Pcmcia modem setup

I'm having unexpected difficulties in getting a pcmcia modem to work on my new Dell Inspiron 2200. The laptop has an internal hsf modem which I managed to get to dial but which refused to negotiate a connection, so I gave up on that and bought a Psion Gold Card 56k pcmcia modem - I had one of these on my previous laptop and it worked fine with Arch, so I was expecting no trouble this time.
I am trying to set up the modem to dial through kppp and I have followed the steps in the wiki (ppp,kppp,2.6 kernel). As the modem shows up in Windows as Com5, I have created the symlink from /dev/ttyS4 to /dev/modem as advised. Problem is, whichever device I select in kppp, I always get the response "The modem is busy".
cardctl ident gives:

However, I do not see the modem listed by cardmgr when it loads during the boot process, nor do I see it in the output of dmesg (I can't recall whether I should).
I am loading the modules pcmcia, pcmcia_core and ppp_generic through rc.conf, and the pcmcia daemon.
Am I missing anything here? I'm starting to wonder if this Gold Card is different from my old one and maybe they changed the chipset.
Maybe I should add that I was able to get the supplied internal wireless card (Dell TrueMobile 1370 / Broadcom) running fine with ndiswrapper, but this should not affect the operation of the modem afaiaw? Despite having the wireless access at home, I do need to have dialup working for when I go travelling.

I have fixed this problem. In /etc/pcmcia/config.opts there is a line
exclude irq 7
as this is meant to be reserved for the parallel port. But my laptop doesn't have a parallel port.
I discovered that my pcmcia card was using irq 7 in Windows XP, and after commenting out that line I am able to access the modem.

If a commercial solution is an option, you might consider contacting some of the
NI Alliance Members. I know of one that has a product called "ModemNOW!" that
I've heard good things about. Check out their page on the NI Solutions

CDMA 1x PCMCIA modem

My boss has recently given me a CDMA 1x V3G PCMCIA modem. I've found a compatible driver for it (I think) but I can't add it to my list of available modems.
I know that in previous versions of OS X there was a modems folder in the Library, but I can't find an equivalent.
Does anyone have any suggestions for how to add drivers to the list of recognised modems?

Newbee problem - PCMCIA - GPIB Setup

This may be an extremely simple question, but here it goes:
I have just gotten an Contec PCMCIA-GPIB card for an old Thinkpad 360 model.
My problem is that I don't know how to reference to the card (address & irq).
Which should I use and what is best.
On Win95 I found IRQ 3 to be available, and adr. 03E0-03EF - so I setup the
PCMCIA card this way in the control panel - System. But how do I connect
from LabWindows 5.0 ?. I'm using a HP34401A DMM and begin with the hp34401a_init
command. Is this correct ?
I will be more than happy to receive a few lines of code used for another
PCMCIA card, then I will probably be able to tell how to setup the card.

If the revision number is C or lower, there can be problems and the card should be exchanged see http://www.ni.com/cgi-bin/search/search.cgi?scope=knowledgebase&query=1D3CIEGX for more details.
It may be a defective card. If possible, try another PCMCIA-GPIB card in that system. If it does have to be returned, RMA's are only done through phone support (512-795-8248).

Two Buttons not working, mistake on PCMCIA, modem,....

Ok first of all I have problems with two of my four extra buttons on my Samsung X30. These two don't give keycodes when I try this with xev. Anybody an idea how to use these buttons anyway? When I push these buttons I get the following in demsg:

I see what it says about setkeycodes but finally I didn't know the keycodes for this keys so I couldn't set it I think.
Second problem is the PCMCIA. I configured YENTA as module and activated Cardbus in my kernel under PCMCIA and this is loading fine:

But when pcmcia daemon is loaded on init that the module I82356 couldn't be loaded and so I copiled this module in my kernel. Now I get message on daemon load that this module couldn't be loaded: no such device. Very strange I think. i82356 is a ISA bridge and I'm pretty sure I don't have one on my machine so I don't understand why he depends on it.
I also get the message cardmgr[2739]: watching 2 sockets. I don't know exactly what this means but finally it has something to do with the pcmcia and the memory card reader I have on my machine which are both on the same socket or something like this. It would be very interesting if my memory card reader is working also when my pcmcia is working. I couldn't test both because I don't own such cards.
Last but not least I want to set up my modem so when I need it in the future I can use it without problems. It's a AC97 modem and I activated SND_INTEL8X0 for the sound and SND_INTEL8X0M which should be the modem. The last one is marked as EXPERIMENTAL but I think it should work but I don't have a clue how to get it working and how I should see if the driver runs correct. I have installed ppp but I couldn't start it because I don't have a /dev/ppp and when I create one with mknod /dev/ppp c 108 0 and try it again I get:
/usr/sbin/pppd: The remote system is required to authenticate itself
/usr/sbin/pppd: but I couldn't find any suitable secret (password) for it to use to do so.

thx my modem is working now but I need the proper daemon script to load it because I had to build the package for myself and the script available in this tar don't run. Before I'll post this original not working script I must make something clear.
The snd-intel8x0m driver can also be used to run this modem AFAIK everything runs with ALSA then but when I load this intel modem module My sound isn't working any more like phrakture said before. At the time it's better I think, to use the driver that comes with the slmodem package named slusb or slamr depending on what sort of modem it is exactly.
But now my faulty daemon script for slmodem:

PCMCIA modem cannot run on PXI (Win NT os)

"hi. i am using a PXI system which runs on Win NT.i bought a Win NT compatible pcmcia card modem to be used with the NI pc card carrier. However when running on Win NT, the modem wasnt able to detect my modem. and it simply couldnt dial. I was running fine when i use it on Win 98. anybody who have similar configuration as mine (specs below) and knows the solution pls help!! =( quite urgent

Windows NT does not have native support for PCMCIA. To get PCMCIA to work under Windows NT, you must have a third party card and socket services installed.
You may want to try an product called CardWizard. I have heard of people having success with it.

I need to setup a fax modem on Sun Enterprise SPARC T2000 server. I am looking for a modem which is compatible.
Can anybody tell me which hardware I should go for.

Have you installed the driver package either from the setup CD that came with the printer or from HP's download site:

Unfortunately, their documentation seems to be geared towards Windows, so it's not clear if faxing from your Mac is supported.

WRT54G and Comcast Cable Modem Setup

Please help. I just bought a LINKSYS WRT54GS and I'm trying to set up a wireless network for my laptop (No other computers on network), and my ISP is Comcast. The model # on the Comcast Broadband Modem is DHG535-2 and the manufacturer is RCA. The computer sees the network but only shows a local connection. No internet. I have tried everything and it will not let get on the internet. I have checked all cables several times and the connections seem to be right. I don't know where to go from here. Can someone please help me? I will be very grateful!

Is your problem related to getting on the internet in general? Or are you able to get on the internet, but now you need to get the wireless network setup?
1) There might be some lights on the cable modem that indicate if it is successfully connecting to the internet. On mine(a different model/brand) I have three lights that must all be lit up to indicate I'm on the internet. Whenever they are not all lit up, it is usually an indication that either there is a problem with comcast's network, a problem with my coaxial cables providing the Comcast service, interferance (one time they had to come out and replace some of their equipment at my apartment complex, if you have analog cable and look at the lower channels on your cables TV, 4-10,and there is lots of static, then this might be a problem, a tech told me those channels are close to the range that internet is provided on, so static on them can indicate problems that would also effect internet0, or the lights not being lit up might indicate you hagve registered that modem on their network. There is some sort of process that you have to do when you first get comcast internet service that gets you setup on their network. I believe it registers the MAC address of your cable modem. If the lights are not lit up(this is where you need to refer to your cable modem manual to see what lights indicate problems), then you may need to go through this process or check with Comcast.
In my case I had a CD from comcast in the Startup Package, had to connect cable modem to my PC via USB(what a freaking pain), and then go through the software's wizard to get setup on their network. This also installs some junk on my computer like a usb driver. Additionally, I had a computer with two network cards, and the software would not work correctly on it(kept choosing the wrong network card. I had to actually remove one of the cards, and then go through the wizard.
2) You should be able to connect the cable modem directly to your computer via CAT5, to see if you can get an itnernet connection that way first. This will at least verify that you can get on the internet before you intreduce all the other variables of the router. If you can't get on this way.

Dual Modem setup

I have a Cisco Wireless Router with 2 WAN ports and I want to use 2 modems, as I have a DSL and Cable internet line, with one being a backup just in case I lose connection with the other. How would I go about setting this up? One modem is on Fa0 and the other is on Fa1.

Modem Setup Says Airport is Turned Off When It's Turned On

I'm trying to set up a new modem/wireless account using Motorola 2247-N8. During the se- up phase it keeps telling me that the AirPort is turned off, when in fact it's turned on and can pick up many wireless networks in my vacinity. This problem keeps kicking me out of the set up phase so I can't even set up the new network. I go into System Prefrences>Networks and the AirPort is there with a green light. What is the problem?

If your MacBook (MB) is able to "see" and connect to other Wi-Fi networks then chances are the AirPort card built-in the MB is not the issue.
By default, your Motorola Netopia gateway device has a local (LAN-side) router IP address of: 192.168.1.254. Your MB will need to be on this local network in order for it to find it. This may require that you temporarily reset your MB to using an IP address, like 192.168.1.100. You can do this via System Preferences > Network > AirPort. Easier still I would recommend that you temporarily connect the MB to the Motorola using an Ethernet cable. The Motorola should assign the MB the proper IP address and you should now be able to access the Motorola's web-based administrator interface.

Tecra A8 - modem trouble with v.22

I cant connect with v.22 (1200b/s) to the pbx system(for programming)

Modems start to handshake (1-2sec) and then NO CARRIER

Need HELP Connecting new Laptop to a wired modem

Purchased a new HP Pavillion laptop with both ethernet and wireless capabilities-Win 7. Currently have only an old Westell E90-610015-06 modem. Has one wired port to attach a pc. Was/am using an old IBM wired Thinkpads using XP. Work fine, but slow.
Decided to come into the modern world. New laptop connects to the wired lan, can ping the ethernet card, the modem and yahoo.com. When entering most web addresses. get no display of the web page back to the display. Took PC to another Verizon acct and get same failure on a different Westell model of modem/router.
Laptop works fine at Staples and a friends house using cable network PTD. Can access all web sites.
Have spent at least 25 hrs online with various Verizon of India support levels, trying all settings and tests on the HP and Westell.
They blame the Laptop, which I have reloaded twice to factory settings. They Refuse to send a current modem to eliminate that possibility.    Spoke with yet another new PC purchaser, he spent 2.5 hrs on the phone getting his to work. So not unique problems???
Any help or direction I can use on my next 'trip' to India would be greatly appreciated!

New Westell 6100 arrived next day as promised. Modern revision!
As a precaution, since we had played with and checked every setting we could think of, I decided to reload the laptop back to factory settings, and set back up again to ensure we were back to stock settings where it had worked at other sites.
After the reload, I checked to see if the laptop acted the same before swapping out the modem,(for the 4th time) and it did! Didn't Work. Got the LAN connected msg, but would not pass internet data in both directions.
I made sure I followed the new modem setup instructions word for word.
Disconnecting old modem and installed the new one. Except, I DID NOT use the new ethernet cable from the modem to the laptop nor did I replace the phone line (rj11 ends) from the phone jack. Since I was sure both were good as they worked on the OLD IBM laptop.
Modem powered up and after a bit, got the correct indicator lites per instructions. At the point the instructions said open the browser and the Verizon Activation screen would come up, it didn't, instead got a 404 error! After closing and opening IE a few times with the same 404 error, I decided to try entering Verizon.com and low and behold, the activation screen came up and was sucessfully completed.
After completion, It still didn't work. I clicked around the network settings here and there for a bit, did a POR to the laptop, .......them NOTICED the Internet lite had turned red on the modem. When it didn't go green after a bit....I powered off the modem, waited about 30 seconds, powered back up and MY GOD....IT WORKS!
Loaded Google Chrome so I have another browser to compare with if future problems, and will probably add FireFox to the mix. Went out to EBAY, AOL, GOOGLE NEWs sites, got info back sucessfully...... Connected the printer and Win7 went out and brought back the drivers. Left the in-laws to familiarize themselves with Win 7 and ensure any other sites the use work.
Will head back later to install Office and Virus protection and and MSN updates
If it wasn't the modem, getting a new one forced a reactivation thru Verizon setup and settings being reset, that allowed the new HP Laptop to be recognized and work???.

Verizon phone helpdesk needs figure out a way so that each time you call on the same problem, you are not starting back at square 1 with level 1 support. After a given time or # of calls, there should be auto escalation to the next level of support. After all, this process stared Aug 4th. If I hadn't been able to see this laptop work at 2 other non Verizon locations, Level 1 would have had me returning this laptop to the MFG 4 times!!!!!

Is Airport Express compatible with ADSL2 modem?

I already have an ADSL2 Modem (with both ethernet and usb cables) which was provided by the ISP. I am looking out for a router since my current Linksys router is giving problems. I am thinking of purchasing the Airport Express since it gives me the option of using my printer and ipod wirelessly as well.
I just wanted to clarify if the modem will be compatible with the Airport Express. Also, if the Airport Express can be used as a proper wireless router for accessing the internet wirelessly through my MacBook Air.

Thanks. I checked on my modem setup page and PPP over Ethernet ( PPPoE ) is selected. Does the AirPort Express work with this? Also, how is the connectivity? What is the difference between G & N. Previously I had a Linksys Wireless G router. The Airport Express seems to be N router? Will that create any problems. I just want to clarify before I buy it.

Trying for wireless network with D-Link modem, but no Internet connection

I am trying to figure out a way to use my iBook elsewhere in my house, without being physically connected to my modem. I have a SpeedStream 5100 modem, use DSl, and just got a D-Link DI-524 router. My problem is that I cannot access the configuration page for the router. When I type in 192.168.0.1, as instructed, my we b browser "times out." I also cannot "ping" this address.
I have tried multiple web browsers, have tried resetting the modem and the router, and have tried to contact D-Link and SBC for help, to no avail.
My iBook recognizes a wireless network when all of the machines are connected, but I can't get online on either machine.
As instructed by D-Link, I have changed the ISP address in my network preferences, but something doesn't seem to be working.
What am I doing wrong?
By the way, I have downloaded no firmware or drivers for the D-Link; I just hooked it up.

Yes, the cable from the modem is plugged into the WAN port; the cable from the iMac is plugged into the WLAN port (I've tried all four ports). (By the way, don't feel bad about asking; I am not the most tech-savvy.)
The IP address I have been trying to connect with the router/modem setup is 192.168.0.1. There is no way for me to input any numbers in the "router" box; it is blank.
Normally, when I connect using DSL, my IP address is different, and there is a router number there, too.
I have tried contacting D-Link's customer support via e-mail. After exchanging about three e-mails with them, they have declared me beyond their help. Ugh! I'm sure it's something simple that I'm not doing, but I just don't know what!

Recommendations for a wireless setup

I have a Mac Pro, but it doesn't have any Bluetooth or wireless access. I've been thinking about remedying this so I can use the laptop in the other room or on the couch or... well, y'know. Freedom.
The Mac Pro is attached to the internet via cable-modem setup.
What would folks recommend to make the Mac Pro a wireless server for the laptop?

After the keynote today, I would recommend purchasing the new Time Capsule which is also an Airport Base station as well as a 500 GB or 1 TB NAS and wireless networking router and storage. That Time Capsule and its wireless networking and storage is so much more necessary than a cute MBA.!
With that, you would hook it up to your cable modem and then ethernet to your MAC PRO that does not have its own wireless. Then you would have a new wireless and wired network which would allow your computers to talk to each other and the internet.
