Permissions: Verify vs Repair

I'm still a bit unclear about the need for both Verify and Repair permissions. Since Repair will fix whatever needs fixing, why would I do just a Verify? Is it okay to skip Verify and go right to Repair?
And should I be doing either/both on a regular basis? (If so, how often?)
Thanks in advance,
rb

They probably left that in due to the Unix permission restrictions: you can only Repair if you are running Disk Utility from an Admin account, and not all users have that privilege. As for how often, I would recommend repairing:
-- Before AND after applying any Apple O.S. update.
-- After installing any new application.
-- After any unexpected system crash (kernel panic). Do it together with Disk Repair.

    IMAC 24"   Mac OS X (10.6.4)   Intel Core 2 Duo-2.4GHz-2GB memory

I'm having the exact same issue. It's not just Java for me though - there are hundreds of similar issues with iLife and Utilities.
I believe this is part of the reason my hard drive became corrupt and had to be changed. My Mac's been running much slower than it should and I don't feel I'm getting full use out of it... Since rebooting from Time Machine I've not ridded any of these errors. They fact they've been carried over makes me think that I'll never have a machine that works up to speed again.
Can't think what else could be to blame?

  • DVD player 5.4 keeps crashing using a variety of DVDs.  I have OS 10.6.8, and have repaired permissions, verified the disc, and installed the 10.6.8 update combo.  Several previous questions have adressed this problem.  What is the solution?

DVD player 5.4 keeps crashing.  I have seen here that a number of other people have had this problem.  I recently started one DVD, and when I went back to it, it opened to a black screen twice.  It also crashes with other DVDs after I scroll ahead or back.  It gives an error message that it is skipping damaged areas, or sometines error 69889.  Playing this on a PC, however, there is no problem.  I repaired the permissions, verified the disc, and installed the OS 10.6.8 combo update, all to no avail.  Techs told me that it is usually the hardware, so I bought a LaCie external combo drive.  Still crashes.  Looked on Apple downloads and they don't list a 5.4 to replace this version.  Mac informer.com offers a free download for DVD 5.5- should I try this?  Why doesn't Apple fix this problem?

Your suggestions did not help.  I repeated them again after the first try did not succeed.  Any other ideas?
Would installing another copy of DVD 5.4 help?  How can I get another copy of DVD player 5.4, since Apple does not seem to offer it?  I do have the disc for Snow Leopard, but am not extremely tech savy (and maybe it is the same corrupted version).

  • DISK UTILITY PROBLEMS : unable to verify or repair disk and/or permissions

    hi all...first time poster.
i have been reading past posts for 3 hours and i am still unable to resolve these issues i am having.
it all started with a failed attempt to install an update (QB2006_R4Updater.dmg) that i downloaded for a new version of Quickbooks Pro 2006 that i just purchased. the install continuously got hung up on "Searching Macintosh HD" looking for the application.
i called quickbooks tech support and after about an hour of troubleshooting and 4-5 failed attempts to boot in safe mode...the rep told me it seemed to be a system problem.
    regarding safe mode:
when i try to boot up in safe mode...immediately after hearing the start up tone i press and hold shift until the gray apple appears then release it. the system continues to boot for about 30-45 seconds and then shuts down.
    regarding disk utility:
i have tried to verify and repair the disk permissions to no avail...i also booted from the osX 10.4.6 installer disk (i am currently running osX 10.4.7) and tried to verify and repair the disk but on every occassion it gets hung up a little less than half way through - no error message - it will just keep going until i need to reboot the system. i cant even force quite disk utility.
i have also tried removing the itunes.pkg file as well as moving itunes to the desktop followed by running disk utility...but the same results.
some other info about this system...
as well as running all of tigers bundled software...i have installed cs2, microsoft office x, suitcase fusion, windows media player and quickbooks pro 2006.
not really sure what i need to or should do...just want to get the system so i can continue to keep up with software updates and use the utilities to keep everything working properly.
thank you in advance for any help you might be able to give me.
    17" iMac PowerPC G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

From what you've described there are several possibilities, none very encouraging:
    1. You have a motherboard problem
    2. You have bad RAM
    3. Your hard drive is failing or damaged
Given what you've described I would recommend trying this:
Boot into single-user mode by restarting the computer and after the chime press and hold down COMMAND-S keys until the computer starts up to a black screen with white type. When startup has completed you should see a prompt. At the prompt enter the following commands pressing return after each:
    prompt> /sbin/fsck -fy
If you do not get a return message "Filesystem OK" then repeat the above command until the "Filesystem OK" message appears. If you repeat the command more than seven times without success, then the drive cannot be repaired. To restart OS X enter:
    prompt> reboot
Download the utility TinkerTool System and use it to clear out all user and system caches, font caches, and log files.
If none of this works, then you will have to reformat the hard drive as follows:
    1. Boot from your Tiger DVD. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button, then select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
Quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed to install OS X. You can upgrade to the most recent version by downloading and installing the Combo Updater for the desired version level.

It runs in single user mode, where it runs more safely than other maintenance/cleaning programs because there is less chance of interference from the OS. After installing (you won't see it in the Applications Folder) hold CMD-S at startup. You will get a black screen with MS-DOS like text. Just follow the prompts: type in "applejack AUTO" and it will run through the following:
    Correct any Disk problems.
    Repair Permissions.
    Clear out Cache Files.
    Repair/check several plist files.
Dump the VM files for a fresh start.
    Trash old Log files.
You can also run tasks selectively and for specific users by typing in "applejack." After running in "AUTO,"  you can go back and run it again as "applejack," steps 3 & 4 only, for your user.
The first reboot will take much longer than usual, as it rebuilds caches. It may take several restarts to see the benefits. Because of the deep cache cleaning in AUTO mode some applications may tell you they are being opened for the first time.

  • Is anyone else having problems with Verifying and Repairing Disk permissions?

Hey folks, every time I try to verify and repair disk permissions lately, this is all I get...
Verifying permissions for “Macintosh HD”Group differs on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be 80; group is 0.Permissions differ on “Library/Printers/InstalledPrinters.plist”; should be -rw-rw-rw- ; they are -rw-r--r-- .Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired.
I usually get a long list, then repair it, and it seems to keep things clean.
I'm having trouble with my address book.
When I move the mouse down the bottom of the page my dock doesn't come up right away, sometimes it won't - I have to command tab to go to another program.
So I'm wondering if these are related. Thanks for any help!

That is not what you said in an earlier post. you said you got some errors that certain files could not be repaired. That is Not the same as I Can't Repair Anything. Certain files not having the permissions repaired is Normal. It happens on every Mac.

    Ryan

No; the information the Disk Utility uses when it repairs permissions doesn't have any entries for disks which don't have Mac OS X installed. Each installation of Mac OS X contains an extra set of permission data in the /Library/Receipts/ folder, and most have an additional list of special permissions to check. These only contain data for the disk or partition on which the receipts are located.

  • Difference between "Verify" and "Repair" Permissions?

    Hi,

I thought the same, since DU will tell you in the progress screen when you hit repair permissions something like "Verifying and Repairing Permissions on Macintosh HD... and so forth" So I should be ok by just hitting the repair permission button ony, right?
    Roger Wilmut1 wrote:
It's what I do and I should think everyone else. 'Verify' doesn't actually do anything, just lists problems, so there's little point. It's different with disk repair, because you can't repair the disk you're booted from, but you can at least check to see if there's a problem. This doesn't apply with permissions.
So in your view Verify is just a diagnostic, while Repair is a diagnostic and a repair right?

  • Disk Utility and diskutil unable to format or verify or repair

    Hi there,
Wondering if anyone can give me troubleshooting ideas on this one:
When I try to partition or format a usb drive (actually I tried 3 models), Disk Utility does the partitioning part but just hangs (soft hang, I can still close it) when comes time to format the partitions. The progress bar just stops in the middle and doesn't move anymore.
I get this message repeated a few times in the system.log file:
    diskmanagementd(1367) deny network-outbound /private/tmp/esets.sock
I eventually tried to repair my main HD, thinking that it might be a perms issue but I get a similar problem - it starts to verify and then just hangs there forever. So this issue applies to both format and verify as well as repair. and it applies to USB devices as well as SATA devices.
I was able to repair using the recovery partition but the problem remains intact.
I also tried all the operations with the command line equivalents - always the same thing, either format, verify or repair just hang forever but can wasily be killed.
Given the above log message, I am thinking that diskmanagementd may have lost the permissions it needs to write out of it's andbox - anyone have a clue how I can fix this or if I am in the right direction ?
    Thanks !
    Phil.
