Ping without access point association

Hypothetical situation here: Is there a way to ping a computer with a known IP and subnet without being on the same LAN.
For example, Computer A is attached to an access point and is granted an IP of 192.168.5.202 with a subnet of 255.0.0.0. Computer B is not associated with the access point.
Is it possible for Computer B to set a static IP and subnet and broadcast a ping to Computer A (or something of the like), all without actually associating with the access point?

If I understand what you are asking. No.
Now, if computer B is part of a subnet that is not part of the wireless access point's subnet, and there is routing between the two subnets, and they are part of the same private network (They don't have to go out on the public Internet), it may be possible -- if you have everything set correctly.
What I think you are asking is -- if computer B is not part of any network, and you set an IP and a subnet mask can you talk to computer A.  Definitely not.

    HI,
i have 3 AP AIR-LAP1042N-E-K9 in the same place (Event at down town) but they Sometimes the APs even disassociate from the controller temporarily, and i see the below errors on Prime infrastructure 2.0
Load threshold violation reported by 802.11b/g/n interface of AP <apname>, connected to controller <controllerIP>
Interference threshold violation reported by '802.11b/g/n' interface of AP

what these problems and how to solve it
    Thanks,
    Ahmed

After these error done i see that error 802.11b/g/n interface of AP is down :controller.

how i can configure accesspoint to used two ssid, one for lan and one for guest this two ssid in separate vlans.  I was try like this...
i create vlans on 3750 switch.  I connected my accesspoint to switch 2960 (2960 switch is enduser switch).  I trunk the port on 2960 switch is connected to access point.  I assign ip address to BVI Interface in accesspoint static.  i am unable to ping from access point to other vlans, from other vlans to access point.
can any one help to configure access point.

  • Configuring Cisco Air 1142N Access point.

    Hi Guys
I have been struggling to configure a cisco airnet AIR-LAP1142N-E-K9 access point.
this is not my first time as I have configured similar accesspoints before.
the access point gets an IP from the dhcp server. I can ping the access point over the network.
However, when I type in the ip in the web browser, nothing comes up. there is no proxy issue.
the console(hyperterminal, connected through serial cable) shows the following error message:
    %CAPWAP-3-ERRORLOG: COULD NOT RESOLVE CISCO-LWAPP-CONTROLLER
    Many thanks

    Hi,
2106/12/25 will support 7.0.xx code. It will also support all existing APs including 3500,1140,1040.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/wireless/controller/release/notes/crn7_0_116_0.html
I don't think it is EOS atleast does not say on the website :
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps7206/prod_eol_notices_list.html
Deciding on whether you need a WLC or not is upto your budget and what features you need on your Wireless Infrastructure.. If you have $$ to spend I would recommend going in for 2504. If not you can configure them in standalone and you can always buy a WLC based system in future given you only have 3 APs.
If you need IOS code, you can either approach
    1) Your reseller or
    2) Cisco SE
    3) Call TAC support and ask CIN agent to grant access to CCO code based on what you purchased. Also explain your situation.

  • LWAPP Access points flapping

    Hi,
I have 1252 and 1260 LWAPP access points in 20 sites connected to a 5500 controller over WAN through flexconnect.
Last two weeks, i noticed that the access points associated to the primary controller keeps flapping.(ie) it stay in primary controller for a minute or two and then it goes off again and again. Moved the APs to the secondary controller. Again i see the same issue. Noticed that there is no issue with the bandwidth.
This issue happened so far in two sites. The issue happens with all the access points at both of these sites. Replaced the access points. Still no luck. So converted the APs to autonomous mode as a temporary fix. Please let me know the suggestions.
    Thanks,
    Abinaya

    Hi Scott,
Thanks for your reply...me and abinaya with in same team
yes we have a huge gap between the AP up time and Joining time
Let me tel you in how we are connected...
We have 1000's of WAN link(MPLS) connected to Data Center.
In Data Center we have this WLC 5508
20 Locations are added to this WLC(Flex Connect), each location has 4-5 AP's
    Points we observed.
When we change this AP's to Autonomus mode, its working fine. Even in autonomus mode AP has to reach DC for AAA
If the WAN link has some problem, it should effect other devices which connect to DC.
    We replaced AP's...but no luck.
This happened with different locations, different controllers.
We found the below logs in all the AP's which met this problem.

  • Preventing unwanted access points

This is just a tip that we used on our controllers that I wanted to pass along. We were having issues with unwanted access points associating to our controllers. We had a stack of older 1242s that came up missing and hit our network. On way we came up with to prevent this was to number all of our wlans above I'd # 16 on the controller. By default the default ap group allows all wlans from 1 to 16. By starting with 17 we are not allowing any SSIDs in the default group. All if our production access points are in their own ap groups. Any access point that hits our controllers that has not been configured with the correct ap group name will be in the default ap group and will not be servicing any SSIDs.
I know there are other ways to set this up but this was a tricky way for us to set it up and see who calls about there wireless not working.

    Eric,
There is another way if you have v7.3 or newer. In the RF Profile you can enable out of box which creates a new AP Group and places new APs in that group automatically. This will disable both radios which is a nice feature.

  • Is my aironet 1100 access point dead?

    Hello,
I purchased a second hand cisco aironet access point on Ebay and I am having trouble getting into the configuration program. I have reset the device back to factory defaults and I get green led's when I plug it in. I have it connected to a pc running win xp via an ethernet patch cable. I have assigned 10.0.0.2/24 to my pc and when I ping the access point I am getting over 75% packet loss. The web browser will bring up the login box after a minute but after that nothing. Any suggestions? Is it dead?
    With Regards,
    Aaron McQuaid

    Aaron,
    Did you get this resolved?
I have the exact same problem. I am using an AIR-AP1121G and I can't see the AP anywhere. I can find it on my firewall sometimes, but sometimes the IP Address changes and sometimes it disappears completely.
I am pretty new to this type of AP. We have one at work I love, but this is my first one I am configuring.
    TIA
    Bill

  • Configuring Cisco Aironet 1100 Access Point. Please help!

    Hi all,
I have dozens of Cisco Aironet 1100 access points, each is managing its own wi-fi with DHCP.
I had to disable dhcp on them because they are on a wired subnet where I am using the static IPs and don't want my wired clients to get DHCP addresses, nor someone to be able to plug the wire into own laptop and get on the network.
It's been working fine with one exception - I need to be able to ping my access points from the central site, and I can't.
What IOS command would enable ICMP echo on my access points in this case?
    Please help!

  • How to tell which lightweight access point is offline?

I may be missing something really obvious here, but is there a coherent way to tell which access point has dissociated from a Cisco controller? For example - i have a controller here with many hundreds of access points being installed. If i have say 500 access points associated and i unplug a random one, the "all APs" in the controller summary will simply drop to 499 total, not 500 total, 499 up and 1 down as i would have expected - it's therefore a bit of a nightmare to trace a missing access point when the number suddenly drops below what i am expecting based on the number i know are physically installed.
Hope that makes sense!!! Appreciate any guidance you guys may have!

    Several ways of doing this:
    1.  If you have a network monitoring tools like WCS/NCS/PI, then it is Cisco's preferred method.  You can enable WCS/NCS/PI to email alerts (personally, I wouldn't recommend it).
    2.  WCS/NCS/PI uses SNMP to poll the different WLC in your network.  You can craft your own to generate your own system (what we are doing now).

can ping apple tv from ipad
    Can ping ipad from laptop
    can ping laptop from ipad.
Apple tv never sees any other device.
    Any ideas?

Fascinating just reading about your setup. I have a WRT350N and have noticed that it will drop its speed, sometimes down to 1Mbps. It seems to do so at about the same time every day, but usually comes back to speed in about 5 minutes. In my experience, the Apple TV will disconnect if the speed falls this low. Try monitoring the Linksys with Netstumbler, Vistumbler, or just in the Windows Network utility.
Check the "lease obtained" and "lease expired" times for your router to see if that is when the network fails. I've just finished reading an angry thread over at the Linksys forum about the WRT330N where someone mentioned that the router wasn't renewing its lease.
"I cannot set it run off automatic DHCP from the WRT330N, the router will not assign it an IP every time the lease expires, causing me to have to manually set an IP on the Print server. That's annoying. Having the router drop IP's to individual machines after 12-48 hours...very annoying."
    http://forums.linksys.com/linksys/board/message?board.id=Wireless_Routers&thread .id=67412
If that is the problem, then I would consider setting up a Static IP address for your Apple TV. You can do that through the user interface -> Settings -> Network -> Configure ... (Quite intuitive as you only have change IP address and the subsequent details remain the same.)
My router assigns IP Addresses in the ranges of 192.168.1.100 ->149. The idea here is to choose an address outside of that range but is not greater than 192.168.1.253 (and should not end in the number 1). You shouldn't have to change the linksys router as long as 50 clients are assigned in that range. You'll have to figure that out by accessing your router webpage at browser address 192.168.1.1 -> the default password is "admin" (without the quotes).

    Hello All,
I am having access point 1240AG and planning to deploy ISE as a exteral radius server. I would like to know how deifferent authorization policy need to configure in AP/ISE. Whether I can use named ACL or VLANs (CoA) as a enforcement types without use of WLC. If yes then how?
    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,
You can perform COA on standalone APs you will need to have an inline posture node in order to reap the benefits of COA, you may have heard this from any vpn related deployments. If you are in the design phase of this project, you may want to purse controllers because the latest rumor is that the inline posture node may be dropped since Cisco is planning on supporting coa on all their devices once the 9.x code drops for the ASAs. However please contact your Cisco rep for an official response.
Here is the footnote in the following link: "Autonomous AP deployments (no WLC) also require deployment of an Inline Posture Node for posture support."

  • How can we disable the OSX Access Point functionality without disabling all wifi.

Curious if anyone knows a way in Lion/Mountain Lion to disable the OSX access point features.
i have about 50+ macs in our company for iOS development. lately we've had a lot of rogue AP's showing up, people bridging the internal network by activating the "become a hotspot" feature in OSX. this is a *GREAT* feature, don't get me wrong. especially the latency and ease of use.. but in our case its causing problems, and i'm looking at a way to disable the AP features without disabling ALL wifi with something like.
    /usr/sbin/networksetup -setairportpower en1 off
this is a bit too much ,it disables the entire airport/wifi. we want to only disable the access point capabilities.
any hardcore guru's out there have some advise?
    TIA!

Enabling sharing services requires administrative access, so one option is to set this and only give folks standard "managed" access. The Internet Sharing service is a process called "InternetSharing" that runs as the root user and establishes all the appropriate services for the needed connection. You could technically remove or even rename this process on systems to prevent it from being used, or remove or disable its launch daemon. These files are in the following directories:
    /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.InternetSharing.plist
    /usr/libexec/InternetSharing

  • Access point without enough power

My AIR-LAP1252G-E-K9 access point doesn't register against the controller. The switch is seeing both the MAC and the IP of the AP, but the power inline seems not to be enough. Although the switch sees the AP's IP address by CDP, this one doesn't answer the ping request.

Is this a hardware problem? What could be the source of it?
Thanks in advanced for your ideas!
    Best regards,
    Laura

    Hi Laura,
    Yes, it's most cetainly a "PoE" problem;
Powering the Aironet 1250 Series Access Point with 802.3af Power over Ethernet
The Aironet 1250 Series Access Point with one RM1252 radio module installed requires 12.95W, which is within the 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) standard. Any Cisco switch supporting 802.3af may be used to power the Aironet 1250 Series Access Point with one RM1252 radio module installed. This is ideal for businesses that chose to only deploy on a single frequency (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz). A single radio provides optimum performance with approximately 300 Mbps maximum PHY data rate. Customers who deploy dual-band, 802.11n radios and power the 1250 Series using standard 802.3af will have more reliable and predictable coverage than that provided by traditional 802.11a/g networks; however, operation will be limited to a single transmitter per radio with maximum PHY data rates of 150 Mbps instead of 300 Mbps per radio. Customers with a significant investment in 802.11 a/b/g client devices that have low-to-medium bandwidth needs but high-reliability requirements will benefit the most from this type of deployment scenario.
Powering the Aironet 1250 Series Access Point with Cisco Enhanced PoE
Cisco Enhanced PoE was designed for customers who want to install new PoE-enabled technologies that require greater than 15.4W per port to function at full capability, such as wireless technology based on the IEEE 802.11n standard. Cisco Enhanced PoE provides the full power requirements for dual-radio modules and eliminates the need to run an additional cabling drop or insert a separate power injector. Support for Enhanced PoE is currently available on a variety of Cisco Catalyst® switching platforms. For more information on Enhanced PoE, visit
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/switches/epoe.html.
    What are you using for the 1252's?? If you are using an "E" Series 3750 this is a very good thread;

  • WCS displays Access Point as disassociated but WLC shows as associated

    Hi all,
I have a WCS ver 7.0.172, a 5508 WLAN Controller with ver 7.0.116.0. At this WLC 21 Access Points (AIR-LAP1131AG-E-K9 ) were associated. As well I have one CleanAir Access Point (AIR-CAP3502E-E-K9) is associated.
    And now ... my problem:
every time the WCS got a critical error and reports that the AP is disassociated from Controller. But if I take a look to the WLC the AP is associated and works at local mode and have two clients associated.
I cleared the alarm - a few minutes later the alarm will be reported again. Same result if I delete the alarm.
Could anybody give support for that issue.
    Thanks and regards
    Holger

    Hi Holgerseiler,
Have you got any information/solution on this issue?
I also have same kind of issue. I have a WCS with version 7.0.172.0, and around 25 WLCs (version7.0.116.0, in which i checked) and totally around 1000 APs are assiociated in wireless network.
Some error messages are coming on my WCS device like
    "AP disassociated from Controller [ip]"
Here AP name and WLC ip address will change randomly, but there is no impact on my network.
    Thanks in advance
    Sangeeth BS

  • Access Points keep associating and disassociating from WLC

I have numerous access points, both 3502 and 3602's that are connected to Cisco 2960s POE switches that will disassociate and then reassociate themselves with the WLC.  The WLC and access points are running 7.4.110.0.  The particaular Cisco 2960s POE switch in this case is running 12.2(55)SE3, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1).   This is becoming a widespread issue.

When the AP recovers, what is the physical up time and WLC association time.
Now if your AP(s) regularly reboots then I'd consider you test the cable runs using the on-board TDR feature of your switch.
