Play quicktime streams in chrome?

I am running 64 bit archlinux and use the chrome browser from AUR (and up to date).  I have noticed that pages containing quicktime video in web pages that I have tried to view show a jigsaw piece icon and the video does not play.  I guess this is due to the changes to disallow npapi plugins last year. Does anyone know how to work around this so that quicktime movies can be played in chrome?

I can only suggest picking a different browser - maybe chromium would work - or ditching websites that use quicktime.
I think the 32-bit chrome on Windows can use QT plugin.

  • Quicktime Streaming Server Live broadcast Issue

    Hi All,
    If someone could please help me with this, I have a Quicktime Streaming server set up in our DMZ with Nicecast being used to broadcast up to the server. When I enter the URL of the station in Internet Explorer Windows Media Player launches without any issue and plays the live broadcast. When I try to launch the URL in Firefox or Google Chrome for some reason the Quicktime plugin attempts to play the broadcast, plays about 10 seconds and stops. Any thoughts to why that is?
    Thank You,
    Brad

    The embedded link plays on Windows in IE 7, Firefox 3.5 (Mac and Win), and Safari 4.0.2 Mac, all with QT 7.6.2. Below are some screenshots of the chat window where the stream plays from:
    *This is Firefox 3.5 Mac:*
    *This is Safari 4.0.2 Mac:*
    *This is Firefox 3.5 Win:*
    *This is IE 7:*
    The issue with Safari and Firefox in the top two images is the code on the page needs to be fixed. This is what's there:
    <OBJECT CLASSID="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" CODEBASE="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" WIDTH="90" HEIGHT="50" >
    <PARAM NAME="src" VALUE=" icy://riotradio.dc-uoit.ca/riotradio" >
    <PARAM NAME="autoplay" VALUE="true" >
    <EMBED PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/" SRC="http://www.theriotradio.com/chatbox/riotradio.mov" TYPE="image/x-quicktime" WIDTH="90" HEIGHT="50" QTSRC="icy://riotradio.dc-uoit.ca/riotradio" AUTOPLAY="true" >
    </EMBED>
    </OBJECT>
    and that's why you see the little QT window next to the 'Riot Radio' graphic and why you see the player window with the -2048 error code below it in the Safari screenshot. If the code is changed to this:
    <OBJECT CLASSID="clsid:02BF25D5-8C17-4B23-BC80-D3488ABDDC6B" CODEBASE="http://www.apple.com/qtactivex/qtplugin.cab" WIDTH="90" HEIGHT="50">
    <EMBED PLUGINSPAGE="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/download/" SRC="http://www.theriotradio.com/chatbox/riotradio.mov" TYPE="image/x-quicktime" WIDTH="90" HEIGHT="50" AUTOPLAY="true">
    </EMBED>
    </OBJECT>
    the little QT box should disappear and the player will display in the area below the 'Riot Radio' graphic. However, the '<OBJECT>' and '<EMBED>' tags are deprecated in favor of using Apple's javascript implementation of calling QT in web pages. This is also the reason that the QT plugin doesn't load in IE 7 (last image) -the 'Q' with the '?' mark on it.
    Here's a sample of what could be used:
    <head>
    <script src="AC_QuickTime.js" language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript"></script>
    </head>
    <body>
    <script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript">
    QT_WriteOBJECT('http://www.theriotradio.com/chatbox/riotradio.mov','310','305',' ',
    'autoplay','true',
    'controller','true',
    'align','middle');
    </script>
    </body>
    You can pass this link:
    http://developer.apple.com/internet/ieembedprep.html
    along to your coder to have him look at what is recommended for QT embedding using javascript to make it work with IE 7/8 -it will also work with FF and Safari. The 'AC_QuickTime.js' javascript, shown in the code sample, can be downloaded from the page linked above and placed on the site.

  • Safari 6.0.1 will not play QuickTime Files

    I am having problems with Safari 6.0.1 playing back QuickTime Files. I reset safari and cookies and it will still not play QuickTime movies. To the best of my knowledge, QuickTime is working with all other components of the computer.
    Is there a way to redownload Safari or repair it...
    I could not find a place on Apple's webpage to redownload it.
    I am using Mac OS 10.7.5 on a MacPro (2008).
    Does anyone know how to resolve this problem?
    -M

    From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extension tab.
    If there are any installed, turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari.
    There are several extensions such as DivX that can prevent QT content from streaming.

  • Problem with QuickTime streaming

    Hi there
    I got an IPad 2 3G , but I have a huge problem. I have a website, which contains some quicktime stream video. but IPad cannot play them at all. Movies have a black screen, in the middle there is QuickTime logo.
    Can you help me, how to fix this problem?
    Thank you!

    Did you repair permissions & restart your computer after installation? If so, then go into your browser's Preferences & map either VLC or Perian as the browser's web plug-in.
    I would also go into QT Preferences & check its streaming preferences.
    System Preferences>Quicktime>Advanced
    Click on the MIME Settings button.
    In the next window that opens up make sure that Streaming-Streaming movies is enabled (checked).
    While you’re at it make sure all the boxes are enabled by clicking on the corresponding triangles so that they are pointed down.
    This will show the “hidden” boxes especially the Video box. This box will enable you to play .avi files.
    Click the OK button.
    Now click Streaming
    Your settings you should be (as starters):
    Streaming Speed: Automatic
    Make sure Enable Instant-On is enabled (checked).
    Now click on Browser
    Make sure:
    Play movies automatically
    Save movies in disk cache
    Are both enabled.
    Movie download Cache Size: Slider set all the way to the left.
    ==============
    To make VLC your default .avi player:
    Highlight an .avi file>File>Get Info>
    In the Get Info window, scroll down to "Open with:"
    Select VLC.
    Click the "Change All..." button if you want to "Use this application to open all documents like this.”

  • Does QuickTime Streaming Server have a nice user gui?

    I am thinking of getting Mac OS X Server for the QuickTime Streaming Server that comes with this. I have only been able to find admin gui pictures. Does QTSS come with any nice user interfaces? Is there any example of any of the default user interfaces / webpages?
    Thank you.

    AFIAK "Windows Media Server" and "Real Media Server" are not providing a content management "Web GUI Media Server" either. What you get with QTSS/DSS that you're not getting with Windows Media Server and Real Media Server is what I have quantified to be a greater amount of player ubiquity (the highest in reality is Flash, but you're stuck with Flash Media Server and On2 VP6 codec (which I think looks horrible)).
    Just one thing to ask you, think of your customers (most the one's I am concerned with are students) and think of what they use to play music. Do they use a Zune? A Creative Nomad? Or do the use an iPod? Most people have ipods, I would think, and therefore use iTunes, and therefore have quicktime installed. Hmmmm... wait I can play almost any open source media format with quicktime, oh and wait I can stream just about any open source (streamable) media format with QTSS/DSS.
    Oh did I mention I can run DSS on a variety of rock solid *nix distro's on off the shelf parts from my local electronics store. Can you say cheap streaming media server?
    In the end it's all apple's and orange's to me. Yah windows is more pervasive, but you're going to be pigeon holed into using windows media formats (which are all proprietary), and dealing with an unstable server OS (no debating this one). With QTSS/DSS I can stream mpeg-4's or 3gp or if I so desired .mov. I don't particularly like the SpyWare install nature of real player and it's thousands upon thousands of updates, and version name changes, and this or that. I personally don't even have it installed, nor do I visit any website that uses it. I also think real's and windows media's video quality is so so (just my opinion).
    h.264 is really where it's at, it's part of everything nowadays including production pipelines for movies, and in HD-DVD and BluRay DVD specs. Yah I am sure you can stream h.264 encoded .RM or .WMV (not sure if that's possible) but again your limited. I personally stream MPEG-4's (completely platform indpendent, and can be played back in almost all media players (including windows media player with the envivio plugin), and VLC which is free and can be installed on (windows, os x, linux).
    The Killer combo for me is really, flash player (flash can now play mpeg-4's including h.264, but only for downloads) playing RTSP MPEG-4 h.264 encoded streams form DSS/QTSS (or some other blazingly fast and stable streaming server, there are other's out there, but DSS/QTSS seems pretty dang pervasive to me).

  • UDP Stream -- SDP File w/ QuickTime Streaming Server?

    Hi everyone,
    I'm trying to help a client who's getting into some more advanced QuickTime stuff than I'm famillair with, and I could sure use some help figuring out a solution for him. Instead of trying to rephrase his question myself, I'll just copy his email to me below:
    Question about QTSS. I have played around with Darwin Streaming Server quite a bit but there is one thing I want it to do that it can't. My question is this. Will Quicktime Streaming Server take an unannounced UDP stream that is directed to it and automatically create a SDP file so I can then relay the stream to people. With DSS I have to make a SDP file myself which I don't know how to do yet.
    What I'm doing is using an Axis Network camera, sending video out UDP unannounced. I'm doing this so if a network connection goes down the camera will still be sending out video and when the connection comes back up the video will make it through to the server again.
    So once it's on QTSS I want to pull 3 different streams of this feed (via the SDP file), one with no modification, the other 2 VLC will request the stream and transcode them and drop the transcoded stream into another QTSS. This second QTSS would be the server for the 2 transcoded streams.
    Thanks,
    Any ideas? If QTSS can't do exactly what he has in mind, is there another feature that would be similar? Again, any help you might provide would be very appreciated,

    I thought I'd bump this message just on the off chance anyone who might have an answer missed it the first time around. Heck, if you've even got a good suggestion as to a better forum to ask it on, I'd really appreciate it!
    Thanks, and best wishes,

  • Mac Pro won't play radio streams like G5 could

    Is it really true that the new Intel-based machines will not ever play live streaming radio broadcasts?
    I cannot seem to get this thing to work at all - Flip4Mac, WMP 9.0, nothing seems to work, although my G5 (which is being sold) does. (Some have said that one must run Safari in "Rosetta" mode with the new Intels; if so, how is this done?)
    Will this ever be corrected?
    Thanks all in advance for your help!
    David

    Seems strange you can't get audio to work natively.
    Your 3 most popular choices: RealPlayer, Windows Media formats via Flip4Mac, and QuickTime.
    RealPlayer - do you have the lastest version (10.1) installed? If you do, have a look at your RealPlayer preferences>Media Types (top 4 boxes selected), Internet (Internet settings - 1st and 3rd box; Web Browser - both boxes checked) and Transport (Network Transport box checked).
    QuickTime: System Preferences>Quicktime>Advanced>Mime settings>Audio - make sure all are checked (the only one unchecked for me is "sound designer II". Also, the Miscellaneous box is unchecked.
    Flip4Mac - System Preferences>Flip4Mac: Plug-in - 1st and 3rd boxes checked; Movies>1st box checked (obviously not audio related, however, good to make sure it's selected).
    Let me know if that helps get you back into the Intel Native mode for audio streaming.

  • No audio in QuickTime streaming

    I am completely baffled by this; I no longer get any sound when playing any streamed files through QuickTime (e.g. the Macworld keynote stream for instance).
    I am currently running 10.4.4 and QT 7.0.4 - reverting to QT 7.0.1 made no difference, as did disabling DivX6, Flip4Mac and OggVorbis components.
    I think I may have experienced this in 10.4.3, so perhaps it is OS related?
    Any ideas anyone?

    The fix is quite simple. You simply open /Applications -> Utilities -> Audio MIDI Setup and change the output settings to 44100.0 Hz (the iMac supports up to 96600 Hz).

  • Is there an updated way of setting QuickTime streaming speed for iChat?

    I've been using iChat screen share to help a friend.  The first time we tried it, it worked well; the second time, however (same computers), the image of the screen I recieved was suddenly very low resolution (too low for me to see what I'm doing).  It sometimes clears up after around 30-40 seconds, but once a window is moved, etc, the problem reoccurs, making the process tedious to the point that I don't think I'd go through this.  I saw in a previous community tip that changing the streaming speed in Quicktime can resolve this issue; they specified that this must be done through the Quicktime icon in System Preferences, and not through the standard Quicktime app..  that was for OS 10.5.6; on my OS (10.6.8, and the new QT), Quicktime is now missing from the System Preferences panal  : /..  I also saw a user comment on another site saying, "Basically, [the new] QTX lacks the option to pick your codec, frame size, data rate, and so on."  So was QuickTime's streaming speed function lost, and do I really need Quicktime to accomplish better image quality for iChat?  If it can't be fixed, is there a better screen sharing utility I can get that won't have these problems?  Thanks for any help : )..

    Hi,
    Back before iChat 4 the Video part of iChat chats was based on the reading the app ttok from the Internet speed it could see.
    This speed was directly effected by the then System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming tab setting.
    Basically the Automatic Setting was read a 0 (zero) kbps.
    The Fastest Setting of Intranet/LAN also got messed up  (it would not return a figure iChat could use)
    For that reason we used to Suggest that people use the 1.5Mbps T1/Intranet/LAN setting
    This limited Video streaming by any app to 1500kbps both as Upload and Download  (this is fact a rough figure based on using base 10 rather than the true binary based math involved)
    At iChat 4 Apple made iChat see the Automatic setting as 384kbps
    This should be fast enough for 4 way Video chats as the Host end. (the person that invites the others)
    By Snow Leopard (iChat 5) the Quicktime Setting has gone in System Preferences.
    The way iChat "reads" the Internet Speed is different and it is not restricted by Quicktime.
    The only way to Cap iChat now is the App Menu > Preferences > Video Section > Bandwidth Limit
    Apple state the minimum Internet speed that iChat should have for Screen Sharing is 128kbps
    Internet Speeds tends to be based on Binary multiple at lower speeds - 56kbps  is max Dial-up Modem speed
    128kbps is obviously twice that. The next speed split is like to be 265kbps
    Check that you and your Buddy have at least 128kbps as Upload as well as download.
    http://www.speedtest.net/
    Ideally it should be faster as at that speed you can lose between 10 and 20% in the test  and the overheads of running the connection to the ISP
    Setting the Bandwidth (in iChat) at 500kbps at both ends can eradicate the variances you can get in slower Internet speeds.
    In Snow Leopard Quicktime has become Quicktime X and does have issues playing some Quicktime 7 movies.
    This also applies to Lion and Mountian Lion
    However there are ways to install the Quicktime 7 Player that will cover the codecs that may not be played.
    This info does not apply to iChat though.

  • I can no longer play quicktime mov files from a canon firestore

    I can no longer play quicktime mov files from a canon firestore from an HDV camera that play on other macs and play in vlc. It happened all of a sudden. Files that I could play before no longer play. It seems to be something wrong with the quicktime codec management because the files do not play in premiere and final cut pro. In FCP it says: File Error: 1 File(s) recognized, 0 access denied, 1 unknown. These files work on other computers. I have four drives and it doesnt matter which file i attempt to open on each drive, these files are unreadable on this system. Please help. Possible issues might be a corrupted index, but i dont understand how that can go across four different drives.

    Apple kindly updated Quicktime and rendered Firestore files unplayable. I think a recent update of iTunes was the culprit.
    Solutions: What I did. Wipe the system disc. Re-install Snow Leopard. Re-install FCP7. Don't update Quicktime or iTunes to anything after Jun 2011. QT v7.6.6 is the last good version. That'll get your files back.
    A colleague tried a different approach. For this you need a pre-July 2011 version of the file QuickTimeComponents.component.  It is in the system/library/QuickTime folder. Delete your current one and drop in an old one.
    However if you're working with Final Cut X, I think you screwed until Focus and Apple work something out. My address is on my contacts page at teevideousadotcom if you need any further help.

  • Where did the Quicktime streaming server go??

    It looks as if the Quicktime streaming server is gone for good - apparently it is not part of the Lion server install, and it can't be found on the Apple web site either. There is a page for it, but it doesn't actually provide any useful information.
    Does anyone has any idea what happened to this technology?

    Hello! I said... I want the ability to input analogue video into my camcorder so I can continue to transfer VHS and input and record video from other sources. The new HD cameras on the market will not allow you to record video from any source except for the lens.
    I have HD cable box. I want to record my HD programs from cable (HBO, Starz, etc) to my camera, download the video to my Mac from the camera and then edit them in iMovie and create professional looking movie DVD's in iMovie.
    iMovie HD can work with mini DV HD cameras and HD video. I was not aware of a system requirement for working with HD content.

    The Apple-supported QuickTime Streaming Server only comes with Mac OS X Server. What you need it QTSS's open-source twin Darwin Streaming Server. Download that, open the disk image, and just double-click on the package file to install.

    okay ... let's try a careful standalone QT 7.1 reinstall.
    download and save a copy of the QT 7.1 standalone installer to your hard drive. (we'll run the install from there rather than online.) switch off antivirus and antispyware applications prior to the install.
    Quicktime 7.1 Standalone Installer
    if that install goes through okay, does your itunes launch properly again?
    (if you get an error message on the QT standalone reinstall, let us know what it says. include error message numbers if you're getting any.)

  • Since upgrading to Lion, I cannot play QuickTime videos in Safari 5.1.1, not even on Apple's own website?

    Upgraded to Lion and now I cannot watch QuickTime videos in Safari 5.1.  Did not have this problem in Snow Leopard.  QuickTime videos do play in Firefox.  I cannot even play QuickTime videos on Apple's own website.  Any suggestions?  I'm using a Macbook Core 2 Duo.

    Hi Sami,
    I have partially solved my problem.  I had software installed for a Twelve South BassJump (it improves the sound of your laptop speakers).  When I removed that software, I was able to play videos on Apple's website in Safari.  The company has beta software available from their website that is supposed to be Lion compatible but when I installed that the problem returned.  But even with that software removed I still cannot watch videos on some sites such as Other World Computing.
    I just got a new Macbook Pro yesterday with Lion installed from Apple and all video plays fine.  So I believe there must be some compatibilty issues with some plug-in.  I have Perian and Flip4Mac installed.  I removed 3ivx and the problem still remains.  I've read conflicting opinions as to Perian being Lion compatible.
    Everything works fine in Firefox at this point so at least I have that to fall back on.
    Check your system preference pane under "other" and tell me if you have any of the plug-ins I mentioned installed.  Maybe we will be able to see a common culprit.
    Let's keep each other posted.
    Thanks,
    Chris in Ohio (USA)
