Permissions issues and more

So I've replaced my system hard drive hoping it would fix issues I've been having. I had 250 GB drive and I changed it out for a 2TB drive. I recently upgraded to SL 10.6.3. Sometime when I start up my HD starts indexing and everything becomes incredibly slow. Most programs will not open and now my machine freezes up. So I thought I have a failing HD, but I'm still having the same issues.
After installing a new HD I get this when repairing permissions:

And on and on.
I have two user logins. One has admin privileges and the other does not. Could this be an issue?
I also connect to a Facilis Shared File System via fiber channel which I have read and write permissions to. This mounts at start up. Maybe this is the issue?
Thanks for the help in advance!

you are having it sounds like the same problem(s) you had before with this.
Did you clean install? start from scratch? clone with SuperDuper? Run Disk Warrior?
Made sure that the Get Info for the destination system volume has "ignore ownership" not selected? it shouldn't be anyway with an install or internal hard drive.
Hopefully this is brand not a GREEN variety drive?
It is normal for some messages to show when running REPAIR PERMISSIONS and I'm not sure what you installed or why AirPort and others are listed.
If you continue to have problem keep eye on Memory tab in System Profile, and test your RAM with Rember/Memtest and AHT.

  • Permissions issues and installing FCP Studio - admin has no privileges

    Hello
Compressor 2.01 was crashing to I pulled out the universal binary updater discs and decided to finally upgrade. When I run the installer, I get the following error when I input my serial number:
"Licensing Error: The license file will not be written to disk because the user does not have enough privileges."
I am an Admin user on the Mac.
I recently (this morning) ran Disk Utility and fixed permissions. I also booted into single user mode and ran FSCK. Those things are supposed to FIX permissions issues, not cause them, right?
I also ran permissions fix a few minutes ago - after I got this message. The error message still pops up.
    What can I do?
    Thanks,

  • CS4 - Layers Display Issue and more

I am running XP64 and have CS4-32 and CS4-64bit installed (using the updated and correct master collection installer)
CS4-32 is basically unusable to me because I cannot see what I am doing as changes are being made to layers. It does it does not display updates to a layer on the screen until I click on the photo. For example, I have a psd file with a background layer and a Gaussian blur layer. A layer mask was used to mask out portions of the blur. IF I simply click the eyeball off on the blur layer, I see no changes to the photo until I click inside the photo. Disabling/enabling the layer mask as the same issue.
If I use the brush tool to make adjustments to the mask, I can no longer see the mask in the layers pallet. The mask is displayed as tiny black and white dots and has no representation of my actual mask. As I brush changes onto the mask, I can see the effects in real time on the photo. But I still cannot see the normal B&W representation of the mask in the layers pallet. If I use the brush tool on the blur layer (not the mask), the photographic thumbnail representation normally displayed in the layer's palette also turns into displaying tiny black and white dots.
b What is causing this issue? Is it a setting that I can change or a bug?
The above issue(s) do NOT happen with CS4-XP64.
Upon startup in CS4-64, I get a GPU disabled message. in CS4-32, I do not. But in CS4-32, my CPU settings are dimmed out and openGL is NOT checked. I have the latest drivers for my video cards installed. In CS3, enable 3D acceleration is checked. IN AE CS3 and AE CS4, it lists that my openGL is 2.1.2 and all features of AE are supported. What open-GL version does PS-CS4 need?

Who was asking for sympathy? I was only asking for help, which a few people were kind enough to provide. I see no reason for people to make posts on other people's threads that do not offer any help. If you think that I am stupid for using an unsupported OS, then just don't post and keep those feelings to yourself. How are posts like this constructive? I even stated in my last post that I knew that I was not going to get any help from Adobe. So why reiterate that? What is the purpose of your and these types of posts? I am as baffled by them as you apparently are about why I am using XP64.
But if you must know why I do not go to another OS, it is because back when I built this computer, XP64 was the only 64 bit OS around. I have this computer in a dual boot with XP PRo 32 bit and XP64. XP64 has, up to this point, been the most stable platform for me to run the adobe suite of products on. I can clearly say this since I have installed (and since deactivated) them on the same hardware under the XP32 boot. But XP64 has, again, been very stable. I have had many iterations of Adobe software on everything from Win 200 to several on XP and on Vista. And without a doubt this XP64 machine has been the most stable for what I do.
The other reason why I continue to use XP64 is because I cannot upgrade to Vista 64 without a totally new computer. The MB drivers have not been developed for Vista.
And lastly, 64 bit allows me to run more programs at once by utilizing more total memory, even with 32 bit applications. I could install the suite on my XP32 version of the same machine but I'd rather continue to use XP64 with CS3 than not having the stability and ability of running more applications simultaneously that I can with XP64.
So yea, my living depends on my software working correctly too and PS CS3 will work just as well today as it worked before I installed CS4. It is just not worth it for me to spend thousands of dollars on a new PC just so that I have say that my computer is run under a supported OS. As we have seen here, a supported OS is not a guarantee that the software does not have bugs in it. This issue will not affect my ability to make a living. It is only a minor inconvenience that will undoubtedly be fixed in time.

  • Random shut down issues and more, apple recieved puter today, on hold

Ok so i have all the signs of a bad logic board or messed up puter. Mooing, random shut downs, dies during screen saver, and dies when lid is closed. I sent unit in yesterday, they got it today. Website sai on hold for infomation. So I gave them a call. They said they reseated the ram and its working and what else was wrong. I told then the mac genius did this twice and did all the other reset, then i got it home and it died again. There gonna start running more tests on it, i told her to tell the tech of the terminal thing to do to cause shut downs. ANd i told her of this post. She was extreamly nice to me and said there going to take care of me. they have had it for one afternoon, so i cant yell yet. I did ask that they replace the unit and send me a new one, she said they will run a more tests and go from there. I pointed her towards this forum as im sure many of you have and she said there going to and have been checking it out. So I guess there ontop of the issue. My bigest fear was getting the unit back andhaveing same problems. But hey thats what customer service is for so ill give applecare there fair chance first. Ill keep ya updated.

    here another scientist.
Firmware is reversible by reflashing it ... it just
need another set of istruction in binary package.
My ISSUE is related ONLY with firmware,
    mathematically.
Actually that's only partially true. It's only reversible by reflashing if someone has released the "reflash" package, which Apple has not. And so long as the changes it made allow a rollback of sorts. Many firmware updates will very clearly state that they can not be removed or undone. So... in your case, the previous poster was correct... it is impossible, through software to reflash your MacBook firmware
Go ahead and try to even reload the firmware, your MacBook knows it is already updated and will not allow the firmware to be reflashed.
Please, put your energy towards some other project, the SMC Firmware update, no matter how "coincidental" the timing of your RSD was, is not the root cause of the RSD.
BTW - I will echo the same comments about your experience with the so called Apple Genius, he's a tool
Call Apple or go to the Store and speak with someone else, in fact ask the Apple Genius if he is familar with the MacBook Random Shutdown. If he is not, ask to speak with one that is. The Apple Genius I spoke with was indeed familar with the problem and was simply great in processing my repair. Every instance so far has been related to a hardware problem.
    Good luck
    Greg

  • Cold lockups, irql driver issue and MORE

Ok ladies and Gents I figured I would make a thread as to what I have done with my machine and see if anything is better, and or worse or anymore I can do... My first try at installing everything failed... BAD LOL, however I am a hard working man so I reinstalled everything on XP pro tried again, after installing all the drivers I got random blue screens IRQL blue screen... I logged into safe mode with networking and downloaded sp2 for administrators and logged into true safe mode, I then installed it, and reinstalled drivers this stopped that problem and things were way more stable. Then I had issues with random cold freezes.. games or what not it happened NOT as often as before but still happening... I went into BIOS and set to optimal settings, then turned off my onboard sound for soundcard, moved RAM to slot one and two, and set my voltage on ram to 2.7, then turned of the extra AGP write fast, and everything atm looks good but my last lockup took about 2 hours... so I dont know as Ive only been on an hour... IF anyone has any more suggestions please let me know... I have K8N Neo 2 AMD athlon 6500, Geforce FX 5200 256, with 2 512s... Well any suggestions would make me a happy man THANKS!!
    Matt--

Well guys it appears that this works... as a guy who spends his whole life working on computers and there ilk this was a bit confusing, being a Dragon (soyo) fan I had heard the wonders of the MSI boards, and after reading reviews I went this route.. The initial prolbems with drivers (removed my removable HD from drive bay and installed another) occur after installing the nvidia drivers for the MB, Im not sure what combination caused this but I can replicate the problem, and I also dont know what about SP2 fixed the issue, but that in fact it helped.. The second issue was a RAM issue for sure.. Nothing worked till I moved my ram and then upped the voltage to the sticks to 2.7. After this no lockups after intense gaming for 9 hours... So I think my issue is solved or appears to be anyway. My first taste of msi was problematic but these boards help a bunch, and I will be giving my advice to anyone in the future and checking this on a regular basis... THANKS MSI... my gaming is great now!!
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • External WD Hard Drive suddenly Read only - Permissions Issue and Error 50

After completing a recent OS update, I noticed my WD, External HD was no longer accessible. When trying the run a backup, via Time Machine, I would see the following error: "Time Machine Error. The backup volume is read only." If I tried the open the back up drive to see individual files, I would receive an error suggesting I did not have sufficient privileges to access the drive. Apple tech. support suggested I lot into my computer as the "root" user. Once I did this, I still received the Time Machine error, but, could open the Back Up drive in Finder and access files. It was still impossible to add files to the back up drive, but, at least they're accessible. Lastly, I would click the "Get Info"option for the backup drive. Once in the Info window, I would choose the sharing and Permissions tab. All privileges are set to "Custom". When I try to change them to "Read/Write" I see the following error, "The Operation could not be completed. An expected error occurred (error code -50). The tech. Apple tech. support rep. was stumped. Any ideas? Thanks so much.

  • E4200 v1 - NAT issue - and more....

Please bear with me, I try to make things work - but my skills are not enough for this... Please help anyone..
    2 things:
    #1)
I want to Disable NAT on my E4200 v1 with latest FW, since already my ADSL modem does this,... or the other way around - but it does not make much sense they both do it...
My problem is how to set up the static route..
    ADSL modem
IP:192.168.01  (GT784WN)  with NAT enabled, and all other filters disabled.
    E4200
    Internet IP: 192.168.0.2
    GW: 192.168.0.1
    LAN IP: 192.168.1.1
How should I set up the static route on E4200 for things to work with NAT disabled?
Would it make sense to disable NAT on the cable modem instead - and let E4200 handle that?
If so - how would the routing have to be configured?
    #2)
All my computers are connected to E4200, some with wire and some wireless....
In Windows, Explorer, Network - On top there is supposed to be a list with recognized "Computers",
What I see, varies A LOT....
I always see the computer itself: MYFS01,
and I always see the E4200 (MyHUB) (why this is here I don't understand either - I have Media services disabled in E4200)
If I unplugg the E4200 from power... and plug back in again,.. I get ALL Computers listed... Backup device connected via LAN, some WiFi connected devices including my PlayBook,... - but after some time, anything from a few minutes to an hour - most "computers" dissapear from the list - and won't get back until I unplug the E4200.. A reboot of any of the computers does not work either...
I have noticed - that When the list of "computers" in Windows are reduced, I am unable to do a "net view" from my main computer (MYFS01), but after I reboot the E4200, and devices pops up again,... doing a "net view" show all the computers...
Also - While they do not show up in Windows Explorer, I can still access ALL computers and devices - with both \\IP access or \\computername ...
To test, I then took away the E4200 and used ONLY the ADSLmodem (GT784WN) - and I see all Computers always...
Now I don't understand anything - I first thought this was a Windows 7 issue, but - since it seems to be working with another Switch/router - I suspect the E4200 to be the bad one... but - I could of course be wrong,,,,
    ANY assistance would be appreciated...
    thanx

You are correct.  You do NOT want double NAT'ing going on.
You need to put your GT784WN into bridge mode.
Perform a Google search on "GT784WN bridge mode".  I found some good links that looked like they would help you do this.
Putting your GT784WN into bridge mode will turn it into modem only.  You should also turn off all firewall, security, uPnP, wireless, etc settings on the GT784WN.  You need to dumb it down as much as possible.  The E4200 v1 needs to do all the work.
This is exactly what I did with my Arris cable DOCSIS 3.0 router.

  • Permissions Issues plague remote access attempts

I have a couple of networked IMacs in my house. They readily see and connect to each other via OS 10.5.6, being connected to the same router. Usually there are no problems copying files from one Mac to the other or saving changes in work to a second Mac
EXCEPT...... perpetually frustrating recurrent "Permissions" barriers no matter how hard I try to give myself unrestricted access to my files on one Mac from the second one when using MS Office.
EXAMPLE: I try to use Microsoft Office 2008 documents stored on one IMac from the 2nd IMac and am not allowed to save changes - not even when I am the owner of the accounts and documents concerned. Furthermore, these documents are opening as Read-Only even though their sharing options have been ticked on in the document settings....
Microsoft says this is an Apple networking permissions issue and not a fault of their software. They advised me to check the appropriate "share this document" boxes within their files and this I have done. I log in as the Read/Write access owner of a given directory and still I can't save changes in MS documents unless I am operating the Mac where the file actually resides.
Please, please, can anyone simplify the ESSENTIALS one must perform in Apple Sharing Prefs setup when trying to give one's self unrestricted access to all one's files - with full Read/Write privileges unrestricted - from a second Mac on the same local network ?

This problem of mine tends to happen only with MS Office files. The MS Word and Excel files that always insist on opening as Read-Only (and Microsoft insisted to me this was because of an Apple Networking permissions issue !!) are within folders that in turn are within higher level folders for which the permissions ( ?? and does this not apple for the whole folder and all its enclosed files and folders ?? ) are set as "Read and Write" for me, for "others" and "everyone" as well. I figured that looked broad enough. Still, though, I am stymied from saving changes though I own the files and both computers involved !!!
Surely Apple offers users some sort of stripped down (SIMPLE !!!) way of opening up read/write access as broadly as possible for any given networked folder whose own user and owner wishes it to have these broadest possible access permissions - so that surely I as the owner should be able to access.
I have repeatedl;y repaired permissions but this does not seem to help. I have noticed that sometimes some individual MS documents within a folder whose folder permissions have been opened up have not recognized the broader permissions granted for the whole folder and still have bizarre restrictions.
Don't all the files within a folder reflect automatically the permissions set for the folder itself ???
If not, why bother opening up a folder ??

  • Disk Utilities/Permissions Issues with Leopard

What is wrong with Leopard's permissions? I have had numerous permissions issues, and had to reformat my two disk drives and Archive & Install Leopard on my startup disk after a Tiger to Leopard Upgrade.
Now when I run Disk Utilities and Repair Permissions (which I do routinely), what used to take a minute or two in Tiger now takes a half hour (or longer) in Leopard?
I ran Disk Utilities on my MacPro and it has taken nearly 25 minutes and is still going. My MacBook Pro is estimating the time at 1-minute remaining (where it started), and it has also been going for 25 minutes plus. I would like to go to bed, and don't want to leave my MBP running over night if I don't have to.
This is a major issue and one which Apple needs to address immediately. I trust I am not the only User having this issue, is this the case?

No your not the only one. It's been reported throughout the discussions. Appears that some of the errors reported in disk utility will not effect performance. Still, I expect that something is being observed and worked on as an update..

  • "screen shot can't be saved" and other permissions issues

After having my iMac at the Apple Store for four days solving a problem with "quit unexpectedly" issues with all Apple built-in Apps on OS X Yosemite, I got the machine back with those problems solved.  It involved re-installing OS X and restore files from backup.  I thought all was well; the Genius Bar dude showed me that it's fixed. He said it took so long because of bizarre permissions issues he'd never seen before.
Now that I've lugged this 40lb machine back home (after verifying the fixes in the store) I now find that several (other) functions don't work.  When I try to do a screenshot, I get this message:"Your screen shot can't be saved.  You don't have permission to save this file in the location where screen shots are stored."  Message could have been more helpful; the "location" is the desktop.  Pretty descriptive, though.  Seems I can't save anything to the desktop.
I tried creatng a folder on the desktop.  Got this message: "Finder wants to make changes. Type your password to allow this".  Type password and new folder appears.  Drag the new folder to the trash, get same message..
I tried copying a file from a network drive to the desktop. I get this dialog: "Modifying Desktop requires and administrator name and password.  I clicked "authenticate" and after a 3 minute delay (with "Preparing.." ) I get this dialog; "Finder wants to make changes.  Type your password to allow this".  I type the password and the file appeared on the desktop.  Before the work at the Apple Store, this never happened.  BTW I have only one user account and it's marked "Allow user to administer this computer".  Thinking something might be goofy with the pw, I changed it (took 3 minutes to do, oddly) and rebooted. No joy. Same thing happens when I try to drag something from the desktop to the trash.  Long time "moving" message followed by having to provide and admin pw.
I tried to save a Safari attachment to the Downloads folder and got this message: "Safari could not download the file xxxxx because there is not enough free disk space".  Since I have more than 600GB of available space, I think the message is wrong and that it's really a permission issue with the Downloads folder.
Tried to reset the password again.  Click to unlock the Users & Groups panel, get "System Preferences is trying to unlock Users & Groups preferences.  Type your password to allow this".
All this tells me that somehow Yosemite is in "nag" mode (reminiscent of Windows Vista.
    Any ideas?
    Chaz

Back up all data before proceeding.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership, permissions, and access controls to the default. If you've intentionally set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it, but you do need to follow the instructions below.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user, and the one in question is not an administrator, then go to Step 2.
Triple-click anywhere in the following line on this page to select it:
    sudo find ~ $TMPDIR.. -exec chflags -h nouchg,nouappnd,noschg,nosappnd {} + -exec chown -h $UID {} + -exec chmod +rw {} + -exec chmod -h -N {} + -type d -exec chmod -h +x {} + 2>&-
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window by pressing command-V. I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command may take several minutes to run, depending on how many files you have. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Take this step only if you have trouble with Step 1, if you prefer not to take it, or if it doesn't solve the problem.
Start up in Recovery mode. When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
              Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open. In that window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not going to reset a password.
Select your startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
               ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

  • DVD drive issue and permissions repair

Forgive me if I'm combining two issues in this posting.  If they are not related I can separate them out.
I don't know if my drive is going, but I have a DVD for a tv show that I wanted to watch on my Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard (latest patches).  For a while now I've had to keep reinserting the disc because it's not registering.  I put it in, and can hear mechanisms, then it spits it back out.
I watched one disc, ejected it then tried to play another and it just would not load.
I thought of checking disk permissions, thinking maybe the OS had some permissions problems that may be preventing it from reliably reading the disc.  The disk utility reported a number of permissions errors and owner errors, so I repaired the permissions and it reported that it was completed successfully.  I thought I'd run the verify permissions again, just to make sure the errors had really been repaired, and they're still there - some of them were gone, but there were others reported.  I ran the repair and verify a number of times now and nothing's changed.
    My questions:
    1.  Could the problem I'm seeing with my DVD drive be related to permissions of some of the system files?
    2.  Do I have anything to worry about with the disk permissions not appearing to be repaired?
    3.  Would I gain anything by booting to install media and running the verify and repair from there?
    Thanks much in advance!

Could the problem I'm seeing with my DVD drive be related to permissions of some of the system files?
If you've repaired permissions, and you still have the problem, then the answer is no.
Do I have anything to worry about with the disk permissions not appearing to be repaired?
Mac OS X: Disk Utility's Repair Disk Permissions messages that you can safely ignore
Would I gain anything by booting to install media and running the verify and repair from there?
    No.

  • I have a password issue and can't get my gmails on my IOS7 devices any more

    Hi, there,
Well, i have a problem with my devices, iphone and ipad2, both ios 7, and the issue is that i renewed my google account password and updated it on my devices but i cannot get my gmail emails any more and i get a Cannot Get Mail message and i'm asked to go back to settings on my device and put in my details again, which i have already done ten and more times, and still, to no use.
I even thought maybe i am not typing the right password, so i checked it again on my laptop computer and all was fine there.
Well, i hope there is a kind of explanation to this.
    Thanks a lot,
    Totoo

Cheers, thanks a lot, it solved my problem.

  • More Permissions Issues

I have been experiencing a multitude of permissions issues on my XServe/RAD as of late.
When I try to copy a file to my RAID I get an error message that reads:
"You cannot copy some of these items to the destination because their names are too long for the destination..."
But it doesn't matter how long the name is and I've never had this problem before.
The server is an older single 2GHz G5 PPC. The RAID is the same age.

you are having it sounds like the same problem(s) you had before with this.

  • Migration Assistant and permissions issues with new Mac Pro

    Hi There,
I've not had any significant issues with Migration Assistant in the past but I can't create a reliable system with my new Mac Pro.
After using Migration Assistant during the initial setup, my user account wasn't even transferred. I tried restarting but in the end, I followed these instructions to reset and run the assitant again: http://stationinthemetro.com/2013/11/10/make-mavericks-re-run-the-setup-assistan t
I've just finished running it for a second time, and while the user account is now on my new system, there are so many permissions issues that the system is unusable (I can't even run Safari). Creative cloud, 1Password, safari, Dropbox are all apps that give me Disk i/o or permissions errors.
If I look in the user folder, many directories within it have a red minus icon. I've tried fixing permissions using Disk Utility but something is not right.
In the past, the new system just boots like the old one but this time round, it asked me to create an account after Migration Assistant had finished - is this normal? I used the same username and password as before but I'm not sure Migration Assistantis working properly.
Does anyone know a full-proof way of fixing and transferring my account without having to spend hours downloading OSX for a full erase and install?
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers
    Ben

    Thanks for the reply,
I didn't understand exactly what to put into AppleScript sorry (never used it before) - so I just ran the following from the Terminal:
    $ echo $UID
    $ sudo chown -R 503 ~
And restarted - everything works now - thanks heaps.
What had happened and is this something I did or did Migration Assistant just get confused?
I have 3 new Mc Pros to setup on Monday so just want to ensure those are hassle free.
    Cheers
    Ben
