PEI - checking a user id against the database

Question

Hi,
I am in the process of building a custom login implementing the PEI framework.
I want to check the username a user has entered against the portal database i.e. verify the username actually exists and then check if it belongs to a particular group.
I am a little stuck on how to do this so would appreciate any pointers or sample code to help me.

Below is code from my PEI (Java) to do exactly what you want:
