Pidgin 2.3.0

Hi all,
I've installed pidgin 2.3.0 and it seems that this release is a really buggy one with some nasty bugs. I've already sent a warning for out of date package on the arch's package page but this version bump shouldn't happen unless there's some patch being made previous by arch dev so at least the "random nick" bug isn't launched as stable.
I was to put this warning on a bug, but as this isn't still a testing version I've decided to send it to the forums in hope the dev will have some sort of ahead notice.
Cheers
EDIT: This bug is fixed in 2.3.1 (still in development) please refer to http://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/4062

  • [Not really solved] Video with Pidgin is not working

    Hi,
I would like to use video chat with Pidgin, but it doesn't work on my computer.
I have a webcam (:D), and it seems that it is correctly recognized because ` vlc v4l2:// ' shows me my face. I'm using XMPP (with a GMail account, but this shouldn't matter) and want to chat with someone using Ubuntu and Pidgin 2.6.6 (she has a webcam which seems to work correctly)
In the "Voice/Video settings" plugin, there are three options in the field Video → Input → Plugins : "default", "Test Input" and "Video4Linux" (and only "default" in the field Device, for the three plugins)
    "default" and "Video4Linux" give
    (21:03:34) Error with your webcam
    (21:03:34) Conference error
(21:03:34) The call has been terminated.
as soon as I try to start a video call, and "Test Input" only shows me a test pattern (but I guess this is the meaning of "Test Input" )
BTW, I wonder why there is only "Video4Linux" and not "Video4Linux2"
    The Pidgin's FAQ says this
How do I configure my microphone/webcam?
Currently, the command-line gstreamer-properties program is used. This is only available on GNOME-based systems. On other systems, Pidgin makes its best guess as to which device to use. A plugin is planned to support this functionality on other systems.
But I don't use GNOME, my desktop environment is LXDE.
What could I do to make my webcam work with Pidgin?
    Thank you!
    Edit:
    - my system is up to date
    - I have farsight2 and gstreamer0.10-{good,bad,ugly} installed

Well, the problem is not really solved actually.
Pidgin recognizes my webcam but I still cannot open a video chat.
When I try to start a video chat, the following errors are displayed in the debug window :

  • Odd Pidgin/Gnome behavior.

On my other machines (Slackware and Ubuntu) when I click the Pidgin new message icon in the notification area I would be switched to the virtual desktop that it was on.  My Arch machine brings the the chat window to the desktop that I am currently using instead.  I've tried searching the web and my config files for a way to change this behavior but I've come up with nothing.
    Any ideas?

Could it be that you have some plugin enabled?

  • How to use custom smileys in Pidgin.

Hey everyone. I can't help but notice that there is a fancy new dialog in the pidgin tools menu called "Smiley" where you can, supposedly, set smiley images to specific shortcuts. Well, I can't seem to make this thing work for the life of me. Does anyone have any insight into how this works?

Just click the add button, click the button next to smiley image and pick an image, and then type a "shortcut" in the box.
By shortcut it means the keyword to transform text to smiley.
For example, :) makes an image of the smile smiley, while (Z) makes the male icon. Just pick something that you will not type by accident that is easy to remember.

  • Pidgin - my calendar entries show up as a second status bar in my pidgin

My calendar entries show up underneath my name in pidgin, kind of like a status bar.
I cannot see it myself, but my colleagues/friends can see all my calendar entries underneath my name in pidgin!
I cannot figure out what setting to disable to ensure this is not showing up going fwd.
    Katrine

I believe this is tied to Access Rights in bcentral. If your Calendar permissions are set to Review (can read items based on their sensitivity), Pidgin will pick up the descriptions.

  • [SOLVED] KDE 4.5.2: lost icons of Pidgin, Skype... from System tray

Plasma crashed today and I lost, so called, "Default panel". After restart, I manually added panel, added System tray widget on it but System tray is no more displaying icons of non KDE applications such Pidgin, Skype and DeaDBeeF. Tried to change icon theme, played with icons folder mentioned in topic https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=103689 but so far no luck. There are not even blank spaces instead of icons. If I add System tray widget to the desktop, it also don't have those icons on it and it have blank spaces instead, say, KNotes and Klipper.
    Any help is appreciated.

  • [SOLVED] Typing delayed in pidgin and evolution

When I type something in pidgin or evolution, after a couple of seconds the screen stops updating even though the apps are receiving my keypresses. If I stop and wait for a while or move the mouse it updates the screen. This doesn't happen in firefox or urxvt. I'm using Awesome WM.
Edit: The culprit was the "unclutter" tool I was using to hide the mouse cursor

yes i see this in pidgin. it does not happen all the time. (using gnome and metacity)
and i see freeze of the GUI. may be after it plays notificatino sounds. the GUI goes gray (not refreshed) goes back to normal after a second. may be related to episode  when i saw pidgin eating 100% cpu.
it's a lot of problem i think for only one apps.
    i wonder if it's X or pidgin
i recently had problem with refresh but for all the screen too. the cursor mosue was still moving but i could not interact with anything on gnome desktop for a few seconds. almost 10 seconds. it happened 4 or 5 times.

  • XMPP service test using Pidgin

Anyone here once tested Beehive XMPP service using Pidgin.
Every time I set the domain to default it always say unknow host name. Cause I install beehive in a non-domain enviroment.
I can't leave domain as blank cause it 's required field.
When I open the beekeeper to check the XMPP properties , the doaminName is example.com
How can I resolve it ?

    Hi,
"Domain" is a required part of the JID which is the thing you use to login using xmpp. It isn't necessarily related to the domain names of your machines or organization (although it often is the same).
So, let's say your name is "Kyi Smith". Your email address might be something like "[email protected]" - i.e. it has a domain part (I won't use example.com because it'll be confusing).
Similarly, any xmpp server and client will need you to have an IM Address (or JID) that looks like [user]@[domain][resource].
So your IM Address might look like "[email protected]".
If that's the case, then you need to set the _xmppservice.domainName property to be "foo.com", and you'll need to make sure that your beehive user has an IM address that matches the domain, like:
    modify_user user user=kyismith address business_1:im:[email protected]
Then (assuming you've set up TLS as per the install guide [XMPP requires TLS be working as part of the spec]) then you should be able to login using pidgin specifying your username (as kyismith), your domain (as foo.com) and set the connect server (in the advanced tab) as whatever the hostname of your beehive server is - you should be good to go.
Of course, if you're just kicking the tyres then you could just set your users up with IM addresses of example.com domain:
    beectl modify_user ... --address business_1:im:[email protected]
and not change the _xmppserver:DomainName property.
    hope that helps,
    richard

  • Pidgin 2.6.1-1 broken (missing gstreamer0.10-base dep)

Since bugtracking is down I'm reporting this here and I apologize if I missed something obvious.
I've used pidgin for ages and the last update to 2.6.1 broke it for me:
pidgin: error while loading shared libraries: libgstinterfaces-0.10.so.0: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
From what I can tell the libgstinterfaces-0.10.so.0 lib is provided by the gstreamer0.10-base package which is NOT present directly nor indirectly in the deps section of the PKGBUILD of pidgin. The only package present is gstreamer0.10, NOT gstreamer0.10-base.
Since I'm a minimal user I also didn't get gstreamer0.10-base installed as a dep of other package which may otherwise have been pulled as a dep in the case of users who install much more packages than me.

    tut wrote:
wonder wrote:the package need a rebuild in a clean chroot
what exactely do you mean by that? I have just upgraded to 2.6.1 and the same problem as described above.
wonder probably means that the maintainer of the package (not you) needs to build it in a clean environment so that he doesn't forget to add some dependencies just because his desktop system already has them installed by other packages.
As for the regular user, the easiest solution before it gets fixed is:
    pacman -S gstreamer0.10-base
    or
    pacman -S --asdeps gstreamer0.10-base
The gstreamer0.10-base package owns the currently missing libs for pidgin, so just install it while it isn't included as a dep in the PKGBUILD.
