Phantom mail retrieved

iMac 2011 with Mavericks. When retreiving messages in Apple Mail, Mail Activity says 9 of 9, or 8 of 8, when
in fact there are only one or two messages. This never happened with M Lion, only since upgrading to Mavericks.
Any clues?

This appears to be the same bug that has affected Mac Mail with Gmail.  Notification sounds appear late...minutes after you read the message.
You cannot simply turn off sounds in the notifications settings.  You also have to go into Mail - Preferences and disable sound notifications there too.

I'm getting phantom mail notifications in Yosemite even after disabling "Sounds" for Mac Mail in the notification settings.  I don't know of any other app using the same "Ding" but if they do I'm not noticing any changes when it dings.  Mountain Lion had an issue where Mail notifications were delayed, especially with IMAP Gmail, but again, I have disabled sounds.  Any ideas?

  • Poor mail retrieval success on Mac Mail 8.1 (POP)

I recently set up Mac Mail 8.1 as my POP email client.  My email service is through a webmail account I have with netfirms.com.
When I click "Get new mail"  the activity window says that it is fetching new mail, however it often gets stuck on "preparing to retrieve messages..." with none making it to my Mac Mail inbox.
Occasionally some emails come in, however it is very slow in doing so; 10 - 15minutes after clicking "Get new mail".  additionally, the message retrieval activity concludes after a small fraction of what is in my webmail inbox comes into the Mac Mail inbox; it never finishes the job of fetching mail.
When I click on "Get new mail" again it is hit and miss (more often a miss) as to whether it will bring in new messages or get stuck on "preparing to retrieve messages..."
When I go to the connection doctor my POP account is connected to the server, and I do not get any error messages, so I am at a loss to explain what is happening.  It sometimes works, mostly not, and when it does it is very slow in doing so and has only brought in a very small number of the emails it should.
    Any ideas?

    Hi,
In Mail > Preferences > Accounts > the POP account > Advanced tab it will show the port it is trying to use.
Presumably as this works sometimes it a valid port.
However on the web site about how to set it up for various clients does it list other options you could try ?
I would also check the Authentication method as well.

  • Mail retrieval doesn't work most of the time

    Hi there,
I am network administrator for a Windows 2003 network with an Exchange 2003 server. In this network I have 3 apple's with os/x 10.5.4. These 3 mac's use the default Mail facility and use POP to get the mail from the Exchange server. Since some weeks 2 of these mac's suddenly won't retrieve mail anymore and give no message whatsoever. Only 1 Mac keeps working fine regarding mail. On an external site I also have an Mac with an older OS and I have enabled POP en IMAP on the firewall. From this Mac I also do not have a problem getting mail. Since they used to use POP I gave up searching and tried starting to use IMAP. Again this fails on 1 'problem' Mac. The external Mac goed fine with IMAP.
I can ping to the exchange server, i can perform a portscan to 110 and 143 to the exchange server. I can't tracert the exchange server via it's hostname. I thought of network settings and switched it from DHCP to static, checked DNS, but non of them pointed me to a solution. I don't know how to get this working.
Hopefully somebody can point me into the right direction. I'm a Windows administrators so my knowledge of mac's is minor.

  • Mail retrieves old mail already read & deleted

My mail application is annoying the crud out of me these days... I read a message and delete it, and then I go to check my mail later and it retrieves anywhere from 1-100+ old messages from the server. I have it set to remove deleted messages from the server after one week, and to remove read messages from the server after one week, yet it keeps retrieving messages that are several weeks old. It is incredibly annoying to suddenly receive 37 emails that I've already read and deleted...
Any thoughts on how to solve this? Is it a corrupted mailbox of some sort? Corrupted preferences? A glitch in Apple Mail? An incompatibility with the server? Any ideas?
    Thanks,

OK. There are several ways in Mail to manually remove messages from the POP server, but there is only one setting that causes messages to be automatically removed from the server: Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server after retrieving a message.
If you set it to After one week, for example, Mail should remove from the server every message that was downloaded more than one week ago, regardless of what you've done with those messages after downloading them. It doesn't matter whether you've read them or not. It doesn't matter whether you've deleted them locally or not. Either a week has elapsed and the messages should be removed from the server, or it hasn't and they shouldn't.
The Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors > Erase deleted messages when setting does not cause anything to be deleted from the server, ever. It just causes messages that were moved to the Trash to be permanently erased locally from your disk.
Now, back to your problem, are all the messages that Mail is downloading again but it shouldn't older than the time you've specified in Remove copy from server after retrieving a message, or is Mail also downloading recent messages again?
If the former, it could be that you were playing with that setting some time ago, Mail got confused and lost track of some messages that should have been removed, now those messages are gradually expiring from the list that Mail uses to keep track of which messages have already been downloaded, and that's causing Mail to believe they are new, thus downloading them again. If that's the case, just click the Remove now button in Preferences > Accounts > Advanced to remove every message still on the server, or use the Account Info window to remove from the server any messages that shouldn't be there. Choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu located below the mailboxes list in the main Mail window to open the Account Info window -- type "Account Info" in the search field of Mail Help for more information on this feature.
If the latter, i.e. if Mail is downloading again recent messages as well, it could be that there is a problem with the file that Mail uses to keep track of which messages have already been downloaded. Deleting that file would cause Mail to download everything still on the server as if new, but it may also fix the problem, so you may want to try this (use the Account Info window first to remove from the server any messages you don't want to be downloaded again):
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. In the Finder, go to HOME/Library/Mail/POP-username@mailserver/.
    3. Locate one or two files named MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded and move them to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem). Mail 1.x used MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded to keep track of which messages had already been downloaded. Mail 2.0 uses MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded2 for the same purpose.

  • Mail Retrieval from POP server with Pipex

Having just moved house, I've had the displeasure of having to disconnect and re-connect my broadband connection through Pipex.
I've re-configured my email settings with my new pipex email address and username, and can send emails without any problems.
However, Mail doesn't retrieve any email from the pop server, and having checked the settings countless times, I cannot for the life of me figure out why Mail doesn't pull the emails from the server.
I've configured my wifes laptop (running windows) and the email sends and receives perfectly from the same account I'm trying on my iMac.
I've phoned Pipex tech support (who don't support Mac questions), and they have confirmed that I have the correct settings, and that they are the same settings for Windows or OSX.
The only thing that has changed as I see it, is my pipex user name and password, which I know are correct as I can send email from the Mail application.
Anyone else had a similar problem?
    Am I missing something?
    The pop setting is pop.dsl.pipex.com
    The smtp setting is smtp.dsl.pipex.com
    Can anyone help?

In Rules, you can set up the condition that if "From: contains" whatever is the sending email address of the RSS feed (assuming that these messages are relayed that way and don't come addressed as being from the O.P.), then delete it or move it to a mail folder that you have set up to be "on your mac" and not on the imap server. Or you can create a new condition, based on, for example, "Header contains" or "message body contains, and find some unique attribute only common to these particular messages to use as the evaluation criterion.
Many of these subscriptions let you select a "digest" delivery option so you will get a daily or weekly dump of all the posts, all concatenated into a single email message sent daily (or weekly or whatever). If your subscription has that delivery option, I would recommend that you consider that as your preferred delivery format.

  • Mail Retrieval Problem

I moved my Mail file from Applications to Documents, and when I realized I could not get my new or old mail by clicking on the Mail Icon, I then moved my Mail folder back from Documents to Applications. But unfortunately, I still cannot retrieve my mail. All it says in the mailbox is: No Mailbox Selected. Any solutions?

  • Trouble with Apple Mail retrieving Yahoo Mail (OS 10.10-Yosemite)

I recently installed Yosemite and Apple/Mac Mail will not work or retrieve my yahoo mail. I can receive my gmail just fine. I've checked all of my settings, used the "mail doctor", taken the account offline and then online again, rebuilt the mailbox and tried to synchronize the account. Nothing seems to work. Oddly enough the program seems to work intermittently (it worked for a few days when I first installed Yosemite then stopped retrieving my yahoo mail and again randomly over this past weekend, but is now back to not pulling any yahoo email). I can read my yahoo emails online just fine, fyi. I would love it if anyone had any suggestions.
PS: I've also downloaded another mail client, called Postbox, which retrieves my yahoo mail just fine, but the program is severely limited and very quirky (search function doesn't work well, difficult to view and arrange your email without it having problems, etc.).

    jgallag/Larry:
I, too, have been having this problem with yahoo mail not loading into mac mail.  It has been a persistent problem that I have had to close my mail program and reopen to get emails to come in - this was way before yosemite.  But after upgrading to yosemite, I've had more troubling issues.  I have 2 yahoo mail accounts, a primary account and a special use account.  Right after loading the new upgrade, the special use account was unable to send emails via mac mail.  I could send them from the yahoo server online, and from my iphone, but not from my laptop (mac air).  Two days ago, emails stopped loading into the mac mail program primary yahoo account.  I could send emails, but I could not receive them.  I tried all of the things you also did and suggested, to no avail.  I have found that shutting the system down and rebooting was enough in the past to "wake up" the yahoo account/mac mail account interface, but not this time.  This time, it took moving the laptop to another state and another server to refresh the connection and permit emails to load (I headed out for a business trip today, and emails came in when I reached the hotel).  I did not turn off my computer, just put it in sleep mode during the flight, but apparently a change of scenery is what it wanted.  It would be nice if Larry or someone could either fix this problem or help us navigate through it more efficiently - two days is too long to not load any emails.

  • Partial mail Retrieval from .MAC

    HI,
When I retrieve my mail, Only some of the messages make it to my Mail application (the one that came with my powerbook G4 - 15" Titanium). Some messages download, some show up on the server but not on my computer.
    Any ideas?

    Hi Seth.
What does Mail show in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Account Type? If the account type is .Mac or IMAP, try rebuilding the mailbox, i.e. select it and do Mailbox > Rebuild.

  • I inadvertently installed Cloud on my OSX10.8-How do I delete? HELP. MESSED UP MY MAIL RETRIEVAL AMONG OTHER THINGS. PLEASE HELP.

I  am hoping someone can understand what has happened. Poor responses from Apple as they say my unit is too old!  I have an OSX 10.5.8 Leopard. When signing in to Apple inadvertently signed into Cloud and it downloaded to my computer.  Now, my mail has stopped working and lost all info.  When I asked Apple how to uninstall, they told me that was not possible.  I do not understand.  Surely someone out there can help me retrieve my mail and iphoto programs.  I have not checked on the rest.  Thanks so much for reading and hopefully I can find a decent response?
    Linda

Someone over here might be able to help as well. I'd leave posts in both places.

  • Mail retrieval - how to do it using PL/SQL

    Hi,
I want to automatically pull emails on daily bases and store it in a table... how to do it...?
    Please advice
    Thanks in advance

    qwe12654 wrote:
I want to automatically pull emails on daily bases and store it in a table... how to do it...?There are 2 application protocols for reading e-mails from a mailbox. The POP3 (Post Office Protocol v3) and IMAP (Internet Message Access Protocol) protocols. There are also proprietary ones (like used by Microsoft Exchange).
POP3 is however the most common one. Like SMTP it is clear text and relatively easy to use. Unlike SMTP, Oracle does not supply a UTL_SMTP package for it. So you need to use UTL_TCP directly in order to create a client socket for communicating with the mailbox.
Some years ago I posted a very basic example of interacting with a POP3 mailbox using a pipeline table function. See {message:id=2018101} for the source code.
This does POP3 authentication and using the RETR (retrieve) command to fetch an e-mail from the mailbox. Adding additional commands to list the number of mails in the mailbox and delete them after retrieval, should not be a problem.
The POP3 protocol specification is detailed in RFC 1939.

  • Sent Mail retrieval in Mail 1.3.11

My wife's has a PowerBook G4,and she cannot retrieve, read or do anything with her sent e-mails for months now.Everytime she clicks on a sent mail(in her sent mail mailbox) this is what she gets :
The message from Louise Vasvari <[email protected]> concerning “description of apt.” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it.
It wasn't like that ebfore,so we don't know what happened or what to do so that she can read and retrieve sent mails again?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
After updating FW in my E65 to 3.0633.69.00 it is not connecting to my e-mail anymore when the setting Automatic retrieval - in home network is selected. In always connected mode it seems to work ok, although connection drops sometimes and it has difficulties connecting again itself.
    Any ideas?

The application has to be open to retreive Mail.

  • Phantom Mail Messages

The "Drafts" folder in my Mail is showing an ever increasing number of messages which simply aren't there. The number of these messages is show in the usual way in the left hand side, folders column.
Does anyone know why it does this and how I can remove these phantom messages (if indeed they are).
    Thank you

I had the same problem. In another posting I found this:
"One thing to look at would be whether Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors > Store draft messages on the server is checked, and whether unchecking that (so that drafts are stored locally instead) makes a difference."
Bing - no ghost Draft messages.
