Pasting content into table cell deletes existing content. Why?

I'm not sure why you would expect something different. If you put something into a cell, then that is the contents of the cell. If you want to preserve the existing contents when pasting additional content, you don't want to paste into the cell, you want to paste into its contents.
Select the cell, then click again to put the insertion point into the contents, then Paste.

    "I found that one of my problems is that I abbreviated the month, i.e., Jan."
    If you include a period after Jan, Numbers will not recognize it as a shortened month name. use "Jan" (without the quotes).
    Regarding linking cells:
    If by "spreadsheets" you mean "Tables in the same document," cells in those two locations can be linked. In the simplest case (two tables on th same Sheet, or two tables, each with a name unique within the document, on separate Sheets, the Table name must be added to the cell reference.
    Example: formula in a cell on table named "This" referencing cell B2 on a table named "That" located elsewhere in the same document:
    =That::B2
    If the second table is in a different document, no. Numbers cannot reference external documents.
    If this is a significant issue, Provide Numbers Feedback, using the item of that name in the Numbers menu, to make a feature request for a future version of Numbers.

    There is no convert Table to text capability in Pages v5.2.2, as there was in Pages ’09 v4.3.
    You can keep the table while making the table grid vanish, leaving the existing tabular text structure. Select the table, and under the Format panel > Table tab, the following settings will produce this output. If selected, you can refine its document placement in the Arrange tab.

    I can paste a grahic into a table cell, but when i try to preview that page on the iPad, ibook shuts down. I must be placing the graphic wrong or formats are wrong, like object wrap or "inline" "floating" or "anchored". the graphic shows up in the fill once I copy and paste into the cell, but it doesnt show up when I look at the file info in the inspector. Also, once I preview the iBook author project on my iPad, that page will shut down the iBook app.

    Well KT.....I tried that. But it still didnt work. I have 2 pages that have tables. The first page is just a full page with text only with a gradient colored screen in the table column heads. The 2nd page has the graphic illustration in the 3 table cells. Both pages shut down when opened to full screen view. But when i remove the graphic, there is no problem with a shut down. I know its got to be something you have to do but is unwritten in any manual.

  • Pasting text into tables CS5

    I'm working on a calendar and I want to format one mini month grid with the set sizes for the date cells and then paste the grids for all the months into duplications of this grid. However, when I paste the new month in, it resets all the sizes of the cells to match the incoming table format rather than using the format of the table I'm pasting into.  As far as I've been able to tell, there is no way to set the sizes for the cells as a table or cell style. I dread having to actually edit each table separately to get them to be all the same size.  I've discovered if I convert the table I'm pasting into text and then copy and past the text with paste without formatting, it works, but there isn't the option to paste without formatting if I'm pasting from one table to another, so I end up with a lot of steps. Am I missing an easier way to do this?

    I just tried two versions of Word and that was the missing clue. Word X (10.4.1) doesn't work. Word 2008 (12.1) does. Appleworks, which is also an old app, doesn't work either. Looks like the problem was a tag along to upgrading from OS 10.4 >> 10.6 and CS4 >> CS5 at the same time. Why does that not surprise me?
    Also just sorted out the crashing problem. Turned off OpenGL and now it seems to work fine. Not sure why it worked before, maybe brush size or the combo of dynamics I was using. At least I'm back in biz.

    What did you mean named table? Did you mean the name of shape?
    If I understood correctly, we can use table object to manipulate a table shape on a slide. And here is a sample to insert text into the first cell for your reference:

    I applied a css style and I want the same type of scroll, so

    I think you mean something like this:
    Put this in your head:

    I have a need to import specific content from a web page (specific frame on the page) and store that data in a table. We currently have Microsoft Excel setup with a link to the page and import a specific frame off the page into Excel. But I would like to do this directly into PeopleSoft. Has anyone done something like this before?

    You haven't explained what the format of the text file is and
    how you want to display it. You can get the contents of a file with
    CFHTTP (if it's in a web-readable directory) and treat it as a
    query if it is in a delimited data format. Then you can use
    CFOUTPUT as you would with any other query.
    You can also use CFFILE to read the contents of a text file
    and display it in your page. You can use HTML PRE tags or you can
    replace the CR/LF with a BR tag to force a line break.. Lots of
    options, depending on your particular situation.

    It is bound to a Dataset which gets it's data from a SQL Database.
    Loading the Data and Filtering the data based on certain conditions work 100%. The problem I am having is as follows:
    I have a form on the Page that takes input and inserts a row into the Database. When this happens, the DataGrid won't automatically reflect the changes (even if I recall the Fill Method of the Dataset). No matter what I do, I have to refresh the entire page
    and THEN Fill the Dataset to see any changes.
    This is what strikes me as odd...
    When I do a delete row operation on the Database (Custom Method on the Dataset with conditions), and just Fill the Dataset again (without doing anything special), the row deletes and the changes is reflected IMMEDIATELY.
    What am I doing wrong here? Why would Delete Row reflect the changes on the DataGrid but no Insert Row?

    I have posted a script (it's actually in message 26 of the long topic on pasting unformatted text) that will import the clipboard contents into part of an existing table in such a way that the new contents retains the old formatting.
    You can find the script here:

    Basically, you:
    1. Open your Excel worksheet
    2. Copy and paste the range of cells you want to update to the clipboard
    3. Switch to your InDesign document and click in the top left cell where you want the updated data to start.
    4. Run the script.
    The new data replaces the old using the formatting of the old (provided that you have used only paragraph styles to do that formatting: any use of character styles within the cells will be lost).

    How do I delete selected cells (not just delete its contents) in Numbers?  In excel, this action would be followed by the option "shift cells up/left".

    Excel may call that "deleting cells", but it's really just replacing the contents of the cell(s) with contentes of cells below or to the right of the ones "deleted." Numbers accomplishes the same task by moving the (contents of the) cells into place, replacing the cells to be "deleted."
    In Numbers there are two ways to do this:
    Select the cells whose content is to be moved in.
    Drag the selected cells onto the top left one to be "deleted". Drop.
    If the target cell is not in sight:
    Select the cells to be moved.
    Go Edit > Mark for Move (or press option-command-X)
    Click on the top left target cell.
    Go Edit > Move (or press option-command-V)
