Path Monitoring in SC3.0

When setting up a SC3.0 environment (two nodes/hosts, each of which with 1 and only 1 path to a disk subsystem, 2 heartbeat cables, 1 quorum disk) I experienced an astonishing phenomenon:
Once an NFS service is defined (HA-protected), it comes to a host failover, i.e. when the heartbeat cables are pulled, when the 'active node' is powered off or when the 'active node' goes into ok prompt (stop + A). However it does n o t come to a host failover, when the last (in this case the only) cable to the disk subsystem is pulled. It seems as if there is no path monitoring. But that would contradict the concept of high availability.
Does someone have an idea how to fix/work around that or is my understanding of HA wrong?
Cheers Hans-Paul

Does someone have an idea how to fix/work around that
or is my understanding of HA wrong?Sun Cluster 3.0 does not perform disk path monitoring.
The responsibility for discovering failed disk paths is
left to other means: StorEdge Traffic Management
Software or VxVM DMP. In your case where you have
a single SCSI path, there is no opportunity for path
failover. As a rule, Sun Cluster 3.0 requires multiple
paths or mirrored storage.
In the future this will change. However, unlike networking
protocols, storage protocols to date provide little help in
determining path quality. Even logical volume managers
only do this via failed read or write attempts, which does
not provide full fault coverage. So, today, storage path
monitoring is nontrivial.

  • Call path monitoring for services invoked by TMQFORWARD

    Hi,
    I'm failing to make TSAM monitor call-paths for services invoked by TMQFORWARD.
    If the service(A) invoked by TMQFORWARD calls another service(B), the call path monitoring works, but the service(A) seems to be listed as the initiator (No indication of TMQFORWARD in the call path).
    If the service invoked by TMQFORWARD does not call other services at all, the invocation seems to be completely ignored and not listed in the Call Path Result List.
    I don't see TMQFORWARD in the call path initiator options list either.
    So is this setup not supported by TSAM yet?

    Yes, currently TMQFORWARD cannot be the initiator of call path.
    Regards,
    Yu Wang

  • Disk path monitoring

    I've a 2 node cluster that share a SCSI RAID.
    I've enabled monitoring of disk paths from both the nodes (for RAID disk only). All other disk paths are unmonitored.
    I've also enabled rebooting of the nodes if the disk paths fail.
    When I disconnect the SCSI cable from one of the nodes, the output of "cldev status" shows the disk path status as "Fail" but the node does not reboot.
    Is there something that I'm missing here?

    In the following output d10 is the shared disk:

  • Restart problems

    Hi
    After a restart the Mac would not start, I got the bong but then only half of my USBs lit and the caps lock was lit and I only got a gray screen. I forced closed down and restarted but got he same, I did this once more but then had to unplug leave for half an hour then started the Mac again but had to do it once more before it started. I have noticed that I have only had this problem after updating to 10.5.8 When after updating it asked me to restart the same things happened, so it seems to be a problem with 10.5.8 or restarting.
    Here is a log from the Console I hope it helps -

  • Image repaint preformance and threading

    Folks,
    I'm trying to make this sucker run faster.
    My question is, can anyone please guide me, especially with regards synchronising the Threads more efficiently... I'm thinking of using join and i]notify to make the "navigator" threads yield to the swing threads, to give it a chance to repaint before continuing... does this sound sane to you?
    Currently, without the thread.sleep it paints get the first "burst", and then nothing until the alrorithm has completed... exactly not what I wanted, because the whole point of this GUI is to watch the algorithm at work... sort of a "visual debugger"... I find that watching an algorithm play out helps me to "imagineer" ways of improving it... and in this case improvement means optimisation... it's all about getting from A-J faster than anyone else on the planet, especially those smarty-wishbone-legs C# programmers ;-)
    The code is too big to post (darn that 7500 char limit!) so I'll split it over several posts here, and I've also posted it as a single download to [MazeOfBoltonGUI2.java|http://groups.google.com/group/comp_lang_java_exchange/web/MazeOfBoltonGUI2.java] on my google group (comp lang java exchange).
    Cheers all. Keith.

    I'm persuaded that the main issue (no intermediate results drawn) is the improper use of SwingWorker.
    When you've got over it, you may want to consider other smaller-effect optimizations:
    Reconsider usage of an offscreen image*
    public void paintComponent(Graphics g) {
        super.paintComponent(g);
        if (image==null) {
          image = (BufferedImage)createImage(navigator.maze.cols, navigator.maze.rows);
          mazeColors = createMazeColors(navigator.maze);
        this.draw(image.createGraphics());
        ((Graphics2D)g).drawImage(image, 0, 0, super.getWidth(), super.getHeight(), null);
      }At first I didn't get why you wanted to draw an offscreen image, then paint it to the screen, all that in the EDT.
    After reading the draw() method more closely, I guess you want to ease the coding of the scaling: you draw an image where one cell = one pixel, then paint the image, scaled to the panel's display size.
    In terms of performance, I don't know how it stands:
    On one hand, the image creation if lighter (1 pixel per cell). And you have a point that the built-in scaling offered by Graphics2D.drawImage(image, size) may be efficient. I can't comment on that, I hope the granphics and hardware acceleration folks will pop in the thread.
    On the other hand, if the built-in scaling had poor performance, it may be good to try what "manual" scaling would bring you. That means, in a simplified version, skip the offscreen image creation, and draw directly on the paintComponent()'s Graphics2D argument. the drawing of a cell at coordinates c,r, for example, would look like:
    g.fillRect(c*CELL_WIDTH, r*CELL_HEIGHT, WIDTH, HEIGHT);Performance apart, the scaling as you do it currently has functional drawbacks, if you want pathes as 1-pixel width lines over large cells:
    - if the maze is smaller (in rows, columns) than the panel displaying it (in pixels), the cells will be scaled but the pathes too: so your 1-pixel lines appear as large as the cells. May or may not be a desired effect.
    - if the maze is larger than the display panel, the cells are shrinked, fine, but the so are the path lines, to a point where they may be invisible (probably depending on color blending, I'm a n00b at graphics operations).
    But maybe I misunderstood the need, and maybe the intended drawing of a path is actually the drawing of the rectangles of all its traversed cells, in special path colors?
    Reconsider intermediate allocations*
    Each paintComponent() call results in the allocation of a 2D-array of Color objects (method createMazeColors(Maze)).
    I don't see what the mazeColors array brings you. I assume you wanted to decouple the determination of colors (depending on cell state) and the rendering of the colors: what does it bring: no performance advantage (on the contrary, it adds a 2D array allocation, and 2xN^2 2D-array access), and does not improve the code readability either (subjective rant, sorry).
    Why don't you pass the Maze as an argument to the draw() method, and call the getColor(cell.ch) from there?
    Side note, maybe a bit subjective: performance apart, the design of the usage of this mazeColor array is a no-go!
    An instance method alters a static variable reference,which is used subsequently in another instance method, with no synchronization. The current code does that in a single thread (+paintxxx()+ is only called in the EDT), which keeps that safe (I'd dare to say: by luck), but considerations exposed below may have you refactor the design to introduce other threads, and may exhibit the thread-unsafety of this design.
    Consider drawing the image in a background thread.*
    Indeed the technique of drawing to an offscreen image is quite common, but it is often done to improve responsiveness (not raw performance) of Swing applications. Here is a resource about this (what the author calls the passive approach), although it doesn't use a background thread.
    The idea is that if a paintCompobnent() methods involves lots of computation (arithmetics of traversing a 2D model, scaling things, etc.), this takes CPU times in the EDT, and all subsequent events (such as, a MouseEvent, but also other painting events) keep pending on the event queue, which is consumed by the single event-dispatch thread. The result is that the UI appear unresponsive, and painting of other areas may seem hung.
    The idea is to move the computation to a background thread, which posts rendering to the EDT when the Image is ready to be displayed.
    Of course this doesn't gain any CPU time. This only ensures the EDT uses a minimal part of this CPU (only render and image and process events), instead of performing the whole computation.
    In your case you already have a background thread, and indeed an appropriate choice, a SwingWorker. The application of this technique would consist in calling the draw() method in the worker thread (in the update(Path) method), and invoke super.publish() only after the image has been updated. Note that the process(List<Path>) could then ignore its argument (you may reconsider the choice of type parameter of the worker), and simply get the latest version of the image attribute).
    Of course in this technique, the offscreen image filling is called synchronously from the Navigator, so this halts the algorithm part itself, for the duration of the image generation. You may refine the technique by spawning a dedicated thread for the image generation - with subtle guard code to handle occasions when the algorithm goes faster than the image generation, and posts a new update(Path) while the image generation for the previous path has not completed yet...
    Recuce the number of things to redraw*
    Two parts:
    first, depending on the number of cells and pathes, there may be (yet another) optimization, to not redraw the whole offscreen image, but only the cells/path that have changed in the last update(). In particular, if a path is not a line but a list of cells, then it's quite easy, reusing the current offscreen image, to only fillRect(...) the appropriate cells.
    Second, if a path is not rendered as a thin line over larger cells, but as cells themselves rendered in special path colors, you may paint cells and path in one go: instead of drawing, first the cells, then the path, draw only the cells, electing the color using a decision method such as:
    private Color getColor(Cell) {
        if (cell.getPathState()!=NOT_IN_ANY_PATH) {
            return getColor(cell.getPathState());
        else {
            return getColor(cell.ch);
    }Of course this forces you to modify your data model, and update the new pathState as part of the algorithm (or better isolated, in the update(Path) method, before invoking the drawing machinery). Maybe that was the intention of the mazeColors array?
    I haven't studied your other posts on the logic of the MazeOfBolton algorithm, so I don't know if it's acceptable for you that a cell appear to have only one path state, as opposed to one for each of the pathes that traverse it. This last trick may then seem incorrect, but please consider it as only a graphical information, and indeed your current image drawing draws only ONE path for a given cell (the last path in currentPaths that traverses this cell ).

    good day to all
    we have following problem:
    - running GroupWise 8.0.1 on SLES and allmost all clients (Windows)
    - Windows 2008-64bit Server, GW 8.0.1 and Office 2007
    - we save Office and other Documents in Library to share it with other members, no document integration is activated
    - when we make changes in document we become the following error
    groupwise cannot "excel path" monitor and bring it back to the library.....
    - same constellation running all versions from GroupWise 7 on the same server, no problems
    i would appreciate any help

    bad news, the following error (opening Excel documents from the gw-lib will result in an error message
    (before opening) that Groupwise can't control excel and document have to
    put back manually after closing.
    this hapens only to documents opening with excel 2007, word and adobe are ok.
    try to copy GWXL2007.XLAM in microsoft XLSTART.XLAM folder, still not better, each user has under appdata\roaming a XLSTART start folder??
    appreciate any idees

The only clue I have is from Console messages, since I didn't think of checking Activty Monitor...

    What I find odd is all of the Google Chrome Helper messages, but I have no idea at all what caused it.

    Not to mention, after restarting my startup disk it returned to normal.

  • Contents of the applications folder disappeared

    Hi
    I would appreciate some help: The contents of the applications and utlities folders (viewable in Finder under Macintosh HD and under by user profile) have deleted themselves for no reason that I can work out. I do have a recent backup which I can use but I am reluctant to do anything without first understanding why this might have happened and I'd appreciate any suggestions that anybody has.
    Full details below:
    While using my macbook earlier today, upon clicking on an application in the dock (Mail), nothing happened and instead the icon faded and a question mark appeared. Confused I clicked on the icon below it (iChat) and the same happened.
    I opened finder to look at the applications folder and saw all my applications disappearing one by one. At this point, I though the worst and immediately turned of wifi since it looked like somebody was systematically deleting files one by one.
    I am now left with a "working" version of Snow Leopard that looks identical to how it did. It is just that absolutely nothing now works (including all system preferences, disk utilites) since the contents of the applications and utilities folders are missing. All icons I click on turn to question marks, except so far finder and java (which seems to be in another folder). Other files seem to be completely intact. Finder does not find them either.
    Results of my own investigation:
    - I am fairly paranoid about computer security and so I doubt this is an attack.
    - It seems most likely to be a virus but I do run a virus checker and the computer and regularly scan the drives which has not indicated any problems. I will need to reinstall antivirus before I can check if there is any sign of a problem.
    - I've checked the disks via Snow Leopard install disk and they show no errors. Given also that the delete seems very selective (applications only) I don't think that this is a disk problem (the laptop is in any case only 9 months old).
    - I definitely did not do anything that would normally delete any programmes - I have seen a few posts about accidentally deleting the applications folder which is not what I have done (unless you think that fiddling with iCal and Mail settings just before this happened could have anything to do with it).
    Thanks in advance for your help.

  • System Log Printer Directory Error

    I'm attempting to resolve some error messages in my system log.
    Here's one concerning my epson printer. I reinstalled the driver.
    What is causing the error? I did trace the folders to /Library/Printers/EPSON/InkjetPrinter.
    I can't locate a EPW/IJEPWAgent.app directory. So, is the error being cause because it can't find this 'missing' directory?

    Thanks.

    After SL update my system.log if filling with error messages.
    Does any process delete the system.log periodically?
    Yes. There are three automatic jobs that run daily, weekly, and monthly doing this sort of thing. They run in the early hours of the morning if your Mac is awake, or shortly after it wakes up if it was sleeping. In Leopard, if it was powered-off, they won't run; I don't know if it's the same in Snow.

  • Imac turns itself on everyday at 7pm with no scheduled start up

    In the energy saver schedule there is no startup time.
    The restart after power fail is unchecked.
    Everyday at 7pm it just turns on. NOT wakes up, it actually turns on and boots up. My time zone is US central (-6 GMT).

  • SpringBoard crash

    Hello,
    I wanted to report a bug in iOS 5.1 and higher (found on an iPhone 4 and an iPod touch 4th generation)
    Here is something about the problem:
    Summary: When you try to uninstall an Application by clicking on the "X", Springboard will crash.
    Steps to Reproduce: Just try to remove an Apllication.
    Result: SpringBoard will crash
    Notes: Seems to be fixed when adding the folder "/var/mobile/Library/Application Support/Ubiquity/" (owner: mobile, group: mobile, chmod: 0755) to IPSW and restore to this IPSW.
    Found on iPhone 4 and iPod touch 4th generation.
    Affected Software: iOS 5.1 (9B176) to iOS 5.1.1 (9B206 and 9B208)
    Parts of Log (got from "iPhone Configuration Utility"):
    XXX xx xx:xx:xx iPhone com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.ubd): (com.apple.ubd) Path monitoring failed on "/private/var/mobile/Library/Application Support/Ubiquity/ubiquity.keepalive": No such file or directory
    XXX xx xx:xx:xx iPhone com.apple.launchd[1] (com.apple.ubd): (com.apple.ubd) Throttling respawn: Will
    Please fix this in iOS 5.1.2 / 5.2 / 6.0
    I hope I was able to help

    Springboard, as well as winterboard are programs used in a Jailbroken iPhone.
    Springboard is the launcher for all iPhone apps (well, at least ones that you can launch). When jailbreaking and themeing came around, Summerboard was the first tool to manipulate how the Springboard looked. When 2.0 came around, Winterboard took over where Summerboard started.
    Thus, Under the Terms of Use of this forum it is prohibited to discuss jail breaking. By jail breaking your iPhone you void any warranty you may have, forfeit any support from this forum, leave your iPhone vulnerable to malware and risk bricking your iPhone should you attempt future software updates or restoring your iPhone - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743.

  • System Log

    I discovered that my system log is 1.15GB.
    Can I trash this file, or is it important to leave as is?
    Thanks.

    I trashed the old system log.
    Restarted computer. Here's the recent log. I don't seen any way of including an attachment
    I could use help here to see if anything is going wrong.
    Thanks.

  • Flash Crashing Browsers: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGBUS)

    Hi everyone,
    I've been having problems with Flash crashing both Firefox and Safari for some time now. I've archived and installed, erased and installed, installed OnyX and "cleaned" per a now closed thread here on the same topic... my last resort is to replace the RAM.
    I'm sure someone else has had this problem and I'm really hoping that someone has figured out how to fix it (short of replacing hardware, of course).
    Here is the complete crash report from Home> Library> Crash Reporter in case it helps. If you have any suggestions please let me know! Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you so much for any insight.
