PL/SQL Procedure and Java

Hi All,
I am working on a Data Warehousing Product and generating Web Reports.
These Web Reports are JSPs.
The basic architechture used for this is :
1. Get the inputs required for Report Generation through a Web GUI
2. Validate and Process (If Valid) the inputs so that it can be applied on the Data in the DB to fetch appropriate information.
3. The Data from the DB is retreived in the form of PL/SQL Procedures, which take the Processed information from Step 2 as Input and give the Output in the form of REF CURSORS.
Note: There are a many PL/SQL Procedures that are being executed, based on the configuration the Client has set. This configuration enables the Client to set the columns he wants to see in the Web Reports. This configuration is set before the Reports are run.
4. A call is made from Java to Oracle, each time a PL/SQL Procedure need to be executed. The REF CURSOR received as an Output from the PL/SQL Procedure is processed.
5. The next PL/SQL Procedure is called (if existing), else the Processed Data (from REF CURSOR Output) is displayed in the JSP as Web Reports.
The issue with above architechture is the PERFORMANCE.
I would like to know:
- The various ways in which data can be EFFICIENTLY & QUICKLY retrieved from PL/SQL Procedure in Java.
- Are there any APIs that improve the Java-Oracle Data Fetch Efficiency
- Is there any Java Framework available that can be used to increase the spped of Web Report generation.
- Do you suggest any changes in the above mentioned architechture, that make this work a Sweet Sixeen Year olg guy! ;)
- In general, any input that can increase the Speed of Web Report Generation.
Kindly let me know if I have not been clear at any point, so that I can re-explain the same more clearly.
And the most important thing, kindly scrap down your thoughts about the same.

You appear to be discussing transaction scope which is completely independent of PL/SQL blocks like procedures or how you call procedures. It's all in where commits (or rollbacks) are issued.
If you have a procedure like this

The caller of the procedure may choose to commit or rollback the change-- that will determine whether the first statement's results are made permanent. If you have a procedure like this,

END;the commit will make the first insert permanent regardless of whether the second statement fails no matter what the calling code does (that's one reason that putting commits in stored procedures is generally a bad idea-- the caller is in a much better position to know what other uncommitted work has been done and whether it is safe to commit.

Import and process larger data with SQL*Loader and Java resource

Hello,
I have a project to import data from a text file in a schedule. A lager data, with nearly 20,000 record/1 hours.
After that, we have to analysis the data, and export the results into a another database.
I research about SQL*Loader and Java resource to do these task. But I have no experiment about that.
I'm afraid of the huge data, Oracle could be slowdown or the session in Java Resource application could be timeout.
Please tell me some advice about the solution.

TTClasses interface for PL/SQL procedure and fetching its results

I am using TimesTen Release 11.2.1.3.0;
I created a simple PL/SQL procedure as follows in timesten-

The issue here is nothing to do with TTClasses. Your PL/SQL procedure executes a SELECT statement (that returns just one row) using an implicit cursor within the PL/SQL procedure and retrieves the value of the ename column into the PL/SQL variable. However it does not them do anything with that value such as pass it back to the caller...
Similarly, the TTClasses code executes a statement that it is expecting to create an ODBC level cursor 9which thsi PL/SQL invocation will not of course) and it is then trying to fetch from a cursor that does not exist.
I would recommend that you take a look at the TimesTen PL/SQL documentation (Oracle® TimesTen In-Memory Database PL/SQL Developer's Guide Release 11.2.1) and refer to the section on IN, OUT and IN/OUT parameters. This will show you how you can use OUT parameters to return values to the caller. This technique works fine for ODBC, JDBC and OCi programs but does not sadly currently work with TTClasses. TTClasses has not yet been enhanced to support OUT and INOUT parameters. Of course as you have the source code for TTClasses you could make the necessary modifications yourself.
I will open a bug requesting that TTClasses support OUT and INOUT parameters but in the meantime if you need this kind of capability you will need to either modify TTClasses yourself or switch to using a different API.

You may define a global empty array in some package. Then you can do:

What are the proven ways to test pl/sql procedures and functions? Specifically, procedures and functions that take cursor variables as IN OUT parameter, OR procedure and functions that takes an array as IN parameter?

DBMS_OUTPUT.PUT_LINE multi records from PL/SQL procedure to Java web page.

I will explain the scenario:
In our java web page, we are using three text boxes to enter "Part number,Description and Aircraft type". Every time the user no need to enter all these data. The person can enter any combination of data or only one text box. Actually the output data corresponding to this input entries is from five Oracle table. If we are using a single query to take data from all the five tables, the database will hang. So I written a procedure "SEARCH1",this will accept any combination of values (for empty values we need to pass NULL to this procedure) and output data from all the five tables. When I executing this procedure in SQL editor, the execution is very fast and giving exact result. I used "dbms_output.put_line" clause for outputing multiple records in my procedure. The output variables are "Serial No, part Number, Description, Aircraft type,Part No1,Part No2,Part No3,Part No4". I want to use the same procedure "SEARCH1" for outputing data in java web page.The passing argument I can take from the text box provided in java web page. I am using jdbc thin driver to connect our java web page to Oracle 9i database.
Note1 : If any combination of search item not available, in procedure itself I am outputing a message like "Part Number not found". Here I am using four words ("Part" is the first word,"Number" is the second,"Not" s the third, and "found" is the fourth) for outputing this message.Is it necessary to equalise number of words I am using here to the record outputing eight variable?
Our current development work is stopped because of this issue. So any one familier in this field,plese help me to solve our issue by giving the sample code for the same scenario.

PL/SQL Procedure Calling Java Host Command Problem

This is my first post to this forum so I hope I have chosen the correct one for my problem. I have copied a java procedure to call Unix OS commands from within a PL/SQL procedure. This java works well for some OS commands (Eg ls -la) however it fails when I call others (eg env). Can anyone please give me some help or pointers?
The java is owned by sys and it looks like this

Thanks for that. I have tried to use getErrorStream and it does give me more info. It appears that some of the commands cannot be found. I suspected that this was the case but I am not sure about how this can be as they all appear to reside in the same directory with the same permissions.
What is more confusing is output like so:

Calling PL/SQL Procedures from Java

Hello,
I want to know, if it is possible to call PL/SQL Procedures from
SQLJ(which uses htp.print from the Package web toolkit ).
Though, it is possible to call normal procedures but if I want
to call PL/SQL procedures with htp.print then I get I error.
For example:

Oracle's htp packages are develop to be work with
mod_plsql/OAS/OWS webserver.
If you are trying to use htp packages first need to instanciate
some enviroment vars for htp packages, for example first you has
to call to owa.initialize procedure, populate owa.cgi array and
so on.
If you need more information about how this toolkit works you
could get the source of DB Prism at
http://www.plenix.com/dbprism/ this open source framework
includes backward compatibility with mod_plsql application and
then includes settings of this values from Java code.

PL-SQL Procedures and Functions

while reading about PL-SQL Procedures I came across a concept, which states that we can not include bind or host variables in procedures because the compiler cannot resolve the reference to bind variable.
Can someone please explain it more elaborately.

Creating page items from pl/sql procedure and using them on a page

I have a page containing 2 select lists (P21_DEPARTMENTS and P21_DATE). Originally I added them as items that were "select list with submits". The problem is that based on the clearance level of the currently logged on user I only wanted the P21_DEPARTMENTS to be a select list if the user was an administrator. If however the user is not an admin then I want the page to have a hidden form field called P21_DEPARTMENTS that stores the user's department and has a label item that has the department name.
There is also a report region that generates a table based on the department selected from the select list (if the user is an admin) or the value stored in the hidden form field if the user is not.
My problem is that I cannot have both those items on the same page and use the HTML built-in authentication to determine which item should be rendered because I need to use the same ID for both items so that the stored procedure in my report region doesn't break. HTML does not permit items to share the same ID.
I tried to circumvent the problem by creating a stored procedure that performs all of the item rendering in the procedure and uses "htp.p()" to output all of my HTML code. This solution would allow me to pass a parameter into the procedure informing me as to whether or not the user is an administrator. If the user is an administrator the procedure would use a conditional statement and render a select list. If not, the hidden form field and label option would be used instead.
I finally got the stored procedure working perfectly. Now I am encountering the most bizarre thing. Since the "select list with submit" was not working (I used the same code that gets generated when I created other items using htmlDB's GUI) I decided to use a JavaScript function instead that gets triggered by the onChange event. I send along the value that is currently selected in the select list and in the function I set:

In theory this should work. The problem is that it doesn't. The page reloads and the P21_DEPARTMENTS select list is not pre-selected.
The only thing I can think of is that when htmlDB generates page items that you've created with it's own admin tool it assigns some internal guid or something as opposed to when someone tries to generate dynamic page items of their own from a pl/sql procedure it's like the application doesn't even know they exist.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
My only other solution would be to create a totally separate page (one for admin and another for non-admin). I would really like to avoid this.

I would love to be able to generate my menus and
various other items in my htmlDB applications in much
the same way I can using ASP, PHP and Cold Fusion.
Users should have the ability to write server-side
code wherever they feel like it. The way htmlDB works
right now I spend more time trying to figure out how
to create simple effects and generate simple
interfaces when I need to be building a portal. Ami - it's important to understand that HTML DB is not like other languages. Thus, trying to force concepts which are common in other languages into HTML DB will often result in more work.

I can build a portal using Classic ASP, C#, PHP or Cold
Fusion in like 1/10 of the time that it takes me to
build one using htmlDB. I understand that this is not
meant for the hard-core programmer but no web
programming application in today's day and age should
prevent experts from getting under the hood.And I can build a Portal in HTML DB in 1/10 the time it will take me to do it in any other language. It's like anything else - proficiency comes with practice and work.
As for getting under the hood, there is plenty of places you can do that with HTML DB. Keep in mind that HTML DB itself is an HTML DB application, so the limits on what you can build with HTML DB are virtually limitless.

Jdbc NullPointerException calling pl/sql procedure from java

Hi.
Getting the following exception calling a plsql procedure from jdbc.
- Jdbc version is 10.2.0.2, but it also happens running several other variants, including 10.1.0.5.0.
- Application is running in Weblogic 8.1.3 (8.1 SP 3).
The procedure call itself has 2 in/out parameters which are tables (actually just 1 dimensional arrays), which I'm suspecting has something to do with the problem. I can successfully call this procedure using a plsql developer tool with the same bind parameters.
Any ideas?

OK... I figured it out.
Apparently, this error happens when you forget to register the output part of an in/out parameter. I would have hoped for better error messaging, but oh well.

I like to change the order of loading the class at runtime...
Is there is any way to change the order of loading of class...
I may have different version of jar files for example xerces,xercesImpl. some of the code uses xerces ,some of the code uses xercesImpl..i had common classes.
I like to load the class with the same name according to the order i need..
Can we do all these in Run time ?????

The classes you are referring to are part of the Java API. Third party jars have no impact on that. And you can't change to the order because java.sql.Data is derived from java.util.Date. So the second must load before the first.
And if you have two jar files with those classes in them (and not classes that use them) then you either should already know how to use them or you should stop trying to do whatever you are doing because it isn't going to work.

Triggers, Stored Procedures and Java

Hi all.
I started developing some useful (at least for me) Java Package, and I'm wondering if I'm doing the right thing.
Let's say that I have a trigger that calls a Stored Procedure that calls a Java Package.
Let's say that the Java Package can be used by more than one Oracle Schema.
So, my question is:
Should I load the package in every Schema ? Or should I load the package in the System (for instance) schema, creating synonyms for it (if possible) ? Or should I create both the package and the Stored Procedure in System, creating synonyms for the procedure ?
I'm a little stuck in this....
Another question : when my trigger fires, it launch the Stored Procedure and, consequently, my Java Package.... At this point, am I in the same transaction of the trigger ? Or the Java Package start a new "subtransaction" ?

Do not create anything in the System schema. Create the package and procedure in one schema and create a public synonym that the other schemas can use to access it.
And yes the trigger and anything it executes are all part of the same transaction. As long as none of the procedures are declared as an autonomous transaction, in which case that procedure would be a separate transaction.
