Photoshop CS4 CMYK Color Picker

I was informed today from my printer that rich blacks are compsed of 100%K and 40% Cyan.  However, when I tried creating a new CMYK document with Proof Colors turned on, I went into the Color Picker and set 100% K, 40% C, 0% M and 0% Y, the color looks like a Bluish grey.  Am I doing something wrong?

You may not have a color profile that matches your printing situation (inks and paper) exactly.
And most rich blacks include more than black and cyan (which would tend to be a bluish gray unless you had a really, really warm black ink).

  • Photoshop CS4 - CMYK as default mode?

    Hi there,
I'm running Photoshop CS4 an a few machines using Windows Vista and Windows 7, and I'm wondering if there is a way to change the default mode to CYMK when making a new document, importing pictures etc.
At the moment, everything is RGB orientated. I've looked in Photoshop preferences and browsed the forums etc to no avail.
So my question is this: Is there a way to change the default colour mode to be CMYK when creating and opening documents?
I'm guessing there isn't an easy option (unless I've missed it), so is could it maybe be done a plugin or script?
Thanks for reading, and any thoughts, questions and answers appreciated
    Thanks

Photoshop remembers the setting in the File > New... dialog window. When you create a new image Photoshop always displays this window, for Color Mode choose CMYK and next time when you create a new image your last choice will be automatically selected.
However there is one exception, when you have copied image data to your clippboard. Then the Color Mode option will be automatically set to the color mode of the image that is in the clipboard. You can always clear image data from your clipboard by copying something else like text.
When opening documents, they will open in the color mode they were saved. If you want to convert them to CMYK you have to choose that from the Image > Mode menu.

  • Photoshop CS4 wierd color issue

    Hi,
When I paste something into photoshop cs4 it seems that the colors are washed out or a little off. I noticed this one day when I was working and I haven't been able to fix it since. I even deleted the photoshop profile which didn't seem to fix the problem. How can I reset all of the color settings/presets.
    http://homepages.wmich.edu/~m6newton1/washed%20out.bmp
I also don't know if this helps but... When I do a "save for web," the preview there shows the correct color. But when I open up the file it produces with MS Paint/Windows Image Previewer it shows a washed out version.
Any suggestions are welcome, Thank you for your time.

Bart's only partly right here. What's going on is that you haven't activated the color management in Firefox, and since it's now showing you "monitor RGB" any difference between your working space and your monitor space will show up.
Photoshop doesn't show the difference because it uses both the working space profile AND your monitor profile to display your file. Setting your Photoshop RGB working space to your monitor profile effectively hides the problem by forcing Ps to act like a non color managed app, but doesn't really fix it.
Make sure that your web destined files are in sRGB, that you embed that profile in your images, and you turn on the color management in Firefox. At least you're not using IE which doesn't even have that option.
The last part of the equation here is the type of monitor you are using. sRGB is the standard for the web and until recently most monitors WERE more or less sRGB. Now, with more and more wide gamut LCD screens available, it gets even more confusing as your "monitor rgb" is no longer close to sRGB, making color management in web browsers and image browser all the more necessary.
Your problem is pervasive today and one of the most complained about problems out there. Understanding basic color theory explains it, but users need to insist that application vendors implement profile awareness in their products. It's only going to get worse going forward.

  • InDesign CMYK color Picker is covered by Pantone

I am trying to add a new cmyk color to my color palette in InDesign but it is partially covered by the Pantone value box. I can see the line for Cyan but everything else is covered. This is a sporadic problem, sometimes it works fine and sometimes is does not. Has anyone else run into this problem?

    Hi Tracy,
This might be a better question for the InDesign Discussion Forum.  That said, I have InDesign version 8.1 on Windows.  I'm not having any trouble with InDesign's color selection tools.
Could this have something to do with your display/resolution settings?

  • Help please - color picker is gone in photoshop cs4

for some reason, when i saved files as gif, i could not reopen them. i would get some error message. so i read somewhere to shut down photoshop and restart it while holding down the ctrl + alt+ shift keys to reset it to all the defaults.
i did this but now when i click the foreground or background color squares at the bottom of the toolbar, i get some stupid color window with 48 Basic Color squares and a couple likes of blank squares for Custom Colors.
no matter what i try resetting, i can no longer get the color picker and i have no way of finding hex colors.
does anyone know where my color picker window has gone!
    thank you!

    thank you chris.
that windows vs adobe color picker seems like a very well kept secret.
even if someone knew EXACTLY what to search for: "change color picker"
-- only the page you mentioned and one other
    (http://www.photoshopgurus.com/forum/photoshop-troubleshooting/4946-color-picker-change.htm l)
mentions the Windows vs. Adobe option.
the other 8 results that come up on page 1 of google for "change color
picker" make no mention of the Windows color picker option.

  • CS4 Color Picker?

I am having a problem getting Adobe color picker to produce accurate colors. For example, if I dial in RBG value 49, 49, 49 ( HEX: 31 31 31), I get a dark color swatch that is RBG value 37, 37, 37 (Hex: 25 25 25) according to my MAC Digital Color Meter.  I tried the CS4 Apple Color picker and it seems to produce accurate colors.  Is this a bug in CS4 or is it an issue with my settings in CS4?

The "digital color meter" reads values directly from the display -- it gets values after display correction has been applied.

  • *** Color Picker / Forecolor & Backcolor

Photoshop CS2: My color picker appears to be default to select the backcolor and not the forecolor.... Any ideas how I can revert this to the correct method?
If I click on the Alt + Color - it selects the forecolor (which is opposite of what it should be doing).

That is a nice graphic. I see when the color picker is selected one can click on either the foreground or background swatch and go directly to change or select color. Clicking on the double headed arrow to switch foreground to background does the same thing, but you may need one more click if you want to change color. Or am I missing something?
Here is the link the eyedropper tool selection question I mentioned above. Not really here to argue, just get an understanding what is going on, and learn something new.

can any one tell me how to change it back?

No problem. However, I see you have full Photoshop, and you know, this forum is for Photoshop Elements, the consumer version. For more involved questions you might want to bookmark the photoshop/mac forum, where you'll find better answers to anything that's photoshop-only:

  • Color Picker Doesn't Reflect selected Color

    >>In Fireworks CS4, the color picker doesn't reflect the color selected on canvas. <<

Does your image have an adjustment layer or a layer mask
on the layer that is active when using the color picker?
If you have an adjustment layer, make another layer active
    and see what happens.
If the layer that is active has a layer mask, click on image
thumbnail to the left of the layer mask and try the color
    picker.

  • CC14 Wrong CMYK Color Code

    Hi there,
First of all it isn't a unique problem, my colleague has the exact same issue. I'm using Windows 8, he is using OSX 10.9.4 - Mavericks.
So the problem is, the color what the object has is not the same as color picker says.
To reproduce the problem. Create a blank CMYK document. Create a black CMYK: 0,0,0,100 rectangle. Click on the rectangle then double click on the fill color.
    http://tinypic.com/r/zsuvtg/8
As you can see on this picture it says that is has a Purple CMYK: 60,90,0,0 color. Then click OK and suddenly your black rectangle will go going to turn into purple.
So at this point I cannot trust on the CMYK color picker because it gives me the wrong code, so basically I'm unable to work with this software anymore. Thankfully I didn't uninstalled the older version of CC where it works perfectly.
I already reinstalled the CC14 version and it didn't helped.
    What can I do?

I don't normally chime in as it is not effective, but this might get things going.
It is a bug and it will happen with any one of CMYK colors set at 100% and no other color as the mix, the is 100% Yellow 0 M, 0 C, 0 K  for instance will get a blue mix in the color picker. As will 100% Cyn.
Also if you turn any color mix into a cmyk swatch you will not get that color in the color picker as well.
None of he default swatches work as well.
However spot swatches from the swatches libraries seem to work properly. And if you turn a process cmyk swatch into a spot swatch it will display properly in the color picker.
It should be reported here: (if I report it nothing will happen so it is up to you guys to do the reporting or it will remain as such.

  • Photoshop CS4 64 bit crashes with Color Picker

    Hi-
I have Photoshop CS4 64 bit and 32 bit applications Version 11.02 installed on a Win  7 machine.
In the 64 bit version when I pick on the color picker or any swatch - the program crashes and freezes-up and I have to use the task manager to quit the program.
Has anyone else had this problem? I tried re-installing the program, which rolled it back to version 11.0 but the problem persists - but ONLY in the 64 bit version. The color picker in the 32 bit version works just fine.
    HELP!!
    Thanks-
    Cathy

OMG!! I feel soooo stupid! I discovered the problem.
I recently installed a second monitor and had been working with it - but today it was turned off.
The color picker was opening on THE SECOND MONITOR!! So it appeared on the first monitor that the program had stopped responding!
    Well - live and learn!

  • I have photoshop CS4. How do I set the it to save my photos as CMYK "Uncoated" US Swop?

I have Photoshop CS4. How do I set it to save my photos as CMYK Uncoated US Swop for newsprint on a webpress. I can't find the proper setting, only coated.

It's usually in Edit > Color Settings and next to CMYK Workspace.  As I understand it, depending on the Printing company, they would just ask for the file as Adobe RGB and handle the conversion to their offset press. Is this how they want you to prepare your photos?

  • Photoshop CS2: Get CMYK color from pixel?

Hi, in Photoshop CS3 I can use colorSamplers to pick up a CMYK color from a pixel. But I haven't found anything in the CS2 scripting reference about that.
I cannot use channels["cyan"].histogram, because I need the calculated %-value (0100) from Photoshop, not the color index number (0255).
    Example:
A pixel was filled with 70% cyan, Photoshop uses internally 69,8% and that's the value I want to read through a script.
    Any suggestions? :-)

    Try this:
    var cyanPercent = (channels["cyan"].histogram/255) * 100;

  • Color picker does not work, " program error when I click, photoshop cc

I am user of photoshiop cc and it worked fine until several days ago but suddenly it shows " program error " when I click color picker, and I can not use changing color. Please help me to resolve this issue.

There was a bug with photoshop CC concerning the color picker and its swatches. Make sure you have the latest version and then if it still exists, reset your tools in the upper left hand corner which would be the very first icon in the top tool bar. That should fix it. If not let us know and maybe someone can think of something else.

  • Photoshop CC Color Picker slow lag

Today I got a new Intuos Pro Medium and installed the latest software from Wacom (6.37-5 - I think.)  I am not sure if this is related, but I am experiencing an extreme slow-down / lag when I attempt to use the color picker to change the foreground color.  Basically, when I move the circle, there is a 10-15 second time period where I watch the new color value numbers slowly, one-by-one change to the new values for the newly selected color.  If I move the color circle a couple times, it could be over a minute before the color picker allows me to choose OK and exit the dialogue box.  I tried this on another computer that had CS6, and no problems with the new tablet.  No issues with drawing/ painting very large with the new tablet.
Has anyone ever heard of/seen this?  BTW, no problems a week ago.
