Photoshop files & ACLs?

I am going out of my mind here trying to figure this out. First my needs. I have two users on a 10.4 machine that need to be able to create, save and edit Photoshop files (their own and each others) in the same folder. Until now, the only way I could figure it out was to create a second volume and "ignore" ownership on that volume. I know that I could go into the "file info" permissions everytime one of us creates a new file and modify the permissions to allow the other to edit the file but what a pain that is.
I thought my answer would lie in enabling and using Access Control Lists (ACLs) so I used Tinkertool system to enable ACL support on my main volume and then grant full access with inheritance enabled to both users. This works great for any file (MS Word, Excel, etc.) but not photoshop files. The Word, Excel and any other file created by one user correctly inherits the permissions from it's parent folder's ACL settings but not the Photoshop files. They don't seem to inherit them at all.
I can go into Tinkertool System and propagate the settings and the files seem to pick up the settings but when one users tries to edit another's photoshop files, it shows up as a locked file. I can use the "get info" dialog to confirm that the file does possess the ACL settings but it is almost as though Photoshop CS & CS2 don't recognize the ACL properties of the file.
In summary, my two issues are:
1. Photoshop files are not automatically inheriting the ACL permissions.
2. Even after manually propagating the ACL permissions to a photoshop file, it shows up as being locked (from within photoshop, not the finder) when the non-owner user tries to edit it.
Does anyone have any ideas as to what is going on here.
Thanks,
Troy

Troy,
I'm suspecting that we are using ACL differently. On tiger, you have to enable them specifically. The e flag on ls will show ACL's and from your post - you don't seem to have ACL installed.
Please have a look at the first page of this article. It describes ACL's and shows you how to manipulate them:
http://arstechnica.com/reviews/os/macosx-10.4.ars/8
You can accomplish what you need with traditional groups - if you want that - simply post the id for each user and I'll send back steps to make a group for this folder. (Or someone else here might just guess and propose something)
Also - have you contacted Adobe to see if the version of Photoshop you are using even supports ACL? I honestly don't know what layer of command they use to access the disks - it's not unlikely that their application might not support reading the meta data if it accesses the files directly. It's unlikely (but not impossible) that they used high level API from Apple that would enable them to simply work with ACL out of the box.

  • How to view Photoshop files are saved in the iPhoto library in Bridge?

    I was very happy to see that photoshop files are now a supported file in iPhoto. However I was really bummed to see that once those files are placed in iPhoto they can't be viewed in Bridge. Does anyone know a way to fix this?

    Using Photoshop (or Photoshop Elements) as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
    1 - select Photoshop as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
    2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop. When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
    3 - however, if you get the navigation window that indicates that PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file. You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
    This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
    NOTE: With Photoshop Elements 6 the Saving File preferences should be configured: "On First Save: Save Over Current File". Also I suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.
    If you want to use both iPhoto's editing mode and PS without having to go back and forth to the Preference pane, once you've selected PS as your editor of choice, reset the Preferences back to "Open in main window". That will let you either edit in iPhoto (double click on the thumbnail) or in PS (Control-click on the thumbnail and seledt "Edit in external editor" in the Contextual menu). This way you get the best of both worlds

  • Error in exporting photoshop file

    We have several copies of After Effects being used in the office.  Both myself and another user have encountered a problem saving as photoshop layers.  It gets 87% or so into it and then gives the error; "error in exporting photoshop file" in the info window.  Any thoughts?

    I don't think expressions should have any influence on teh matter. They are just another way of formulating an animation stream value just like keyframes. Icould think of a few things:
    - The new pixel aspect ratio handling in CS4. Due to the conversion, something may happen to the source footages.
    - Layer styles. this may cause a "cyclic use" of the Photoshop engine. Some of that stuff has changed quite a bit for CS4 to accomodate Ps Live 3D and teh new adjustment layer model.
    - Hardware accelerated effects. CS4 passes through OpenGL acceleration through all comps. Using an effect that uses it and happens to think it doesn#t need to fall back into software only mode, may cause a hiccup.
    - MediaCore. Similar to the previous, it uses hardware acceleration and may show weird behaviors, varying solely based on differences in graphics cards.
    In particular for the last two points I would think it is what makes the difference between your systems. One of them has not enough juice on OpenGL, so it's "safe". I'd definitely investigate along those lines.

  • I have just downloaded a trial version of Photoshop Elements onto my Mac Book Pro (10.9.4) and attempted to use Elements on an existing Photoshop file.  I did not see the Elements option in my filter menu and need assistance

    I have just downloaded a trial version of Photoshop Elements onto my Mac Book Pro (10.9.4).  The installation to my hard drive went fine so I attempted to use Elements on an existing Photoshop file.  I did not see the Elements option in my filter menu and am uncertain as to how to "add" the Elemnts to my existing filter choices.  Please advise.

    I'm sorry but it's very hard to understand what you mean. What filter menu? In which program? Do you mean you're trying to use PSE as an external editor with some other asset management program? Which one?

  • Problem saving a Photoshop file from an AFP server

    Hi All,
    Just want to know if some of you guys are experiencing this and how you solved it.
    Basically we have an AFP server and OD services. All mac clients are bound to OD and are using the OD account for logging in. Most of the user are using photoshop. However when one edits a file and wanted to save/replace it, photoshop generates an error saying its locked forcing phothsop users to do file SaveAs and rename the file. We have been doing the AFP server and editing photoshop directly through the network for almost 1 and 1/2 years but not experienced this issues until later that we added more users/employees in our network and this issue came up
    The error is
    Could not save "Photoshop File.psd" because the file is locked. Use the 'Get Info' command in the finder to unlock the file.
    We are able to create folders/files to where the photoshop is saving and other applications seems to save/replace files fine except for photoshop.
    Has anyone encounter this and how did you solve it?

    I found the solution here, http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=4644850#4644850 and the steps are as follows,
    In Workgroup Manager (OS X Server) select the group you want to apply the setting to, the choose Preferences.
    Choose the "Details" tab and add .GlobalPreferences.plist
    Clear all the settings, and add a new key called NSUmask, then choose "integer" with a value of 2
    Next time your users for that group log in and they save a file it will be rw-rw-r
    The default umask for Macs is 022 (rw-r--r--), this changes it to 002.  I didn't try manually changing the default umask on the individual workstations, but I assume that would work also.

  • ANIMATED GIF IN A LAYERED PHOTOSHOP FILE

    I created a photoshop file with text and background layers.  The client wants me to place an animated GIF in the center of the file.
    How do I get all but 3 layers which comprise the animated GIF to not go into the animated gif timeline on the bottom of the screen.  I can only get this to work by turning off all the text and background layers.  I need the timeline to just have 3 layers in it and only those layers move.
    Thanks

    NJArtiste (at) optonline.net

    If you only want the center region to be animated, you need to splice it out to its separate file and re-assemble the whole shebang later
    Or you could just change the center part and export the whole thing as an animated gif. If you have 3 frames and you only want the center piece to change, leave the background on all 3 frames but have a different center on each of the frames. Whole thing will be animated but will only look like the middle is changing.

  • "unable to open project file" after importing layered Photoshop file

    After spending a day of work, I saved and closed my 720p project. Today, I can't open it. I get a message saying: "Unable to open project file." Same thing happens with the auto-saved copy.
    I have narrowed down the problem to this: I made a new 720p project file. Without doing any work, I import a single layered Photoshop file (.psd), then save and close the project. When I try to open it, I get the message again: "Unable to open project file."
    Works fine at home. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks,
    PPJ

    I'm just now having the same problem, though I'm using FCE 3 . I can open older (NTSC) files. Just not new HD files that I have also blindly used alpha+Photoshop layers in. When I create a new HD file with a few HD clips in it and even use an audio track from the project I'm wanting to make, and use TIFF versions of the graphics and save it, it will open right up -- but something about these PS files.

  • How to use the same element in different photoshop files?

    It occurs to me often that I use the same element in different photoshop files, a header or footer shown in the example below. So when the footer changes in one document, I need to change this footer in every other single document.
    Is there a possibility to use some kind of template, one single document,  that can be placed in different files , which is still editable afterwards?
    Thanks in advance.
    I'm using Photoshop CS6

    In a single document you can have several pages and these pages may have headers and footers that share smart objects.  If you replace the contents of the an embedded smart object on one page page that is shared on an other page the pages you will see both pages contents are changed. For they share the common object.   It is also possibly to have independent smart object layers. It depends how you create the layers in the single document.
    Example one sharing a smart object hi-light a smart object layer and use menu layer>Duplicate Layer... This will create a second smart object layer that share a common smart object. Each layer has is own associated transform. Do it again and you will have three layers the share a common smart object. So you can use each layer associated transform to position and size the layers contents. Make a picture package for example. When you hi-light any of the three smart layers and you use menu Layer>Smart Objects>Replace Contents... all three layers contents will be replace with the new smart object.  Care must be taken to replace the smart object with an identical size object for only the object is replaced the three associated transform for the three layers are not replaced or changed.
    Example two independent smart objects  hi-light a smart object layer and use menu layer>Smart Objects>New Smart Object via Copy.  This will  create a second smart object layer that has it own embedded smart object copy.  Do it again and you will have three all have independent embedded smart object that are identical.  However they do not have to remain identical.  For example if the first smart object layer was created by using ACR to open a RAW file as a smart object layer the embedded object is a copy of the raw file and its associated RAW conversion settings.  Double clicking on one of the smart object layers and you will see ACR open on its embedded RAW file with the embedded RAW conversion setting.  Changing these settings will update the layer smart object content with new ACR setting and pixel when you click OK in ACR. Repeat for the third and you will find you have three different raw conversions in Photoshop you can mask and blend together to bring out detail.
    I think what your missing is that a smart object contains a copy of the original object.  Changing the original after creating a smart object layer in document will not effect the smart object layer at all. Its independant from the original having a copy of the original. Only changes to the smart object layer and its embedded smart object effect smart object layers.

  • This file does not appear to be a photoshop file error.

    Hello,
    I know this has been covered a few times already, but none of the previous threads about it were able to help my situation.
    Ok so here is what i did:
    Exported a JPEG from a timeline in FCP. Brought that JPEG into PS (i am using CS3), and changed the image size from 1920x1080 to 720x480. Then saved as a JPEG, didn't tick any boxes, just used default save as settings.
    I then brought those images into my Encore DVD Project, added them to the library, then placed one into a already made menu, and "sent to back".. so it became the new background. I did this with two menu's today. Note i have actually done this same exact process many times without problem. I then tried to build a dvd image of the project, and i got the "this file does not appear to be a photoshop file". Now it won't even let me open those menu's (plus another one, which i made a long time ago, and have even successfully built DVD's with), to edit them. I tried removing all the new JPEGS i added today, from the library, but still i get the same message.
    The menu's that i now can't open, took a very long time to make, and i need to have this DVD completed ASAP.. as it is being released world wide in a couple of weeks and i need to get it replicated. So i don't actually have time to remake these menu's. So if anyone can help me, that would be much appreciated, as i have studio exec's cracking down on me.
    Thanks in advance :-)

    Now, if one Imports the JPEG with its extension changed to PSD as a Menu, then the Menu is created, including the necessary Layers. The Menu is NOW a PSD, and when Opened in PS will reflect the Layer structure (try this at home). If one had constructed Buttons in the JPEG, they would now only be graphics on that one single Background Layer in the JPEG. They would not function as Buttons, but could be useful graphics for other things. One would then need to add real Button Layer Sets to the PSD to be able to add any navigation.
    Back in the post above, I suggested doing the Save_As to JPEG to see how things get changed. Use that in another test - Import that JPEG as a Menu. In Encore, try to Link to what had originally been Buttons in that Imported JPEG. What happens? Can you Link to them, even though you are now working with the created PSD?
    Now, add a Button, or two, from the Library. Choose Edit in Photoshop, and look at the Layer and Layer Set structure. Things have changed from the original JPEG, with only the Background Layer. You now have that Library Button's Layer Set structure.
    Good luck, and hope that this helps,
    Hunt
    Here are looks at the structure, using the Library Menu Business>Clock:
    The Menu in PSD with the Layers Palette Open
    Same Image With Layers Flattened to Save As a JPEG
    What the JPEG Looks Like As a Flattened JPEG
    The only way to Import that JPEG into Encore as a Menu would be to change the file extension to PSD, but what appear to be Buttons would NOT be Buttons, but just static pixels in the Background.

    How do I find out the size of each individual element within a photoshop file as need to replace some elements?  Thanks

    What do you mean by "Elements"?
    Elements in a flat image or Layers?
    Could you please post a screenshot with the Layers Panel visible?

  • Find and replace text in multiple Photoshop files?

    Hi there,
    Let us say I have six Photoshop files: 1.psd, 2.psd, ..., 6.psd. All of these files contain the word “LoremIpsum” in random text layers, within each document. Is there a way I can search for “LoremIpsum” in all documents and replace it with “Dolor Sit Amet”, all in one go? This is just an example, I need to replace various words, not just one.
    I have tried "batch find and replace" software (including powerful tools like Power Grep) but they do not work with psd files… Is there a javascript of external plugin for this kind of task?
    Thanks!

    You’re welcome, advice given here is free.
    If you want to donate something nonetheless you could do so over at
    http://ps-scripts.com/bb/
    Many of the same people used to contribute there as here and I for one have benefitted considerably from their generous advice on Scripting issues.
    A Script can read (or create) txt files, but I do not have a lot of experience with this.
    This might work (amend the line »var theTexts = readPref ("….txt", false);« according to your txt-file’s path):
    // replace text elements in type layers;
    // 2013, use it at your own risk;
    #target photoshop
    if (app.documents.length > 0) {
              for (var n = 0; n < app.documents.length; n++) {
                        app.activeDocument = app.documents[n];
                        app.activeDocument.suspendHistory("replace text", "main()")
    // the opertation;
    function main () {
              var myDocument = app.activeDocument;
              var theTexts = readPref ("….txt", false);
              var theArray1 = theTexts.slice(0, Math.round(theTexts.length/2));
              var theArray2 = theTexts.slice(Math.round(theTexts.length/2), theTexts.length);
              alert (theArray1.join("\n")+"\n\n\n"+theArray2.join("\n"))
              for (var b = 0; b < theArray1.length; b++) {
                        replaceText (theArray1[b], theArray2[b])
    ////// reoplace text //////
    function replaceText (replaceThis, replaceWith) {
    // =======================================================
    var idreplace = stringIDToTypeID( "replace" );
        var desc22 = new ActionDescriptor();
        var idnull = charIDToTypeID( "null" );
            var ref3 = new ActionReference();
            var idPrpr = charIDToTypeID( "Prpr" );

        desc22.putReference( idnull, ref3 );

            var desc23 = new ActionDescriptor();
            var idfind = stringIDToTypeID( "find" );
            desc23.putString( idfind, replaceThis );
            var idreplace = stringIDToTypeID( "replace" );
            desc23.putString( idreplace, replaceWith );
            var idcheckAll = stringIDToTypeID( "checkAll" );
            desc23.putBoolean( idcheckAll, true );

        var idfindReplace = stringIDToTypeID( "findReplace" );
        desc22.putObject( idUsng, idfindReplace, desc23 );
    executeAction( idreplace, desc22, DialogModes.NO );
    ////// read prefs file //////
    function readPref (thePath, binary) {
      if (File(thePath).exists == true) {
        var file = File(thePath);
        file.open("r");
        if (binary == true) {file.encoding= 'BINARY'};
        var theText = file.read();
        file.close();
        return String(theText).split(",")
    In this case the comma is used to split the text into Strings in Arrays, if your search/replace texts include commas you could use something else, I guess.

  • Every time I try to create a new button I get "photoshop file error -1"

    I'm creating a BluRay set of discs. I'm on number 4 and there will probably be 12. I use the previous discs as a template for the new ones to save huge amounts of time. I haven't had an issue till I opened my project today. Usually I right click on a menu, edit it in photoshop, save it back in, and then I right click the new elemnts and turn them into buttons. I've made dozens of menus like this. Then today I get "photoshop file error -1" that pops up every time I try to make something into a button. I deleted the menu I was working on and used a different menu to rebuild it but I get the same problem. I then opened the photoshop file and saved it to a different location outside the project and then imported it into Encore. Same problem once I tried to make buttons. I also tried trashing the preferences. No Luck. I really need to get this working. It has completely destroyed my ability to get this job done. Ideas anyone?
    If it helps, I am on a Mac running OS X 10.9.1. Encore is version CS5.1.

    I thought there ought to be way to add buttons from the Encore library, but I don't think we found one.
    Best case: add menu from the library with buttons like what you want. Change background etc.
    I like working that way rather than adding things within Encore.
    Worst case: add a menu with the buttons you want; "edit in photoshop" and also "edit in photoshop" your menu; copy paste to your menu.
    You can also directly open library menus; add buttons etc from the encore library folders. I would make a copy of them first. Encore imports a menu from the library to your project; it is never working on its master copy.

  • How can i turn a photoshop file into a website with knowing code? can i upload Muse or DreamWeaver?

    How can i turn a photoshop file into a website with knowing code? can i upload Muse or DreamWeaver?
    I created a few images (pages for a site) on photoshop and want to turn them into HTML code for a website- Can i Just upload the file into one of these programs and make a file with the correct code imediatly?
    I was reading about using EDGE Reform but i did not understand if i can create the code with it, in the end it says it still needs to be sent to website developer after?

    You need to look at Dreamweaver as a code editor. You need to learn to create good, clean HTML code with style sheets to make websites with Dreamweaver.
    There are tutorials that will take you from a layered .PSD file to HTML. Here's a good one:
    http://net.tutsplus.com/tutorials/site-builds/from-psd-to-html-building-a-set-of-website-d esigns-step-by-step/
    Adobe's Muse is a semi-WYSIWYG website layout creator for small websites (1-5 pages). But there is no way you can go from a .PDS file to Muse, you have to start the site in Muse.
    I have seen a few Muse sites and they're OK, but there is some code that Muse creates that is kind of odd. If you want a good, clean website that will work for you or your business, Dreamweaver is the best choice. Alternatively, you could hire a pro.

  • I can no longer open PSD Photoshop files on Preview

    I can no longer open PSD Photoshop files on Preview since I installed Snow Leopard on my White MacBook. Whenever I double click a PSD file, it opens in Photoshop.
    I used to force PSD files to be opened with Preview by "Get Info" (command + I ) and then Changing the option "open with" to Preview.
    I also tried draggin the PSD file onto Preview, nothing happened.
    Did Snow Leopard stop PSD support, or I'm missing something??

    No, I can still open psd files in Preview, no problem, from both Preview's "Open" dialog and by drag 'n drop onto its icon. It opens simple psd files without error, files with an alpha channel may or may not open correctly, layers will display the topmost layer, if that layer has a mask it displays incorrectly. In short, nothing seems to have changed.

  • How to stop Leopard corrupting CS2/CS3 Photoshop files?

    Ever since upgrading to Leopard 10.5.3 (including updates since then)--the DAY AFTER I installed 10.5.3--I have had intermittent corruption of Photoshop files (.psd, .tif, .jpeg). The only constant from the dozens of times this has happened is that it happens when I am saving in Photoshop; Photoshop freezes up, won't shut down; I have to manually reboot; and then the file I was saving AND files that had been saved in the last several hours (and were okay) have been corrupted into Mexican rugs. I repeat, files that were saved and opened and previously found to be okay ARE THEN RETROACTIVELY CORRUPTED along with the file I'm currently trying to save. Also, when Photoshop froze, before shutting down, I've tried opening recent files with Preview and they look okay, and I take captures of the images before I shut down, and after reboot these are corrupted as well. This has been going on for six months, unpredictably. It has happened with lots of things running (iTunes, DVD player, podcasts) and little running; with a full desktop and a clean desktop; saving to desktop, Lacie drives, and different internal drives on my G5. Apple Store says nothing wrong with my machine, I've wiped my drive and run Disk Warrior--no problems. The only constant is that I never had this problem prior to Leopard 10.5.3 and have had it ever since the day after I did that upgrade, and subsequent upgrades. It started with CS2, so I upgraded to CS3. It still happens, however unpredictably. I also noted tonight when it froze that after reboot, I couldn't use Spotlight for ten minutes because the OS was "indexing". Error messages include "Could not complete your request because an unexpected end-of-file was encountered", "Could not complete your request because the file is not a TIFF file (it is)", "Could not complete your request because of a problem parsing the TIFF file", " Cannot open file because it was created with different version of Photoshop (not true)". No other file formats or files are corrupted, only Photoshop-created files.
    Please note that Apple’s release of 10.5.3 caused corruption of PS CS2 files when saved over networks, instigating upgrade 10.5.4 days later. I never had any problem like this with Panther or Tiger; indeed, I wish I’d never upgraded to Leopard due to the lost hours and income this corruption problem has created. But I did, and now I’m stuck. Any solutions out there?

    If you're seeing issues with files from multiple applications, I'd suspect corrupt sectors on your hard drive. Do you have an external/another drive you could install OS X and your applications on and see if the symptoms persist?
    Otherwise, here's another suggestion:
    If I was dealing with your issue, here's what I'd do.
    1) Backup my data--not a clone of the drive, since you're having issues.
    2) Erase the drive and reinstall OS X. Do not bring in any applications yet.
    3) Apply all OS updates.
    4) Reinstall one 3rd-party (non-Apple) software application. Test this for a few hours or a day and see if any issues pop up.
    5) If things are still error-free after a day, make a clone of the drive to an external. This way, if any changes you make cause problems, you can erase the internal and then restore your copy of the clone to the internal.
    6) Install another application, and repeat the steps.
    Best of luck to you!
