Ping application using runtime.exce(pingComand)

Hi,
I am writing an application that is going to automate the ping command. I am not using the isReachable() because the server that i will be testing my machines have the firewall - and i have tested the code works and does what it is supposed to do.
I am using the:
Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
Process p = r.exec(pingCmd);
where i am pinging, and getting the result from the dos:
InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
and then changing the gui appropriattly (red == dead, green ==alive). The code is working, but the gui does not get updated until the last process (ping) has been executed. As i am pinging about 20 machines, it is taking a long time for the gui to be updated.
I want to update the gui after[u] (or maybe during the ping as well ==yellow) each i get the result of the r.exec(pingCmd);, is there a way to make any threads sleep or, i am stuck.
Regards,
Amir

This is the method that i am using to do a ping, and then read the text returned (as would be seen on does when you do a 'ping ipAddress').
public String doPingCMD(String sIP) {
          String ip = sIP;
          String pingResult = "";
          String pingCmd = "ping " + ip;
          try {
                    Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
                    Process p = r.exec(pingCmd);
                    BufferedReader in = new BufferedReader(new
                    InputStreamReader(p.getInputStream()));
                    String inputLine;
                    while ((inputLine = in.readLine()) != null) {
                              pingResult += inputLine;
                    in.close();
          catch (IOException e) {
                    System.out.println(e);
          return pingResult;
This is doing a ping and returning the accurate text but it only does this one at a time. So imagin when i am having to do the same thing (one after another for 20 maichines (20 ip addresses) - it is taking very long - and the gui does not get updated untile the very last ping executes.

  • Can we run a java application using Runtime.exec()?

    Can we run a java application using Runtime.exec()?
    If yes what should i use "java" or "javaw", and which way?
    r.exec("java","xyz.class");

    The best way to run the java application would be to dynamiically load it within the same JVM. Look thru the class "ClassLoader" and the "Class", "Method" etc...clases.
    The problem with exec is that it starts another JVM and moreover you dont have the interface where you can throw the Output directly.(indirectly it can be done by openong InputStreams bala blah............). I found this convenient. I am attaching part of my code for easy refernce.

  • Monitoring a Process using Runtime.exce()

    Hi,
    In my Program, I'm using the
    new BufferedReader(new InputStreamReader(Runtime.getRuntime()                         .exec("ps -ef | grep xmlfeed").getInputStream()));
    The above statement is not returning any inputstream to the BuffredReader.
    When I gave the command as "PWD", it's returning the lines as expected.
    But it's not working even for "PS" command also.I'm running this in AIX machine.
    Any Ideas,Please help....

    Hello! And sorry I didn't reply earlier. I hope the Original Poster will find revisit this thread and it helps him.
    From your post I assumed that you were not a student trying to create some homework. That's why I felt free to simply code a solution and submit the code here. But first some remarks:
    I don't think that your code can work. Runtime.exec expects an array of type String, where the first element is the command and subsequent elements are a command line option each. I don't think you can use the pipe and call several commands using Runtime.exec, but that's just a kind of guess. YMMV.
    Running external Processes in Java is a bit complicated. Basically,
    * It's good to run the process in it's own thread. That way the main program can continue without getting stuck.
    * To extract stdout and stderr of your target process you must run two threads, one for stderr and one for stdout. Both threads extract the characters of their respective streams in a loop that runs inside the thread. Again, that way we avoid deadlocks, program getting stuck etc.
    This explanation is terrible, I know - I think a slice of source code speaks louder than words. I have attached five java files which together make a little process runner which extracts stdout and stderr in a safe manner. To run:
    * Cut'n paste them into five text files, one per class.
    * Save the each text file as {contained-class-name}.java
    * Compile the stuff
    * Run RunnerDemo (When I ran it, I got a directory listing printed on the console)
    Explanation sounds a bit sloppy, but I did it under the assumption that you are a seasoned java pro, so it should not pose any problems. Since you seem to be a different OS than I (AIX, I run Linux), the command may or may not work. Try other commands. For example, in the RunnerDemo class you could set the cmd field to this:
            String [] cmd =
                "ps",
                "-A",
                "-H"
            };This would give you a process listing (works on Linux).
    By the way, commands are passed as array. See Java documentation for java.lang.Runtime.exec (String []) for explanation of this array.
    One problem I see in your command is that the output of ps is piped to some other program. Sorry, I don't know whether my code could achieve this. All it can do is to rum one single command with command line options. But you should be able to adjust the given example, so it supports piping to another program.
    If you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

    * Unfortunately, we haven't implemented any facility to stream characters to

  • Problem with opening a file in its application using Runtime

    Dear experts,
    excuse me for my ignorance, but I am facing a problem and I would really
    appreciate some help. I am working on a java program in which I want the user
    to have the ability to save the contents of a JTable into a file of his preference (the file could be of any type i.e xls, txt, doc...) and then open this file in its
    default application (i.e the txt file through notepad, the xls file through excel etc..).
    Everything works fine with the code below, if the filePath does not contain blank spaces. I did some search on the forun and the web, and also tried to
    find a solution through the great link
    http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html but I still
    cannot solve the problem. Below I quote the part of the code (actually the actionPerformed dunction of the equivallent button) which is responsible for the opening of the file.
        excelButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener()
           public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
             //saveFileName is the File that I want to open
             String filePath = "\""+saveFileName.toString()+"\"";
             System.out.println(""+filePath);

              String cmd="cmd.exe /C start C:\\Documents and Settings\\test.xls";

    Dear BillBlalock ,
    thank you for answer!! You are very kind and helpful!! I would like to inform everybody that I have finally find another way of soilving my problem and I announce it to the forum in case somebody else encounters the same problem. Well, I soved the nproblem by using the following code:
        excelButton.addActionListener(new ActionListener()
           public void actionPerformed(ActionEvent e)
             String filePath = "\""+saveFileName.toString()+"\"";
             System.out.println(""+filePath);

  • Problem of executing a process under Linux using Runtime.exec

    Hi, All
    I am having a problem of executing a process under Linux and looking for help.
    I have a simple C program, which just opens a listening port, accept connection request and receive data. What I did is:
    1. I create a script to start this C program
    2. I write a simple java application using Runtime.exec to execute this script
    I can see this C program is started, and it is doing what it supposed to do, opening a listening port, accepting connection request from client and receiving data from client. But if I stop the Java application, then this C program will die when any incoming data or connection request happens. There is nothing wrong with the C program and the script, because if I manually execute this script, everying works fine.
    I am using jre1.4.2_07 and running under Linux fedora 3.0.
    Then I tried similar thing under Windows XP with service pack2, evrything works OK, the C program doesn't die at all.

    Mind reading is not an exact science but I bet that you are not processing either the process stdout or the stderr stream properly. Have you read http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html ?

  • Launching another Swing application from existing one using Runtime.exec()

    Hi,
    I have two separate Swing applications, say A and B. I need to launch B from A using Runtime.exec() - essentially I am launching another VM instance from one VM. I am encountering strange problems - B's main window comes up, but GUI doesn't update; sometimes B comes up and GUI updates, but huge memory leaks happen. All the problems with B go away once A is shut down. It almost looks like both the instances of VM are sharing (or competing for) the event thread. Any comments will be of great help. Thanks.
    note: There is no problem launching B if A is a console java application (i.e. no Swing GUI).

    Do you have to have the second application running in a seperate VM (process)? If not completely neccesary, then you can just invoke the static main() of the second class. If the type of the second class isn't known untill run-time, you can use Reflection to invoke the method.

  • Error while Creating a basic portal application using JDeveloper

    Hi,
    I am trying to build a portal application using the following tutorial on JDeveloper 11.1.1.5.0 on Windows XP.
    [http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17904_01/webcenter.1111/e10273/createapp.htm#CCHEGDIC|http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/E17904_01/webcenter.1111/e10273/createapp.htm#CCHEGDIC]
    I have configured all the prereqs for this tutorial. When i run the application, following message appears on the log file.
    Target Portal.jpr is not runnable, using default target index.html.
    and the webpage contains following error
    Error 404--Not Found
    From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol -- HTTP/1.1:

    2. How did you ran your application? (right clicking a particular page or right clicking your portal project and selected "run" option?

  • Hiding Tabs in PCUI application on Runtime

    Hi.
    I'm looking forward to hide a tab in a PCUI application during Runtime but i'm getting the following bahiviour:
    Let's assume i have 20 tabs and i don't want the TAB 15 to be displayed. I've used the method CHECK_ACTIVE_TABSTRIP in TAB 1 in order to delete from the list TAB 15 and "great" -
    > that works !  :-D  but..... as soon as i switch to TAB 2, TAB 15 is displayed again !!!!! does it mean that i have to redefine such method in all the MAC's and place my code for hiding the tab ?????? isn't there a BADI or kind of ? that doesn't make sence to me.
    Thanks.
    Armando Rodriguez.

    This is how it works in PC-UI...
    You can implement the logic in one method and call this in all MAC's...
    Enjoy....

  • Integration with PeopleSoft Applications Using Oracle SOA Suite 11g BPEL

    Hi,
    I'm integrating BPEL with Peoplesoft FSCM 9.0 Application on tools 8.49 using Oracle SOA Suite 11g. The BPEL invokes the web service method generated from Peoplesoft Component Interface in a synchronuos manner.
    I have deployed the BPEL in Oracle SOA Suite 11g using Jdeveloper successfully but I have problem in configuring the BPEL node in Peoplesoft side using Oracle SOA Suite 11g(FMW) . I had done the integration of BPEL with Peoplesoft FSCM 9.0 on tools 8.49 using Oracle SOA Suite 10g earlier successfully by configuring BPEL node properties as follows:
    BPEL CONSOLE : http://Host Name:8888/BPELConsole (System with Oracle SOA Suite 10g server for deployment)
    BPEL DOMAIN : default
    Using this BPEL node configuration, I was able to ping the BPEL console of Oracle SOA Suite 10g from peoplesoft and hence complete the integration successfully.
    Now in order to acomplish Business rules and other functionality, the BPEL application has been developed in Oracle SOA Suite 11g using Jdeveloper 11g. This time I'm not able to configure the BPEL node in Peoplesoft for this integration as I'm assuming there is no separate BPEL console in Oracle SOA Suite 11g. All the BPEL deployments are administered in console (11g console used for deployment of BEPL)
    http://Host Name:7001/em (System with Oracle SOA Suite 11g server - Fusion Middleware).
    So when I Configured the BPEL node property in Peoplesoft as :
    BPEL CONSOLE : http://Host Name:7001/em (System with Oracle SOA Suite 11g server for deployment)
    BPEL DOMAIN : default
    I'm not able to ping the Peoplesoft BPEL node to the Oracle SOA Suite 11g. Hence I'm not able to proceed with my integration.
    When I searched the OTN discussion forum on BPEL console for Oracle SOA Suite 11g, all threads point that there is no separate BPEL console unlike Oracle SOA Suite 10g. Also most of the articles for Integration with Peoplesoft Application using SOA 11g do not state any specific configuration setting for property of Peoplesoft BPEL node in order to integrate with BPEL 11g. The examples published in OTN still point towards screen shots of integration using SOA Suite 10g.
    So I'm not able to proceed in this regard.
    Any help in this regard is highly appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Girish

    typo error

    Hi,
    I found this document from the Oracle Open World 2009 (maybe you have found it too) :
    "Integration with PeopleSoft applications using oracle soa suite 11g BPEL" --> [http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/fmw4apps/peoplesoft/pdf/oow2009-bpel-psft.pdf]
    And this could be a little more simple, but have a good step-by-step tutorial.
    [http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/fusion_middleware/fusion/soa/BPEL_PS848/OBE_PSFT_BPEL_848.htm]
    I think you must read this docs by now, but never come amiss.
    Hope this can help you,
    By the way, if you can help me with this I'll appreciate it a lot.

    Hi Venkatesh,
    Before you can start recording any webdynpro application make sure that the below settings are done in the ecatt system and the target system , for further information refer ecatt documentation.
    Create User ECATT_HTTP in the eCATT System
    The administrator in the eCATT system must create a user called ECATT_HTTP(with a password). The user requires no special authorization but must be a system user (in transaction SU01, display the user and choose the Logon data tab. Under User Type, select System).
    Activate the Service ecatt_recorder in the eCATT System
           1.      In the eCATT System, start transaction SICF and navigate to the service ecatt_recorder.
