Physics for game developers book. I need to know something about this book.

1. On Amazon, the discription says it is for people with college leval math. I am only fourteen, so that won't work for me.
2. The examples are in C++
I don't care if the book is in Java, but I need a good book on game DESIGN. Is this a good book:
Game Design: The Art & Business of Creating Games
by Bob Bates. I really need to know. Thanks. Are there any other good game DESIGN books? Preferably one that is either JAVA or not made for a lanquage. Thanks.

Basic physics equations etc. isn't that hard - GCSE
maths and science is enough to get a basic physics
demo up and running. If you've not covered these areas
yet you'll want to look into trigonometry (sin, cos
etc.) and the equations of motion (dealing with speed,
acceleration etc.).This is not true.
Figuring out the forces will give you some set of equations that relate accelerations, velocity and positions with some properties of the physical system you have. This is a system of second order differential equations, more or less complicated to solve, if you want to get position and velocity over time from it.
To solve this symbolically or to be able to write an algorithm that solves this numerically is something you learn at University, except for some very easy cases.
The book explains some of this.
Look at it but don't despair.
It is good enough if you get a physics engine in your hands, thus some ready coded routines that do the job of solving for you.
I believe that book has some.

Marc

  • I need to know something about computers

because I am basically and illiterate when buying one hehe I had  a Satellite that had 256 MB and 40 Gb with 260 GHZ Celeron and found it a bit slow at times but it was sufficient now that it met with cake and icecream crammed into the keyboard I have to go get another one. I do online texting and basically have 4 or 5 pages open at once and I use skype. i have all my pics and music on an external drive. i use cricket wireless internet. what i need to know is what is more important for me to look at the whole 256 mb or the 40 gb or the ghz thing? also heard skype and toshiba dont work well but i just use it for ims not the whole phone thing. anyone someone help me please

They are all important in some way. The faster the CPU (the 260Mhz Celeron)is the more it can do in a short time. The more RAM you have the more smoothly your system will run when using multiple applications. The hard drive size is usually dependant on what you want to do and what you plan on installing. But given the fact you said your music and pics were stored on a external HD would at least lower the priority of a large hard drive. A netbook or lowend laptop would do you just fine. I would go with what ever gives you the best processor and largest amount of ram that is within your price range.

  • Apple tools for game developers

Gaming technology has driven Windows to where it is today. In many aspects I see Windows as nothing more than a very robust gaming platform. Microsoft's Direct X 10, though proprietary, is a very formidable tool for developers. Why doesn't Apple do more in courting and aiding gaming developers on their platform? I am seriously perplexed by this. I realize that the game developers that design for the Mac are very dedicated gamers who would love nothing more than make great gaming experiences on the Mac. Most put their hearts and souls into making games happen for the Mac, with little to no support from Apple.
I've done some research into OpenGL implementation on the Mac and I'm surprised at how much Apple is missing in this arena. Especially since so many of their core UI technologies are steeped in OpenGL. Yet Apple tends to be slow in fully adopting and exploiting the newer OpenGL technologies as they emerge. Apple could be a very strong driving influence for OpenGL, but they seem, to me anyway, to have a sort of detached interest in making it happen. For instance, OpenGL 2.0 was ratified on October 22, 2004 and yet Apple has only implemented 70% of the feature-set??? OpenGL 2.1 was ratified on December 1, 2006 and they have only brought 30% of the features to OS X? I look at the drivers for the various cards and compare it against PC drivers and Apple only implements about 75% of what PC drivers have. This has got to be horrendous for game developers.
I see all of this as a critical missed opportunity on Apple's part. I know that Mac game developers have to jump through a lot of hoops to bring PC games to the Mac because they simply do not have the tools that PC developers have. In my opinion this is inexcusable. Apple has a tremendous opportunity to make a singular gaming experience on the Mac. They have a vertical marketspace that has the potential to turn their machines into a gaming juggernaut, yet they have all the appearances of being laxadasical about the whole concept of gaming.
I can only hope that Apple reads this and, more importantly, cares enough to do something about it.

I use photoshop (you can get 6.0 at ebay for ~40-50 bucks - something similar for free would be gimp -> www.gimp.org), povray (www.povray.org), sodipodi (www.sodipodi.com), gmax (www.discreet.com), some selfwritten commandline tools for creating sheets and pngout for compression.
If you need alot of animations it's much easier if you go the 3d route: modeling, texturing, animating. One model = tons of animations. It's also easy to create new animations if you need em. [I'm talking about pre rendered sprites like everyone knows from donkey kong]
Well, you'll need alot of time until you can create decent art. And then you'll need alot of practise, because you are just way too slow.
Here are some examples for whoring and showoff purpose ;)
    raytracing (povray)

    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/hq2cpma2r.png
Pretty hard to do. It's all math. You have to write code in the SDL (scene descipting language). Note: the board on image 1 is drawn with Java2d functions - however, the color values were taken from a previous rendering.
    pixelated (mspaint, photoshop... whatsoever)
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/evil.gif
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/killbill4.gif
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/favicon2l3.gif
Takes damn long. Even that tiny 16x16 icon took more than half an hour. You'll need lot's of practise for being fast (eg 30mins for image nr2 would be fast).
    svg(scalable vector graphics - sodipodi)
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/eye9c.png
Takes also rather long. However it's easier and faster to do than pixel stuff. Also creating sub frames isn't that much work.
    photoshopping(uuuuh... photoshop and the like)
    http://people.freenet.de/ki_onyx/tr_menu.gif
This one for example was done in some minutes. Noise, motion blur, some text there, rendering filter... done!
Oh and having a scanner is nice. You can use scanned sketches for everything (except povray heh).

  • I am going to buy a macbook pro for grade 12, and I need to know wheather I should get a macbook pro or a macbook pro retina. If someone could tell me (in a very simple way) which one is,better for me and why, I would be ever so apprreciative.

Why do you need a expensive MacBook Pro?
Your attending high school and unless everyone else is rich also your likely going to be a target by the more poorer students for theft or damage to the machine.
You could keep it home, but if you need it for class then your exposed again.
Also at that age your not very careful yet, a MacBook Pro is a expensive and easily damaged machine.
Unless your made of money and so are others at your school, I would recommned a low profile, just does the job cheap Windows PC.
If it dies, gets lost, stolen or damaged because of your inexperince handling senstivie electronics then it's no big deal.
You can buy a Mac later on when your sure you have a need for it, currently there isn't much advantage of owning a Mac compared to a PC, they do just about the same things now, one just looks prettier than the other.
Since 95% of the world uses Windows PC's your going to have to install Windows on the Mac in order to keep your skills up there or be unemployed, so it's a extra headache and expense.
    good luck

  • Rikaichan (add-on) doesn't work at my office. It gives this error "Javascript application: the index for one or more dictionaries needs to be created. This may take a while on slower computers". And then the PC freezes. What should I do?

I'm using Firefox 3.6.17, and have installed Rikaichan 2.02. Once I've installed the Japanese-English dictionary, I then click on Rikaichan to get it started, and it always gives a "Javascript Application" error:
'''"The index for one or more dictionaries needs to be created. This may take a while on slower computers"'''
Rikaichan always works fine on my laptop, but I just can't seem to install it properly at work. Is there some sort of office security screwing it up?

    venicespent,
Boot into your Mavericks Recovery partition by hold down the command and R keys whilst booting. You'll see a screen that looks like this:
Click on the Disk Utility item to open Disk Utility. You should see your boot drive (usually named "Macintosh HD" unless you've changed it) in the column on the left of the screen. Select your boot partition and click on the "Verify" button. Let your Mac do it's thing - if you get green text telling you that everything seems to be OK, then your disk should not be damaged. If, however, you get red text telling you that the disk needs to be repaired, click on the "Repair" button. If the disk can be repaired, you should be good to go. If the disk cannot be repaired then the drive is damaged.
But before you do anything, make certain that you have backups!!!

If you haven't got a backup copy and if it's still in the store then you can try contacting iTunes support and see if they will grant you a re-download (there is no guarantee that they will) : http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/ - click on Contact iTunes Store Support on the right-hand side of the page

The most immediate thing you need to do is to call your credit card company and report the unauthorized charges. Your card company can contact Apple if they need additional information.
Next, log into your iTunes Store account and see if the purchases are reflected in the Purchase History. If they are, immediately change the password to your iTunes Store account, making sure it's not something easily guessed or looked up. Then go here:
    http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
and follow the instructions to report the issue to the iTunes Store. Whether or not they'll do anything for you I don't know, particularly if you didn't change the password after your iPod was stolen.
If the charges are not reflected in the Purchase History, then it's most likely a fraudulent charge to your credit card directly rather than an unauthorized purchase through your iTunes Store account in which case it will be up to your bank to handle.

  • Pretend I know nothing about this topic, because I DON'T, and help me figure out how to format bullets in 'Pages' for IPad. I turned them on somehow, and now can't turn them off, and they are popping up in all the wrong places

I think I effectively proved my point about knowing nothing about this, by posting my whole question in the title. To review, I have a 1 year old iPad, and have Pages on it for a word processing program. I somehow turned on bullets on one of my documents and can't figure out how to stop it, and they are in all the wrong places. How do I turn it off?

If your computer is on one minute before it freezes, than you have one minute to secure your serial number.
click the apple----->click about this Mac ------> click on version----> until you see the serial number.  You may have to do this a couple of times if it freezes before you have all the numbers.  A camera might help.
    Good Luck

  • I have a late 2009 iMac. I installed OSX 10.8.4 and want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a 1.5TB external HD. Are there any issues I need to know about or tips I need to know before doing this? Thanks.

I have a late 2009 iMac. I installed OSX 10.8.4 and want to go back to Snow Leopard. I have a 3TB external HD. Are there any issues I need to know about or tips I need to know before doing this? Thanks.

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups made while on Snow Leopard, then you may do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion/Mountain Lion files.

  • Is there a way to increase the number of layers in PS touch for iPad? Can Adobe do something about this?

Is there a way to increase the number of layers in PS touch for iPad? Can Adobe do something about this?  I have been using PS touch for iPad for a few years and ALWAYS end up with a message that I have reached the maximum allowable number of layers.  not to mention of course a simple tool for drawing straight lines which is a must.  I may be missing something.  I would have imagined that a respectable company like Adobe would have added over the years a small upgrade to solve these issues.
    thanks.

    Hi Patrick,
I'm working on a 30" monitor, so it's effectively 2560x1600.  It only seems to be showing 2 tracks at a time, unless there is a preference or setting I'm missing that I can't seem to find in the documentation.  Here is a screenshot:
I don't see any areas for expanding the timeline.  I can scroll vertically in the timeline, but I can't seem to actually get a larger static vertical area for showing more tracks at once.  The only vertical resizing widget is to expand the bottom or top panels, not the timeline.
    Thanks,
    Jason
