Photo resizing and publishing

I think I know the answer but want to be sure. If I drag a photo file to a page and publish it is automatically resized correct? I just don't mean just in dimensions but also as to file size and resolution. I have many files that are large tiff files at 240 ppi. Also, can RAW files be published?
Thanks,
BB

Why ask when one can test it :
http://www.glasslantern.com/RAWpository/
I downloaded a Canon CRW file.
Safari adds the tiff extension. Remove it after download.
Drop the huge file on iWeb.
Resize it to fit the canvas.
Publish.
iWeb makes a JPEG.

  • Enhancement Please! iWeb and Photo resizing

    Hey all
I take loads of photos @ 7Megapixels which results in large file sizes. Fantastic when I want to blow them up. But to drop publish them onto iWeb it copys the graphic/photo rather than asking if you wish to resize or lower the quailty. As we know the same image will look great with a much higher compression rate when viewed.
any views on this as I think it would be a great enhacement!
    Cheers
    Carl

In which templates and in what situations are you seeing this happen? I certainly don't experience the same thing. For example, I have four photo pages on a site on which I've been playing around with iWeb [link to the photo 'menu' page here: <http://web.mac.com/curlytool/iWeb/iWebTryout/Photos.html>].
Comparing file sizes between originals and published versions for one of these pages I see that the largest of my originals is 1.4 MB @ 1,464 x 1,054 pixels. This has been converted to PNG and reduced to 180 KB @ 700 x 120 for use in the page header, and (still as a JPG this time) to 156 KB @ 800 x 576 for display when its thumbnail is clicked and in the slideshow. This applies both when I publish to .Mac and to a local folder.
Resizing of this nature is standard in my experience with iWeb. With photo albums in particular, images are changed to a maximum height of 800 pixels to suit the requirements of the new slideshow. I have to say, however, that my experience is limited to the Modern template. Perhaps the situation is different with others.

  • How to publish a photo book and slideshow in iWeb

Is it possible to (or how do you) publish a photo book and slideshow in iWeb created either in Aperture or iPhoto?

Here's an example of E Books. They're created in iWork and loaded into iWeb as a compressed PDF for download. The photo of the front cover is used for the link.

For a larger file, you can upload it to a folder on your server and create a link to it from your website.

Trashing the preference file may help, as I've outlined in the topic I've linked to. Otherwise, follow the steps regarding removing 3rd party QuickTime components. Also, see the final post by the OP (EEye87) regarding how his problem was resolved (a combination of trashing the preference file and the 3ivx component).

  • HT5457 Help! I used to upload photos via ios and it was always published up to my 5th photos, but on the 6th, it just go to ios photos album and was not published on my fb's timeline...

Help! I used to upload photos via ios and it was always published up to my 5th photos, but on the 6th, it just go to ios photos album and was not published on my fb's timeline...

    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

What's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand?   Also try publishing the site to a folder on your hard drive and use the free FTP client  Cyberduck to upload your site.  It's been known to work when iWeb's ftp client has failed.

  • How to resize and change the resolution of a batch of photos using Automator

I searched for a long time tonight looking for the answer to this (seemingly) simple question:
How do I use Automator to scale and change the resolution of a batch of images?
    It was not so simple.
    Links to this question:

These are just the links on this site - I found them all over the place at MacRumors, Apple Tips, Mac Help, etc.
You can actually manage this in Automator.
Here are the steps that worked for me:
Create an Automator APPLICATION - not a workflow (this is due to the way that I'm batch converting images - workflows might be ok for some cases)
Step 1 is Copy Finder Items
My flow inserts an SD card, opens the DCIM folder that my Nikon creates, selecting the images that I click (command + click to multi-select) and once I have the photos highlighted, I drag them onto this Automator App we're creating.
<==  You'll have this guy soon!
As a result - I want to copy the originals to my computer as step 1.  I don't touch the originals on the SD card (and cards are cheap so I tend to leave them on the cards as well)
Step 2 is the Scale Images action - you can search the library for this and find it quickly.  For my part, I found that scaling images to about 38.8 percent of their size on the SD card is good for uploading to a blog.  Change this value to whatever you wish.
Step 3 is Run Shell Script - and here is where we marry the brilliance found at this link with our script. If you have a hard time reading the text in the image, it is as follows:
    #bin/bash
    for f in "$@"
    do
         /usr/bin/sips -s dpiHeight 72.0 -s dpiWidth 72.0 $f
    done
Save this application (I named mine "Format Photos")
Place the application inside the target folder where you want the images to end up.  I do this because when I have the SD card window open, I can also open my "Photos" window and see my App sitting there.  I select my images as I mentioned and drag them on top of this app.  The app copies the originals and the conversions into the folder.
NOTES: When you open a converted pic in Preview, you will see Resolution = 300 dpi if you go to Tools --> Adjust Size...  This reading is explained by another brilliant discussion as sips only touches the JFIF properties inside the file's MetaData.  However, if you look at the bottom of the Adjust Size... window, you'll see the image size is probably around 500 kb (give or take depending on the original).  My goal was to get the images down from the 3.0 MB I shoot at to around 500 kb.  Therefore even though the MetaData still thinks that it is 300 DPI according to Preview, it has been changed to 72 (open it in some other applications mentioned at the links and you'll find different readings - it all depends on what the application reads from the Meta).
This does not rename the files, so you'll get DSC_1000.jpg and DSC_1000 copy.jpg in all likelihood.  If that annoys you, add a step into the Automator Application that renames the file after the "Run Shell Script" action has run, and you can have each file renamed according to some convention that you like.
This took a heck of a lot longer than I expected - so I decided to put in the effort to share this with the community and save others the hassle.

PPI is pixels per inch of the image.  It is difficult to increase resolution as you are trying to add data that is not there.
But for printing purposes what you want is dpi or dots per inch.
The image processor either accessed from Bridge (tools/photoshp) or PS is a good way to change a batch of images.

  • How can I customize a Pages template to include a photo frame and text area?

I am putting together a reference notebook for volunteers at our local zoo.
I am attempting to format every info sheet the same. Each page will include a photo of the featured creature along with text including description, feeding habits, range etc.
The only program I have to publish with is Pages. I've tried to put in a "photo box" so that each photo is the same size and in the same location on the page etc. I just can't seem to find all the tools I need to do this.
I'd appreciate some guidance. Thanks so much.

You need to create your own default template. Open the blank template & insert a photo, any photo. Now select the photo & resize it using the metrics inspector. Now, with photo selected, go to Format > Advanced & select Define as Media Placeholder. Then again go to Format > Advanced & select define as default image style. While you're at it set the amount of extra space in the wrap inspector, etc. You can do similar settings with text boxes, tables, shapes, etc.
I suggest downloading the Pages User Guide from the Help menu & reading more about placeholders & about capturing pages (sorry, it's not something I can remember doing).

  • Is it possible to adjust the photo angle and size in Snapshots theme

    Hi
I'm new to aperture and am having a few frustrated-hair-pulling issues with the Snapshots theme. I was using iPhoto to create a Photobook of my son's first year and found it to be too limited for what I want to create. I came across Aperture and was wow'ed by the description saying I could rotate and resize photos, add text boxes etc. This was just what I was after so I downloaded the free trial to test it. I like the snapshots theme the best for the idea of it looking more "homemade" but seem to be unable to adjust the photo angle and size from the given templates. Also I find that the border in adding new photos (which I can adjust the size and rotation of) is without the custom shadow effect that the template ones have. Duplicating the template photo only gives one with the shadow effect but also of the same size with the same rotation that I can't do anything with! Rrrrghhhh
I thought this would be a great way to customize the album I'm making for my little boy, and that it wouldn't be too hard! My mac skills are considerable, but I'm by no means an expert! Is this program too much for a non-pro-creative-housewife with a wish that may be solveable in iPhoto afterall?
Or am I just missing something? Is there a way to do this or shall I just give up and choose another theme?
Any recommendations are welcome! Please!!! My scalp is now officially sore!

Here's the solution I used to solve the same problem. If you're not comfortable editing the source files, this might be more than you want to take on--but I've done it to several files with no ill effects. You can follow the instructions on this page and the referenced original post from (he includes a link on the page). Good luck! He's got some great tips on some of his other pages.
    http://photo.rwboyer.com/2010/03/15/aperture-3-book-theme-trick/
A warning about editing the Master pages--it only edits them in that book--it doesn't update the theme. So if you go to create another book with those same layouts, you'll have to duplicate the book and replace all the images. An alternative would be to create a "clean" book with no photos in it and then just use that as a starting point each time.

  • "iCloud Photo Sharing" and "Optimize iPhone Storage"

Before updating to iOS 8, my wife and I shared the same iCloud account. It was convenient for us to use the same Photostream, so pictures of our kids where always gathered together. But iOS 8 has too many features that make sharing same account troublesome, so we have finally split up (digitally...)
Our question is, if we share albums, will our iPhones also treat the pictures and videos in those albums the same way when it comes to Optimize iPhone Storage as those in camera roll? We have 10000+ pics and videos, so being able to stream those from iCloud instead of local storage would be fantastic...
If that's the case, is there a time or storage limit for how many items we can have as shared? Apple hasn't explained those terms very well, understandable, since these features are still in beta. I would be very grateful if someone out there has more insight on this.

I don't see a way to identify the new photos being added to smart album since I shared it last.  iTunes' smart playlist  allows you to do this easily.   But don;t see a way to do it iPhoto.
It is not well supported. You would have to mark the photos you already published in some way, for example add them to a regular album or add a keyword, after you published the photos.
When you add new photos to the smart album, you can add a rule "and has not keyword 'publish'" to find only the new photos that need publishing.

  • IWeb 09 major bug - losing site - believe it's photo albums and photo pages

I have repeatedly lost my site now 3 times since upgrading.
The problem appears to be when editing photo album pages with a few photo albums on them and then rearranging those albums and pages between sites.
I can't be more specific at this stage, as it's happening relatively randomly, but am curious if others have discovered similar problems.
FWIW I am recovering by using time machine and backups.

I too had major problems with iWeb '09. I was unable even to publish to a local folder without getting an error message "Unknown error" (really, really helpful). I published a site created and maintained by iWeb '08 four times to separate local folders within an hour, not changing the site at all during that period. Only about 90% of the contents were published. Typically what was missing was some photo albums and blogs, although not always the same photo albums.
After some careful poking about in my MobileMe-published site I noticed that some particular pages were not publishing to a local folder. Upon investigation I discovered that some of the photo albums, whilst appearing in the sidebar in iWeb '09, did not appear on the main albums page. It seems that, for whatever reason, iWeb '09 had lost the links to these. I deleted the pages from the sidebar and then turned my attention to Blogs. This was the other area where I noticed that publishing seemed to have a problem.
One of the problems seemed to be that there was a link to a, by now, 'lost' photo album. Editing the link and then re-publishing to a local folder at last cured the problem. I have yet to publish to MobileMe, but at last things are looking good in the 'test' phase.
It seems that, unless your iWeb '08-created site was relatively simple, some editing HAS to be done in iWeb '09 before publishing. I hope that this answers more questions than it poses!

  • How do I get rid of 'add photo' link on published photo album?

I don't see it on my iWeb file but it shows on my published website on the photo album page: a link that says:
    + Add photo
Any idea on how to remove that? Thanks!!

To get rid of the download button, open the Photos inspector and select "Photos Download Size - none".
This will not stop people from downloading images by control clicking. All this does is remove the convenient button.

  • Duplicating an IMovie, making changes and Publishing under a new name.

I've created an IMovie and published it to Itunes.  IMovie gives me the option to "Duplicate Project" which I did as I want to use the same basic movie but change photos, music, etc. and then Publish it under a different name to Itunes. However, when I make changes I only get a warning that I've made changes and need to RE-Publish it. I don't want to do that as it seems it would over-write my existing IMovie--and I want to keep my original version.
How do I get IMovie 11 to recognize this is an entirely new Project?  Any help is appreciated!

Thank you Matt!  That is what I was hoping to hear.  However, I'm still a bit hesitant to go thru with this as it appears that my duplicate project and my original project both have the exact same name.  Will it give me an option to rename by project once I hit the Re-publish (misleading as it is) button--or will it give it a new unique name or just how will it differentiate between the 2 projects?

  • Whats the best software for photo editing and creating product catalogues that can be saved as PDF's

Whats the best software for photo editing and creating product catalogues that can be saved as PDF's

You are asking two different questiions:
    1. What's a good photo editor? Answer to that here is probably obvious.
    2. What's a good desktop publishing/page layout program for creating PDF files for production? Answer, not PSE. It's a photo editor, not a page layout program.
