Passing a large 3D-array to a sub vi and back causes huge loss of performance

I am passing a large 3D-Array of type I16 to a sub-vi node of same type, and back to the main VI. For test purposes I have removed all processing in between. Still, the sub-vi call requires many ms to s, depending on array size. I was under the impression that variables are passed to sub-VIs by reference. Is this incorrect? can it be fixed?

Hi Johannes,
(There may be exceptions but) No, variables are not passed and returned by reference.
"A fix" may be possible by restructuring your app such that the large 3d array never gets moved around. This can be done by using what I call an action engine. It uses a variation of the LV2 global to store the large array ONE TIME in a shift register. After that, all other operations are performed "in-place".
This technique has allowed me to process very large data sets "on-the-fly".

Using JNI to pass an array of Strings to C and back from C

I have some C code that I want to integrate with a new Java application and I need to be able to pass an array of strings to the C program and then the C program needs to be able to build an array of strings that is passed back to the Java program. I've got the first part working so that I can pass an array of strings to the C program and display them, but I can't figure out how to build the strings in C so that that when Java gets back control, it can display the strings tha were built in the C program.
Has anyone done this? Do you have some sample code?

Is there a way to type cast an array of strings to numbers and back again?

I'm working on an application where I want to type cast a string like "power supply" into an array of existing numbers. Then sort the existing numbers, and finally convert the casted numbers back into a string so it can be read by the user. In the attachment, you can see my latest attempt with flatten/unflatten data and the 'convert string to byte array'. I can't seem to make this work. Any ideas?

Can I move web developer tools out of the sub-menu and back into 'tools'?

I'm sure there are many who like this new sub menu for web developer, but for me it's a waste of time. Is there an option to allow me to move the contents of "Tools->Web developer" back into tools? It would save me time and, I might actually start liking a firefox vision other than 3.6.. Thanks

The extension's UI doesn't let you dive into submenus, but you can "hack" the extension's RDF data file. For example, to move the Web Console to the bottom of the Tools menu, you can insert a new <NC> item for it, e.g., as the first <NC> item in the file menuedit.rdf:

[Bug?] X-Control Memory Leak with Large Data Array

I have found that if I pass a large data array (~4MB in this example) into an X-Control, it causes massive memory allocations (1 GB+).
Is this a known issue?
The X-Control in the video was created, then the Data.ctl was changed to 2D Array - it has not been edited in any other way.
I also compare the allocations to that of a native 2D Array (which is only ~4MB).
Note: I jiggled the Windows Task Manager about so that JING would update correctly, its a bit slow, but it essentially just keeps rolling up and doesn't stop.

You probably found some information from the forum. The US engineer has gotten back and he said that unfortunately that's expected behaviour after they have conducted some tests and this is what he replied:
"X Controls in the background use events structures. In particular the Data Change Event is called when the value of the XControl changes (writing to the terminal, local variable, or value change property). What is happening in this case is the XControl is getting called to fast with a large set of data that the event structure is queuing the events and data that a memory leak is produced. It is, unfortunately, expect behavior. The main work around for the customer in this case is not call the XControl as often. Another possibility is to use the Synchronous Display Property to defer updates to the Xcontrol, this might slow down a leak."
He would also like to know if you can provide with more details how you are using the Xcontrol, perhaps there is a better way. Please refer to the link below for synchronous display. Thank you.

In my application I updated the X-Control @ 1Hz and it allocated at MBs/s up to 1+GB before it crashed, all within a few hours. That is why I called it a leak. I am really worried that if this CAR gets killed, there will still be an issue lingering that makes using X-Controls a major problem under the above conditions. I have had to pull two sets of libraries from my code because of this - when they got replaced with native LabVIEW controls the leak when away (but I lost reuse and encapsulation etc...).
Anyways, I really want to use X-Control tho (now and in the future) as I like all other aspect of them. If you do not consider this a leak, can a different #CAR be raised that may modify the existing behavior? I offer the suggestion (in the cross-post) that the data be ignored rather than queued? Similar to Christian's idea, but for X-Controls. Maybe as an option?

InsufficientMemoryException while sending large byte array in WCF Service callback

I have a datacontract with a large byte array that is passed by the WCF Service back to the client using a callback contract.
Until the byte array size remains below 25-30 MB, it is passed OK, but as soon as it exceeds that, an InsufficientMemoryException is thrown on the service side. I have set the max message sizes at 100 MB and using MTOM Encoder.
I am using WSDualHTTPBinding with sessions and message security - hence streaming is not an option. I know chunking channels are an option, but I want to try to tune the service and client to maximize the byte array size which can be sent over a normal channel.
Kindly advise how to tune settings to get to around 100 MB byte array size.
Binding section of web.config is given below. Same settings for sizes are used on client.

First please try to increase the timeout value in the both client and service side to see if it works:

Then since you do not want to the use the Chunking option to help you, maybe you try to change the wsDualHttpBinding to use the binding which supports the streaming mode and supports callback.
In streaming transfer mode, the receiver can begin to process the message before it is completely delivered. And the streaming mode is useful when the information that is passed is lengthy and can be processed serially. Streaming mode is also useful when the
message is too large to be entirely buffered. So it will be better for you to use the streamed mode.

Need to send and receive larger byte array

I have a small WCF service, self hosted in a console app. On the same computer I have a client application. Both are running in the debugger in VS2008. The proxy code and the config file were generatred from the running service using svcutil.
In one of the service calls, the service reads a pdf file and sends the contents as a byte array. The client receives the byte array, saves it as a pdf file, and displays it.
Everything is fine for all other kinds of calls, and this one works fine also as long as the file is small (say 14K). But if the file is larger (say 84K), the client crashes (VHOST has stopped working).
Is there some kind of setting that will allow me to send and receive larger byte arrays (> 100 K)?

You'll want something like this to increase the message size quotas:

The justification for the values is simple, they are sufficiently large to accommodate most messages. You can tune that number to fit your needs. The low default value is basically there to prevent DOS type attacks. Making it 20000000 would allow for a distributed
DOS attack to be effective, the default size of 64k would require a very large number of clients to overpower most servers these days.
If you're still getting this error message while using the WCF Test Client, it's because the client has a separate MaxBufferSize setting.
To correct the issue:
Right-Click on the Config File node at the bottom of the tree
Select Edit with SvcConfigEditor
A list of editable settings will appear, including MaxBufferSize.
Note: Auto-generated proxy clients also set MaxBufferSize to 65536 by default.

Large string array in 6.1 is extremely slow

Good day all,
While this is in to tech support at NI, I wanted to see if anyone else has encountered it.
I am upgrading from 6.0.2 to 6.1. Several large (2500 rows by 250 columns or larger) string arrays are used as inputs into subvi's. Under 6.0.2, these functions run in tenths of seconds, while under the converted 6.1 vi's they run in 20 seconds or more!
Tracing back using probes, the problem is occurring at the point of the input. It is appears that the array is taking many seconds to copy from the input to the wire on the diagram.
Array controls generated in 6.1 (not converted from 6.0.2) seem to function just fine. Using a save with options... to convert back to 6.0.2, the vi's again function in tenths of
seconds.
Anyone have any ideas?

I hear what you're saying about legacy code...
Something you might want to be looking at for the future is migrating to a structure where the data is stored in a 1D array, where each element is a cluster contain the data that's now in a single row. This would be the most straight-forward change, but could make getting at the data tricky, depending on how you need to be able to search it.
Alternately, you could have a cluster containing arrays of each of the row values.In this structure element 0 of all the arrays is the first "row", element 1 of the arrays is the second "row" and so on. This structure at first blush looks more complicated, but it's really not, plus it would allow you to use any value (or combination of
values) to search for a specific row without a lot of parsing.
If the data that is in the example VIs you posted is typical, either of these changes would be advantagous because it looks like there is a lot of reptative data that might be able to be encoded in an enum. Plus storing numbers as numbers often reduces the memory required and produces a predictable memory footprint (an I32 will always take-up 4 bytes per value regardless of how large of small the number is). My sense is that the variability of the string size is what's killing you.
One thing that would make this sort of dramatic change somewhat easier is that because you are changing the basic datatype of the interface, you aren't going to have to worry about finding all the places the change will effect--the wires will be broken.

I ran into your code and looked into it. You've used the Person object array and directly passing it to the oracle.sql.ARRAY constructor. Just curios if this works, cos my understanding is that you need to create a oracle.sql.STRUCT out of ur java object collection and pass it to the ARRAY constructor. How do I pass a 1D LabView array as a pointer to an array in a C DLL?

I am trying to pass a 1D Labview array of DOUBLE to a C DLL which is expecting a pointer to an array of DOUBLE. I have read that LabView stores arrays as a pointer to a pointer and that the first element of a LabView array is actually the size of the array. So I think my question is then how do I dereference the first pointer and pass in a pointer which points to the second element in the array?
Any thoughts out there?

Passing a cluster with array to a dll

I'll trying to call GetVersionEX Function from kernel32.dll. (trying to determien OS version)

I am using the Call Library Function Node in Labview with a parameter defined as Type-> Adapt to Type, and Data Format->Handles by Value. (please correct me if this is incorrect).
I'm trying to define the OSVERSIONINFOEX structure as a cluster but I'm having trouble on how to define the fixed array szCSDVersion[128] so that it is not a pointer. I've tried it as a byte array initialied to 128 elements and string with 128 dummy chars but both end up being pointers.
Attached is my cluster (which doesn't work).
Any help would be greatly appreciated in defining this cluster and ultimately calling the dll function to get the OS version info.

I'm a beginner and have major problems to make a sub vi and call it from main vi. I'm going to do a save dialog where is extra info for my saving and want to call dialog from main vi and after that save info to a file or database. I want that save dialog appears after i press button. I attach sub vi where is no functionality yet.

The first step is to connect the controls and indicators that you want to pass information to and from your main vi.
You right-click on the icon at the top right corner of the Front Panel and select "Show Connector". Typically put inputs at the left and outputs at the right side of the connector pane. Save it.
Open the main vi. Go to the block diagram. Click on "Select a vi" inside the Functions Palette. And choose the sub vi you prepared. Then wire it up inside your main vi.

In my opinion this can be acheived in two ways:
1. Using ALV GRID DISPLAY
2. Using AT NEW , ON CHANGE OF , etc events.
1. In the ALV field catalogue u create entries for all the fileds to b
displayed in the output list.
Here, we need to put DO_SUM = 'X' .
eg
****************fieldcatalog*********************
data:anytab type slis_t_fieldcat_alv with header line.
**************pgm name**********************
data:anypgnm type sy-repid.
**************events*************************
anytab-fieldname   = 'MATNR'.
anytab-seltext_m   = 'Material Number'.
anytab-col_pos     = 0.
anytab-outputlen   = 20.
anytab-emphasize   = 'X'.
anytab-do_sum = 'X' .                  <----
here it is.
append anytab to anytab .
clear anytab .
Now wen u call the fm REUSE_ALV_GRID_DISPLAY , plz pass anytab ie fieldcatalog and the tabel with records to b displayed .
this would sum the fields at the end.
2. Alternately ....for SUb-totals ;
   Sort itab in an ascending manner.
Data : wa_itab    like line of itab,
          wa_subtotal type i.
" fieldname1 in itab is the key field
" fieldname2 is the value field
LOOP at itab into wa_itab .
wa_subtotal = wa-subtotal + itab-<fieldname2>.
AT END OF <fieldname1> .
      " your programming logic for subtotal
       Write :/ wa_itab-fieldname1 , wa_subtotal.
       Clear wa_subtotal.
   ENDAT.
   " write :/ ....if u need to write any lofgic values ....
ENDLOOP .
Note : plz sc if a field in itab that is left of fieldname1 changes
          the AT END OF event is triggered.
         Therefoe , see that pur key fields towards left in itab.
FYI : u can try ON CHANGE OF....ENDON....
                      AT NEW .....ENDAT
                       AT LAST....ENDAT
                       AT FIRST ......ENDAT events for ur own understanding
