Hi-I just noticed that when I click on a pic and it appears in the Viewer, the aspect ratio is 0. When placed in a standard DV-NTSC sequence it becomes -12.5, when placed in an HDV sequence it becomes 33.33. Is anything wrong that needs adjusting or is everything still hunky-dory (That's rocket-scientry speak.)

Viewer shows material in the material's native state.
When it goes into a DV timeline, it now must be adjusted to account for non-square pixels in a 4:3 frame.
When it goes into a HDV timeline, it now must be adjusted to account for non-square pixels in a 16:9 frame.

Why is the Camera's aspect ratio different between Still to Video

Can you tell me why the Camera's aspect ratio is different when taking Stills versus the Video?
I would like to capture the stills in 16x9 as the video does. Why is this not something that could be chosen in options?

Changing pixel aspect ratio during cropping (LR3.2)

When I crop sometimes the pixel aspect ratio changes here. I.e. the pic get stretched in horizontal or vertical way/or compressed. Any body seeing this also? After some time it does change to normal, but it makes cropping rather difficult when in a hurry.

I'm not sure I understand your problem, but I think what bothers you is the technique that has been in place in LR2 already for switching between landscape and potrait format of the crop, which in LR3 can be acomplished by the X keyboard shortcut.
Moving your mouse horizontally or vertically on a locked aspect ratio, the format will change from portrait to landscape or vice versa. To enlarge or diminish the size of the crop, you have to move the mouse diagonally.

Quick aspect ratio question...

I read this somewhere on this forum but I the search didn't seem to find it.
Some of the videos I rip show up fullscreen while other show up with black bars on the sides (not the top but the sides). I have a feeling it's because I've ripped the videos for iPod viewing.
My handbrake picture settings are as follow:
640x480
with a constant bit rate of around 2100
If I ripped at 720x480 would that do the trick? But then it wouldn't play on my iPod; I don't believe. Any help would be great! By the way the ATV is working wonderfully besides this little bump, which is of course user error.

If you've upgraded to QuickTime Pro, open your finished movie in QuickTime, then press ⌘J, choose Video Track and 'Visual Settings'. You'll see something like this (..click on the picture to get a big, easy-to-read, high resolution version of it..)
(..In the bigger version of that little thumbnail, if you click on it to enlarge it, notice the poor 'jagged' quality of the writing on the sleeve of the mini-disc in the picture at the lower-left, and the word "David's" on the battery meter at middle-left..)
With that window open in QT Pro, tick the 'High Quality' box at lower-right (..the topmost of the three little check-boxes):
Click on the pic, above, for a bigger, sharper version.. Note that in the bigger, clearer version the handwriting on the mini-disc sleeve has jumped in clarity, as has the writing on the battery meter. The resolution of the video has been doubled, and is now much clearer and sharper.

Cannot correct aspect ratio

Hi,
I'm using FCP 5.1.4 and I'm having a problem with the aspect ratio of the clips that were given to me. And pardon me in advance if some of what I write sounds silly, but I'm a beginner at FCP.
I assumed that the clips were shot using the "Anamorphic" feature of the camera, since they all look 16:9.
I started the editing with a sequence set in PAL CCIR 601 w/ the "Anamorphic 16:9" checkbox ON (i.e.: checked), but from the beginning the clips did not have the same look in the Viewer and in the Canvas. I thought that was normal and that the final edit would look ok when thrown to Compressor. But that was not the case: the image occupies LESS space than either a 16:9 or a 4:3 aspect ratio!!
It seems to be letterboxed, but on the 4 sides of the screen!!
Digging further, I found out that one can activate an "Anamorphic" option on a per-clip basis, when right-clicking on it and choosing "Item Properties > Format". Which I did for all the source clips in the Browser, as well as all the items on my timeline. But it does not seem to make a difference.

As you can see, the picture in the Viewer is WIDER than the same picture in the Canvas.

Notice the checkmarks on the "Anamorphic" line.
Of course, there's something I am not doing right, but I don't know what it is.
What do I have to do so my clips in the Canvas have the appropriate aspect ratio, even if they must be squashed when working with them in the Timeline: what's important is that upon rendering through Compressor, I get a 16:9 movie.
I hope I need not redo all the editing with different settings from start!!!

Judging from the pic of your workspace, your clips are not anamorphic 16:9.
Instead, they are letterboxed 16:9, meaning they are 4:3 clips with a 16:9 matte applied, presumably in camera.
To edit with the correct aspect ratio:
Select all your clips in the Browser in List view, then control-click over one under the Anamorphic column. Select No from the contextual menu to deselect Anamorphic.
Then, alter your Sequence Settings by deselecting Anamorphic there.
Finally, select all your clips in the timeline - they'll probably still be windowboxed - and press Option-Command-V to bring up the Remove Attributes dialog. Select Distort from the Video options, then click OK.
You should then be good to go.

A few questions about:
Pixel Aspect Ratio and ciphering type of footage. Bare with me as I touch on two different aspects of what I feel are related:
1. Setting up a Comp-
Having AE decide on the correct footage being used- Via >Import footage,.(to Folder) then drag it on, or into the 'make comp icon' where AE is supposed to do a 'best guess' for the comp settings. Be it square pix or otherwise. What are the second value in brackets ? See pic
2. Interpolation-
When using two diff footage sources- If using two different source footages in a comp. Is this where I should interplolate my footage to match the existing footage and the comp settings (If I have choosen NOT to pre-comp that secondary footage?)
3. Seperating fields-
How come footage that a camera manufacturer claims to be shooting in Progressive 30 or 24p is showing up as interlaced in my comp's CP? The manual to the cam says 30p or 24p or 60i The footage was shot at 30p (for sure)
Here is a screen grab of AE's 'best guess' of that footage, showing it with an UPPER field render; indicative of HD Interlaced footage and then in the inerpolate settings - 'kinda confirming it.
Now for the way out- Render:
4. If that is in fact Interlaced and I then want to reduce the size of that 1920 footage to 66% size... Do I need to do anything in particular at this point?
For some reason I am getting an error on my end when trying to export as an AVI and reducing size to 1280
5. Is this from the Field render of interlaced challenge?
I ended up with a couple of errors and then aborted the whole file and re-imported to start over with this error. Which happend again after a redoux
So I sent it over to Prem Pro to export those MTS Files as a movie and noted AGAIN the reference to Interlaced video. "upper and lower" Prem Pro was able to use the same MTS files and export a working movie. (so those files were not corrupt BTW) Yet Note PP's output reference to that footage again as Interlaced would be...

Ref #2, You should never change the interpretation of Pixel aspect ratio on footage unless you know for a certainty that it is wrong. For example, open Photoshop or Illustrator and create a new document that is 720 X 480 pixels and AE will always interpret the image as rectangular pixels because that is a standard rectangular pixel frame size.
Unless you specifically created the image in Photoshop with rectangular pixels it is square pixels so the interpretation must be changed to avoid distortion.

So it may very well be AE mis-guessing the footage and the Upper first is a mistake on AE's part and I need to test it to find out? On that note...
Ref#3, Separating fields must be done right. Some 1080P footage is interpreted as having fields. This may be incorrect and if there is a question you MUST test the footage. Test the footage by making sure that the fields are being separated
How do I make sure the fields are being seperated? Does the window as in pic two from the top of my post confirm that or is there another test?
Then I do the following:
then selecting the footage in the project panel and choosing Create Composition from Selection, then opening the Composition settings, doubling the frame rate and stepping through the footage a frame at a time. If the footage is really interlaced then each of the frames will be different. (IE: 29.94 to 59.94fps) OK
If the field order is reversed then motion will be in the right direction then reverse, then go back to the right direction. ---I did not understand? Are you referring to Upper and Lower reverse? Direction, as in fwd and back in Time line? Sorry unlclear on my end...
Oh and HFR footage? HFR? High frame rate??
One last thing, Do all cameras shoot anamorphic, or could they as AE is showing my MTS files; are Square? (1.00) Pic #1

At 1080, a lot of footage is interlaced, and evidently your camera made interlaced footage
Me- How do you know? because of the 2nd pic and upper field first indication?
You-Even if you know for a fact that it was shot 30p, the camera captures the entire frame... but it records it as two fields. They give it a fancy name: Progressive Segmented Frame.
Me- Is this typical false advertisement of the sales divison of brands like not telling you what CMOS or CCD is in a cam just slapping HD 1080p on the side of the box?
You-AE will treat it as an entire frame if you interpret it as having a field order of None.
Me- Won't that be a problem mis leading AE on an interpret?

What is aspect ratio and how can you change it?

Please refer to my other post for more information on these photos. The photos I am referring to are the ones that appear blank in the edit screen.
When I try to export these photos to facebook using the exporter, it says that IPhoto can only deal with photos with an aspect ratio of 3:1 or lower, and that the photos selected have a greater aspect ratio. What is aspect ratio and if possible, how do you change it? This may be directly linked to my other problem with the same pics.

I'm having the same trouble. Zapplications will upload only 1920x1920 photos. With iPhoto I can't get past the automatic ratio of 1920x1440!!! There MUST be some way to customize photo size on iPhoto!! Please help!! I've tried cropping the photo to a square and still can't get past this ratio thing.

Artboard Options Ruler Pixel Aspect Ratio

In the Artboard Options dialog, under Display, there is something called "Ruler Pixel Aspect Ratio." I see what it does, but why would anyone ever change it to anything besides 1?

Help! Aspect ratio keeps changing!

Hi Everyone.
I hope you can help me with this, because I'm starting to feel like an idiot.
I've exported a slideshow from iPhoto and want to use it in a DVD. The QT export looks great. It's a 720x480 self-contained file. Yet, when I try to compress to mpeg2, with the same aspect ratio, it gets distorted. Even though the info for the new mpeg2 file says it is 720x480, it clearly is not! The frame is obviously not as wide as the original QT file and many of the pics are squeezed.
Also, if I try bringing the original QT file into DVDSP or FCP, the same thing happens.
Any thoughts? I hope so.

Why do you want to work with the iPad-formatted files?
First, they are mp4 h,264 which FCP will hate. Second, as you note, the aspect ratio is not what you need.
I'd edit the project in a 480 DV NTSC…or maybe a Pro Res sequence.

What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a "widescreen anamorphic" 16:9 SD DVD (original aspect ratio is 14:9)?

I just received the masters for a new SD DVD. I would like to author a "widescreen anamorphic" SD DVD horizontally squeezed widescreen image stored in a standard 4:3 aspect ratio DVD image frame. (On 4:3 displays, mattes should preserve the original aspect ratio. On 16:9 displays the image will fill the screen at the highest possible resolution.)
Below I've listed the specs of the Digi Beta master tapes the producers have sent to me for digitizing. I'd like to know this: What are the ideal specs for a DigiBeta master tape when authoring a widescreen anamorphic SD DVD, using material with an original aspect ratio of 14:9?
I've also listed my guesses below. Please let me know if my guesses are right. If not, please suggest alternatives (and if possible explain why.)

As such, I was hoping for advice on a more precise way of requesting the master that I need than asking for "the master that was made before the letterboxing stage." Upon reflection, perhaps I'll just do that. If you or anyone else has a suggestion about something I should add to my request that would improve the odds of them sending the tape I need, please repond. Thank you!

XML file from '08 has a different aspect ratio in FCP 6?

I have the new canon vixia hg 21 which is avchd and FCP 6 isn't recognizing it. Using Imovie to recognize the files works fine, the problem is that when you export from imovie '08 into FCP via xml, it imports fine, but I get a display issue with black bars surrounding the footage, only in the canvas. It appears fine in the viewer and in it's own sequence in the timeline. But when you mix the different camera footage together, the other being the Canon XH A1, it appears as a different aspect ratio??? What the? and for the life of me, I've re imported using 16:9, no difference...I have no idea what's going on.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You should really take this to the Final Cut Pro forum as the codecs and the interface is different for Final Cut Express.

How to fix an error in sequnece setting (aspect ratio)?

I have been working for a while on a project in CS4. I have created a sequence in it with an aspect ratio (AR) of 4:3 - worked for hours on it - but I should had the sequence created instead in 16:9. I realised it a bit too late...
So how do I fix it?
Apparently amending the sequence setting for AR cannot be done - please let me know if there is any way of doing this.
Someone suggested editing the PRPROJ file of the project - but when I opened it I was unable to detect under the sequence name (I found a few entries with it) where I can easily change the sequence to 16:9.
So then I found people suggesting I copy/paste all the assets from the sequence into a new one that is correctly configured with 16:9. When I did this - CTRL+A and Copy, then paste into a new sequence in the same project - it copied all the clips and I think also all the transitions. But the key element that it did not copy over were all the changes I have done to the sound - I have been editing via the sound mixer (in Write mode) the sound, and then also made changes to the master track volume levels. These were not copied over.
I really don't want to have to do the mixing all over again. If someone can explain how I can fix the problem in any way I would be most thankful.
While I am here asking - another 2 small questions that have been bugging me:
How I can copy and paste volume keyframes from either the master track or a clip and apply it on another clip/section of the clip that would be very helpful. This would for example be useful if I am able to find a certain volume level that I would like to apply to the desired section without the need to sit and "record" (using the Write function) those settings on the desired area. If there is any means to apply the properties on audio track this way - that would be really useful and time saving.
A best practice hint: when you try and create a sound level for a project - what PC volume level setting do you set in your PC that you use as a benchmark by which we then work out the sound level that would be created in the project? Obviously if I push my PC volume al the way up I would probably mix my sound in the project too low. And if I set the PC volume too low - than I would probably be setting the overall sound level too high and get distortion. As the movies I created would be burnt onto a DVD - what is the volume level on the PC (if there is any means of establishing a standard volume) that I need to match first before I go and figure out what level of sound the finished DVD would have? Of course I can work on say a 50% and then apply gains and volume increases based on that 50% of the max sound my PC plays out. But that sounds pretty much like a random setting and not optimised for other devices.

Your tip saved me a lot of time indeed....!
So I created a new sequence, made sure it was 16:9, copy pasted all of the assets, but then had to do the following:
1. Copy/Paste Attributes for all the video clips (these do not transfer);
2. As you suggested used the whole of the old sequence as a nested sequence in the new one, eliminating the video altogether.
I still had a nagging issue that the project would not render or export well - but that turned out to be an issue with rendeiring large files (the video was an uncut clip of almost 10GB, andother of 6GB). Splicing these into 10 minute segments and rendering them separately did the trick.
It's ben amlong Xmas weekend and endless hours spendt on this project. Yaikes!

Can you help me solve my aspect ratio issue?

I'm posting this in hopes that someone can help me solve an aspect ratio issue with a project that I have to finish by tomorrow.
I'm trying to avoid having to re-edit the entire thing.
I shot the project with my Nikon D7000 DSLR. in 720p 30p (29.97)
I am running Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 (the trial version). I have the full version of Adobe Premiere Pro CS3.
The reason I was working with the trial is that CS3 can't handle the H.264 MOVs that the D7000 records.
You can work with a timeline, but if you try to export anything, it never works. I always have to convert my footage to ProRes MOVs with MPEG Streamclip before I can work with them is CS3. That takes a lot of time and a lot of hard drive space. After much research, I found out that CS5 is the way to go for DSLR footage. I just need to save up my pennies for the upgrade.
So I thought I'd edit this short (1 minute) project with the trial to see how CS5 works with the D7000 footage.
Upon installing the trial program, I found that the project presets were limited. I knew this ahead of time because it's clearly stated on the Adobe's website.
But I wasn't aware how limited they are.
Since "DSLR 1280x720p 30p" is not an option with the trial, I was going to use HDV 720p 30p. But that was not an option either!
So basically, my only option for 16x9 30p was "DV NTSC Widescreen". It's my understanding that this is 864x480 (in square pixel aspect ratio) or 720x480 (in widescreen pixel aspect ratio) I needed the output file to be 864x486. I downsized the footage to 69% in the "Video Effects: Motion" setting so it looked correct in the project. I didn't think about those extra 6 pixels until I outputed the file and saw thin black lines on the top and bottom. My guess is that Premiere is adding black pixels because my project is technically 720x480 (1.2121)
Any thoughts on how I can get a clean 864x486 export? I'd rather not re-edit the whole thing...which I would have to do in CS3 after I spent a few hours converting the original files in MPEG Streamclip. I don't know if there is a way to export something out of CS5 and then open a new project in CS3 to make this work.

On export, just crop a few pixels off of each side; that'll let the image scale correctly to the output frame size without black bars.
I'm not running the trial, but you should still be able to create a custom sequence preset using the Desktop editing mode. Just switch over to the General tab when you create a new sequence, and choose "Desktop" from the editing modes. Set the rest of the parameters as you need them.
Even easier: once you've imported your footage, just drag a clip to the New Item icon at the bottom of the project panel; a sequence will be created matching your footage parameters. You can edit at full-resolution, and then export to your desired frame size when complete--you'll probably still need to crop a few pixels (in the Export Settings window) to eliminate the black bars.

Importing from iMovie 08 to FCE4 - aspect ratio!!

I have clips recorded in iMovie 08 (captured from built-in iSight cam) which I'm trying to import into FCE4. Using the standard FCP XML export in iMovie and opening in FCE4, the aspect ratio of all clips is lost.
I am using the built-in iSight cam to record a video blog (please don't give me flack about not using a dedicated cam), is there a way to preserve the 16:9 aspect ratio from iMovie? I have used the motion settings on the clips to attempt to restore the original aspect ratio (-33 seems to be close), but this seems terribly unscientific and mostly guess work. Thanks.

In the browser (view as list) check the Anamorphic Flag associated with both the imported clip and your sequence: both should be set. My guess your sequence is not 16:9, in this case you only have to set that flag in the browser to fix it.
Setting Aspect Ratio = -33 in the Motion tab restores the right proportions of the original video but creates top and bottom bands in a standard 4:3 video and reduces the original video vertical resolution. The anamorphic flag, instead, fixes the video aspect ratio without losing video quality.
