PCIe Graphics Card with Magma T/Bolt Expansion box

Does anyone here have a good or bad experience with the Radeon 5770 or 5870 cards used in a Magma Thunderbolt expansion box in conunction with a MacMini?
I'm looking to purchase a graphics card to go into my Magma box, but not sure which card will be supported in this configuration.
Thanks,
NE

I have seen a couple people were unable to boot OS X if they had an Nvidia 8800 installed. You'll need something that OS X can see IF you want to see early bootup messages (such as Vista startup options).
Can't say I've seen a message with "Marox" mentioned. So only way to know for certain is old trial and error.
There are newer graphics cards coming out. There is the Radeon X1900 (which is over-due for an update), and the Nvidia 8600 GTS series works in Vista and at least doesn't block OS X from working, but is only a step above X1900.
Apple sells a $1600 Nvidia for 3D. And as you can see, graphics options is a "weak spot."

  • Apple Cinema Display 23-inch with PCI graphics card on a PC...?

My wife has a Dell Dimension 2400 PC along with a Mac G4. The Mac will obviously drive the 23-inch display with no problem, but the PC has on-board graphics which are awful. The only improvement is via a PCI graphics card, and a KVM switch (using the DVI interface on both Mac and PC). Does anyone know of an inexpensive PCI graphics card which will cope with the 23-inch display? Gaming is not on the list of priorities, but page layouts for posters and small (8-page) brochures is what it's needed for.
The Dell's operating suystem is XP Professional, and the G4's is Tiger. Thanks for any help.

will solve this? I believe I need a DVI-D female to VGA male adapter?
That adapter is for connecting a VGA display to a computer's DVI port.
If your computer has the ATI Rage 128 graphics card it will have one DVI port and one VGA port.  It won't run both ports simultaneously.
If the display has a DVI plug, plug it into the computer's DVI port.  No special cable or adapter is needed, but the computer may not support the resolution of the 23".
If the display uses ADC (Apple Display Connector)

Anyone having a PCI Graphics Cards running under Arch? My card is a radeon 9200se.
I am trying to set up a multiseat system, but with no luck.
I just cant seem to get the card working, not even if i remove my APG card and not even if I do a reinstall with only the PCI card installed. Hva tried booth the free driver and the fgrlx driver. The card works just great with an other distro (Ubu...).

    Hi,
does anyone know if you can use the Sapphire 11168-02-20R HD 5670 512MB GDDR5 PCIE Graphics Card on the xeon intel power macs  ?
I did see on on another discusion that the ATI Radeon cards were all good, but I wanted to check.

If would have to be flashed to even have the possibility of working at all in a mac.
I suggest you start with the following MacRumors thread if you are considering such a thing:

Thanks, but are these are silent?
Why do they cost over 10 x what seems available for PC?
Is it not possible to flash the cards for mac?

  • Extra PCI graphics cards

    Hi.
I currently have a dual screen setup using one of those MPDD PCI graphics cards, and I really couldn't do without it!!
But now I'm getting greedy for more screen space! Would it slow my not amazingly fact mac down much I f I got one or maybe even two more graphics cards?
Also, I want to do it on the cheap.... Can anyone recommend some really cheapo cards? I only use the main screen for anything graphics intensive. The rest are for showing code, website previews and stuff like that.
    Ta,
    Dan

I am the snazz. Nah - it's not so much multitasking as that I hate switching between apps and windows, and I have plenty of space and an seemingly endless supply of free CRT monitors.
I build websites, and it's nice having Dreamweaver open with the wysiwyg filling one screen and the buttons and code on the other, but what I'd really like to do is have the website I'm working on another screen and another for reference or just good ol' iTunes!
As it's just VGA screens I'll be using, and as I said I only ever use the main one for photoshop/illustrator is it still an issue using cheapo cards?

  • Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)?

Does the standard Intel HD Graphics 4000 in the 13 inch Macbook pro stand up to other graphics cards with dedicated memory ( 1GB of memory for instance)? I need a laptop for college and the Engineering program suggests a dedicated video card with minimum 1GB of video memory.

I have a Intel HD 4000 in my Mac Mini (late 2012), and it's okay for what I need it.
    However:
    - there were a few issues with flickering on the video output to external monitors. These were solved through a firmware update that came with OSX 10.8.3 - for the majority of the users. There is apparently still a small group of users that still has issues. You can read long threads about this here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4472316?start=0&tstart=0
    and here
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4490924?start=0&tstart=0
So for most of us (me included) this issue is solved, but it seems that certain displays / monitors don't work well with the intel HD4000, don't know if there is a pattern or a list of monitor models...
    - there was an issue with the color calibration on the HDMI output. No matter how much you tried to calibrate, the results remained unsatisfying. All light colors were crushed to white, wrong contrast, ...
You can read about this here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1482487
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4480354?start=0&tstart=0
The same firmware update improved this a little, good enough for me, but I can imagine it's not good enough if you do graphic work and need reliable colors from your monitor. On HDMI output, the thunderbolt/MDP output is fine. So it's mainly a dual monitor setup issue.
If it's for graphic work, I'd go for a Mac Book Pro with dedicated GPU !

  • Imac Graphics cards with Premiere Pro cs6

    Hello
I just changed over to Premiere Pro cs6 from avid and fcp 7/x. I am already sure i made the right decision. I love the interface, i really love it! and cant wait to get stuck into it properly.
I just bought a brand new, all singing all dancing 27 inch imac full spec 32gb RAM with a NIVIDA Geforce GTX 680MX 2048mb card. However pro cs6 by default is using the “Mecuary playback engine sofware only” instead of the “Mecuary playback engine Acceleration [CUDA] and i cant change it. Does it cs6 not support this card and if so will it in the future?
Any help would be greatly apericated!
    Kind regards

    Hi Paul
You mention last week that you had  the same problem as me with your new iMac and graphics card with cs6.
I was just onto  Adobe and they told me that they could not assist.
Can you tell me who you death with?
I am really keen to get this card running!

    Thanks.

Hello, thank you for all these informations.
Right now my graphic card current Bios Version is 80.04.00.2F (P2004.0010). Is it the good one ?
I've found out yesterday evening about the GPT Drive, when I saw it on my laptop which works fine with UEFI fastboot mode.
For the moment the main drive on my desktop is MBR formated SSD.
Is it safe to clone the MBR SSD Drive to another GPT formated SSD Drive ?
In my Partition soft I saw that it can convert MBR Drives to GPT without data loss. Could this work ?
    Thanks for reading me.

  • D10 freezes with NVS290 and 2 x Matrox T30 PCI graphic card

    Hi,
I have a problem with D10 that have NVS290 as a standard graphic card and then 2 x Matrox T30 PCI graphic.
I have updated to the most recent BIOS and still my system freezes. It has been testes on Dell and HP workstation and it;s working well.
Can you please help me to find out possible root cause
    Thanks

if i'm understanding this correctly, you have an NVS 290 in a PCI-e x16 slot and two matrox T30s in the PCI slots.   i highly doubt this configuration is supported as the D10 doesn't like to have different models graphics cards installed.
when exactly does the D10 freeze?   will it boot past POST?   does is freeze in the OS?   if so, what OS are you using?
have you tried it with just the two matrox cards installed and not the quadro?   if so, what was the result?
if it doesn't work with the two PCI cards installed without the NVS 290 then you'll either have to source a second NVS 290 to drive your displays or one or two NVS 440 or 450 cards to handle everything.

  • Adding a PCI graphics card to a G5 to get S-Video out - ???

    Hello!
    I have a G5 and a Radeon 9650...everything is fine except:
I would like to have S-Video out to preview my video scenes on a preview monitor!
Unfortunately the Readeon 9650 has no video out and because I'm using two display, the Apple DVI-to-Video adapter is not an option for me.
Ok! What about sticking an old Radeon 7000/9200/9250 PCI in my G5, so I will get video out and I could even attache a third display to it:-) ???
As usual, PC graphic cards are way cheaper as the Apple ones, so is it possible to use a PC card WITHOUT flashing it???
(I mean, the system just uses my 9650 for normal operation and the PCI card will just be used after OSX is running)
Has anybody any experience with using two graphic cards in there G5??? Are there any problems with OSX?
    Cheers
    Balrock

    Hi Edwin,
    thanks for your answer!
I thought that I will have to flash the card, but that should not be so much of a problem.
Will a flashed (or nativ Mac) card in the PCI slot work without any problems together with my AGP 9650?
Or will it confuse OSX and slow down the G5?
There is also the problem of flashing a Radeon 9250(they are quite cheap!). Only Club3D cards are flashable as far as I know, but they are only tested when beeing the main/only graphics card in the computer.
So, is it possible that flashed cards, not able to handle the boot process/be the main card, will still work with video out after OSX is up and running?
I won't let my camera run all the time as a Firewire/S-Video converter.
    Cheers
    Balrock

  • 3 or 4? Graphics cards with MPE acceleration!

Being an experimenter with my new Asus X99-E WS motherboard after running about 50 runs of PPBM8 and having four x16 slots which theoretically can run simultaneously at 16 lanes, today I could not resist running a third GTX graphics card.  In slot 1, I installed my GTX 780, slot 3 had a GTX 770 and Slot 5 had my GTX 970. (slot 7 has an Areca ARC-1883i) and I have a Samsung XP941 which also uses 4 PCIe lanes.
Amazing all 3 Graphic cards contribute to the MPE acceleration!  If my 860 watt power supply had more output connectors and could handle the load I would have tried a fourth card.  My best score with our GPU assisted MPEG2-DVD timeline export was 13 seconds with two GPU's and with the third GPU added I got a 23% improvement to 10 seconds. Here is GPU-Z showing all GPU's are working simultaneously.  I had to duplicate the sequence 4 times to give me time to collect data.
Premiere 8.2.0.65 and notice that the GTX 970 is working harder than the other two

I guess I should have said that the GTX 970 is trying to work harder than the other two.  Notice that the Memory Clock on the GTX 970 SC which should be 1750 MHz according to the specifications falls back to 1500 MHz when running any CUDA application, while The GTX 780 SC is running at the its specified 1750 MHz and notice my GTX 770 SC is easily overclocked to the 2000 MHz
If you have not paid attention to these confusing GPU Memory Clock speeds before there is no consistency which speed is specified.  For instance they might specify 1500 MHz one place (like GPU-Z) and 3000 MHz in another test like NV-Z and on some specification sheets say Effective Memory Clock 6000 MHz and/or 6 Gbps
MPE acceleration is dependent on CUDA cores and Memory Speed (Memory Bandwidth) and now on architecture.  nVidia claims Maxwell is 1.4x more effective that Kepler was.
I am exploring the Maxwell memory speed reduction without success so far.  But it is not an Adobe problem the same thing happens on any CUDA application and also is on the GTX 980.
I still believe the GTX 900's are a great performer for medium to high end cards.

  • Matching a PCIe graphics card w/ proper PCIe slot question.

    Hi all,
By all i mean Harm and Jim - the hardware wizards!   One more hardware question....
In comparing two Supermicro mb's, the X8SAX and the X8STE, i noticed that the X8SAX has two PCIe 2.0  x16 slots while the X8STE has one x8 PCIe 2.0 in a x16 slot.
So... my question is... If i'm going to use a high end graphics card like the GTX 260 or a lower end Geforce 9500 GT, buying the X8STE mb would be a mistake because both cards are x16 and putting them in the x8 using a x16 slot would degrade the speed in half - correct?

    Harm,
Of the Supermicro i7 single socket mb's, the X8STE would have been ideal with 1-x16PCIe, 3-x4PCIe and 2-PCI slots if the x16PCIe slot had 16 lanes and the mb had no graphics. Also, With the X8SAX, if you are using double wide graphic card, you are covering up a PCIe slot leaving you with ony one more on the mb.
But why use two video cards? What is the value added?
I like many editor's, I use dual monitors during the video production process so i can see Pr, Ps, Ae or Sb at the same time. I find it more productive and convenient. I have been toying with the idea of  getting a third monitor. But with this mb, it would leave me with no usable slots other than the two 64bit PCI-X slots.
Although Supermicro mb's are great, I own an older dual Xeon NLE system, they just don't any boards - currently - that satisfy me. Both boards leave you wanting a little. But I would agree with you that the X8SAX is still the better choice.
In any case, would you agree that putting an x16PCIe graphics card in the X8STE with only 8 lanes in the x16PCIe slot would have been a waste?
Just for curiosity, what Supermicro single i7 mb would you have chosen?

Processor  2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics  Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB
    Software  OS X 10.8.2 (12C60
My radio control airplane/helicopter flight sim runs slow. Message reads "Warning FPS to low".
I've been reading about using an eGPU but the info seems to be conflicting. Can I or can I not do this? If I can, what do I need?
This is my first Mac and with this one exception I love it. Thanks for any input you folks might provide.
    John

AFAIK, there are PCIe TB adapters like this - http://eshop.macsales.com/item/OWC/HELIOSTB1/ - but I don't know that you can use a graphics card in them with a MBP. You might want to give OWC a call, though, and see if they know of someway to bypass the onboard GPU through a PCIe card.
    Good luck,
