Perform URL Encoding in a Text String

I need to be able to convert some characters ("/", ":", "@", " ") in a few text strings (SentDate, SentTime, EmailAddress) so that the strings can be incorporated into a URL that will be passed to FileMaker Pro Unlimited.
SentDate is currently "2/22/2006" but I need to replace the "/" with "%2F" to get "2%2F22%2F2006"
SentTime is currently "12:56:32 PM" but I need to replace the ":" with "%3A" and the " " with "%20" to get "12%3A56%3A32%3A%20PM"
EmailAddress is in the format "[email protected]" but I need to replace "@" with "%40" to get "first%40last.com".
I've tried using ACME Script Widgets' ACME Replace command but it only seems to work with the first replace; it hangs my script on subsequent replaces.
Does anyone have a handler to substitute characters in a string with a group of characters like this? It's driving me nuts and I can't figure it out...
Thanks in advance,
Robert

Hi Robert.
try this
set {SentDate, SentTime, EmailAddress} to {"2/22/2006", "12:56:32 PM", "[email protected]"}
set SentDate to findAndReplace("/", "%2F", SentDate)
set SentTime to findAndReplace(":", "%3A", SentTime)
set EmailAddress to findAndReplace("@", "%40", EmailAddress)
return {SentDate, SentTime, EmailAddress}
on findAndReplace(tofind, toreplace, TheString)
set {ditd, text item delimiters} to {text item delimiters, tofind}
set t to text items of TheString
set text item delimiters to toreplace
set t to t as string
if tofind is ":" then
set text item delimiters to " "
set t to text items of t
set text item delimiters to "%20"
set t to t as string
end if
set text item delimiters to ditd
return t
end findAndReplace

  • URL encode a string before redirecting it

    I want to URL encode a string before I sendRedirect it.
    What must I do? I have tried this but it did not work.
    response.sendRedirect(response.encodeRedirectURL("showAddAMember?century=" + country + "&stte=" + state + "&city=" + city + "&course=" + course + "&coursename=" + coursename + "&messagename=" + messagename + "&TFM=" + worker + "&admin_type=" + admin_type)); The URLEncoder.encode is deprecated so I can not use it or it is not wise to do so. What must I do to URL encode a string before redirecting it. I have written a simple method which temporarily takes care of this for me, but I want to use the accepted standard. Please somebody tell what I must do.

    I want to URL encode a string before I sendRedirect
    it.
    What must I do? I have tried this but it did not
    work.
    response.sendRedirect(response.encodeRedirectURL
    ("showAddAMember?century=" + country + "&stte=" +
    state + "&city=" + city + "&course=" + course +
    "&coursename=" + coursename + "&messagename=" +
    messagename + "&TFM=" + worker + "&admin_type=" +
    admin_type)); response.encodeRedirectURL() and .encodeURL() do not replace unsafe URL characters; I'm assuming that's what you want happening; they're meant to encode the session id in the URL for session tracking.
    Quote from http://java.sun.com/j2ee/1.4/docs/api/javax/servlet/http/HttpServletResponse.html#encodeRedirectUrl(java.lang.String):
    Encodes the specified URL by including the session ID in it, or, if encoding is not needed, returns the URL unchanged. The implementation of this method includes the logic to determine whether the session ID needs to be encoded in the URL. For example, if the browser supports cookies, or session tracking is turned off, URL encoding is unnecessary.
    For robust session tracking, all URLs emitted by a servlet should be run through this method. Otherwise, URL rewriting cannot be used with browsers which do not support cookies.
    Like mentioned above, use the URLEncoder.encode() ( with two params ): http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.2/docs/api/java/net/URLEncoder.html#encode(java.lang.String,%20java.lang.String)

  • Reverse the url-encoded process

    Hi there,
    Is it possible to flash rebuild a string that as been
    url-encoded?
    Thanks,

    Hi David thanks for your reply.
    It seems that my problem is not url-encoded.
    I have a flash with a sendAndLoad vars to a coldfusion file.
    The coldfusion is suppose to return a XML object. Instead it
    returns a
    String because the XML special characters [ <, >, " ]
    are converted to
    [&lt;, &gt;, &quot;].
    I think this problem is because you can have a programming
    language based on
    tags directly written in coldfusion (also a programming
    language based on
    tags). Like when you write html formatting text in an xml
    structure. The xml
    structure will assume tags like <br/> as a child Node
    instead of a tag
    content.
    So I had to make some functions to replace special characters
    in a string.
    I don't agree with this solution, but it was the only thing I
    came up with.
    Thanks

  • How can I display an icon, instead of text string, as a validation prompt?

    My validate method inside my custom validator is like this:
    public void validate(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, Object value) {
      Pattern datePattern = Pattern.compile("(\\d{2})/(\\d{2})/(\\d{4})");
      Matcher dateMatcher = datePattern.matcher((String)value);
      if(!dateMatcher.find()){
        ((UIInput)component).setValid(false);
        FacesMessage message = new FacesMessage();
        String msg = "[" + value + "] invalid date";
        message.setDetail(msg);
        context.addMessage(component.getClientId(context), message);
        FacesMessage facesMsg = new FacesMessage(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_FATAL, "xx", "msg");
        throw new ValidatorException(facesMsg);
    }My JSP has this:
    <h:inputText id="test" value="#{projecthandler.test}">
    <f:validator validatorId="DateValidator" />
    </h:inputText>
    <h:message id="testErrorMessage" for="test"/>The <h:message> tag will kick in if the user has invalid data in the <h:inputText> field and clicks submit.
    When the page is regenerated, the user will see a text string reflecting what the issue is.
    However, instead of this, I would like to display an icon consisting of a red circle with an exclamation point.
    The user is supposed to click on the icon if they want more information. By clicking on the icon,
    the user will see a message box, with a description of the error.
    This is our standard for applications. I'm trying to put together a demo showing how an existing application
    would work in JSF, so I won't be able to talk others into using JSF, unless I can get the validation to display an
    icon instead of text.

    OK, I noticed a bug in my validate method. This is updated to fix the bug, and to include the recomendation about background-image:
      public void validate(FacesContext context, UIComponent component, Object value) {
        System.out.println("DateValidator.test.1");
        Pattern datePattern = Pattern.compile("(\\d{2})/(\\d{2})/(\\d{4})");
        Matcher dateMatcher = datePattern.matcher((String)value);
        System.out.println("DateValidator.test.1");
        if(!dateMatcher.find()){
          ((UIInput)component).setValid(false);
          FacesMessage message = new FacesMessage();
          String msg = "<span style='background-image: url(/error.gif)'/>";
          message.setDetail(msg);
          message.setSeverity(FacesMessage.SEVERITY_FATAL);
          context.addMessage(component.getClientId(context), message);
          throw new ValidatorException(message);
      }When I run this, the litteral string of "<span style='background-image: url(/error.gif)'/>" is printed as the message. It does not interpret this as a span tag with an image url.
    Can someone tell me what's going on?

  • Performance issue while using data type 'STRING'.

    Hello All,
    I have created a table for storing values of different features coming under a particular country. Since the last field 'Value field' have to hold text upto 800characters for some features, i have used the data type 'String' with character length specified as 1000. I am able to store values upto 1000characters using this. Also, the table has to hold lots and lots of value, and it will increase in future also.
    Since i have mentioned the data type as 'String', I have one doubt whether this will affect the performance. Because length of most of the values in my value field is less than 75characters and in some case only it will exceed 700characters. So, my question is whether the 'String' data type will allocate the length which am specifying in the table for each entries, though the values entering is less than the specified length.
    For example, if the value of my value field is 'Very High Complexity' which is of length 20characters, will the space allocation be reduced to 20 or will it be still 1000characters?
    Hope someone can clarify my doubt.
    Thanks In Advance,

    Hi Shino,
    Well it is possible to store using STRING or LCHR in the transparent tables. There are some underlyning facts here:-
    1. You can only have one such field per table
    2. You cannot view them in the se11 / se16 table content browser
    3. You will need to maintain an additional field for storing the length of the STRING or LCHR field.
    Regarding the performance:
    even though ABAP allows storing STRING or LCHR type fields in the transparent tables but as soon as the lenght of the field crosses 255 chars it is not advisable to store it directly in the transperant tables.
    You should store that field in the knowledge repository and only a pointer to the knowledge repository in the transperant table field.
    Anyways, Since you have only one field with such a requirement then i would suggest you use STRING instead of LCHR as in LCHR you will have to mandatorily assign a length (like 1000) so even if you are storing only 20 chars or 300 chars the system will reserve a slot of 1000 chars; this is not with string as in case of string everything would be dynamic.
    The result being that the reading time increases in case of LCHR.
    I Hop this answered your question.
    Regards,
    Sagar.

  • Cp4 AS3 - using Javascript to generate a text string

    I'm a complete Javascript beginner, so please forgive me if this is a stupid question!
    I need to generate a pseudo random text string. I'm using the unpatched version of Cp4, AS3, Internet Explorer 7
    I've had a look at Captivate.Dev.com and the w3schools site to try to understand how to pass variables & basic javascript, and this is what I've come up with:
    var objCP = document.Captivate;
    function GenerateCode(){
    var rngen = new Array(8);
    var tgits = new Array(8);
    var cdrtn="";
    var lpdx=0;
    var mulier=1;
    for (lpdx=0;lpdx<=5;lpdx++){
    rngen[lpdx]=(Math.floor(Math.random()*9)+1);
    mlier=mulier*(rngen[lpdx]);
    tgits[lpdx]=rngen[lpdx]+"";
    cdrtn=cdrtn+tgits[lpdx];
    rngen[6]=(mlier%17)%10;
    rngen[7]=(mlier%13)%10;
    for (lpdx=6;lpdx<=7;lpdx++)
    tgits[lpdx]=rngen[lpdx]+"";
    cdrtn=cdrtn+tgits[lpdx];
    objCP.cpEISetValue('MyJavascriptVariable', cdrtn);
    GenerateCode();
    I've created a user variable called MyJavascriptVariable , put the code above in the On Slide Enter, Execute Javascript window on the first slide, and on the second a simple caption box showing the variable contents.
    However, when I press F12 I get an orange playbar at the top of the window, and in the middle the preloader and the captionbox (without the return value) flickering. i.e. classic sign of wrong AS version.
    If I change to AS2 the movie progresses ok, but the value the caption reports back for MyJavascriptVariable is blank.
    I know my core code works correctly - if I use the w3school's tryit editor with the code after the function declaration up to the closing curly before the objcCP line, with an addeded document.write to show the variable it works fine.
    It's clearly something to do with the way I'm declaring/passing the function or the way Cp runs the javascript. But what?
    Any help greatfully appreciated!
    Thanks

    Hi Jon,
    You are right... it works great on the W3Schools site.  Although in Cp, you ran into quite an issue using the modulus operater (%).  Looks like Cp needs the encoded version of this operator which is (%25).  Also, if you're using Cp4, then when you go to set the caption, you want to use objCP.cpSetValue();  Cp5 uses cpEISetValue.  I also try to use single quotes when working with strings.
    Here's the updated code:
    var objCP = document.Captivate;
    function GenerateCode() {
    var rngen = new Array(8);
    var tgits = new Array(8);
    var cdrtn='';
    var lpdx = 0;
    var mulier=1;
        for (lpdx=0; lpdx<=5; lpdx++){
            rngen[lpdx]=(Math.floor(Math.random()*9)+1);
            mlier=mulier*(rngen[lpdx]);
            tgits[lpdx]=rngen[lpdx]+'';
            cdrtn=cdrtn+tgits[lpdx];
    rngen[6]=(mlier %25 17) %25 10;
    rngen[7]=(mlier %25 13) %25 10;
       for (lpdx=6; lpdx<=7; lpdx++){
            tgits[lpdx]=rngen[lpdx]+'';
            cdrtn=cdrtn+tgits[lpdx];
    objCP.cpSetValue('MyJavascriptVariable', cdrtn);
    GenerateCode();
    This looks like some really crazy math.
    Let me know if this helps.

  • GREP 'find/change' by list script: find a text string containing different para styles

    Hi
    I'm don't write scripts but do 'enjoy' copying, pasting and changing existing code/txt files.
    I have built a GREP find/change .txt that performs a large number of text edits/changes.
    But I'm left with an issue where I have paragraphs of text (styled earlier in the .txt file) that I'm unable to identify using GREP the usual way. I need to identify text in a particular paragraph style, followed by text in another paragraph style.
    Is it possible with GREP to create a search string to find: text styled with one paragraph style, ending with a paragraph return, and to include in that selection the following paragraph/s styled with another paragraph style?

    What do you mean by I would mark "changing" in "copying, pasting and changing"?
    Hi Steve,
    I mean I can see a way by modifying some existing code with "find...change" job
    1. set criteria to findGrep
    2. store findGrep() in an array
    3. check each found object if next paragraph matches some new criteria
    4. run changeGrep() if true

  • XML to URL Encoded (XSLT?)

    I have some data in a Document object and need to convert it to URL encoded format so, for example this:
    <share>
    <code>GSK</code>
    <price>13.34</price>
    </share>
    becomes something like...
    &code=GSK&price=13.34& ...
    I've been looking into doing this with XSLT but have run into difficulties. Do you think this is the best way of solving this problem, or is there another easier way?
    Thanks.

    I did something similar, basically takes a incoming XML file and output a HTML with certain link containing XML element value as query string. One of the things you have to be careful is, like Dr. Clap mentioned, to properly encode the value. I accompolished by using java extension in my XSL.
    For example:
    <xsl:stylesheet xmlns:xsl="http://www.w3.org/1999/XSL/Transform"
              xmlns:encode="java.net.URLEncoder"
              extension-element-prefixes="encode"

         <xsl:template match="/">
              <xsl:variable name="myURL" select="concat('?blah=', encode:encode($myValueFromXML))" >

  • URL Encoder not working in Netscape

    Hi All,
    I am using url encoding in my servlet for redirecting a request. The query string values has some spaces in them. The code I have used is shown below
    String mname = "Jason Perry"
    response.sendRedirect
    ("http://194.216.8.238:8081/merchant/merch.merchant?msgid=RP&mctid=1111242&totcp="+price.toString()+"&mname="+URLEncoder.encode(mname)+"&mtxnid=UY675432");
    Please note that 194.216.8.238:8081 is an IP of another server located outside our network.
    In Netscape the url is shown as http://194.216.8.238:8081/merchant/merch.merchant?msgid=RP&mctid=1111242&totcp=15
    &mname=Jason Perry&mtxnid=UY675432
    The space is not getting replaced with the plus.
    But I have observed that if the redirection is to the same server on which the servlet is running, it works fine.
    I am at loss as to why url encode is not working when routing the request to another server. I am using Netscape 4.77 .
    This is works in IE fine.
    Your inputs are appreciated.

    Yeah had this problem before, use the java.net.URLEncoder class:
    <%@ page language="java" import="java.net.URLEncoder"%>
