd-formated-with-mac-os-not -mountable-on-a-windows-machine]
I just cleared the data on one of my externals and tried formatting it in various ways from my snow leopard machine. first I partitioned it APM with two partitions: one HFS and one FAT. then I rebooted into windows. Windows did not see either of the partitions. then I booted back into snow leopard and reformatted it using APM. then I booted into windows and it saw both partitions (I have snow leopard drivers installed in bootcamp so it can read HFS+). so there may be something to that link. the method in baltwo's link might be your best option.

  • Is there a way of partitioning the data in the cubes

    Hello BPC Experts,
we are currently running an Appset with 4 Applciations. Anyway two of these are getting really big.
In BPC for MS there is a way to partitioning the data as I saw in the How tos.
In NW Versions the BPC queries the Multiprovider. Is there a way to split the underlying Basis Cube to several (split by time or Legal Entity).
I think this would help to increase the speed a lot as data could be read in parallel.
    Help is very much appreciated.

    Hi Daniel,
The short answer to your question is that, no, there is not a way to manually partition the infocubes at the BW level. The longer answer comes in several parts:
    1. BW automatically partitions the underlying database tables for BPC cubes based on request ID, depending on the BW setting for the cube and the underlying database.
    2. BW InfoCubes are very different from MS SQL server cubes (ROLAP approach in BW vs. MOLAP approach usually used in Analysis Services cubes). This results in BW cubes being a lot smaller, reads and writes being highly parallel, and no need for a large rollup operation if the underlying data changes. In other words, you probably wouldn't gain much from semantic partitioning of the BW cubes underlying BPC, except possibly in query performance, and only then if you have very high data volumes (>100 million records).
    3. BWA is an option for very large cubes. It is expensive, but if you are talking 100s of millions of records you should probably consider it. It uses a completely different data model than ROLAP or MOLAP and it is highly partition-able, though this is transparent to the BW administrator.
    4. In some circumstances it is useful to partition BW cubes. In the BW world, this is usually called "semantic partitioning". For example, you might want to partition cubes by company, time, or category. In BW this is currently supported through manually creating several basic cubes under a multiprovider. In BPC, this approach is not supported. It is highly recommended to not change the BPC-generated Infocubes or Queries in any way.
    5. If you have determined that you really need to semantically partition to manage data volumes in BPC, the current best way is probably to have multiple BPC applications with identical dimensions. In other words, partition in the application layer instead of in the data layer.
    Hopefully that's helpful to you.

  • Year to Date and Monthly totals

I know that this is rather simplistic, but I'm new to Discoverer and need to set up a bunch of sales reports with MTD and YTD columns. I'm going to be using the same SQL query for many of my reports but customizing the reports to show sales by state, product line, etc.
Is there a formula/function I can use in Discover for the Month to Date and Year to Date totals?
    Thanks,
    Joseph

    Hi Joseph
You can use the analytic range SUM calculation for these. For the month to date, use the a PARTITION BY of month with a range of all the preceding rows in the partition up to and including the current row. For the year, you would simply change the PARTITION BY to be the year.
Here are some examples drawn from my own database:
    I have the following items:
    ORDER_YEAR
    ORDER_MONTH
    ORDER_DATE
    SELLING_PRICE
With these defined, the formula for month to date is:
SUM(Sales.Selling Price SUM) OVER (PARTITION BY ORDER_MONTH ORDER BY ORDER_DATE ASC ROWS UNBOUNDED PRECEDING)
The formlua for year to date is:
SUM(Selling Price SUM) OVER(PARTITION BY ORDER_YEAR  ORDER BY  ORDER_DATE ASC  ROWS  UNBOUNDED PRECEDING )
Basically what we are doing is telling Discoverer to SUM the SELLING_PRICE, and you should be able to take these and adjust them for your own report.
Let me take a look at the month to end and describe what is going on. Basically the PARTITION BY is defining a set of rows which are to be included. In this case it is all rows that have the same ORDER_MONTH. The ORDER BY clause tells Discoverer to place the items in order, with the oldest order first. The ROWS UNBOUNDED PRECEDING tells Discoverer to SUM all of the items within the set (within the PARTITION BY) from the oldest item (UNBOUNDED PRECEDING) to and including the current item. We could have added a BETWEEN clause too but that is implied. With a BETWEEN clause it would look like this:
SUM(Sales.Selling Price SUM) OVER (PARTITION BY ORDER_MONTH ORDER BY ORDER_DATE ASC ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW)
If you want the current row to be included with UNBOUNDED PRECEDING you don't need to explicitly name it because that is the default. Other options you could use are these:
UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING - this SUMS to the end of the PARTITION
ROWS BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND UNBOUNDED FOLLOWING - you can guess that this will add all of the items, which you will rarely use because if you omit the ROWS command then this range between first and last is actually the default
Rather than ROWS BETWEEN you can also say RANGE BETWEEN, like this:
SUM(Sales.Selling Price SUM) OVER (PARTITION BY ORDER_MONTH ORDER BY ORDER_DATE ASC RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW)
I hope this little dissertation on running totals helps.
    Best wishes
    Michael

yes, i have tried that option as well.
but when i write one tablespace name in REMAP_TABLESPACE clause, it gives error for second one.. n if i include 1st and 2nd tablespace it will give error for 3rd one..
one option, what i know write all tablespace name in REMAP_TABLESPACE, but that too lengthy process..is there any other way possible????
    Regards
UmeshAFAIK the option you have is what i recommend you ... through it is lengthy :-(
Wait for some EXPERT and GURU's review on this issue .........
    Good luck ....

  • Zero Out All Data and GUID

I'm just formatting a second hard drive for backup purposes. I've decided I want to zero out all data to ensure that the drive maps out bad blocks, and then I'm going to create a GUID partition just in case I decide to make it a boot drive in future.
    Three questions:
Why doesn't Disk Utility give you the option of Zero Out All Data and GUID partition as a 'one stop shop'?
Is there any disadvantage to having a GUID partition on a backup drive?
Are any remapped bad blocks found during the zeroing process retained after the GUID partition erase?

Zeroing and GUID don't always go together. AIUI, GUID is only compulsory for a boot partition for Intel Macs; and it is recommended for volumes used by Time Machine. Otherwise, Apple Partition Map will usually be required since it can be read by both Intel and PowerPC Macs.
The disadvantage to having a GUID partition is that it won't be readable by PowerPC Macs.

You need something stronger, such as DiskWarrior, TechTools Pro, or Data Rescue.

I am trying to check the last date (i.e. max date) and also check the penultimate date (i.e. the second to the last date).  And then find the difference between the two (i.e. last date minus penultimate
    date).
I would like to do that for each of the companies listed in Table 2: Tickers.  I am able to do it for just one company (MSFT) using the queries below:
    SELECT
    [First] = MIN(ExDate),
    [Last] = MAX(ExDate),
    [Diff] = DATEDIFF(DAY, MIN(ExDate), MAX(ExDate))
    FROM (
    SELECT TOP 2 Dividends.ExDate
    FROM Dividends, Tickers
    WHERE Dividends.symId=Tickers.symId
    AND Tickers.Symbol='MSFT'
    ORDER BY ExDate DESC
    ) AS X
    Outputs the following result:
    First
    Last
    Diff
    2012-11-13
    2013-02-19
    98
But what I would like instead is to be able to output something like this:
    Symbol
    First
    Last
    Diff
    MSFT
    2012-11-13
    2013-02-19
    98
    AAN
    2012-11-13
    2012-12-14
    1
    X
    2012-11-13
    2012-12-14
    1
Can anyone please let me know what do I need to add on my query in order to achieve the desired output?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Partition Pruning - Dimension and FACT tables..

    Hi
I have a DWH environment where we have partitioned the FACT table by a date column. This is RANGE partition. The TIME dimension table joins to the FACT table based on this date. However the end user queries will typically be fired using a different column in the time dimension that will hold more VIEWABLE date values (e.g.) in format MON-YYYY or YYYY-MM etc..
The query is autogenerated by the viewer tool. The SQL has something like
    select sum(balance), MONTH from fact a, dim_time b
where a.date = b.date and <-- this the partitioned key in fact
    b.month_year_col = 'Apr-2006' <-- Dimension filter.
In the above case, Oracle is not doing PARTITION PRUNING. I have 24 period data and in the explain plan i can see it goes to the entire 24 periods. However if i change the query to
    select sum(balance), MONTH from fact a, dim_time b
where a.date = b.date and <-- this the partitioned key in fact
    b.date = '31-Apr-2006' <-- Dimension filter.
it does partition pruning. The explain plan shows that i goes to only one partition.
Any help on this please. I would need the first query to use PARTITION PRUNING.
    Thanks
    bala

    Hi All
Got it to work with these 3 parameters
alter system set "_subquery_pruning_enabled" = true
    alter session set "_subquery_pruning_cost_factor"=1;
    alter session set "_subquery_pruning_reduction"=100;
Thanks for all those who had a look into my question.
    Regards

  • How to use a 2nd partition for data storage?

The 40 GB hard disk on my satellite L10 was delivered with two 20 GB partitions (drive C and D). I now understand (by reading this forum) that it is preferred to use one partition for data storage.
Until now there was no need to use the D-drive. But by now I need the extra space.
How can I use the folders structure in windows XP home (My Documents etc) and put the data on the D-drive.
We work on this computer with several accounts.
I tried to move one folder out of My Documents to the D-drive, but then it can be reached by the other users. Should I use shortcuts towards the D-drive? I hope there is a simple solution.
    Thanks in advance.
(I tried my best to write this in English....)

    Hi
I didnt tried it before but you can try to make your personal folder on D partition. The notebook administrator should set the security settings that can be found under folder properties. Go to Security tab and check all permissions for other users. Choose Deny option for all of them.
I believe that on this way you can use your data folder alone and be sure that other users can not read or execute any of your private data.
Please let me know if it works properly.
    Bye

  • Removing data and passwords

I have MacBookPro from 2008.  I am running Lion 10.7.5 on the system.  There is a startup disk application in my utilities.  I also have a VMWare partition with Window (dont scream).  I want to barter this system with someone so I need to remove all the data and passwords ont the system, also the account and the iTunes/iCloud links under my user name.  But, I do not want to lose all the applications that are installed on the system.  Can anyone suggest a proven method for doing this.  Thanks all.

Proven at what level? DoD? detach HD, shredder it, set new HD, reinstall
    smart human? reformat, reinstall.
mere mortal? set new account, remove old account. But problems will arise here and there
