"perfect pixel experience"

I read that Apple is now claiming that anything you see on the new iMac will be a "perfect pixel experience." Does this mean that Apple is now taking a zero-tolerance approach to even one dead or stuck pixel? In the past, Apple would tolerate a few imperfect pixels on the screen by claiming that this was normal, but now that Apple is claiming perfection, it seems that Apple's policy has changed.

Well, even a bad lawyer could argue the semantics. Are they saying "perfect pixels" experience or perfect "pixel experience?" I can certainly see either one. And, a certain amount of hyperbole is permitted in advertising copy. The KB article on the other hand suggests that it's quite possible that some displays will have minor anomalies, and that Apple would replace a screen when the number of anomalies were excessive. The lawyers will have to argue how many anomalies count as "excessive."
One thing I know from hearing so many ads is that the word "perfect" (or "parfect" for you Brits out there) is bandied about way too much. I even hear "more perfect" and "most perfect" in some ads. I suppose I should be happy they don't say "perfecter" and "perfectest."

  • Computer issue - green/purple pixels in videos before and after rendering and bios shutdown

I built a new desktop for editing video during the summer.  In the past week or two I've encountered some serious issues.
    Ex. A:  http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8476/8374160517_0bb791f218_c.jpg
While  editing in Premiere or AE CS6 I've been getting these weird lines appear randomly.  If I close the program and re-open it, it'll disappear, and sometimes reappear at another point in the timeline. Really strange.  I also have active backgrounds enabled and green or purple patches of pixels will sometimes appear.  If I tell windows to go to the next background, the pixels usually go back to normal.
    BIOS blue screen shutdown
I  could be watching vimeo or youtube or doing video editing and suddenly  get a shut down error.  It also happened while playing the CRYSIS demo,  although I had a perfectly smooth experience until that happened.
    Here are my specs:
    Windows 7 home premium
    MSI 7751 mobo
    Intel i7-3770S 3.10GHz
    16GB G.Skills Ripjaw RAM
    NVIDIA 560 Ti 1GB
    500w PSU corsair
    WD 1TB caviar black HD
    Asus xonar audio card
    128 GB sandisk SSD
Do  you guys think this is a graphics card or PSU issue?  My computer is next to a metal cabinet, but has plenty of room for air ventilation. The graphics card and CPU temps have generally been between 30-40 degrees  Celsius, and always under 50 C (even when rendering), so I doubt overheating is an issue.   Checked with HWMonitor.
ESET Nod 32 doesn't detect any viruses

    >suddenly get a shut down error
What is the text of the error message?
Read Bill Hunt on BSOD http://forums.adobe.com/thread/772169
My best GUESS is that you have a power supply problem
    >NVIDIA 560 Ti 1GB - 500w PSU corsair
According to some notes I made http://www.pacifier.com/~jtsmith/GPU.HTM the 560Ti draws 170 watts
Use the Power supply calculator http://extreme.outervision.com/index.jsp (the PRO version has more options) to determine your power supply needs
Even if the calculator says you are "somewhere" under 500 watts, you MAY simply have a "weak" power supply

  • Error in installing Experience Manager.

    Hi all,
    I have installed -
    1)MDEX
    2)Platform Services
    3)CAS
    4)Document Converter.
    5)Deployment Template.
    6)Oracle Endeca Guided Search 2.1.2 for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)      V31161-01
Everything is installed in a single local machine. The Endeca Reference Application is running fine also.
But when I am trying to install Experience manager -
Oracle Endeca Experience Manager 2.1.2 for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)-
    xmgrworkbench_2.1.2.618087_x86_64pc-win32 -
it is showing the following error.
"All other Workbench installations must be uninstall before installing Workbench.
Please uninstall all other versions of Workbench before running this installer."
    My question is -
There is two components in https://edelivery.oracle.com-
    a)Oracle Endeca Experience Manager 2.1.2 for Microsoft Windows x64 (64-bit)      V31162-01      80M
b)Oracle Endeca Experience Manager Extensions 2.1.2 for Generic Platform      V31169-01      71M
Which one I have use to avail the experience manager's functionality (Template creation etcs ).
Or I have to use both the versions ?
What are the components need to be installed to work perfectly with experience manager .?
    Regards,
    Hoque

Hi Hoque. I know it is a bit confusing and we are working to simplify things in future releases, but you will want to install
    either
    Oracle Endeca Guided Search 2.1.2
    or
    Oracle Endeca Experience Manager 2.1.2
but you do not need both.
Oracle Experience Manager includes Endeca Workbench and the Experience Manager tool and is the option you'll use when the deployment includes a license for Oracle Endeca Experience Manager. The Oracle Endeca Guided Search package includes Endeca Workbench and the Rule Manager tool and will be used for deployments that do not include Experience Manager.
If you're starting a new project, I recommend starting with 3.1 instead.

  • New 27" i7, left speaker blown, any ideas?

    Hi Everyone,
This is my first post, but I'm a longtime lurker
I fretted and worried over the arrival of my beautiful new 27" iMac, hoping it wouldn't suffer any of the issues I've been reading about on the forums. I breathed a sigh of relief when it came last Tuesday (2 days early) with perfect glass, perfect pixels, quiet hard drive, etc. I loaded all of my software from scratch, brought over all of my files, started up Final Cut and was ready to go.
Then I noticed wacky audio. It seems something is wrong with my left speaker. Even the slightest amount of bass makes the speaker put out horrible "vibrating and rattling" noises, sounds like the speaker is blown. Sounds bad across all programs (not isolated to Final Cut) but headphones sound fine. Opened up System Preferences and moved the balance all the way to the right, everything sounds perfect, but if I move the balance to the left it is very very noticeable.
I looked around on the message boards, found someone with an older iMac with the same problem, someone had suggested trashing audio preferences and zapping the PRAM, I did both of those. No luck.
I have an appointment tomorrow morning at the Genius Bar, we'll see what they say. I want them to fix +this machine+, not give me a new or refurb. Two months ago I took my 18 month old 17" MacBook Pro in to replace the graphics card (under warranty) and they ended up giving me a refurb (though they said previously they wouldn't). I had had a dead pixel and a small scratch on the top of the case and suddenly both of those items had disappeared! So that was happy for me in the end.
So, does anyone out there have any advice to give me before I lug my iMac to the Apple Store tomorrow morning? Are they likely to want to give me a new unit or fix this one? Any magic words I should say to the Genius (besides please)? Anyone else out there have any experience with this same problem?
Any thoughts, ideas or moral support would be appreciated! Thanks!

The guy at the Genius Bar was pretty quick to agree with me that the speaker was blown. I was a little worried because the Apple Store was quite loud, I wasn't sure if he would be able to hear the speaker noise (he said he would take the iMac to the back if necessary).
I knew the "bad sound" only happened when you played music or sound with a little bit of bass, so I planned ahead and created a "Bad Speaker Mix" in iTunes in preparation for my appointment. I pulled about 8 songs that sound particularly horrible on the speaker. The first thing the tech guy did was open up iTunes and start playing random songs, but he wasn't replicating the noise. Then I pointed out the Bad Speaker Mix and that did the trick.
The Genius said that if this was an "in-stock" build, they would just give me a new machine. But, I have a i7 (and a 2 TB drive) so the only option is to have my machine repaired. They didn't have the part in stock, it needed to be ordered. I was allowed to take my computer home, they'll call me when the part has arrived (should be here today or tomorrow). He said the repair will be done in-store and should take a couple of days. He also mentioned that they repair computers 7 days a week, so there's no slow-down in the repair system.
Overall, I was very pleased with the whole experience. The appointment took about 10 minutes, everyone was extremely friendly and explained the repair process quite well. In the end it sounds like I'll only be without my computer for a few days (I was happy to hear they do small repairs like this in the store, less chance of shipping accidents and quicker turnaround time)
Big Ben, it sounds like your speaker problem is a bit different than mine, are you able to replicate it easily? Just keep in mind that these Genius Bar appointments are fast, so planning ahead helps you out!
I'll post again once my computer is all fixed up, good luck Big Ben!

  • Macbook to CRT (RGB SCART)

    Hi,
I have a Macbook (13inch-mid 2010) and I'm wanting to connect to a SONY Trinitron CRT 4:3 with a RGB scart on the rear. So I can use MAME OS X and get those arcade perfect pixels
If I get a mini dvi to vga then a vga to scart cable would it work?
Mini dvi to vga>vga scart>RGB connector on tv
    OS 10.6.8
    Kind regards,
    Retro Gamer

I never even heard of SCART until this post and had to look it up in wiki to find out what it is.  That wiki article had a reference to this article.  And if what it says is true, no, it will not work.  The pertinent comment is near the bottom of that article:
A video projector with only VGA style RGB connector might be a good candidate to try, but a normal PC monitors are out of questions (in SCART the HSYNC frequency is around 15.6 kHz but VGA monitors want at least 31 kHz). Video projectors can usually handle the HSYNC rate used in normal video (15.6 kHz) without problem even on their VGA connector (check technical data or tech support to make sure of that).
...or make that a big maybe it won't work.  Since your monitor uses that SCART, not VGA, you would think that the higher frequency signal put out by the macbook would be more than what is required by the monitor.  So in the end, I am not sure.  The "fun" part about connectors/adapaters is stringing them together and seeing if they work.  These adapters aren't too expensive so you might as well give it a try.

  • I've been using my Air since Sept. 19th, but I seem to have some bugs...

But it SEEMS a little buggy to me—OS X itself; especially in comparison to Windows (please don't start a debate—I'm pro-Mac here, I much prefer it, please believe that. You'll see when you read further ahead). I adore the computer more than any I've ever used, since updating to Mavericks my battery lasts 16 hours long which is just UNBELIEVABLE. Yet then there are the annoyances that don't happen with Windows...
Safari really bugs up a lot. So do a few other of the apps. Yeah, Apple has apps that actually work, whereas most of Windows stuff is bloatware; but I do get bugs with Gmail on Mail, Safari slowing down and having other graphical problems where the bottom or top of the browser won't show completely, all of the wi-fi problems, and now with Mavericks there are more. The biggest one is Spotlight failing. Others, SOME fixed [partially] with workarounds, are the rainbow cursor showing up all the time on Safari causing force restarts [partially fixed; still have to force start sometimes but no more rainbow-freezing, just unable to two-finger scroll], Safari Web Content taking up 30-100% CPU [fixed with workaround and fixed completely since Mavericks], and the computer itself is, while charging (or plugged in via USB; haven't checked the other ways), actually seemingly giving off some type of static vibration.
I LOVE Spotlight and it not opening kills me. I didn't do a fresh install with Mavericks so I'm unsure what would've changed. I did the update it offered me from my computer.
I'm really new to Macs, having only received my very first on the 19th of September, but I just adore it. The trackpad is literally the best thing ever invented... ever. Coming from using an iPad for a couple hundred days without using a computer at all, the change to using the trackpad gestures and the OS X ecosystem was very, very easy for me. I'm truly amazed at how similar OS X is to iOS. How the heck did they manage that?
Anyway, realistically, the best bet is to change to Chrome or a different browser that may mess up and cause less bugs and memory leaks (or whatever it is that Safari was doing), but I actually like Safari and how it links up with my iPhone and iPad.
Mainly what I'm asking here is are you guys having these problems? Also, should I stick with Safari? Is there another way to use iCloud with a different browser? Everything I have is Apple, so it's just nice having that one nice, central, similar ecosystem, without annoying and time-consuming workarounds. I love how Apple is natively configured to work with SO much (it's notification center is absolutely amazing. I think it's so cool)
Should I really go into one of those "get to know your Mac" sessions at the Genius Bar? I'm not a computer moron entirely.
P.S. iTunes doesn't like to play iTunes Radio. It'll stop playing and just "load" a song continually. I'll have to skip the song for it to restart playing and eventually I'll have to use all the skips for my hour and then I'll have to switch to a new station and back to get it to start playing again. I actually use iTunes Radio for a good 14-15+ hours a day (I don't sleep very much) on the Air, so this gets rather annoying. I can't recall whether or not it does this on my iPhone, which I also always use whenever I go out the door.
Needless to say, I'm never going back to Windows; but are any of you having these same—the whole plethora of—problems that I am? It's certainly, hilariously, not enough to send me back to Windows, but... I'd prefer as "close to perfect" an experience as possible. Is this it? Thank you!

  • Did Apple fix the video quality issue in iMovie '09?

I am a casual video editor and iMovie 08 had the perfect user experience / functionality for what I want to do.
However, the known video quality issue (throwing away interlaced scan lines) made the result unacceptable since I archive our family video on DVDs. I have been forced to use iMovie HD for that reason. I have tried tricks such as converting the original DV files to AIF and deinterlace prior to import into iMovie08 but that did not seem to work either.
So does anyone know if Apple fixed the video quality issue in iMovie '09.
MESSAGE TO APPLE IF YOU ARE LISTENING:
Please fix the video quality in iMovie09 if not already. Yes, the quality is ok for YouTube or Internet video but for those of us who want simple editing to archive our family video we cannot accept poor video quality. Dropping an interlace field effectively halves the vertical resolution. Thank you.

Please explain this in more detail when you say Adaptive Deinterlacer. Are you talking about another program? If so, what program and what are the specific steps.
Also, sounds like you are recommending imovie09. By saying to do the above, are you saying imovie09 still causes you too loose significant quality like imovie08? Are you saying you can use imovie08 or imovie09 with these steps to get high quality video or just imovie09? I guess I just need more specifics on how you do what you are describing and how imovie09 fits into this versus imovie08. I joined this whole discussion trying to figure out if upgrading imovie09 made a difference regarding the whole quality issue. I know it has more features, but I am more concerned about he quality of the video right now. Thanks.

  • I don't want any color profile at all!

    Hi,
When I start my MacBook Pro up, the color looks great on the built in screen and on my secondary monitor but, within a few seconds, the color profile for my secondary monitor loads and it becomes way over saturated. No amount of adjustment of the monitor or calibration through System Preferences can get me back to fleeting glimpse of perfection I experience in those first few seconds.
I've tried loading all the different profiles available when "Show profiles for this display only" is unchecked to no avail.
So my question is: How can I stop the color profile from loading? or: How should I go about getting hold of the color profile that's in operation for those first few seconds?
    Thank you.

Look in the "Seeing" tab of "Universal Access" system preference and make sure the "Enhance contrast" slider is all the way to the left (Normal).

  • Thinkpad 10 - stuttering ui

    Hi,
I have a Thinkpad 10 with 64gb and 2 gb ram, wifi only with win 8.1 pro.
Occasionally when it wakes from sleep all the animations in the ui are stuttering, as if there is no gpu acceleration. It happens from the lock screen and all animations thereafter in both desktop and modern ui. The lock screen sliding away and app opening animations are jittery, like it is running at 15 fps or something. It is not slow or laggy, just not smooth. The only way to fix this is to put the device back to sleep and wake it up again. Sometimes I have to repeat multiple times before everything is smooth again. There are no unusual processes in task manager or anything like that. I have updated to latest drivers. It feels like a driver issue though, like the gpu is not fully awake after sleep and needs a couple tries at waking up or something. I don't know if that even makes sense but was just wondering if anybody has experienced the same issue. Any advise would be much appreciated.
Because it does not slow down the pc it is not a big enough concern for me to send it in to lenovo for repair but it is an annoyance as I have to sleep-wake the device multiple times. Also, I would just like to mention that I have done a full factory reset and the problem persists.
Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Thanks for your input. I have long sonce deleted whatever bloat I recognize but I am still having the issue. It feels like the whole UI is not hardware accelerated when i wake the device. This does not always happen. It seems to be random. So every time I wake the device I may have a perfectly smooth experience or a stuttering one. I've also noticed that when it is stuttering, if i sleep/wake multiple times it goes away, or I use it for a little while then I sleep/wake and it goes away with one attempt. Again, the performance is not slow. It is just the animations that are not smooth.

  • Error -48 when trying to restore my iphone

I tried to update my iphone to software version 1.02 and was told my phone needed to be restored. I am tryint to update on my g4 sawtooth desktop which I normally dont sync my iphone on as my macbook is out for repairs at the moment. The g4 synced my information ok but when I tried to update I was told I would need restore my phone. After iTunes downloaded the restore image I get [+There was a problem downloading the iPhone software for the iPhone "iPhone". An unkown error occurred (-48). Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later.+] Obviously I am on the internet and my internet connection is fine. My desktop is connected to the airport base station with cat5 so I know its not a wireless connectivity problem. Anybody know of a way to resolve this?

I took my iPhone to an apple store and had it restored. Now I get +iTunes could not connect to the iPhone "iPhone" because an unknown error occurred (0xE8000025).+ I can no longer get my iphone to sync with my computer for the life of me. I've restarted the phone, deleted the itunes preference lists, uninstalled and reinstalled itunes and still get the same error. So what has been an almost perfectly beautiful experience up until now has turned into frustrating beyond description.

  • No Apple apps working after latest security update

Just restarted after software update down loaded the latest security and safari 3 updates and now most apple apps do not work! Other apps work fine but I have no mail, no safari, no software update, no itunes, no ichat, The only Apple apps that still work are iphoto, ical, Pages, dictionary. Please please any ideas as I'm devastated.

I keep a clean system & always have, i never download dodgy apps or make system tweeks, i backup daily - yet it happened.
Unfortunately, events beyond your control can corrupt your system. For instance, power failures can corrupt files, as can strong electrical or magnetic interference, including from cosmic rays. Even perfect RAM experiences "soft" (one-time) errors at very low but nonzero rates (like 1 bit "flipped" spontaneously per GB per month). The chances of that corrupted RAM data causing a permanent system malfunction are remote but again not zero. (This is why "mission critical" systems frequently use error-correcting RAM.)
Moreover, it is not always obvious if apps are "dodgy" or not. Several very popular, highly rated system behavior modifiers use "haxies" that can interfere with updates, but their makers are not always forthcoming about their dependence on them. Anything that uses "APE" (Application Enhancer) falls into this class. Its author swears that it is benign. OTOH, several user support agencies (including Apple) will not support a system with evidence of its presence in logs, so decide for yourself.
Beyond that, many system level changes & additions users make to the UNIX core of the OS have the potential of causing mis-operation. Basically, anything that you do in Terminal that requires root or sudo privileges can cause problems since that allows so much greater access to system level files. For this reason, it is a good idea to apply such changes after reinstalling & updating the OS, ideally with a pristine, unmodified version of the startup volume as a backup in case of error or unexpected behavior.

  • GIF file with transparent background (white spots)

Hii. I've been having a problem. I was trying to make a signature earlier with gif on photoshop cs5. I tried making it with a transparent background and when I put it up on the forum, it gave me white spots. It's not noticeable with a white background as the spots are white, but with another color background, it would show. Can someone tell me why?
-- this is the image i made with a transparent background. and because it didn't work out, I decided to not use a transparent background and used a color of the background of the forum which was off gray. I know i have erased all of the white spots in the transparent file becuase it seems perfectly fine in the one with a gray background.
Can someone fill me in on as to what i am doing wrong?

Gif only supports 1 bit transparency: either on or off. The edges of your artwork are anti-aliased, and these cannot be converted neatly without setting the matte colour in the save for web dialog.
With Gif you have two option: either live with the coloured fringe surrounding your artwork (and it will only display correct when the background color matches the matte colour, or remove every single anti-aliased pixel, effectively creating a perfect sharp pixel edge.
Neither options are great: with the first option you always run the risk of ugly artifacts around the edges when the background color does not match, and with a perfect pixel edge it may look somewhat jaggy.
Solution: avoid Gif, and instead save as a fully transparent PNG. File size-wise not the greatest option, because Photoshop cannot optimize a PNG file properly. To do that, load up Color Quantizer, and open the PNG file. Then set the number of colours to about 256~512 (should be more than enough in your case), and save.
    Done!
    Get Color Quantizer here: http://x128.ho.ua/color-quantizer.html
If certain areas in your artwork look less than ideal, make use of quality mask/brush in CQ.

The quality is questionable, and text when viewed at a short distance does become un-readable, although, viewed from a distance, the touch outputs the PERFECT browsing experience in rich colour, and text with anti-alias.
Also, it is to e noted that the old composite and component cables are still being sold on the online Apple store, alongside the new and improved one which support the ipod Touch. The old cable sets DO NOT support the iPod Touch even though the site may say they do. I reported this to Apple Onine and they changed the old cable set compatibility pictures to not feature the ipod touch anymore.
On the subject of accessories for the toouch, you may also be inclined to know that I have confirmation from Apple that the current 'camera conector/adapter' they are selling on the Apple Online Store, DOES support transfer of photos from your camera to the iPod Touch. And for £20, its a spiffy gadget to have in your pocket.

  • Cannot access keychain. Passwords are all correct, "security code" sent to old cellphone number. Impossible to contact apple support.

I've been trying to access my iCloud's keychain for weeks now. Updating Yosemite somehow made my 13'' Macbook pro "log off" from the keychain and when I try to reconnect to the keychain, I am asked my iCloud password and then my security code, which I both enter successfully.
Then I am unexplainably asked to enter a "security code" sent to an old cellphone number of mine that is now deactivated. I click on "I don't have access to this number" and I am redirected to Apple's confusing silly-willy contact support website and find out that, since I am in China, there is NO POSSIBLE WAY for me to contact support.
Bottom line is, even though I have FULL CREDENTIALS to access the entirety of my iCloud's features(my passwords are all correct!!), I am stuck trying to access my keychain because of an unreasonable unsolicited and unwanted "security" measure, combined with a NON-EXISTING costumer support for China.
Apple is such a huge waste of time, I own an iPhone, a Macbook pro and a magic mouse, but one thing I'm sure of is, I will never ever buy anything else from this company again, because it just PRETENDS to sell the "perfect costumer experience".
