Picking up unicast traffic from a sniffer, but im on a switched network

I am seeing(not a lot)a conversation from, a node om my vlan talking to another node on a seperate vlan. We have turned off all possible port mirroring/spanning. It was discovered by our CSO and I was able to verify this by running a sniff on my port and I saw the asme traffic.... anyone have any ideas or suggestions... I looked through the packet in Wireshark and did not see that this was a broadcast; although i do see the standard eigrp, cdp etc......

Your CSO was looking at packets on the wire? Wow...but I digress;-)
Like srue said, if a switch receives a frame for which it has no entry in the cam table for, it will send it out on all ports. There are attacks that take advantage of this by flooding the switch with ARP replies with different MAC addresses in an attempt to fill the CAM table. I woudn't bet on that being the case here. Here's a link to get your started on some other possible causes:

  • Permit traffic from Inside to Outside, but not Inside to medium security interface

Can someone just clarify the following. Assume ASA with interfaces as :
inside (100)   (private ip range 1)
guest (50)       (private ip range 2)
    outside (0)      (internet)
Example requirement is host on inside has http access to host on outside, but it shouldn’t have http access to host on guest – or any future created interfaces (with security between 1-99).
What’s the best practice way to achieve this?

    Hi,
The "security-level" alone is ok when you have a very simple setup.
I would suggest creating ACLs for each interface and use them to control the traffic rather than using the "security-level" alone for that.
If you want to control traffic from "inside" to any other interfaces (and its networks) I would suggest the following
Create and "object-group" containing all of the other network
Create an ACL for the "inside" interface
First block all traffic to other networks using the "object-group" created
After this allow all rest of the traffic
In the case where you need to allow some traffic to the other networks, insert the rule at the top of the ACL before the rule that blocks all traffic to other networks
For example a situation where you have interfaces and networks
    WAN
    LAN-1 = 10.10.10.0/24
    LAN-2 = 10.10.20.0/24
    DMZ = 192.168.10.0/24
    GUEST = 192.168.100.0/24
You could block all traffic from "LAN-1" to any network other than those behind the "WAN" interface with the following configuration.
    object-group network BLOCKED-NETWORKS
    network-object 10.10.20.0 255.255.255.0
    network-object 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0
    network-object 192.168.100.0 255.255.255.0
access-list LAN-1-IN remark Block Traffic to Other Local Networks
    access-list LAN-1-IN deny ip any object-group BLOCKED-NETWORKS
access-list LAN-1-IN remark Allow All Other Traffic
    access-list LAN-1-IN permit ip 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 any
This should work if your only need is to control the traffic of the interface "LAN-1". If you want to control each interfaces connections to the others then you could do minor additions
Have all your local networks configured under the "object-group"This way you can use the same "object-group" for each interface ACL
    object-group network BLOCKED-NETWORKS
    network-object 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0
    network-object 10.10.20.0 255.255.255.0
    network-object 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0
    network-object 192.168.100.0 255.255.255.0
access-list LAN-1-IN remark Block Traffic to Other Local Networks
    access-list LAN-1-IN deny ip any object-group BLOCKED-NETWORKS
access-list LAN-1-IN remark Allow All Other Traffic
    access-list LAN-1-IN permit ip 10.10.10.0 255.255.255.0 any
access-list LAN-2-IN remark Block Traffic to Other Local Networks
    access-list LAN-2-IN deny ip any object-group BLOCKED-NETWORKS
access-list LAN-2-IN remark Allow All Other Traffic
    access-list LAN-2-IN permit ip 10.10.20.0 255.255.255.0 any
access-list DMZ-IN remark Block Traffic to Other Local Networks
    access-list DMZ-IN deny ip any object-group BLOCKED-NETWORKS
access-list DMZ-IN remark Allow All Other Traffic
    access-list DMZ-IN permit ip 192.168.10.0 255.255.255.0 any
access-list GUEST-IN remark Block Traffic to Other Local Networks
    access-list GUEST-IN deny ip any object-group BLOCKED-NETWORKS
access-list GUEST-IN remark Allow All Other Traffic
    access-list GUEST-IN permit ip 192.168.100.0 255.255.255.0 any
Then you could basically use the same type ACLs in each interface. (Though still separate ACLs for each interface) And as I said if you need to open something between local networks then insert the correct "permit" tule at the top of the ACL.
    Hope this helps

  • I currently have an ipad 2 that has weak strength in connecting to wifi. My kindle will connect from my upstairs, but ipad 2 will not. Is the ipad air better with connection strength?

I currently have an ipad 2 that seems to be very weak in picking up wifi connection. I have a kindle that picks up the signal from my upstairs, but my ipad will not.  Does the air have better capability in doing this?  Would think of upgrading, as my ipad 2 also seems to be losing battery life quicker.  Thanks!

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netwhttp://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are drooping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

Note - When troubleshooting wifi connection problems, don't hold your iPad by hand. There have been a few reports that holding the iPad by hand, seems to attenuate the wifi signal.
Some Wi-Fi losses may stem from a problematic interaction between Wi-Fi and cellular data connections. Numerous users have found that turning off Cellular Data in Settings gets their Wi-Fi working again.
You may have many apps open which can possibly cause the slowdown and possibly the loss of wifi. In iOS 4-6 double tap your Home button & at the bottom of the screen you will see the icons of all open apps. Close those you are not using by pressing on an icon until all icons wiggle - then tap the minus sign. For iOS 7 users, there’s an easy way to see which apps are open in order to close them. By double-tapping the home button on your iPhone or iPad, the new multitasking feature in iOS 7 shows full page previews of all your open apps. Simply scroll horizontally to see all your apps, and close the apps with a simple flick towards the top of the screen.

  • Product bug: unknown unicast traffic storms from thunderbolt displays

    Hi All -
Periodically, a random Thunderbolt display will launch a wire rate unknown unicast traffic storm into our LAN and only stop when unplugged from the network. This typically leads to unicast flooding or at least massive trunk congestion (we now use Cisco's storm-control and block (unknown) unicast).
In any given event the transmitted frames are all the same and appear to be random data from memory. They make no sense as traffic: they have garbage MAC addresses and hence the "unknown unicast traffic storm".
We have very roughly 100 and about 1% malfunction this way once a week. We don't think it's the MBP behind the display because we switched to Thunderbolt ethernet adapters (directly on the MPBs) and have not seen an incident for over 7 weeks.
Here is a LogicMonitor record; the trailing edge of the event was when we unplugged the display.
Here's what a packet capture looks like from the outage:
Here is trace data from a different event.
The destination MAC address is an ASCII string that spells out "vertcp". Although Wireshark identifies the frame type as LLC in the first example, we believe this to be a coincidence; it's a random 436-byte piece of firmware memory. A safe conclusion is that both the LLC tag and the completely invalid ethertype in the first event is just random. Nothing in the captured frames makes sense because they aren't ethernet frames, they are random data passed to the driver due to a bug.
    Thanks
    Branden

We have experienced the same issue with increasing frequency as more Thunderbolt displays are introduced into our environment in the last year.  On a gigabit port, the display has no problem generating 800mbit/s or more of traffic (~500kpps) - which is then flooded to every port in the same VLAN (~400 user ports in our case).  For 100mbit/s users, this essentially floods them off the network.
Here is a detail I don't see mentioned above -- this happens even when a laptop/computer is not connected to the display.  The first case we had of this happening was with a display that had no thunderbolt parent device attached.  Shutting down the switchport and no-shutting it (bouncing the link on the display) resolves this until the next time it happens.
It looks like whatever crap resides in various buffers is used to construct the resulting Ethernet frames.  I did not perform a packet capture this time, but the last time it happened the entire Ethernet header was null bytes with the body being mostly-null but the same random-looking noise in the rest of the frame.  The frame was interpreted by Wireshark and others as a type of Fiber Channel, but I think that was just the default case that matched many of the null characteristics.  The exact same frame was reflected in each packet sent (as opposed to each frame being different/randomized from the predecessor)

  • JDBC sender channel running but not picking up the data from sp

    Hi,
One of the jdbc sender channels in production is running at its schedule time but it is not picking up the data from the sql side, we have checked with the sp side and they are saying that sp is running fine. No changes have been done in its configuration. Last message coming in RWB  is Retry interval started but that is of 1 day and its already been 3 days. I tried by starting and stopping the channel but of no use. The channel was re activated but that also didn't help.
Please help, what can be the reason for the same.
    thanks.

    Hi,
The JDBCadapter ( The respective channel) is definitely locked in PI . Ideally for each polling interval a lock is being created and once the processing is over , the lock should be released/deleted automatically to allow further polling interval. If the lock is not released by the system automatically, further polling will not happen as expected. ( This may affect all sender JDBC adapters as well. I would recommend to do a check in all sender JDBC communication channels)
You can see/delete the locks in Visual admin.
Go to Server>Services->Locking adapter and click refresh
The entries for JDBC adapter ( with name $XIDBAD.JDBC2XI) should be deleted by selecting those particilar entries and click delete selected locks.
If you have more than one node, then same should be done in all server nodes.
The temprory solution would be creating/copy the existing channel in ID with same properties and assign it into particular sender agreement.
But, the lock may be created again which potentailly stops all your database interfaces. Hence i would suggest to use Disconnect From Database After processing of Each messages in Advanced tab in the sender JDBC adapter.
    Hope this solves your issue.
PS: The same bahaviour would expected for all file adapter as well

  • BLUETOOTH only picks up signal from mac computers but nothing else???

does anyone have any suggestions as to getting my iphone to pick up other signals from cell phones or headsets via bluetooth every time i try and search for a device nothing happens but when its near a mac computer it conveniently picks up a signal???

You won't pick up bluetooth from another cell phone since the iPhone does not include the bluetooth profile for transferring files or data with a cell phone or with a computer, but you should be able to pair your iPhone with a bluetooth headset that is set to be discovered.

  • Flooding of ip unicast traffic

    Hi there,
I capture packets from the network from my workstation during 30 minutes without putting the port of the switch in monitor modus. So my guess was that i would only see broadcast messages and some unicast packets where the mac address is not know to the switch.
But i saw some other packets that i could not explain why i can see them. I saw for example a Syn, Ack package which in my optinion i shouldn't see since the mac address should be known to the switch.
I understand that if i see udp messages that it could be possible that i can monitor the whole traffic if the destination host never sends a packet since than the switch will never know where the machine is located and has to flood all the time. But for tcp? A Syn packet ok no problem but i think that i shouldn't see Ack of Syn, Ack....or everything else.
I hope i was clear describing my problem and to resume i have the impression that sometimes packets are flooded even if the switch knows the destination port.
Is there any way how i can verify this?
    Thanks a lot.
    regards,
    ycae

I have seen a configuration of ISA servers where the server deliberately causes all unicast traffic to the server to be flooded. It does this as part of an elaborate load-balancing technique. The way it tricks the switch into flooding all its unicast traffic is by using its NIC MAC address as the source of its outgoing frames, but giving the client a different MAC address in its ARP response. The client sends its frames to a MAC address that the switch has never seen as source, so it floods them.
There are several other reasons why a switch might flood. Are you sure these are MAC unicasts? The first byte of the destination MAC address ... is it even or odd? If it is odd, then you have a multicast or broadcast destination.
    Does that help?

  • Unable to allow traffic from remote office - Cisco RV220W

    Hi there,
I have just bought the RV220W Cisco router firewall because my DLINK-1600 got broken and now I am unable to allow access to the machines located behind this router from the machines located at a remote office. Any help would be much appreciated!!
    This is the situation:
    1. Two remote offices A and B connected by a VPN tunnel (this connection is managed by an external provider and it is properly functioning)
    2. IP range A office: 192.168.236.0/24
    3. IP range B office: 192.168.237.0/24
    4. Office A: CISCO RV220W router/firewall (the one that I´ve just bought as the old dlink has broken). This RV220W is connected to a cisco router (managed by provider) that is the one with the VPN tunnel to the other office. The CISCO router does not do NAT. On the other end (Office B) there is another CISCO router managed by the provider.
    5. Everything was working smoothly until our old router/firewall got broken and that is when I bought the rv220w. I have set up the CISCO RV220W at office A and the machines can ping the machines located at office B and can browse the internet, i.e., the traffic going out is OK and in that sense everything works smoothly.
    6. The problem is that the machines located at office B cannot access the machines located behind the CISCO RV220W and I know it is a problem of the firewall as if I capture traffic coming from office B, I can see that it is dropped by the CISCO RV220W.
    7. I have tried to enable an access rule in the firewall to allow traffic from office B (see picture below) but it does not seem to work. In the field, Send to Local Server (DNAT IP) I have entered the WAN IP of my router (you cannot leave it blank) … this rule does not work at all. I think that is not properly configured but I don´t know how to do it.
    8. As you see, the problem is that I don´t know how to set up a rule to allow specific traffic coming from the WAN (traffic from remote office – 192.168.237.0/24) to the LAN at office A - 192.168.236.0/24.
In the old router/firewall I just had to create a rule specifying the source interface (WAN) and network (Office B) and the destination interdace (LANOfficeA) and network (Office A). It does not seem that here I can do the same. i mean, you always have to point to a server ip inside the LAN??
I know it has to be a very easy thing to do but at this moment I am completely stuck. If anyone can give me some advice would be great.
Thanks a lot for your help in advanced!
    Eva

Hi Eva, the default inbound policy cannot be changed. It will block all inbound traffic. To my knowledge there is not a way around this. Access rules are the only way to 'poke' a hole through the firewall but as you note, it is for a specific host. Values such as .0 and .255 do not work.

  • Unable to pick up the file from Receive Location

BizTalk is  unable to pick up the files from receive location.
My admin console is working so slow.
It is showing the problem of snap-in as follows:
I have checked all my receive location and its masking,it is working fine.
Actually it is working fine in dev server(snap-in problem is not occuring in dev server ) but when I import MSI and binding in UAT server.
It is not picking up the file from receive location.
I want to know one more thing :if my message box database is not working fine, will it receive the files from receive location.
    Prakash

For files not received by receive location. If the Receive Location is still enabled but files are not processed by Receive Location, then check whether the host instance  configured with your receive location is running. If the host instance is in
running state, restart the host instance and try.
Regarding the error in the admin console as shown in the image, people started to see this issue with admin console from BizTalk 2009 onwards. This happens in cases like you have done some activity with console and before its been refreshed it you do more
activities like expanding the node you will see this error. Sometimes WMI is bit slowly to refresh your admin console screen. Just wait for few seconds untill the WMI screen is rendered completely. Ensure you have all the cumulative updates installed for your
version of BizTalk and also ensure the service pack for your OS is updated.
Obviously if message box is not working, files will not be received/processed. But if message box is not in healthy state this would affect all other application not just one and in-fact it would affect entire BizTalk not just Receive Locations.
To start analysing this file not been processed by Receive Location, start with checking the host instance as mentioned.

    Hi,

    Regards-

    Hi Monica,
This would be a tough job if you know the structure of the historical record tables.  You need to familiar with all those A tables first.  Any changes to one of the record would create a instance of the record before change.  AITM is for OITM, AIT1 is for ITM1 etc.  Which tables are you looking for?

I have tried to add the PS3 Media Server program to the firewall list but even though it's set to allow, the firewall blocks incoming connections for it. I confirmed this through the console logs. I think it's something to do with being a Java based program.
    Console:
    8/29/09 3:37:59 PM 0x0-0x85085.PS3 Media Server1106 main TRACE 15:37:59.547 Created socket: /10.0.1.2:5001
    8/29/09 3:37:59 PM Firewall1028 JavaApplicationS is listening from 10.0.1.2:5001 proto=6
    8/29/09 3:38:04 PM Firewall1028 Deny JavaApplicationS connecting from 10.0.1.3:50680 to port 5001 proto=6

Don't know anything about the topic, but this might help.

  • For my Rapid Video Blogging I would like to bring the traffic from You Tube

I hear there are sites as complicated and financially up there, Blogcasts, and all kind of sites that I could try to get involved with to have a place where I can try to get the traffic from watching the Video Rapid Blogs. I am not sure of the technology, from simple sites to a full on website. Does anybody have this knowledge so I could get going on getting this set up. I would need some site to bring the traffic to where what I am selling is and hopefully have a good response.
I am brand new at all of this but I have the academic and practical knowledge-working for years in teaching at the college level in exercise physiology, have gone on to get my registered dietician degree so I left school when I was done, put a small studio together where I worked mostly with memdical doctor's referrals since I had been around the rehab docs during my rotation for my exercise physiology degree.
I love the studio, but all my bad technique when I was young and my sport injuries all hit at once. I developed brain CA, had some chemo and radiation. I had to close the studio but I still have to live so I am thinking this rapid video blogging, put out some 3 minute video blogs supporting my ability to help some people who tried all kinds of weight loss methods, work with the tried and true wy but add the psych in that which can help them not expect quick-fixes, not support nutrition bars that do not fit in until they are egged in a exercise program, get rid of all the stuff 24 hour fitness tries to sell them unless they want to know how many steps they take. I could put some 3-4 minute video blogs together bringing the potential customers back to my website or whatever kind of site i would need. i m not up-to-date on all the various site for stuff like this, but if anybody want s to help e get an awareness of what is out there available to me, I would appreciate if anybody has the knowledge and practice in these areas of websites, blog sites, to help me put some classy, straight to-the-pont video info together, I would really appreciate it. I keep reading about blog spots, mad a;; types of things like websites where iI could push the traffic fro You Tube bak to this site for some sales.

I dont understand anything you said in your post.
Do you have a specific question about video production?
The forums are for individual technical or creative issues that users have with video production. I am sur someone will be able to help you, but and to get a response it is best to ask a specific question.
Is this about a technical problem you have or something about setting up a web site? If its the latter this is the wrong forum.

  • PO not picking up the Price from Info Record ???

    Hi,
Pricing Procedure and the Schema Grp is defined in Schema Determination in SPRO.
Schema Grp has been assigned in the Vendor Master.
Price has been maintained in the PB00 condition type in the Condition Supplements screen, but shows 'Zero' in the 'Purchasing Org. Data 1' screen of Info Record.
However, while creating PO the system does not pick up the Price from the Info Record and both the Condition Types PB00 and PBXX appears and display the Amount as 0.00 ? Also the system does not take the value entered in the 'Net Price' field and the Price can only be entered manually in the Conditon Type in the Conditions Tab ?
Can anyone help in resolving this issue ?
    Lucky.

    Hi Lucky
    1.Routine 6
This is an example of a pricing requirement.  This requirement is met if the condition exclusion indicator is not equal to 'X'.  <b>This requirement can be assigned to a condition type in the pricing procedure to ensure that it is not accessed when a condition record with exclusion indicator 'X' has already been found</b>.  Condition exclusion is a general tool that can be used to exclude conditions from pricing based on previous conditions that have been found in the pricing procedure.  This requirement is intended for use in MM pricing versus SD pricing.  For SD pricing, a variation of requirement '2' should be used which would also check to see if the item category is relevant for pricing
    2. You have define all your supplementory condition in supplementory pricing procedure and you have to assign this supplementory procedure to your Condition type PB00.Then all these conditions will be displayed at item level for selection in drop down.
Since the supplementory conditions are dependent on PB00, you have assign to the PB00.
If you maintain the values for these conditions in info record, these values will be copied from info to PO.

    Ramakrishna
