Password Hex Equivalent

Does anyone know how to find the hex equivalent password in the case where you don't really have an AX or AEBS as the main base station? I am simply sharing my DSL Internet to other computers through my iMac's Airport card and DSL modem. Works fabulous, but I can't use the Airport Admin Utility to determine the hex equivalent for my password.
Is there any alternate method of getting the hex equivalent password from my Airport?
Thank you.

Though this will only work if the plain text password is 13 characters long for 128bit WEP and 5 characters for 64bit WEP.
If the password is either longer or shorter than an algorithm is used to create the 26 character HEX 128bit key 10 character HEX 64bit key
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.
The problem is that different vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be hashed differently on a Netgear client and vice versa.
One thing is a 13 character 128 bit WEP password will be hashed by all vendors in the same way (if you use 40bit WEP then a 5 character password is required).
Though sometimes not even that works and the HEX key must be used regardless.

I assume this is a follow-up to [your other thread|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=716799&tstart=0].
If you go to the [Unicode code converter tool|http://rishida.net/scripts/uniview/conversion.php] that I linked to in that thread, you can copy and paste an arbitrary string and convert that to (among other things) its Unicode hex representation.

  • Not able to connect to wireless network using WEP 128 bit hex password

I'm using a 128 bit hex WEP password on a Belkin wireless router.
My ascii passphrase is 13 characters.
I tried using the hex password generated by the Belkin router, as well as the hex equivalent of my ascii passphrase. Every time, I am told that either "there was an error connecting to the network" or the "password is incorrect" message.
I'm using channel 7, but have also tried with channel 11.
I tried using a $ sign in front of the WEP hex password. The $ does not work with Open Internet Connect or the Airport menubar.
I can connect if I don't use any encryption on the wireless network, and also through the Ethernet cable.
I have an iBook which connects fine to the wireless network.
So why doesn't the iMac work the same way ?

The security difference between NO encryption and any form of WEP is about 2 minutes or less for somebody looking to get in... besides having WEP enabled makes you look like an easy target since you think it'll stop anything!
Either leave it off, making Hackers think at least 3 minutes about WHY, or use/setup WPA of one form or another!

  • AE will not accept my password

I put a password on my network using my powerbook because that is what I change settings on but then I updated some ports for forwarding and now I cannot connect to my network at all.
it worked fine until then.......I used an 8 letter/number password with WEP......I know its correct password because it worked for the night I did it. Now it says "The password you entered is not correct for the Airport Network"......I don't know what else to try.
Before I updated base station I copied down a hex numberf in the settings that said HEX equivalent key (WEP key)... but that number won't work either with or without $ symbol.
How can I get my password now?

I ended up resetting base station but now it says unsecured & keeps reminding me that password is set to "public"......
I'm afraid to change it & get locked out again.
Its hard wired to my desktop WinXP but thats not where AEBS control is.

  • WEP Password works on all Wireless Mac computers except Intel

O.K. So I am not a network wonk but hear me out. I am using an SMC wireless router which works fine and I have it connected to my G4 Cube for the past 3 years via ethernet. I also have a G3 Pismo and G4 Titanium powerbooks with airport cards that see the router just fine anywhere in the house. So I got an Intel iMac and it sees the airport network fine EXcept it will not recognize the WEP password (hex numbers 10 to be exact) as valid. If I go into the routers browser and disable the WEP than the iMac hooks up fine. Problem is I need to protect the network from my neighbors. Any ideas what is up here.. Thanks

A number of users in various discussion threads have complained about connection problems that started when they upgraded to OS 10.4.10. I have seen at least one concerning the upgrade from 10.4.10 to 10.4.11. The most common problem seems to be dropped connections, as opposed to unrecognized passwords, but these problems could be related.
My own experience with a MacBook originally running 10.4.10, subsequently upgraded to 10.4.11, is that it suffers more connection difficulties than older 10.3 Macs. It initially would not connect to my network when I entered the password--I had to go through the process mentioned above whereby I added it to a fresh "Preferred networks" list. Since then, I have not received an error message at the password stage, although the connection is sometimes irregular, especially when the computer is in the same room as the base station, which I attribute to wireless interference. I imagine that if interference is causing packets to be dropped in your case, it could produce an error at the WEP password authentication stage or slowness using WPA. You might try testing the computer in another location.
Another option to try, in case your preference file is corrupted, would be to move the file
"com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" to the desktop from Macintosh HD > Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration, then shut down. Upon restart, the system will create a new preference file that might be cleaner.

  • Is the data sent to COM Hex string?

First.I don't know who should change the data to ASCII,me or COM ?
Second,I want to know if the data sent to COM is only Hex string?

In Labview, the data sent to the com port is usually a string that is sent to the com port as the hex equivalent. If you want to send hex, use the \ codes for stings while displaying the string in slash codes format. The only thing being sent to the com port is hex.
The data received on the com port is usually hex that is interpreted into ascii by LabVIEW. Sometimes the sender of the com data formats the information in another way. The programmer will have to convert data (which looks like gibberish in a string) into the proper format.

  • How to Connect a NINTENDO DS to an Airport Express

    Okay,
I put together all the information from Apple's site and this site but one bit of information I found out myself.
    1. Finding directions for your specific Router
    Go to this link
    http://www.nintendowifi.com/consumerservice/routerSetup.do
    2. Select Apple, Then Airport Express
    3. Read Directions, the reason why your DS won't log on with your password is because you are using a "paraphrase" Password. What Apple does is takes this simple "Paraphrase" or "Word" that you use and uses an algorithm to turn your "paraphrase" into a proper 10 digit or so, password. Apple does this because they know it's easier for the average user to remember words than random 10 digit numbers.
Unfortunately, the DS wants the proper 10 digit or so HEX password, not your paraphrase.
Nintendo recommends using a Phone number for a password giving you a 10-Digit password.
Unfortunately, I did that and the password still didn't work. When I changed it I input it as the password on the DS and the DS actually made it appear to have worked, but when I tested the connection, I received an error code. Which means this must not be a proper HEX code.
    4. Finding out your proper Hex Code. Go to Airport Admin Utilities Found under APPLICATIONS-->Utilities or do a search for it in Spotlight if you have OS X 10.4.
THIS IS THE STEP NO ONE TALKS ABOUT.....
    5. Retrieve Your Proper Hex Password. Click on the "Password" Icon at the top which looks like a Padlock. Clicking that will show you a message that says, "To Connect to the Airport Network created by this base station from a computer not using Airport Software, you should use the following: Hex equivalent password (WEP Key):(your key will show up here)"
    6. Type that into your DS and your set.

  • How to enter a WEP key

I'm trying to join an existing wireless network of Windows machines. Connecting to the ZyXEL router software shows that it is using 64 bit WEP for its password and this is of the form 64 6F xx xx etc. However, entering this in the Airport configuration for the Mac does not allow me to connect. I've tried putting $ or & in front of the password to no effect. How do I enter this on the Mac?
The Mac offers me 40 bit or 128 bit but not 64 bit. Is this relevant?
Alternatively, if can I just change the router password to alphanumeric e.g. macfan?

I've turned on 64 bit WEP on the router and entered a five letter password. I'm allowing broadcast of SSID while trying to fix this and the Mac can see the network but asking to join and selecting either just WEP Password or WEP 40 bit ASCII and entering the same five letter password, it fails to join and gives the error message invalid password.
    Bummer!
an exact 5 ASCII character password should have worked for a WEP 40/64 bit key. But if it didn't, then it didn't.
The router should be able to tell you the WEP Hex Equivalent Password. It should looks something like 1A2B3C4D5E (this is just a made up example, you must get the real hex value from your router). You enter this as the password.
NOTE: Apple has played games with entering hex passwords over the years, and I DO NOT know the current rules, so I'm going to suggest you try 3 different ways to enter this hex value. One of them should work, or there is something else wrong.
    $1A2B3C4D5E
    0x1A2B3C4D5E
    1A2B3C4D5E
One of these mentions of entering the WEP Hex Equivalent Password should work (I'm placing my bets on the leading dollar sign).

  • Can't Connect via XP

I've just installed my new Airport Extreme N base station and updated both the software and firmware for the unit. I have a sold green light on the front of it, so it appears everything was updated properly.
I connect my Mac (this computer) via ethernet to the base station, and it all works. However, I can't seem to connect my Windows XP (SP2) computer, located in a different room, wirelessly. This computer connected fine to my old Linksys router (with no security settings enabled).
I was trying to configure my wireless network with maximum security to prevent anyone else from connecting to it.
I have it set up to use WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security.
On the Windows XP computer, I use a Linksys Wireless G USB adaptor (WUSB54Gv2). Using the Linksys setup utility (visible in the task bar), I created a New Profile and entered in my security settings. It can see the Airport Extreme basestation, and says it's connected to it. However, it can't connect to the Internet.
Short of disabling all security on my new Airport Extreme (and throwing out a main reason for getting it), what can I do to get my Windows XP computer to access the internet?

Well, I guess the hex equivalent question is a moot point now, as I've got the network running securely via WPA2 now.
To do so, though, I purchased and installed a new wireless adapter for my Windows XP computer. I bought a Netgear WN121T Wireless-N USB adapter.
At first, I had the same problem I had with my Linksys wireless G USB adapter...it could connect to the Airport Extreme, but not to the internet. I tried the hex equivalent thing by entering it in the password box, but got nothing.
Then...I checked Netgear's web site and found a newer software installation version, Version 5. Configuring everything thru Netgear's Wizard (including entering the password into the WPA2 box) worked like a charm this time.
My connection speed is a much-improved (but still not ideal) 130Mbps (compared to the 54Mbps I was able to get with my wireless G adapter). I'm guessing this is because the adapter doesn't operate in the 5GHz range...only 2.4GHz.
At any rate, my connection is now faster than before....and secure.

  • Windows 2000 laptop can connect to unsecured Apple network, but not w/WEP

I have a PC laptop running Windows 2000 with a Linksys WPC54GS wireless network adapter. I am running two Apple Expresses as one network. This is a healthy network and most everything I need to do works.
However, I can't connect to this network unless I turn off security entirely. Well, to be exact, I know it doesn't work (yet) with 128-bit WEP, and I haven't tried the 40-bit WEP (and don't especially want to). I tried switching to a 13-character password and getting the hex equivalent of it for use as the password on the laptop, but still no joy. The Linksys application on the PC lets you generate 4 different keys from a text password. I tried that too and tried all 4 different keys, and that doesn't work either.
    Any ideas?

One of the problems with WEP is that the actual standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier for people, vendors use certain algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords (or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling people to use simple memorable WEP password rather than lengthy HEX keys.

Only Windows XP has native support for wireless networking.
Other versions of Windows do not have native support for wireless networking.
What this means is that, unlike Windows XP, you can not plug in a wireless adapter and expect Windows to recognise it and start working.
You will need to install some kind of software configuration utility that came with the adapter. Each manufacturer has their own software so as a result the process of using these utilities to connect a Windows (non-XP) computer to an Airport wireless network will be different and so no generic guide is available.

  • Sharing Internet with a windows laptop via ethernet on airport express base

    Hi
I have a Linksys wireless router which is connected to my G5 Imac, I also have an airport express base station. My wife's laptop does not have a wireless card. Can I plug an ethernet cable into the Airport Express base station and get the laptop connected. What is the best way to configure all this. Help will be much appreciated.
    K.

you have 2 choices. Actually three but i would use choice 1.
    1. Set-up the Airport station using DHCP to assign addresses dynamically to connected (or wireless users). The computers must be set to DHCP.
    2. Set-up using Manual IP assignment.....uhm you have to do it manually. Your laptops must be manually assigned IP address via thier network control panels.
    3. The linksys router should do all of the above, but using the Apple software to do the above is easier using set-up assistant.
IMPORTANT: Make sure you do not have both wireless devices trying to do the same thing at the same time!!
One must be set-up as a dumb router/hub.(see your instructions)
    Hope that helps.
Once you are set-up, In order for a PC to sign in, on the Apple base station you have to click on "Password" in the Airport software and have it reveal the "HEX equivalent password (WEP key)" for PC. Your wife would enter this in her PC connection gui.
    Hope this helps

  • I want pdf to open in form view not this icon..see image

I have just completed my first form with Acrobat 9
    when the link is selected
    http://www.financialcounsellors.org/HUGS Application_Form_to_FCAWA_3_pages.pdf
A small image appears (see image) that must be clicked before the form is visible. How can I get the link to open in full view as per the link below on the "Forms'link on menu bar.Re 2 page view.
PS cant send image ..just noticed there is no facility for it. Oops try this http://www.financialcounsellors.org/Hugs1.jpg

I simply clicked on your link and that is what your server told me. It may be that the folder is password protected or something similar.
Here is the error I get:
    "Forbidden
You don't have permission to access /HUGS Application_Form_to_FCAWA_3_pages.pdf on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
    Apache/1.3.37 Server at www.financialcounsellors.org Port 80"
Also, using a space in the URL does not follow proper naming (it is a feature of IE and is not standard). You should replace it with %20. Many browsers will convert it to %20 (even IE did that) that is the HEX equivalent of a space.
Basically you have loaded it someplace that we (or at least I) do not have permission to access.

  • Adding Airport Express to an existing Windows WEP enabled wireless network

I have can't find anything to help me add my new Airport Express to my existing WEP network. All I want is to use to play my Itunes through the sitting room stereo. I've upgraded the firmware on my Netgear 802.11b wireless access point so I can have a 13 digit WEP password. I've installed the latest install software from the apple website for the express box.
I can access the express box fine on its own but not add it to the existing network. Now the only thing that works is the apple connection! My old wireless network has stopped working. I tried the same at my office yesterday and the only way to resolve the situation was to uninstall all the Apple software and then my Wireless network was able to work again. I'm pulling my hair out here and getting in to trouble with the rest of the family because it is taking so much time up!
Someone mentioned somewhere some new firmware - I can only find one for MAcs not PCs - I don't have any Macs on my network.
    Please help.
    THANKS

Make sure you have installed at least Airport 4.1 on your PC:
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport41forwindows.html
Most Netgear wireless routes will tell you the hex equivalent of the plain text WEP password you enter into it - and this is found using the same web browser based process you use to configure the router. This information cannot be found by any other means (like "pinging" the router's IP address). If you can get the WEP key in this manner, configure the Airport Express with the same WEP key *while it is still cabled to the router*.
The alternative is to come up with a 26-digit hex format WEP key of your own choosing. You can then wirelessly access the Airport Express and enter that WEP key on it first, followed by doing the same on the router second.

    Somebody can help me?
    Thank you in advance.

    Hi,
I'll try to guide you through this though I'm not sure of all the words in English...Well you see, I had just the same problem as you and tried about evertyhing. And I hopes someone would give you tje answer but they didn't so I almost gave up when I suddenly solved the problem.
What you do is this. Step by step. (On your mac-computer.) (Question-mark (?) means I'm not sure what the term is in Englis but I try to translate it word by word from Swedish)
    1. Open your "Finder"
    2. Click on "Programs"
    3. Open the map called "tool-programs?"
    4. Open the "Airport administration tools?" (It has the symbol of a roundshaped airport.)
    5. Click on Setup. (In the upper left corner there are four different buttons. The third says Setup)
    6. Enter the password for your basestation
    7. Click on Password (the fourth button in the upper left corner with a lock as a symbol)
    8. There you will have a HEX equivalent password (WEP-key) which you need for your PC.
Then you just type in this password on your PC-computer and you will soon be able to use the internet via your airport and the airtunes as well.
    Good luck!
    /Emanuel

  • WPA2 and Hexadecimal keys

I'm not sure if I'm missing something, but here it goes...
In Airport Admin Utility running under OSX 10.4.X, the WPA/WPA2 key could be either an 8-63 character ASCII password or a password of exactly 64 hexadecimal characters. You had to explicitly switch between ASCII (password) and Hexadecimal (passphase).
In the new Airport Utility running under Leopard, it seems like you can only enter 8-63 ASCII password. When I open my AEBS with Airport Utility, the "Wireless Password" field is empty and I can only enter in up to 63 characters. Help also says to use an 8-63 ASCII password.
What am I missing? Did they change it so you have to use a max of 63 characters?
    Thanks!

After much research, I think I have an answer. Airport Utility in Leopard only lets you enter an 8-63 ASCII password. You must then use the "Equivalent Network Password..." option to view the 64 character hex password for legacy devices.
    More details:
    *WPA = hex password*
On my existing network config (generated with Airport Admin Utility in Tiger) I had a 64/hex password. Using my macbook, I can only connect to the network using the WPA encryption option and my 64/hex password. If I use WPA2 encryption option and my 64/hex password, connection is failed.
    *WPA2 = ASCII password*
First, I set my AX to only allow WPA2 connections. I tested this on my AX by setting the WPA2 password to "appleapple". I connected to the network from my laptop using WPA2 and my ASCII password "appleapple" and everything worked fine. Then, I got the equivalent 64/hex password by using the "Equivalent Network Password..." option in Airport Utility and attempted to connect, it failed.
If I setting the AX to allow both WPA and WPA2 connections, I could use either "appleapple" or its 64/hex equivalent.
What I think Apple did was they attempted to make things easier by making you use the ASCII password model, which also pushes people in to using WPA2. They allow you to select "WPA and WPA2 Personal" purely for backwards compatibility.
So I think Airport Utility is range checking for 63 characters. When it reads my config with 64 characters, it throws it out and won't read it. I'll bet that if I read my config and the write it back, it will go back without a password (hopefully throwing an error).
The net result is that, as is, my network works totally fine, however if I want to change anything else (like enable NAT port mapping for BTMM) I'll need to rekey all of my devices.
