Pdf handling

Hello
This might just be a 50% java issue, but Im wondering somewhat about using pdf in an iFrame in the browser.
What I want to do:
- Open a pdf stream with java
- Display that stream in a html/jsp page within a iFrame
Is there a way to display the pdf nicely without all kinds of menues etc?
I want the pdf among other thing in the browser.

- Open a pdf stream with java
- Display that stream in a html/jsp page within a
iFrameSeems Java-ish to me.
Try
http://www.pdfbox.org
It's an open source Java-PDF library and should allow you to read PDFs with Java. So as for displaying it, I would just run the applet itself from within the iFrame. This seems like a great idea, by the way. I absolutely hate having to launch Acrobat whenever I read a PDF online.

  • "Select default PDF handler" greyed out in Acrobat XI and Reader X

MIS just installed Acrobat XI for me, and now all PDFs from the web open in the Browser, which is not the way I usually operate.  I went to Preferences > General in both programs, and in both the "Select default PDF handler" option is greyed out.  Any suggestions?

Go to Edit-> prefrences-> Internet and Change the settings to open PDF In browser.

  • Change default PDF handler

I downloaded  a trial of Adobe Acrobat...didn't buy it.  Have Adobe Reader, but the default is now Adobe Acrobat.  How do I change it so I can download to/with Adobe Reader?

In either app, choose Edit > Preferences > General > Select default PDF handler.

  • PDF handler issue reading Schwab brokerage statements

I cannot read my brokerage statements on my Schwab account. I can read various PDF files (on my Schwab account), but when I click on a brokerage statement, it opens up a new screen flashes for a second and reports done, but the screen is blank. No error message. A part of the link name has "PDFHandler" in it; whereas, when I choose other PDFs to view, it does not. I have Windows 7 Adobe 10 and as mentioned in other threads went into Adobe Reader and set it as the default PDF handler (it was the only thing available in the pulldown BTW). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks for the quick response, Bill. On your hunch that the browser
might make a difference,  I tried clicking on the same sites' .pdf files in
Chrome and IE, rather than my normal Firefox browser. They opened on-screen
without a problem.  Looks like I may have a Java plugin problem in Firefox,
rather than an AA XI issue.  Also looks like Windows Vista supports AA XI
    without a problem.

  • Many of our users can't open PDFs.  We have to select Reader as the Default PDF Handler once a day.

What was once an infrequent problem, has become a chronic issue since some changes were made to Group Policy by an AD admin.  We've disabled all the GPs that pertain to Acrobat, but we're still having to log into users' workstations to remind Acrobat Reader that it is the Default PDF Handler (as found under Edit>Preferences>General.)
As I mentioned above, this used to happen occassionally, and I'm not really sure why.  We use versions 9.5, X and XI, and all of them have exhibited this problem in the past and currently.  If we could find a network-wide solution to this issue (rather than having to log into scores of individual workstations every day), we would be really happy.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

We think we've found the answer.  Apparently, an admin from six years ago had created an ironically named batch file called "Adobe Fix.bat" which called a login script to put the following registry key on every computer:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Acrobat\Exe]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Reader 8.0\\Reader\\AcroRd32.exe\""
Since C:\\Program Files\\Adobe\\Reader 8.0\\Reader\\AcroRd32.exe doesn't exist on any computer anymore, no PDFs would load until you told Acrobat what software to use to open them.
Removing this script should fix the problem.

  • After installing Reader XI, why can't Acrobat be set as default PDF handler?

I've tried everything I know, including a clean boot.  Every time I try to set Win7 to open PDFs with Acrobat (Version 8.3.1), it sets it back to Reader XI.
From inside Reader/Preferences/General/Select Default PDF Handler, Reader XI is the only option.  Acrobat isn't listed.

Unfortunately there is no option post installation with Acrobat 8 to change PDF ownership. However this is possbile Acrobat 10 onwards. But yYou can choose to make Reader XI the default PDF handler during installation itself.
    1. Go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs, select the entry "Adobe Reader XI" and Un-install.
    2. Then visit link : http://get.adobe.com/reader/enterprise/ and choose the Reader which you need.
    3. When you double click the EXE, then a screen will come showing extraction of files. As soon as extraction ends, installation will begin and you will be presented with following screen :
    4. Uncheck the checkbox which says "Make Adobe Reader my default PDF viewer"
Acrobat 8 will remain default PDF viewer on your machine.

  • Default PDF handler

    Hi,
I've installed Adobe's Reader and Acrobat Professional on my Mac, and one of them is now the default handler for PDFs on Safari. How can I revert to the default settings?
    Thanks

    Hi,
If you want Safari to open PDF's go to a PDF file on your hard drive then right or control click that file then click Get Info.
Click the pop up menu next to: Open with
Select Safari or your default PDF reader.
    Click: Change All

  • Adobe PDF plugin a no show - PDFs handled by Safari?

Even though the AdobePDFViewer.plugin is in the Internet Plug-ins folder and is up to date, PDFs in Safari seem to be handled differently. You get them open with a floating dingus with 2 zooms, a save to download button, and a view in Preview button. I have my PDFs set to open in Adobe Reader and when I press that button they open in Adobe Reader and not Preview. And the floating dingus the second time sometimes appears, sometimes not. Sometimes it only appears if you click and move the mouse over the bottom of the window. Sometimes clicking the window and moving around anywhere works. Very odd.

I don't know how my experience will compare to yours, as our environments are quite a bit different.
Using a G4 PPC running OS 10.4.11, I found Safari will load PDFs in a browser window much faster without the Adobe Plug-in.
For example, if I use Safari to open:
    http://www.flu.gov/professional/business/smallbiz.pdf
with the Adobe PDF browser plug-in, it takes about 70 seconds on my machine. (If downloaded, this is a 3.7MB file.)
But after removing the AdobePDFViewer.plugin from my Library>Internet Plug-Ins folder, the same page loads in Safari in about 22 seconds - much better, but still far from great.
With a so-so DSL connection, I generally find it to be faster to download the PDF file and open it with either Adobe Reader or Preview, rather than trying to view it within a Safari window.
If anyone knows of a faster way to open PDFs within Safari, I would love to hear about it.
(BTW, I've already tried the "PDF Browser Plugin" from Schubert|it and it's no faster than Safari's native handling of PDFs - plus my scroll wheel won't work - and, if you're running 10.6 it won't work right, either.)

  • Big PDF Handling: Acrobat vs. Preview

I had the occasion to help out at the polls today. A coworker had a G4 iBook and a data CD with all the registered voters in our county on it, including name, address, precinct numbers, voting location, and birthdate. There were about 400,000 voters on the PDF file contained on this CD. We used it to determine if voters were on the master registration list and also to find out a voter's precinct number and voting place if he came in with just an ID and no voter registration card.
Anyway, my coworker only had Preview on his iBook, no Acrobat. Preview handled the big PDF but scrolling sometimes got brutally slow with lots of beachballing. We tried using the search feature in Preview and also Spotlight but had little success with that.
My question, would Acrobat have been as good, a little better, or way better to use if he had had it on his iBook? What else could we have done to improve our handling of the PDF?
P.S. We did drag the PDF off of the CD to the Desktop so that we were working from the HD and not the optical drive.
    Thanks,
    Steve M.

    HI Steve,
"Preview handled the big PDF but scrolling sometimes got brutally slow with lots of beachballing. We tried using the search feature in Preview and also Spotlight but had little success with that."
Much of this depends on the size of the CD file, if there was sufficient hard disk space on the iBook, RAM, and if the owner of the iBook has performed any maintenance. If you saw the beach ball just viewing text in a PDF file, I'm more inclined to think that it was the iBook causing the slow down, rather then whether or not it was viewed with Adobe Acrobat or the Mac's Preview.
I use both Preview and Acrobat on my 60GB iBookG4, but I keep a lean machine plus I do maintenance weekly. Both Preview and Acrobat function as they should without the beachball syndrome..

  • Safari pdf handling - Preview?

Is it possible to set Safari to use a Preview plug-in to read pdf files? I can find the list of installed plug-ins (Help: Installed Plug-ins) but I can't see any way to edit them. I don't care if Preview opens the files within Safari, or if Preview just starts up and displays the pdf files in its own window.
At the moment, when I click a pdf file link within Safari, Safari doesn't know what to do because it can't find Adobe Acrobat Reader. (I recently un-installed Adobe Acrobat Reader because I got tired of Adobe's shenanigans.)
    Thanks!

My copy of Safari is behaving the same way following the installation of Adobe CS3...
...before the CS3 install I could click on PDFs within Safari and they would open with Preview. Now when I click on a PDF within Safari it won't open and I am asked to locate the PDF viewer application (I forget the exact language).
I am unable to choose preview by browsing through the dialog box so I'm stuck without a PDF viewer.
FWIW, there are no adobe plugins in my Library\Internet Plugins Folder
    and
Preview opens PDFs automatically from within the finder, just not from within Safari.

  • Oracle utilities for PDF handling?

    Hello,
Considering that Reports generates PDF:s, are there any Oracle utility jars that would help me extract a java BufferedImage (or such) from a page in an existing PDF document? I am trying to write a FAX destype but the fax interface wants an Image and tools I have tried (pdfbox, the old acrobat bean, jpedal) are all incomplete or horribly expensive :-/

But Java stored procedures are an "Oracle-way" of doing things. In fact, it's one of the easier Oracle ways of doing things (note that a lot of the newer built-in packages are Java stored procedures).
It is hard to suggest better ways of doing things when we don't understand why the easiest options are off the table. I'd argue rather strenuously that a Java stored procedure would be the best way for most folks. If you're a .Net shop with Oracle on Windows, you could also write a .Net stored procedure that would do the same thing. Or you could use DBMS_SCHEDULER. You could also write a Java stored procedure that called out to the command line, though I'm hard pressed to imagine that as a better solution to just writing a Java stored procedure...

  • How does a pdf handle multiple SWFs at runtime?

If a pdf has multiple SWFs in it, that get turned on and off multiple times, does each one run in its own instance of the Flash Player?
If not, can they run separetely without problems?
Can one SWF run for a while and then another SWF run, followed by a return to the first SWF to resume part way through or does it start it off from frame 1 again?

When a Rich Media Annotation is activated it forms a new sandboxed instance of the FP runtime, so you can have several RMAs active at the same time without too many problems (aside from things like stealing focus from one another). They cannot see each other's libraries and you cannot share data directly between them as the LSO system is disabled, but basic string-form data can be tunneled via AcroJS if you know what you're doing.
When an RMA deactivates, everything is wiped - Acrobat / Reader do not automatically store any 'resume data' but you can create a home-made resume system by coding the SWF to export/import state information to the PDF. You would have to ensure everything needed to 'resume' is packaged into the state data string, then read and parse it each time the SWF loads. Again, that data packet is not visible to other content.

  • Unable to make Acrobat X the default handler/opener of PDF files on a Windows 8 laptop with Acrobat Reader also installed.

I have a user with a Windows 8 Sony Vaio laptop with Microsoft Office 2013 Professional, Acrobat X Standard, and Acrobat Reader installed. Another program on his system requires Acrobat Reader so we cannot just remove that and keep it off the system. Regardless of what he does to set the default program to open PDF files with, when he opens a PDF file it always opens it in Acrobat Reader and not Acrobat itself. We have re-associated it and set the default program handling repeatedly and have also tried complete uninstall and reinstall of both Acrobat and Acrobat Reader which had no effect on this. At this point I am of the opinion that this is a bug and the file association is being overridden somewhere in the registry besides the file association entries. Any help is appreciated.

The only supported way to set the default handler (besides the Wizard and cmd line properties) is via the UI at Edit > Preferences > General > Default PDF Handler. The installer has to be invoked and many registry entries get touched during the switching process.
You should also verify your dot versions of the product support Windows 8: Overview — Acrobat and Adobe Reader Release Notes.
Finally, while you Acrobat 10 should work with Reader 11, try reverting to Reader 10 (that should be your last resort).

  • PDF Preview Handler will not open 1 file

    Hi,
I have Office 2013 and Acrobat XI, the PDF Handler works fine on all my files except one.
Through our online ordering, I get a confirmation email with E-Order.pdf with every confirmation, worked for a while and now gives me the
"This file cannot be previewed because of an error with the following previewer
    PDF Preview Handler
To open this file in its own program, double-click it."
If I go to any other PDF attachment it works fine.
    Thanks
    Gregg

    Hi Anubha,
Yes I do have the latest version of Acrobat 11, 11.0.10.
I have tried turning the PDF Handler off and back on, that didn’t fix it.
I also installed Reader 11 and that did not fix it.
If there is something else I can try please let me know.
