PHP crashing Apache process on 10.6.x
I have the stock Snow Leopard versions of Apache and PHP enabled on my iMac (a 2006 running the current 10.6.8). It is set up for local development testing only (host entries like mysite.local 127.0.0.1 and Apache config entries), and things generally work fine. However, occasionally I'll load a PHP file, edit the source code (using BBEdit), and quickly switch back to the browser and reload. Every now and then the reload takes a few seconds longer than it should, and it turns out the httpd process handling it had crashed (and presumably was restarted). The crash logs generally look like this:
Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: 0x000000000000000d, 0x0000000000000000

My guess is that apache or php has cached the script file or a file system reference to it, or something related to it, and editing change/save somehow invalidates this without its knowing, or the browser refresh comes so quickly after the save it hasn't received some notification from the file system. This has happened over a year or two with whatever versions of apache/php were current with OSX 10.6.x at the time - it isn't new, and in my case it is more of a nuisance than a showstopper.
I was just wondering if anyone else has ever run into the same issue - I'd be interested to know if it goes away with Lion, for instance, or if anyone has seen something similar with custom builds of PHP.

Apache Process Runner has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
how can i remove this problem?Jim,
Thanks for all your help. Sure enough, an MOV file works just fine and I may have tracked down the problem: the video, I'm sure caused from the source tape, lags towards the end-it seemed like every time I scrolled towards the end of the AVI it would crash. Still seems mighty peculiar that it would crash the system each time.
Thanks,

PHP and Apache, Bah Humbug
Setting up PHP and Apache, I was following this: http://developer.apple.com/mac/articles/internet/phpeasyway.html
I did the step to turn on "web sharing", and the "your computers website" link opened up the local page no problem. When I copy and pasted the content in "enabling PHP in apache" to terminal, I thought it worked... but now neither of the links work. Both say something like "Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at....". Any ideas?Safari says this:
Safari can’t connect to the server.
Safari can’t open the page “http://192.168.1.100/” because Safari can’t connect to the server “192.168.1.100”.
I tried restarting apache with "sudo /usr/sbin/apachectl restart", but no luck, still get same messages in browsers.
The computer's site (not personal) DID work when I started following the tutorial, but I only got half way through. I believe it stopped working when I copy/pasted the part from the tutorial. Any ideas? Can I completely reboot the process somehow? -
How to get the data from mysql database which is being accessed by a PHP application and process the data locally in adobe air application and finally commit the changes back in to mysql database through the PHP application.
If the data is on a remote server (for example, PHP running on a web server, talking to a MySQL server) then you do this in an AIR application the same way you would do it with any Flex application (or ajax application, if you're building your AIR app in HTML/JS).
That's a broad answer, but in fact there are lots of ways to communicate between Flex and PHP. The most common and best in most cases is to use AMFPHP (http://amfphp.org/) or the new ZEND AMF support in the Zend Framework.
This page is a good starting point for learning about Flex and PHP communication:
http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/flex_php.html
Also, in Flash Builder 4 they've added a lot of remote-data-connection functionality, including a lot that's designed for PHP. Take a look at the Flash Builder 4 public beta for more on that: http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/flashbuilder4/ -
Upgrade PHP and Apache on 10.6.8
I'm thinking of upgrading PHP and Apache that were installed as part of 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard) to their current versions.
How do I do it?

My merchant account company is raising my rates and making me buy new software. I am looking for a different solution and anyone familiar with credit card processing may be able to give me some good advice.
Up until now, I used software that I installed on my computer that would enable me to process transactions over the Internet. My question is: When someone gives me a credit card number, can I process credit cards using a secure page coded with php? I have a dedicated IP, I can get an SSL certificate, and I can sign up with a credit card gateway like Authorize.net. Why would I need a merchant account (who will charge me a percentage of everything I make)?
There are a number of good php credit card processing scripts available. Can I bypass the merchant account company using a php page that will process my credit cards?Hi John
The php code and the process are tightly related when it comes to processing your own credit card transactions and then passing them on for payment authorisation.
All the items must be done on secure server section of site, and will depend on if you wish to create a user account or not, this is for the non-user account
Customer fills in Their details on order form, (Name address, credit card info, etc.)
Details stored in temp database for such transactions via a php back-end script, using encryption for credit card details.
Customer is then shown a confirm page, with the details of the order, only the last four digits of the credit card number are shown.
If the user clicks 'place order' another back-end php script transfers the details to a permanent database and send the details for transaction conformation to your credit card authorization gateway.
Payment status sent to another back-end processing script for completion of transaction, this is often done via ipn or similar system.
Confirm payment and details are displayed to the customer, along with your transaction number, (this one may be omitted) and customer order no.
That's basically the procedure, the scripts can be on the same page using functions, or separate scripts if using procedural code. There are obviously many variations on this procedure but this one is probably the most common.
The use of 'secure pay' adds another two steps to this procedure in that the customer is sent to their card providers site for a second step to the authentication. There they must give a user name and password, (previously agreed and confirmed, if not it gets more complicated) in order to confirm that they are the card holder, before the actual card transaction can continue. To give you some idea of the complexity of the 'secure pay' set-up, the general extra cost can range anywhere between $1000 and $3000, (depending if done within web site development budget, or as an extra) converting from U/K £ to $.
BTW, The secure pay is normally used by bank card processing, these used to be know as 'Merchant Accounts', but paypal and others started using this term for their accounts which complicated the issue, the bank processing is what I am referring to with this term, and the fact that visa and mastercard use a different processing procedure is why I say, 'avoid'.
(Sorry if this explanation is a little long, but once you go outside the standard card processing, it does get more complex).
I came across a web site (hotscripts.com) and found some PHP scripts
that
process credit cards.
Unless you are happy adding extra security checks to the code to validate your site is the one using it, try to avoid any scripts that are 'in the public domain'. This is not said with any prejudice or doubt regarding the code, more that once you process your own credit cards you become completely responsible, (legally) for any fraud or misuse that results from your scripts/site.
One other item is that I would recommend using PHP:PDO with MySQL transactions and bound-parameters/stored procedures for this, mainly because they adds extra levels of security and redundancy to the procedure, which is not possible using the standard php/mysql code.
Hope this clears a few details up.

Hello,
Is there a simple way to enable php and apache on my new imac? So I can test my website locally. Hopefully its not a lot of steps. I have seen a lot of tutorials by using google. But they involve terminal and I don't know that well to be able to mess with it. I don't want to ruin my computer. So any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kash_MoneyAnd to answer your first question, "how can I use a .html extension page" see http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5850167
which is, however, for Tiger. On Leopard, the relevant file is /etc/apache2/httpd.conf and it turns out that /etc/apache2/other/php5.conf is even more relevant for exactly what you want.
Specifically, first read the first paragraph therein for why you should do something else instead. However, the hopefully not too crazy instructions (sorry, but the only way I know how uses the Terminal and emacs, so due to your Terminal-phobia I'll give detailed instructions and hope I'm not insulting you too much), will be for what you want, not for what I think you should do. The Terminal+emacs instructions are needed because /etc/ is a hidden directory owned by root, which makes it hard to use TextEdit to edit it.
So open a Terminal , and type
sudo emacs /etc/apache2/other
emacs is a text editor that works inside the Terminal, and which, for the uninitiated, has weird key bindings. You'll probably see something like
<pre style="background: #eee">
<IfModule php5_module>
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
<IfModule dir_module>
DirectoryIndex index.html index.php
</IfModule>
</IfModule>
</pre>
Press the down arrow key, ctrl-e, and type " .html". The file contents should now look like
<pre style="background: #eee">
<IfModule php5_module>
AddType application/x-httpd-php .php .html
AddType application/x-httpd-php-source .phps
<IfModule dir_module>
DirectoryIndex index.html index.php
</IfModule>
</IfModule>
</pre>
Type ctrl-x ctrl-s to save, and then ctrl-x ctrl-c to exit.
Restart the web server, either by typing
sudo apachectl restart
or by going into System Preferences and unchecking, then checking web sharing. -
Just got a new iMac on Tuesday. Since setting up, Safari crashes often but with no discernible pattern. (Haven't been able to link it to specific sites, actions, scripts, etc.)
Checked extensions and have none but turned them off anyway.
Safari 6.0.1, OSX 10.8.2, 2.9 ghz and 16gb ddr3.

I'm not saying you're incorrect, but is Apple's QC process slipping that much?
FWIW, I'm having the same exact problem - Safari.app crashing without any detectable pattern or logic. I found this post after Googling "com.apple.webprocess". I was wondering if this was something like a .plist that I could delete, reboot and Mac OS X would rebuild/re-install based on a receipt file. I'm going to hold off now because I want to see if your suggestion works.
I've had my doubts as to if people actually read through crash logs, but here is mine:

Rawtherapee crashes when processing images.
Rawtherapee was recently updated, now whenever I go to process images in queue it crashes with an error message of 'segmentation fault'.
Awhile back, I managed to erase my local pacman cache, so there could some library RT is dependent on missing, or not rather, failing to be updated. I guess my questions are, is anyone else having issues with RT? How can I find what I am missing?
Also, if I install the AUR package, will I lose my edits?
Thanks!

What edits?
Edits I've made to images in the queue
karol wrote:rawtherapee should be working. Make sure you have a fully updates system before you open a bug report.
I'm not filing a bug report, I am trying to sort out if there is a problem with my system! Everything else works fine. I am now updating.
I also just noticed that RT will process some images, and crash when process others. Unfortunately, while the changes I've made to images in the queue survive crashes, the ones in the editor don't. -
Cannot run PHP in apache server.

ITunes crashes when processing purchases after restoring HD from Time Machine
Ever since I had to restore the HD on my MacBook Pro last weekend, iTunes crashes each time it tries to process downloaded files. Everything elses seems to work fine after restoring my HD. Any ideas?
I've already tried re-setting my Apple ID password, authorizing and deauthorizing and then authorizing my computer, deleting the partially downloaded files in the iTunes library and starting over, and looking into the settings of my Intego VirusBarrier X6 settings - not something I normally do as it usually just does its thing in the background, and I've had this running for the last year with no problems with iTunes in that all time.Sorry. I'm a bit slow today. The display sleep is normal when running off the install disc, but the HDs shouldn't sleep. Check out the tips I mentioned, since I don't use TM, I can't offer anything WRT restoring from its backups.

Snow Leopard, PHP, MySQL, Apache and Wordpress!
Hi there,
It's taken me most of the day to work this out, so I thought I should post about it somewhere and here, on the Apple forum, is the ideal location.
I'm a web developer and love the fact that my MacBook works out of the box with a Unix webserver and with little effort, I was able to set up PHP and MySQL on it. I was delighted to hear that the new Snow Leopard was shipping with the latest and greatest of both. It wasn't quite that easy when it came down to running my test sites, one of which I'm working on is a Wordpress site. Far from being daunting, the solutions to the problems I had were quite simple. The issues arose from the OS not having much exposure yet and not many people having posted their experiences on the web. It was just time consuming.
I should mention at this point that this does require some tinkering with Terminal, but not so much as to cause damage if you do something wrong.
First off Apache. Thankfully this is as stable as it always has been. All this requires to activate it is to visit System Preferences > Sharing and switch on Web sharing. Bish-bosh, job done.
Next off PHP. If you open a Safari window and run your phpinfo.php file (where ever you have it saved. If you don't, they're out there, it's a tiny piece of code which you can use to find out your current php setup). You'll find that everything is superb! PHP 5.3! Excellent! Hang on, scroll down to the date and time section. Whoa! What's this big fat warning here.
That warning my friend, has been the bane of my misery all day. Wordpress hates it. HATES IT! It causes no end of grief. So what's the multi step, multi program solution?
Open your php.ini file and add the line:
date.timezone=Country/City
(do a Google search for PHP Timezones and you will get the exact settings. It's not so good that it understands every city in the world. My setting was Europe/Dublin).
That's all. This will solve your issue of the timezone error everywhere. Stop and start Apache (System Preferences > Sharing, tick off and tick back on Web Sharing) and hey presto, error is gone.
Wait a minute, where the **** is my php.ini file. Unfortunately this is where you have to get your hands dirty. Your php.ini file is a system file which resides in the /etc/ folder. Open a terminal window and type exactly the following:
cd /etc/
cp php.ini.default php.ini
This makes the php.ini file from the default. This protects the original so if you ever need to create a new copy or if you make a mistake in the next steps, you can start again.
Next I'm going to tell you how to edit this file. This uses a program called vi (there are GUI editors out there that will save you this heartache, so if anyone knows any, please post in response. I think TextWrangler is one).
First you need to set the php.ini file so you can edit it. Type in exactly as follows:
sudo chmod 777 php.ini
Sudo is the superuser commmand. It may not be needed, but stick it in anyway. If you are asked for a password, put in your normal password (that you would be asked for say if you were installing something you downloaded).
At the next prompt, type in:
vi php.ini
This will open the php.ini file. Using the up and down keys, find a blank line in the file. You will notice that alot of the lines start with ';'. These are commented lines. Once you find a blank line, press 'i' to insert text. Your screen will now say '-- INSERT --' at the bottom in red. Type the following in exactly (you will NOT be able to cut and paste):
; Set PHP Default Timezone
date.timezone=Europe/Dublin
Substitute "Europ/Dublin" with your own timezone. When you are done, press escape. Now type in the following:
:wq!
The colon is important (not a typo on my part) as this tells vi you are going to run a command. You should now be back at your prompt. Now you need to reset the permissions on the file. Type the following:
sudo chmod 444 php.ini
And that's it. That's your PHP setup and finished. If you run your phpinfo.php file now, you should see your timezone under the date and time where you were getting the error before.
Now the MySQL. This is a bit of fun because, even though MySQL ships with the system, it's not exactly set up correctly! So once again into terminal.
This time go to the local directory:
cd /usr/local/
If you type in:
ls -al
You'll get a directory listing. This has the MySQL folder listed as mysql-5.0.77-osx10.5-x86 (or something! I did that from memory!). This IS the MySQL folder but if you, like me, had previously set the MySQL Preference Pane in your System Preferences, then it won't be able to access this. Type the following command:
sudo cp -R /usr/local/mysql* /usr/local/mysql
This should copy everything into a folder called mysql. It takes a couple of seconds (first time on my machine it was a good 20 seconds) to run so be patient. Now you need to do the following:
sudo chown mysql:mysql /usr/local/mysql
This sets the owner and group of the mysql files to 'mysql'. If you go back to your MySQL preference pane in System Preferences, you should now be able to start it (something weird about it makes it require to close and reopen the System Preferences window before it can open the MySQL pref pane. This is normal, just click ok).
The bit that got me here, is that I thought that my activation of the MySQL was actually a new install. I tried everything to change the root user and password for MySQL but in fact, if you had it installed on Leopard, prior to upgrading to Snow Leopard, all your users and passwords are the same. If you HAVEN'T installed it before, I recommend you read the Post Installation Customisation (section 2.3) on the manual for MySQL 5.1 on http://www.mysql.com
So that's about it. All that remains is to test Wordpress. I have phpmyadmin installed (I've heard CocoaMySQL is very good, like iTunes for db's so I'm gonna check that out later) and was able to create the new wordpress database. I changed the settings in the wp-configure.php file to match my setup but nothing worked. I changed the host from '127.0.0.1' back to 'localhost' (a common complaint of the wordpress setup) but no joy. Then I changed the host back to '127.0.0.1' and added the port :3306 (so the full host is '127.0.0.1:3306') and bingo, the install worked, my database setup and my test site worked.
So that's it! Many of you out there will say, why didn't you just use MAMP. I did use MAMP, but I also got the Timezone issues and it took far more tinkering and hacking to make it work. I decided that, as my lovely MacBook now running lovely Snow Leopard had the lovely newest versions of PHP and MySQL installed, I'd rather get them working than use a runaround with MAMP. I'm a happier camper for it.
I hope this helps some of you out there. I don't personally have a blog yet, but when I do, I'll post this up there for all to access. I may even add screen shots!!! But seriously, I hope this helps you all out with your installs. It's so handy to have all this stuff straightaway with Snow Leopard, it's just a matter of getting it to work.
All the best now,
THmmmm... I did a clean drive install of Snow Leopard because I used to do it once a year with Windows and hadn't done it in 3 with my MBP.
First, my httpd.conf file had the line enabling PHP commented out, so when I went to see my simple file with phpinfo(), I saw the source. Saw your post, thought it was the timezone, fixed that (which will probably make wordpress happy when I get it running), and it still didn't work. Looked at the httpd.conf file, found that PHP was disabled by default, fixed that line, restarted the server, and my phpinfo() worked like a charm.
Also if you want to edit config files, I use TextWrangler's "open hidden files" option.
But... I have no /usr/local directory at all. Doesn't exist on my machine. Checked the options in the base install and MySQL isn't offered as an option. Checked the optional installs and MySQL isn't there. Even letting spotlight search for hidden files, the only files with MySQL in their name were from php scripts in my web folders.
There's some stuff about installing/compiling from source.

Dunno if I want to go down that road quite yet. -
How do i set up a PHP,MYSQL,Apachie server on my macbook
I play a well known MMORPG (WoW) and my guild recently lost there site due to owner of the site leaving the guild, i had previously mentioned i had a little experience in designing but not developing so they asked me to develop a web site for the guild with DKP (Dragon Kill Points like currency) info, Forum and other features.
basiclly most of the work is done on the site design wise and mockups i just now have to create a forum, so i found an online document showing step by step forum development (using Dreamweaver 8 and impAKT) but a pre-req is i have to have a server set up on my system to create it i have no idea about server set up or maintence and i have never had a site published please any help would be much apreciateded on setting up a server. Thank you for your time.Apache is already running on your Mac if you are running OS X.
PHP for Mac OS X is free, and can be downloaded from http://www.entropy.ch/software/macosx/php/. There is some good instructions on installing and testing your installation. It also provides links to PHP add-ons, such as MySQL. Great page. I think it should get you started in the right direction.
