Persistent VPN connection

Hi. I need to be connected to my Mac Book Pro at work. Using OSX Lion. I've noticed that it often just disconnects.
In the "Advanced" options in the VPN in Network settings, I have these two disabled:
  - Disconnect when user logs off
  - Disconnect when user switches account
I searched the web and found an AppleScript that auto-reconnects. That doesn't work for me in OSX Lion, and anyway it's a bad solution as it remains in the memory and checks every 30 seconds.
Any other ideas?
Thanks!

Unfourtunatly, I myself have been having this issue, it turns out, when you're device goes into its sleep mode/auto-lock, VPN turns off probably for a battery saving feature. However, it refuses to turn back on, I've tried almost everything I can think of to no luck. Either it's a glitch with iOS5 or Apple doesnt care much for VPNs for enterprise usage.

  • Unable to set manual IP address for VPN connection

Recently a VPN connection with a client stopped working. They changed phone companies and changed some of the IP addresses.
After alerting them I could no longer log in, I received the new server address which I can log in with it,
BUT my computer is assigned a dynamic address that is already in use on their network. This causes my computer to *not* be connected to their network, even though I am inside their firewall; therefore I cannot adjust the database files I need to.
I have tried to set the VPN (PPTP) connection TCP/IP address IPv4 manually, using the static address they just gave me. But each time I connect, [I believe] their router assigns me an address that is already in use.
    They do not use IPv6.
Can anyone give me direction on how to make the manual IP address *stick*?
The tech person at the site keeps telling me it is a problem with my "Mac, because with Windows.... blah, blah, blah".
I am pretty sure this is not the case and in fact I was the one who let her know I was receiving a duplicate address.
Your VPN expertise is really appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Michele

    Hi,
Please make sure the Ad hoc connection IP adress is at the same range with your local connection. In addition, how about recreate the ad hoc connection for test, please have a try.

  • Internet stops with PPTP VPN connections to ASUS RT-N66U VPN Router

I have a client with a small office network that has a few people working remotely from Windows 7 and 8 PCs. As an inexpensive solution the client opted to use a VPN router (ASUS RT-N66U) that supports PPTP so remote users could access the shared
    files and SQL DB server.
The VPN connectivity for one client was working fine and then stopped working altogether so when the VPN connection is established all Internet and VPN access is stopped. This was especially troubling for me since I work remotely and cannot test or debug after
the VPN session has been connected. I checked the error logs and found nothing. Also there had been no new programs installed. And finally, I ran a full system antivirus scan with no issues found.
In case you are facing a similar issue, before trying something remotely that may not work, use the shutdown with reboot command in a COMMAND window and set a timer for something like 3 minutes to reboot in case you get stuck. (e.g. shutdown -r -t 180).
Problem: The two symptoms of the VPN connection failure are:
    1) All Internet browsing stops working locally
    2) No data can pass through the VPN tunnel
I created a virtual machine on my local network and replicated the client's environment. I experimented with nearly every setting in the VPN dialogue until and came to the final solution.
Solution: For the VPN adapter on the remote machines I configured DNS settings and used the remote as the default gateway.
    * VPN adapter Networking IPV4 Properties for:
    - DNS server 1: Main Office VPN Router IP Address
    - DNS server 2: A public DNS server (Google is 8.8.8.8)
    - I also checked the box to "register this connection addresses in DNS"
Note: Perhaps the local router would also have worked and DNS2 but I didn't test it.
I have documented this because after reading and searching among many Technical articles and the Microsoft support website, I was unable to find the solution that I came up with so I hope to help someone else.
Question1: - Can anyone tell me why the connectivity only works when 'use default gateway on remote network' is checked?
    - I have disabled this option with some business class VPN routers and the connectivity still worked to the remote network but it does not work to the Asus router.
Question2: From the information provided can I determine where the problem lies?
    Is it the:
    1) Remote client PC
    2) Remote client router
    3) Home office VPN router (Asus RT-N66U)
If the true culprit cannot be determined yet, what steps do you recommend so I can isolate the true cause of the failure.
I appreciate any help so that I can be sure my solution is valid and pass along the findings to ASUS if it is their issue.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have successfully connected through the VPN router when the one client was unable to get VPN throughput working.
I looked at the routing tables with and without the VPN connection established. The differences are that:
    1) when VPN is NOT active, there is a route from the local NIC IP to the Internet IP address of the local gateway
    destination 68.109.82.xx
    mask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.0.1
    interface 192.168.0.11
    metric 21
    2) when VPN IS active, the route to the Internet IP address of the local gateway is deleted and a persistent route to the VPN router local network has been added
    Persistent route:
    destination 192.168.21.0
    mask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.0.1
    interface 192.168.0.11
    metric 1

  • Rv215w not initiating vpn connection

    Hi,
Can someone tell me why rv215w is not initiating the site to site vpn connection ?
I configured the connection with the ASA5505 and everything is working
beautifuly if the connection is initiated from the remote site (eg. ping from the remote network),
but if tunnel is disconnected and I want to establish connection from the
network behind the RV215 then it is not possible.
RV215 is not able to initiate the ipsec connection ?

    Dear Michal,
Thank you for reaching the Small Business Support Community.
I would first suggest you to make sure "Perfect Forward Secrecy" setting is disable on the ASA and "PSF Key group" uncheck under the "Advanced VPN settings>Auto Policy Parameters" on the RV215.  If already disabled on both sides and the problem persists, I then suggest you to set the "VPN Advanced settings>Exchange Mode" to "Main" and not "Aggressive" on both sides.  Uncheck the "Dead Peer Detection" if the problem persists.  If no difference please screenshot and send the "Advanced VPN Setup" settings for us to check them out.
    Make sure you run the latest firmware release version v1.1.0.5 on the RV215;
    http://software.cisco.com/download/release.html?mdfid=284436489&flowid=37822&softwareid=282487380&release=1.1.0.5&relind=AVAILABLE&rellifecycle=&reltype=latest
    Just in case you may need it, below is a link for the admin guide where on chapter 5 describes the VPN parameters I mentioned;

  • MiFi 4620LE dropping VPN Connection

I am currently having problems with our 4620LE Jetpacks which are deployed in the field.  After a few minutes of connection to our VPN the connection is dropped when using the 4620LE.  The VPN connection was tested on a wifi without having any drops.  Could this be due to the dormant status of the Mifi?  If so can the dormant feature be turned off?

VPN disconnections are common while connected to a MiFi.  VPN's by nature are picky on small drops that normally do not effect browsers or applications.  This is designed to stop external threats from tampering with your connection but end up being a real pain in the field for daily use.  I'd suggest looking into an Auto-Reconnect feature on your VPN's if you have one available to try and improve the user experience.
Try going through the usual reset steps (power cycle, pull the SIM, reset button under the back door) to see if the problem is temporary or not.  If the problem persists try traveling to a different area to determine if it is location based or isolated to the MiFi hardware.
Comparing WiFi to the MiFi is not really apples to apples.  The MiFi broadcasts its own WiFi signal as would any other wireless router.  Chances are your disconnections are not in the WiFi area, but instead are related to your MiFi's connection to Verizon.  I have seen many instances where a machine is freshly connected and starts to pull numerous updates that overwelm the connection and break the VPN tunnel.  The only work around is to try and connect somewhere else temporarily until the updates are done and then migrate back to the MiFi.
Dormancy is not a feature that you can manipulate, it is a status indicator for your connection.  All cellular devices go in and out of dormancy through out the day.  As soon as your MiFi sends data across or recieves data from the network it will update its dormancy status accordingly.

  • Hi there, I am trying to connect to my server at work from home using a vpn connection. It connects fine and the time ticks along, but when i click go - connect to server, it comes up with connection failed. Please help!

Hi there, I am trying to connect to my server at work from home using a vpn connection. It connects fine and the time ticks along, but when i click go - connect to server, it comes up with connection failed. Please help!

... when i click go - connect to server, it comes up with connection failed.
If you're trying to connect to a Bonjour server on the remote network, that won't work over a layer 3 VPN. Use something like Hamachi or one of the SSH-tunnelling Bonjour proxy apps for that.

  • Window 8.1 system unable to access network shares via VPN connection

Is there something inherent to Windows 8.1 that prevents it from accessing shares on a domain?
I know that it cannot join a domain, but does that also mean that it cannot access shares which are on a domain?
My problem is that I have several user that are running windows 8.1 that are connecting to our network via a VPN.
The users have domain accounts but their computers as windows 8.1 cannot joined to the domain.
So to access network shares they have to use their domain credentials to create a VPN connection.
Once connected the user can RDP to systems on the domain using their domain accounts, so I know that their user names/passwords and permissions are correct. They can access these systems using the computer name, so I don't feel that I have a DNS issue.
They can see the shares on our file server, but when they try to access their departments shared file, they receive an access denied message. There are a few shares that are completely wide open, shared to all users and all departments but they cannot access
    those shares either.
You can ping the file server, from the the client when they are connected to the VPN but you just cannot access any of the shares.
    So...
I am thinking that it has something to do with windows 8.1 and not being able to join a domain, but I cannot find anything to explicitly support this thought.
Other users running a variety different OS (windows 7, OSX, Linux) can all access the shares without any problems via the VPN, so I am a little stumped.

I have done some more testing and oddly enough I can map a drive if I use the IPaddress, but not the computer name, when checking the check box "connect using different credentials"and providing they users domain credentials.
This seems to point to a DNS issue, one would think, but I can hit the file share server by name \\fileserver.dev.lan
I can see all the shares, so dns seems to be fine right?
So I don't understand why I can map a drive using do the IPaddress and not the machine name, but yet I can see and ping the server by name?
When I try to create a mapped drive by machine name I receive the following message:
    Windows cannot access \\fileserver.dev.lan\all
You do not have permissions to access \\fileserver.dev.lan. contact your network administrator  to request access.
But if I use the \\x.x.x.x\all using the very same user and password I get connected with no problem.
This only seems to happen on windows 8.1, which leads me to think that has something to do with OS.
I am thinking about upgrading to windows 8.1 pro, but I don't want to go though the hassle and expanse is the OS is not the problem.

  • How can i use an existing vpn connection without using the option "Send all traffic over vpn connection"?

I have been trying to get my computer (os x.7) to astablish a remote desktop connection to my work computer via a vpn tunnel. In fact I have just discovered that it works fine if i select to "send all traffic over vpn connection" from the options in the advanced setup of the vpn.
If the option is selected microsofts "Remote desktop connection for mac" works just fine. However without selecting the option it is not taking advantage of the tunnel but tries to connect as if the tunnel would not exist.
Now the question is how do I get program to use the vpn tunnel without checking the above option?
Thanks for any hints and pointers.

Then can her computer be authorized to both accounts?
Absolutely. You can authorize any given computer to up to five iTunes Store accounts.
If purchases are made on her account, to a computer authorized to my account, can I put those songs on my iPod?
If you connect your iPod to her computer, yes. Tracks download only to the computer from which they're purchased, regardless of which iTunes Store account is used for the purchase. Or you could copy the tracks from her computer to yours and then authorize your computer to her iTunes Store account. But that's sort of defeating the original purpose, it would seem to me.
is it better to buy music through Amazon downloads and/or actually purchasing CDs to avoid the security features iTunes puts on its music?
That's certainly an option. If it's an entire album I want, I buy CDs. That way I can import them at the quality I want and to whichever of my systems I want. Amazon or one of the other download stores that offer tracks as MP3 are also an option, though for me download stores are best when you just want a couple of tracks off a given CD.

  • Copy from AFP share to AFP share (via VPN-Connection) - stupid?

    Hi there
We set up an OS X server in a remote facility and are connecting to it over a VPN connection (Netgear Firewall).
Everything works fine, there's only one annoying issue: if I want to copy a file from a mounted AFP share (share1) to another mounted AFP share (share2) - both of them residing on the same server - it seems to me that the files are being copied first to my local client and then back to the server again - instead of being copied directly from and to the server...
Is there anything I can do about this issue or am I wrong? Is this a so called "feature" of the Finder itself?
Thanks for any suggestions and regards
    Roman

Thanks for your thoughts about higher vs. lower latency networking - I totally agree. It might be a quite uncommon setup; as the server is being "housed" in a datacenter with quite tough restrictions: not only do they charge us for the power consumption, but also for the traffic being generated - which is 250 GB a month. They're providing an uplink with 10mbps (guaranteed), burstable to 100mbits.
Anyway, we're interested in keeping traffic low - hard to do if we cannot let end users do "common" tasks like moving files from one folder to another (of course, its a sharepoint - but they don't care).
What I'm looking for? Well, I think it will take hours to find out which part of the setup (AFP implementation of the server, AFP on the local machines, either of them on a particular version, the Finder in general...) actually might be responsible for this behavior. And maybe there's a "solution" (if you agree that this is actually a problem" buried somewhere

  • Persistent VPN between PIX 501 and ASA 5505

I am a networking newbie with 2 small retail stores. I would like to create a persistent VPN between the stores. I already have a PIX 501 firewall, and I am looking at getting an ASA 5505. Would I have any problems creating a persistent VPN between these two firewalls?

    No problems whatsoever :-)
There are loads of examples for the config on the Cisco website, and basically these boxes can run exactly the same software, so the config on each is virtually the same. Main difference is the ASA defines the interfaces in a different way. Even if you have different versions of software, say 6.3 on the PIX and 7.2 on the ASA they will still work fine for the VPN, just the configs will be a lot more different. Hope this helps to remove any worries you had?

  • ASA 5505 VPN Connection Issue

    Good morning everyone,
At my last position I was IT Director whose area of expertise was database and application development. All of the company's networking planning and maintainence I entrusted to my sysadmin, Salvadore. Back in 2004 we began implementing major changes in the network. Salvadore recommended SonicWALL firewalls. He did a fantastic job of securing our valuable server assets. Among the many improvements Salvadore established VPN access to the datacenter assets for mobile employees. What I remember especially well was the ease-of-use: start the VPN Client then RDP to a server or connect with SQL Server, in addition to connecting to all devices on my home network. It was absolutely beautiful!
Fast forward to today. I have since retired. I do a little bit of daytrading on the side for entertainment. I leased a dedicated server to run an application that runs continuously 24 hours a day, 5 days a week. I contacted Salvadore to do a security audit on the server. As expected the server was under constant assault by bots trying to hack the RDP port. Salvadore recommended a firewall. The datacenter host offered us two choices of Cisco firewalls, one of which we chose: ASA 5505.
Today I have a secure server which pleases me. The one thing that bothers me however is that I lose access to my home network devices while the VPN Client is connected. Here are the symptoms:
I cannot send an email with Outlook as I normally do by relaying off of my Internet provider's SMTP server.
I cannot connect to the TradeStation servers with my TradeStation application using login credentials that are authorized for my home network only.
I cannot access my Seagate network storage drive.
    This is what I discovered:
My wireless adapter (which I use from this laptop) identifies itself as "Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection" in IPCONFIG. IPv4 address is 192.168.0.5. Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1.
After I connect the VPN Client, IPCONFIG reports a new adapter: "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2". IPv4 address is 10.0.10.4. Default Gateway: 10.0.10.1.
When I launch Windows Task Manager and click on the Networking tab, I see those two adapters.
When launch IE and go to bandwidthplace.com to run a test, I see all of the network traffic going over "Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection 2".
When I disconnect VPN and then rerun the bandwidth test, I see that all of the network traffic now goes over "Wireless LAN adapter Wireless Network Connection".
This explains all of the symptoms:
My Internet Provider will only allow me to relay off of their email servers if I am connected to their network.
TradeStation refuses connection to their network because my credentials do not match my network address.
There is no Seagate network storage device on the remote server network.
My questions to the Cisco Support Community are:
Is this the best I can hope for?
Must all traffic be routed through the VPN connection?
Is there any way to route traffic destined for 10.0.*.* through VPN and everything else through the default connection?
Thank you everyone for your help. I would be happy to provide additional detailed information.

    Hi Brian,
you can route traffic destined to 10.0.*.* over the VPN and keep normal internet traffic unencrypted over the default connection - this setup is known as VPN Split Tunnelling.
This doc shows how to setup the access control list and apply this to the tunnel policy.
    Hope this helps

  • How can I use VPN connection to access my Outlook email?

My company doesn't support iPhone's so I can't get any help from them -- here is my problem:
We run Outlook 2003 and they won't tell me the server name for Outlook. I have been able to connect to our Cisco VPN and access internal webpages, etc. Is there anyway I can use this VPN connection to retrieve my Outlook email?
Or is there anyway I can identify the server name I need to allow the iphone to connect to my Outlook?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Yes, it is possible to connect via VPN. However,if IT hasn't set up ActiveSync on the internal Exchange server, this won't work anyway.
The server name for your Exchange server is in the configuration of Outlook, so you can find it and use that to connect. But that doesn't mean that things are set up correctly to have this work.
To find your server name, (this is for Outlook 2007), Tools->Options and double-click on the account under the Email tab. The server name is next to "Microsoft Exchange server" on that screen.

  • ASA 5510 Anyconnect VPN question-"Hairpin" vpn connection on same external interface

I have a Cisco ASA 5510, I want to allow a VPN connection to be established by a client on one of the inside interfaces(10.20.x.x) to be able to go out the single External interface and get authenticated by the ASA to create a VPN tunnel to the other inside interface (10.0.X.X) and access resources on that subnet.
Basically want clients on a WLAN to be able to VPN back in to the LAN with the ASA in the middle to get to company resources,
    Is this possible?
    Thanks,
    Tommy

When we connect any VPN on a device then it is always a TO THE DEVICE connection and I am afraid we can connect only to the local / nearest interface where user is connected in a network with respect to ASA.
I have seen this scenario working though earlier with one of my clients wherein he has configured his DNS server accordingly so that depending upon the source of the DNS request an appropriate IP address was provided for same DNS name. For example if user from IP address range 192.168.0.0 range connects to abc.com then it will get IP address 192.168.1.1 and if a user from range IP address10.0.0.0 connects then it will get 10.1.1.1.
If we configure the same scenario as well then your requirement will be fulfiled with same name however VPN has to be enabled on wireless interface again. If not, then as you have described configuring a new domain name for VPN connection only for wireless users should do the deal.

    Anuj
