Playback in OSX 10.4 perfectly!! Upgrade to 10.5 & playback gone?!?

No joke.
So I'm running a trial version 2 months ago on my machine at work to prep for my CS5 launch presentation. Everything worked splendidly!!! Mercury playback was sent to us from heaven dripping with angel sweat, a miracle sent from on high! Truly a remarkable game changing development. Light years beyond my expectations!!!
FYI I was running it on a 2 x 2.66 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 16GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM & ATI Radeon HD 4870 running 10.5.whatever.
I was amazed at how well the playback worked with 4k files, raw camera data, HD, SD and effects all piled on top of one another... It was shocking!!!
2 weeks ago I install another trial version on another machine since the trial on mine was up. This time on a 2 x 2.93 Ghz Quad-Core Intel Xeon 6GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM & ATI Radeon HD 4870 running 10.5.whatever... once again everything worked better than I had ever imagined!! This is looking to be a huge game changer for our post dept.
Last week all the machines get upgraded to snow leopard OSX 10.6.4 and the last machine had 10GB more RAM added to it and now playback has come to a screeching halt!!! I WAS DUMBFOUNDED, SPEECHLESS, AND LIVID!!! How is this even possible?
Someone please explain what happened and what we need to do to get the playback back.
BTW I already know the answer "Get a supported Nvidia card." That's bogus... it worked perfectly before why not now?

Come to find out my user profile did not have write permission to the scratch disk at it's root level. Our IT admin logged in as an admin and gave the users permission to write to it, prior to firing up premiere. Everything worked as expected when logged in as an admin. We then switched back to my user profile and violå it worked unexpectedly!!!
That was the problem, my user profile did not have root write permission to the scratch drive premiere was writing preview files to.
I was wrong... our IT informs me that he thinks an admin user needs update Premiere with the most recent update then open a project to start Premiere 1st in order to correctly set up the hardware configuration.

My MBP has stopped recognising my wireless connections post THE OSX 10.7.4 upgrade. It detects the modem and asks for password, but Does not accept, nor connect.
But strangely enough, if I sit next to the modem, the Mbp connects easily.
My other Apple products connect to the same modem without issue.
Have tried all basic checks both with the modem and also the mbp...but no Solutions so far.

Should I downgrade from OSX 10.8.5 to OSX 10.4, then upgrade to 10.5 or 10.6 from there?

Ever since I upgraded to 10.8 earlier this year, my MBP seems to struggle with every application and process. Nothing operates smoothly, and Chrome, which I absolutely loved using prior, is significantly outperformed by safari. I can no longer view the 1080p video from my GoPro Hero 1 (which played flawlessly smooth on Snow leopard), start up and shut down times are embarrassing, and simply scrolling any page in any application lags. I've also performed a clean install, but to no avail.
I think that restoring my computer back to OSX 10.4, then upgrading to 10.5 or 10.6 might be the best solution for me.

I backed my computer up with 10.4, upgraded to 10.5, using the same external drive to back everything up via Time Machine in 10.5, and from 10.5 I upgraded to 10.8 which I've also used the same external drive to create a Time machine back up for.

iPhoto 9.2.3 is incompatible with MacOS 10.9.3 Mavericks. If you are running Mavericks on your system you need to update iPhoto to 9.5.1. Only, the problem is, that this version is no longer available at the App Store.
The easiest way to get a compatible iPhoto version in that case would be to upgrade to Yosemite, MacOS X 10.10, and then download the most recent iPhoto version from the AppStore, iiPhoto 9.6, like LarryHN suggested.
If you cannot download iPhoto after upgrading to iPhoto 9.6 post back.

Apple LaserWriter Select 360 and OSX 5.1.2 upgrade

My LaserWriter 360 has performed perfectly from Tiger to Leopard 5.1. After upgrading to 5.1.2 it would NOT print. The LaserWriter is connected to the computer with a Ethernet cable into an Asante box,and then into the printer. This has never failed for over 6 years and since OS X came out. The Apple LaserWriter 360 driver DOES exist in print driver lists in the Library. I Archived and Installed back to the OSX 5.1 version hoping that might fix my problem but it did not.
I have gone into "Network" and "Printer Fax" — tried everything with no success. I hate to part with this printer as it performs great when it was working before the 5.1.2 upgrade. Any suggestions?

Help! Apple advised me that there are very smart people here, smarter than they, who might be able to help me. I'm having the same problem getting my MacBook OS 10.5 to work (at all) with my Laserwriter Select 360. It is not supported (7 years) by Apple. It worked wirelessly when I first set up borrowing the driver from my Ibook. My household uses 3 ibooks with great success including the one I hoped to replace with my MacBook. After 5 months, and trying various solutions posted here, by some fluke it printed once yesterday.
Can anyone tell me where I can get a driver that will work wirelessly with my airport? Apple said I have a Guttenberg (?) default in the OS software, which is not visible in the printer library, but can only be plugged directly into the MacBook via an adapter. This would mean the rest of the Mac users in my home (Ibooks) would not have access to that port and I want to be wireless. I've read many happy reports here and hope someone very wise can help me. Apple says this printer never worked wirelessly. Somehow I completed all of my graduate education using it wirelessly so I have hope that someone here can help. Hi, I've just downloaded the latest operating system upgrade OSX 10.6.8 and now Safari and App Store crashes upon openning. Is anyone else having this problem?

It's not wrong, but just occasionally things don't get updated perfectly. Sometimes on this forum, after an OSX point update, people report various issues. Re-applying the update using the combo very often fixes things. The combo contains all the updates since the original release.

You can actually use iCloud for IMAP email without upgrading, but for full iCloud use...
First you need to research all the problems people are having with the higher OSX versions, & make sure you have a bootable clone of what you have just in case.
then you must get 10.6 if they still have it, install it & update to 10.6.8 so you have the App Store to buy & download the huge 10.8 Installer.

OSX 10.6.8 UPGRADE WINDOW PROBLEM!

Dear friends,
I have a OSX 10.6.8 and from yesterday I CAN'T use Safari, Chrome, Firefox, no more! An Upgrade windows (that one you see here) appear and - if I accept the upgrading - he downloads me just a useless setup.exe file, even if I select the "Remind me later" option. Never had a problem like that... It's a big problem for me... What can I do?

How to have a perfect upgrade.

I wish there were a way to have this message sent to all Apple users.
I know that all my clients and friends who have taken my advise over the years, have thanked me repeatedly. The following advise is how to have a flawless and perfect update with ZERO problems for the duration of your Mac's life on 'said' OS.
So here it is... the clean install.
*first, grab a bottle of your favorite wine*
1. Backup all your important data. Photo's, video, music, files in general.
2. Backup your address book, safari preferences, and email folder (you can import or replace these files on the new OS)
3. Slide in the OS DVD, select 'restart' from the menu, and hold down the 'c' key.
4. Before installing the OS, select 'disc utility' from the menu. Then click on the hard drive, and click on 'security options', and select 'zero all data'. (you don't need the 7x pass, once is fine). Then click on 'erase'. This completely wipes your hard drive of everything.
5. Proceed on installing the new OS.
6. Re-install all your favorite apps, and import your old email, address book and safari folders. (replace folders if you cant import)
Apple's marketing of having a 'new mac' on your old mac, is in a sense true. And you should treat a new OS update as having a new computer.
Apple does it's best to make it less time consuming to update with the 'update' feature. However, my experience with about 160 computers has been 99% with clean installs lasting about a year. With those who have simply just used the 'upgrade' install, the success rate is %90 for the update, but falls to %20 after a few days of use. After a year, those who used 'update', are having huge issue's with 'slowness' and other anomalies. My clients who did 'clean' installs, no problems at all with regular maintenance.
You only have to 'clean house' and do this once every 2 years. How often do you have your vehicle serviced?
If you follow these steps, you will have a happy computer for 2 years, and enjoy a nice bottle of wine. If you decide to take the quick and easy path... there are no guarantee's. And you know if something is going to go wrong, it will happen at the worst possible time. Besides, think of how much $$ you will save from not sending away for service, or sitting on the phone waiting for tech support.
Clean install... the only way to roll.

I use SuperDuper! to backup to a firewire drive.
Warnings/Notes:
To make a bootable clone, you must use a firewire (or internal) drive. Then SuperDuper! will erase everything on the destination drive before backing up t it, so it is best to start with a fresh drive. If the destination drive is large enough, partition it before using it so you can put more than one backup on the drive, or put data in one partition and backup(s) in other partition(s). If you don't have a new harddrive, and you need the data already on the destination drive, SuperDuper! will also let you clone to a disk image, but the clone is then not a bootable backup, and accessing the backup is therefore slightly more tedious. (Also, having a bootable backup is useful in case of utter catastrophe.)
SuperDuper! is not (yet) Leopard compatable. This means that you can backup Tiger before installing Leopard, and Leopard can still access the backup, but SuperDuper! will not yet allow you to then backup Leopard to a second partition/harddrive.

I upgaded to a iMac 27" Intel Core i7 from a wonderful iMac circa 2005 running OSX 10.6, but woefully underpowered
After unsuccessfully attempting to install Intuos 2 from Wacom Legacy Drivers I started hacking around.
1) I deleted / uninstalled all things Wacom, reinstalled Driver 6.3.7-3 from Wacom and restarted: Reslt: FAILURE: Again: Systems Prefrerences: Tablet not recognized.
2) On my iMac I searched for "Wacom" and deleted / uninstalled all things that contained the word Wacom EXCEPT "TabletDriver" - because it came up on the search, did not contain the name Wacom and I had not noticed it previously. ["Date Created = 10.05 ... i'm speculating that this is when I upgraded from 9.2]
3) I 2x clicked on "TabletDriver": SUCCESS! My subjjective evaluation is that the Pen is considerably more reponsive.
4) As I am on deadline, I have chosen for the moment not to investigate why this strategy worked but would be happy to follow-up when things quiet down.

I have the same setup and recently did the same upgrade to the same iMac. Would love to keep my intuos2 going.

(Installed both 6.3.7 -3 on the new computer and legacy drivers on my old 2005 mac)
Any insight on where the file TabletDriver resides?

Mac OSX Photoshop Elements 11 upgrade will not install

I downloaded Photoshop Elements 11 (upgrade) after purchase, and then tried to install.
I get the Agree to License page OK,
Enter Serial No - I get a green check mark,
I enter Adobe ID and Password, and it authenticates,
then the Option Page. Product "Photoshop Elements ..." is shown with an icon and a grayed out check mark in the left column.
"Adobe Photoshop Elements ..." is in the column to the right, but the "All Components" is grayed out and cannot be clicked.
I have tried to click on the "Photoshop Elements ..." but nothing happens
The Install button is NOT grayed out
If I click the Install button, nothing happens - I mean nothing - no error indication,,,, nothing - it clicks in but nothing happens.
Is there a logfile somewhere which can tell me why it is not installing?
BTW, it is an upgrade but it never asks me for a previous full version serial number. Perhaps that is only done at activation?

Thanks Jeff, but it only asks for the current serial number - Which I know is not right.
I did get it to install, however, by manually going in and deleteing all references to Adobe from my system. The Installer is not handling an exception properly and is failing. Sorry, that's a bug. The offending file apparently was in /library/application support/Adobe. For my purposes, I only have to re-install one additional product to insure that everything still works. The fact that it installed an update without asking for a previous serial number is also a bug - perhaps the same bug not completely cleaned up. My opinion is that they either have to fix the installer or offer a cleaner - maybe there is a cleaner but I did not know about it. I am marking this as complete but the developers clearly have some work here. Perhaps it is not possible to handle every exception - I can accept that also.

After being gone for 2 weeks we returned home and initially the iMAC booted fine and my wife was able to use it with no issues. Then she called later in the day reporting that she could no longer log into the machine despite trying to restart and then powering off/on. I had auto updates turned on so my guess is that the update to 10.9.4 happened but failed to complete.
I rebooted using the recovery disc, ran the check disk utility and there were some issues with permissions on some of the printer related files. After the utility corrected those I attempted to reboot again. Still ended up with the gray screen.
I installed OSX again, received no error messages, but still gray screen again. Rebooted in safe mode, checked the disks again and no issues. I followed all the steps to in the knowledge base article to check peripherals (none connected), clear memory, reinstall, etc. Getting the machine back in working mode required erasing the main drive and reinstalling OS X again. Since I have a cloud backup of my data, I was able to do that without serious data loss. It seems there was some issue with the update conflicting with some data that existed on the drive. Don't know where that would have been logged and not enough time available for me to scour the support site to track it down. This is mainly an FYI that the 10.9.4 updater may have issues and it took some drastic measures on my part to get my machine working again.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 11. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.
