Permission options in Secure PDF

Hello,
I have created an application to create secure pdf (Encrypted PDF). I need to test whether the permission option generated for the pdf are correct or not.
How do I test that? Is there any reference document or test report which gives information about that?
For example if the resulting permisson value is say -3372 what should be the value of options in the "Document Restrictions Summary" and "Document security".
Which should be the software used to verify the permission option? In Adobe Acrobat Professional 7.0 and 9.0 the options are different. So is the case with Acrobat reader.
Thanks in advance.
Abhilash

The PDF Reference/ISO 32000-1 defines what the values means - that's authoritative.  Just compare the values in your file with the values in the standard.
You can, of course, choose to use Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat to see what they report in their UI - but that's not always a direct match to the file format.

  • Secured PDF from Illustrator CS6

I've been banging my head against the wall on this for awhile and I can't figure out what I'm missing. My script updates the filename and date on an Illustrator file and exports a secured PDF that will not allow anyone to edit or print the pdf. I can get it secured and but I can not figure out how to disable printing.
Here is my scritp as it stands:
    -- System Date
tell (current date) to get (it's month as integer) & "/" & day & "/" & (it's year as integer)
set mgDate to the result as string
    tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
      -- Filename
tell application "Adobe Illustrator" to set mgName to (name of document 1)
set theFilePath to file path of document 1 as string
set the oldDelims to AppleScript's text item delimiters
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ":"
set thePathItems to text items of theFilePath
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to the oldDelims
set parsedPath to items 1 thru ((count of items of thePathItems) - 1) of thePathItems
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to ":"
set parentPath to parsedPath as string
set AppleScript's text item delimiters to the oldDelims
set text item delimiters of AppleScript to ""
              if mgName contains ".ai" then
set aCount to count every character of mgName
set aCount to aCount - 3
set mgName to characters 1 thru aCount of mgName as string
set mgName to mgName as string
              end if
set savePDFPath to parentPath & ":" & mgName & ".pdf"
      -- Date
set contents of text frame "date" of document 1 to mgDate
set contents of text frame "filename" of document 1 to mgName
      --PDF Save Options
              set pdfSaveOptions to {class:PDF save options, compatibility:Acrobat 8, enable access:false, require doc password:true, require perm password:true, preserve editability:false, permission password:"Test", allow printing:pdf 40 print none, changes allowed:pdf 40 no changes}
save current document in file savePDFPath as pdf with options pdfSaveOptions
    end tell
It will create the pdf and it is secured but the printing is still enabled and I can't figure out how to disable it and help would be appreciated. I have included a screen shot of the security panel in Acrobat showing that printing is still allowed. All I want the end user to be able to do is view the pdf.

I tried with javascript and it didn't work either, I also found a post that went unanswered

  • How to optimize a secure PDF?

I want to put a password security on a PDF document and optimize it to be backwards-compatible to Acrobat 5.0, but am having problems.
I can't optimize unless I first save the file.
But after saving the secured PDF, it won't let me optimize. It tells me if I want to change it, I have to remove the security settings.
First I create the security settings, which won't take take effect until after I save. But it saves compatible to Acrobat 7.0.
I even tried after setting the security, to do a "Save as" with the optimized option, but it won't let me do that either.
    Any suggestions?
I have Acrobat Pro version 8. Why does it automatically save to Acrobat version 7.0? Is there a way to change the default saving option? I can't find that preference anywhere.

    OK. Got it.
I had the "Run command on" "files open in Acrobat" so all the Output options were grayed out.
I changed it to "Ask..." instead, and that enabled the Output Options.
Several more steps required for the "Ask..." option, but at least I can get what I want.
    Thanks.

  • Compare two secured PDF documents

    Hi,
I am using a licensed version of Adobe acrobat 11.0 professional. I have a requirement of comparing two secured PDF documents (which have the lock symbol displayed). But, the 'compare documents' option does not allow comparing two Secured PDFs. It gives a message 'This operation is not permitted'. Is there a way I can compare them ?
Earlier, I was using the version 5.0 in which we can compare secured documents without any problem.

Actually, its asking for a password when i tried to do that. So, is there a way to do it through the acrobat 11.0 tool itself ? (This feature of comparing secured documents was present in the versions 5.0 & 6.0. But, in later versions, it was removed)

  • Better Workflow for 20+ "versions" of a design, secure PDFs and Thumbs...

This will probably be a long one. Basically, I'm able to complete my tasks, but it is really time consuming and I can't help but feel like there is a better way. I'm hoping someone here can clue me in.
    THE PROJECT:
I sell digital downloads of a planner. There are several variations (with Holidays, without Holidays, weekly views, month only views etc.). Each variation is offered in several "designs". These are just different BG patterns. Once I've got them saved as a secure PDF (so no one can edit my design or copy/paste my resources) I have to create mockups of several views of each one. So right now, when I make a new background pattern that I want to intoduce to the set, I workflow ike this:
►Open 17 Indd files. One for each variation.
►Relink the BG image to the new design.
►Save 17 Indd files in a new folder with a new name indicating the new BG. (ie: Jan-13_Dec-14_Basic_Monthly_PurpleWeave.Indd)
►Export 17 indd files to PDF, going through the menu to change the security settings on each one.
This is a nightmare. It takes ~3 seconds to choose all the menus (not to mention typing in my security password twice), but then another ~5-10 to actually save the 144pg file. I can do nothing but sit and stare while it does this. I've found a couple of scripts that will export the PDFs from a whole folder for me, but since you can't save security settings in the PDF presets, I have to do it all by hand.
►Open 6-10 Photoshop Files for the mockups.
►Right Click "Edit Contents" for each smart object containing the PDF. (Usually 2 per PSD)
In order to allow the Transform>Distort for the placed PDF Smart Object, I have to place it, then "Create Smart Object". This means that the regular "Replace Contents" doesn't work. It does replace the PDF, but it loses the distortion that made it optically match with the perspective in the mock up. So, I am forced to use "Edit Contents" which opens a new window and adds steps.
►Wait for PS to open the Edit Contents in new window.
    ►File > Place new PDF.
►Save and close, return to Mockup File.
►Save As... Mockup File as Jpeg with proper name to reflect new BG.
I've been looking for a method like InDesign has, where I can easily replace all iterations of one PDF with another in the mockup. This presents a couple problems. Firstly, Photoshop doesn't really have "pages" so I'd still have to open all of the PSDs (since each one is a different view) and change them manually. I tried instead to just do it in InDesign, importing the base mockup PSD with one on each page and placing the PDF on top (So I can use the relink feature). This doesn't work because ID doesn't allow distorting of placed files, so the best I can get is a crappy shear to imitate perspective on the mockup and the mockups look rediculous. I am totally open to suggestions on this.
I have The Adobe Master Collection CS6. I feel like I must be missing something that will make this easier. Particularly in steps 4, 6, and 10 where I am doing the same repetative task over and over again, I wonder if there is a more efficient use of my time. I've thought about possible PS actions to replace the needed Smart Objects, but as far as I can tell I'd still have to place the new file, so I don't think it would save any time?
Also, I've searched the forums but haven't found a way to batch export to PDF with security. That alone would be a huge time saver. :/
Thanks for looking and I appreciate any advice!

    Peter,
I use styling to turn off Holidays in the month views. But, there are pages in the actual book that detail the year's US Holidays. So, unless I wanted to remove/re-add a page for each save they have to be in different Indd files I think. All of the variations have different content. There is a version with weekly meal planning, one with weekly lesson planning, some with week views, some with only month views. Some of the files are for add ons to the planner as well (activity pages, notes pages, optional covers etc. So, I'm probably stuck with having that many files. But I wish updating/saving as PDF was better.

  • Unlocking secure pdf

    Hello
I am wondering if Adobe is working on the ability to unlock secure pdf documents on mobile devices like the Motorola Xoom?

Currently, Adobe Reader Touch for Windows 8 does not support DRM (Digital Rights Management) protected PDF documents and eBooks from schools and libraries.
It would require significant development time and resource to support a proprietary (non-Adobe) form of protection (as opposed to the protection built into the PDF language).  Since Adobe Reader Touch is a relatively new product and the team is fairly small, adding the support will not happen in a short period of time.  In fact, Adobe Reader for iOS and Android (which have been available in the market much longer than Adobe Reader Touch) have not supported eBooks yet.
Because a Surface RT tablet runs the Windows RT operating system (as opposed to the Windows 8 operating system), your options for viewing eBooks from your school may be severely limited.  Adobe Reader XI (desktop app with classic UI) is not compatible with the Windows RT operating system, either.

  • Securing pdf by scheduling webi Report (PdfWriter.AllowCopy)

    Hello,
triying to secure the pdf-instances of report scheduling in BO trough deactivating the PDF-SecurityOption "PdfWriter.AllowCopy"
publication extensions should offer this possibility to secure pdf-files by scheduling. Unfortunately only for Crystal Reports files. But we need it for Web Intelligence docs ..
SAP also offers an SDK sample for this purpose ..
    [SAP Sample Code: Java Enterprise BE12 Create-Publication CR-PDF |www.sdn.sap.com/irj/boc/index?rid=/library/uuid/9074bb6f-3857-2c10-bcab-be13735881d4]
the interesting part of this sample is the following ..
    mergeOption.securityOption = new SecurityOption(PDF_USER_PASSWORD, PDF_OWNER_PASSWORD,
    PdfWriter.AllowCopy| PdfWriter.AllowPrinting | PdfWriter.AllowScreenReaders)
Since it is working only for Crystal Reports, The question is:
is there a possibility to manipulate code in order to generate a PDF-Plugin for only deactivating the security Option "PdfWriter.AllowCopy" before publication delivery .. ??
    How can i realize that .. ?
    Thanks ..

You would need to create your own publication extension.  The one that is provided only works with the PDF version that Crystal Reports generates.

  • How do you secure PDFs in Leopard?

I've noticed when printing to PDF in Leopard that I have "Security Options" which include requiring a password to open the document. The option doesn't specify what level of security this is though - is it the original or much more recent (and secure) password protection?
In the event this option provides the older PDF password protection, how do you get the full suite of PDF security options when creating PDF documents on Leopard?
    Thanks!

Actually... I was referring to even before 128-bit AES was available for PDF protection. On some PDF aware applications I've seen options that include (I think) "Original Password Protection", "128-bit AES", and "256-bit AES." I'm curious to know if the Leopard PDF print "Security Options" function is 128-bit AES or something else.
Anyway, I think your advice is sound... I'll probably end up buying a bunch of the full Adobe Acrobat.

  • Highlighting text & adding notes to a secured pdf

    Hi,
I have a secured pdf (locked for edit) which is fine by me, but why can't I highlight the text or add notes to that PDF?
Am i missing something? I am not altering the text or anything, just highlighting it...
Other application, as well as the Windows 8 reader do allow it!
I am using Adobe PDF reader touch for Windows 8.
    Thanks

We bought a PDF book from the site that you mentioned and inspected the document restrictions.  The PDF book is encrypted.
Currently, Adobe Reader Touch does not support any changes to encrypted PDF documents, even if the document permissions allow "Changing the document" or "Commenting".
We hope to offer the capability of making changes to encrypted PDF in a future release.  Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • Why can I only get the option to print pdf files

    Hi,
I have a website app that uses CR13sp2 and VS2010sp2.  The reports were created with CR10 and are retrieved
to be printed via the VS2010 CR13 app.
I get receive a window which reads:
The viewer must export to PDF to print. Choose the Print option from the PDF reader application once the document is opened. Note: You must have a PDF reader installed to print. (eg. Adobe Reader)
The server is sql server 2003 and I have loaded all the latest runtimes for CR10
Can someone tell me what wrong.  There are no CR13 reports passed to the app
    Isaac

And to set the export types use this code:
// set up the format export types:
    int myFOpts = (int)(
        CrystalDecisions.Shared.ViewerExportFormats.RptFormat |
        CrystalDecisions.Shared.ViewerExportFormats.PdfFormat |

    //int myFOpts = (int)(CrystalDecisions.Shared.ViewerExportFormats.AllFormats);
    crystalReportViewer1.AllowedExportFormats = myFOpts;
You will need to create your own Print button to be able to use all types.

  • Why do I not get the checkout option for a pdf type document when clicking on the document link in the SharePoint workflow task?

We are trying to use workflows to review and edit pdf files in sharepoint 2010. We are having a couple of issues and am hoping someone has the answer.....
    1)  When myself and coworkers click on the pdf document in the library, we get the check out option as expected.  However when we click on the document
link in a workflow task (on the sharepoint site), the pdf opens as a temporary file and we do not get the check out option.  Why does this happen?????
    2)  The same thing happens when we click on the document link in the workflow task email;   HOWEVER,  one of our co-workers does get the
check out option when clicking on the link in the email task.  Why would she get the checkout option using the email and not when clicking on the link in the task list on the sharepoint site ????  We have compared our internet settings and adobe
settings to ours and found no differences.
We are using Sharepoint 2010, Windows 7, IE8, Adobe Reader X or XI.  Some of us have Adobe Pro X and have the same issues.

    Hi,
According to your post, my understanding is that you could not get the checkout option for a pdf type document when clicking on the document link in the SharePoint workflow task.
I try to reproduce the issue, however, no matter when I click the pdf type document in the library or click on the pdf document link in the workflow task email, it download the pdf doucment and then I can open it.
It will be better if you can descript how you
get the check out option as expected when you click on the pdf document in the library.
    Then I upload a
word type document to the library, no matter when I click the word type document in the library or click on the word document link in the workflow task email, I can open the word document directly and get the check out option as expected.
I recommend to use the other type docuemts to check whether the check out option works.
    Thank you for your understanding.
