Internet stops with PPTP VPN connections to ASUS RT-N66U VPN Router

I have a client with a small office network that has a few people working remotely from Windows 7 and 8 PCs. As an inexpensive solution the client opted to use a VPN router (ASUS RT-N66U) that supports PPTP so remote users could access the shared
files and SQL DB server.
The VPN connectivity for one client was working fine and then stopped working altogether so when the VPN connection is established all Internet and VPN access is stopped. This was especially troubling for me since I work remotely and cannot test or debug after
the VPN session has been connected. I checked the error logs and found nothing. Also there had been no new programs installed. And finally, I ran a full system antivirus scan with no issues found.
In case you are facing a similar issue, before trying something remotely that may not work, use the shutdown with reboot command in a COMMAND window and set a timer for something like 3 minutes to reboot in case you get stuck. (e.g. shutdown -r -t 180).
Problem: The two symptoms of the VPN connection failure are:
1) All Internet browsing stops working locally
2) No data can pass through the VPN tunnel
I created a virtual machine on my local network and replicated the client's environment. I experimented with nearly every setting in the VPN dialogue until and came to the final solution.
Solution: For the VPN adapter on the remote machines I configured DNS settings and used the remote as the default gateway.
* VPN adapter Networking IPV4 Properties for:
- DNS server 1: Main Office VPN Router IP Address
- DNS server 2: A public DNS server (Google is 8.8.8.8)
- I also checked the box to "register this connection addresses in DNS"
Note: Perhaps the local router would also have worked and DNS2 but I didn't test it.
I have documented this because after reading and searching among many Technical articles and the Microsoft support website, I was unable to find the solution that I came up with so I hope to help someone else.
Question1: - Can anyone tell me why the connectivity only works when 'use default gateway on remote network' is checked?
- I have disabled this option with some business class VPN routers and the connectivity still worked to the remote network but it does not work to the Asus router.
Question2: From the information provided can I determine where the problem lies?
Is it the:
1) Remote client PC
2) Remote client router
3) Home office VPN router (Asus RT-N66U)
If the true culprit cannot be determined yet, what steps do you recommend so I can isolate the true cause of the failure.
I appreciate any help so that I can be sure my solution is valid and pass along the findings to ASUS if it is their issue.

Thank you for the suggestion. I have successfully connected through the VPN router when the one client was unable to get VPN throughput working.
I looked at the routing tables with and without the VPN connection established. The differences are that:
1) when VPN is NOT active, there is a route from the local NIC IP to the Internet IP address of the local gateway
destination 68.109.82.xx
mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
interface 192.168.0.11
metric 21
2) when VPN IS active, the route to the Internet IP address of the local gateway is deleted and a persistent route to the VPN router local network has been added
Persistent route:
destination 192.168.21.0
mask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.0.1
interface 192.168.0.11
metric 1

  • Internet stops working after being connected for 5 minutes to wifi

My macbook pro running on os x mavericks is giving me an issue. After 5 minutes  of connection with the wifi network, the internet stops working even though its connected the network. Reconnecting fixes it for yet another 5 minutes.

Might be corrupted network preferences ..
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type or copy paste the following:
    /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration
Click Go then move all the files in the SystemConfiguration folder to the Trash.
See if that makes a difference.
Your Mac will generate a new SystemConfiguration folder for you.

  • Internet stops working even though connected?

So I've been having this problem for about a week or so now...my internet will be fine and connected and then suddenly it stops working even though it still says it's connected to the network. Then I just turn my airport off and then back on and it works again. It only happens on my computer, all the other computers/laptops in the house are working fine...any ideas as to why this is happening and how to fix it???

what kind of router? i am having same issue sometimes. i have linksys wrt54gs and im connected to router, but no internet, but everyone else in the house is on windows and gets internet connection.

  • Unable to Print on HP 2570 Connected to Asus RT-N66U

I am in the process of setting up my Imac (new to mac) to print.  I have the Imac connected via ethernet cable to an ASUS RT-N66U.  I have an HP 2570 connected to the ASUS via USB.  When I follow the instrux on the ASUS site, I get all the way to clicking add the printer, I get an error message  "Unable to verify the printer on your network." "Unable to connect to ‘192.168.1.1’ due to an error. Would you still like to create the printer?"   Not sure what I am doing wrong, I am hoping someone here has had a similar experience.

    Hi,
The ASUS RT-N66U as a print server support specific models only, as you may find listed for the specific router / print server, only 3 HP models are listed by Asus as supported, as well it does not seems to support Mac OS X:
    http://event.asus.com/2009/networks/printersupport/rt_n66u.htm
As your printer support Ethernet connection, try connecting it to your router via Ethernet and check if that work (I could not find much Mac information within its user guide so that depands if the router support a Mac OS envoirnment)

  • Internet stops working while still connected to wifi

The internet on my Macbook pro begins running slowing after using it for a while. But after restarting the computer it goes back to working fine. Using sites like tumblr cause it to go to crap even faster, and I'm assuming that's because of the constant reloading and processing of new things.
Searching through google pages excessively does the same thing. However, if I watch movies on netflix, or videos on youtube, the internet doesn't go to crap as quickly. When it finally does start running slower, the fan in my computer is running loudly. Pages on the internet refuse to load or load slowly.
The rest of the things on my computer work decently. This doesn't appear to be an issue with Kernel_Task. I'd appreciate any help. I really don't want to have to take in the computer, so I'm hoping it's something I can solve on my own

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, or by corruption of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and  Wi-Fi on certain iMacs. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin. Test while in safe mode. Same problem? After testing, reboot as usual (i.e., not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

  • Two active active ISPs with load balancing, publishing and VPN connection

    Hi,
I wonder how to enable a scenario where i have to use  two ISP's to share 30/70 load on our internet traffic, have to configure almost 60 internal websites already published using microsoft TMG firewall and connect client VPN connections and site-to-site vpn connections. I know that ASA firewall has limitation when using security contexts. Is good idea that how to achieve this gool?
I previously tried connecting four sites running ASA devices with this fifth site running Microsoft TMG firewall but i was able to connect only two ASA firewalls using site-to-site VPN, though I was able to connect remaining two as well but last two were not able to access ASA-TMG resources. furthermore behavious of two ASA-TMG connected sites was strange: sometime i was not able to access cross site resources from one machine but was able to do so from another machine.
I noticed that two of ASA sites connected with TMG site has different internal IP class (e.g site one 192.168.0.* and site two using 172.16.*.*) while remaining two have same class like the first site e.g 192.168.128.* and 192.168.100.*
Did anyone has experiance connecting TMG-ASA with multiple sites within same IP class scenario?
    OR
How to enable same features using Cisco devices as they are on a single Microsoft TMG?
    Best,
    Saulat (Contact# 0092-321-4025587)

    Sulat,
You can load balance between the two ISPs. That is not possible. But, we do have some options that I have discussed here:
Hope the above link gives you some ideas to utilize both your ISP links.

  • VPN connection with Lion doesn't work

    Hello,
I am using the System Preferences to connect to the VPN network of my university. It's a Cisco IPSec. But since the update to OS X Lion it doesn't work anymore. I did not change the preferences of the VPN so they are correct. I also deleted the VPN connection and re-enetered the VPN settings but it stil doesn't work. Yesterday I asked the people from the computation centre but they have also no clue.
Does anyone has a clue what to do?
    Best regards

Is your disk partitioned into more than just one mac partition and the bootcamp partition by any chance?
    A second Mac partition?
This sympton is often caused by the Windows partition moving to be to be the 4th or higher partition, which it doesn't like for booting. Lion installs an extra partition - the recovery partition at the beginning of the drive and shuffles everything down one effectively, so if your bootcamp partition was the 3rd it becomes the 4th and Windows becomes unhappy about booting

  • Why can't I establish a VPN connection using my iPhone 4's personal hotspot?

    Hello everybody,
I want to access our company's network with my Mac Book Pro using my iPhone 4's 3G connection, but unfortunately it simply won't work. Here is what I can do:
    - I can establish a VPN connection from my MacBook Pro using my home (or some other) WiFi and access the company network.
    - I can establish a VPN connection on my iPhone 4 using 3G and access the company network on my iPhone 4.
    - I can use my iPhone 4's personal hotspot (sharing its 3G connection) with my MacBook Pro and surf the Web.
    what I can't do is:
    - establish a VPN connection on my MacBook Pro when connected to the internet via the iPhone's personal hotspot. (connection times out)
    - access the company's network on my MacBook Pro using the personal hotspot, when the iPhone's VPN connection is ON.
The VPN is an encrypted PPTP connection, with username and password.
Is this a known issue, and, if so, is there any way to solve this?
    Thanks in advance!
    Cheers

  • 2 concurrent VPN connections

    ISP: Comast Broadband
    LinkSys Wireless Router: SRX200 (WRT54GX2)
    PCs: 2 Dell laptops, D410 & D600
PC Connections: Each laptop works wired or wirelessly to access Internet
Problem statement: When my wife an dI both work from home, we can only maintain 1 VPN connection. Upon initiating a VPN connection from the 2nd laptop, the 1st laptop's connection is disabled.
Goal: We would like to be able to connect to our work VPN and work remotely concurrently. Is this possible?

It is definitely possible - we do it all the time.
The first thing I would check for is that each PC gets a distinct IP.
Maybe your DHCP settings only allow for one IP. Like when the first and the last IP in the range are the same number: 192.168.1.100 as an example.
If you do get individual IP's, then it may be something to do with the VPN settings. Do you both connect to the same VPN, or two different ones? If it's the same, it may be that their server only allows one VPN per Internet IP, so that's not a router problem.

  • Connect MI424WG to Junos Pulse VPN

I have an Actiontec MI424WG Rev I router that replaced a Rev E router. To get the Rev E to work with Junos Plus client side VPN I had to change the routers IP address from 192.168.1.1 to 192.168.1.2 because it conflicted with the server side ip address I needed to connect to.
I tried this approach with the rev I and it was no go. The first attempt to change the rev I ip address to 192.168.1.2 resulted in a input error "The Device's IP address should not be in the range of the IP pool" so I changed the IP Address Distributions Start IP Address: to 192.168.1.3 I was able to save this config but still not able to connect to the server side ip address.
Verizon level one support would not help. They said as long as the router connects to the internet they meet their obligation. I tried their advance support at $39.95 per hr with no success. I was given an Actiontec support Phone number to try. I thought I would try this board before trying them

Okay, then we know the VPN is working properly though the router.  This sounds like a VPN client configuration issue
I suspect you're getting a conflict between the 192.168.x.x LAN subnet used in your home and the same 192.168.x.x subnet used within the VPN connected network.  If the VPN client  has a configuration option to "allow local network access" try turning that off.  That will force it to send all packets through the VPN network.  If that clears up the problem then you'll know what the issue is.
If this is the issue and you want to have local network access while connected to the VPN, you may want to change the LAN to use a completely different subnet.  192.168.2,x might work well.
If the entity you're connecting to has an IT support team, they may be able to help you as well.
    Good Luck.

  • Question about VPN connections on a E2500 router

    Hello,
I am working with vpn setups for the first time, so I have some questions I would really appriciate some help with. I would like to be able to connect to a computer on a home network through a linksys E2500 router. I have found alot of documentation on connecting to an external vpn from a computer on the lan side of the router, but nothing on connecting from the outside in. The router does have a static ip address with my internet provider, so I can contact the router from the outside. But makeing the connection to the computer on the other side of the router is where I am missing something or I dont realize that it is not possible. On the lan side I am using DHCP to assign the address to the computer I want to connect to. Perhaps I need to make it have a static address also? I realize that when I configure the connection from the outside that I need to direct the connection to the remote computer in some way, unless vpn connections are fully passed through the router and the connection issue I am haveing is with the "inside" computer.
    Other info:
I am using windows 7 for the vpn access
Thank you in advance for your help.

I am going nuts. I have been trying to get a vpn connection established for two weeks. I am using a Linksys BEFVP41 router and have tried to connect with Snow Leopard's built-in Cisco ipsec vpn, IPSecuritas, and VPN Tracker. No luck. I'm willing to replace the router with anything that will work. My office network consists of a vpn router, a droboshare that I want to be able to access remotely, and three office macs - two of the macs are MacBook Pros on which I want to be able to set up vpn connections. Any suggestion on a router, vpn client, configuration settings files, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
