Please help, Macbook HD disappeared suddenly =(

Has anyone ever heard of this happening?
My macbook suddenly froze, I could not get it to force quit anything, so I shut it down... and it wouldnt start. The folder with the question mark kept blinking so I tried to start it up holding option and nothing happened... then I tried starting it up with the disk installer 1 and it does not show my HD to repair or do anything with it... I tried to go on startup disk and it only shows the cd and network start up... So I thought I'd try to reinstall it and... there is no HD to pick from to install it on. I was wondering if anyone has had this happen to them and what could be the cause of it? Its a macbook 2.0 with 2G of ram, its barely a year old. When I start it I can hear some ticking noises then it stops....
Someone help me out please. Any help will be much appreciated, Thank you..

Same thing happened to me just today and after calling Apple and working through their suggestions for resolution, they told me to take my MB to the nearest Apple Store or Service Center for replacement.
Thankfully I extended my initial warranty but I'm ashamed to say I haven't backed up in a few months and therefore alot of data and some irreplaceable photos are lost.
I made an appt at the Genius Bar for Monday but I'm going to see what can be done before then.
This is the third major problem my MB has gone in for and today I was told that one more problem and they will just give me a new MB (they really should do that now since they've replaced my battery twice, my logic board, my heatsink, the discoloration twice) - this is a lemon.
I'm very disappointed but this time I'll make sure to back up daily. Live and Learn.

I have a Macbook Pro (13 in.) Mid-2010 which is running Mountain Lion OS X Version 10.8.2 (12C60).    I have had this computer for over 2 years and have NEVER had a problem with it and have loved it until 2 - 3 weeks ago, it suddenly started giving me problems. I have never cracked open the inside of any computer, but am seriously considering attempting to replace my hard drive (I've read so many different potential issues that may be the reason for my macbook problems, the hard drive disk being one -- not really sure why i'm leaning towards that one, but I'm desperate).
Here's What's Going On:
1. I frequently am getting the spinning beachball that will spin for, sometimes, seconds and sometimes SEVERAL minutes. The spinny beachball has been a rare occurrence in the past, but when I used to get it, I could just ForceQuit the application and restart it - problem solved..... NOW, I am not able to use ForceQuit. When I attempt to access the ForceQuit menu, it will not appear until the freeze/beachball problem has stopped and so at that point, there is no need to quit the app.
2. Starting my computer has become REDICULOUSLY SLOW. The slow startup problem began occurring at the same time as the beachballs. I'm getting to the white screen with the apple, and that's where it stays for anywhere from 15 - 45 minutes. There have been times that I tried to start it up but it took such a long time so I powered it down while it was still on the white/apple screen and then powered it back up -- I didn't know if this may be part of the reason for the REALLY long startup times (45 minutes).    But either way, best case scenario, it takes at least 15 - 20 minutes before my desktop appears.
3. Also, this may or may not be related, but there have been 2 occasions during this time where my laptop sound basically became disfunctional. I was not able to get any sound and lost the option to adjust the sound (when i tried, the little image of the speaker with the cross sign going through it would appear). Similarly, on a different occasion, the same thing happened with the keyboard backlighting - it is not working and it does not allow me to adjust the controls, same as the sound issue.
Like I said, I don't know a whole lot of computers, but this is what I've tried so far. - I cleared up some space on the hard drive (currently 101 out of 250 GB are free).   - I did the Disk Utility >> First Aid >> Repair Disk Permissions.   - I've copied all my files to an external drive, AND was going to try to Restore my computer to factory settings with the OS X (Snow Leopard) Installation Disc that came with my computer, BUT when I tried it gave me the following message: "You Can't Use This Version Of The Application 'Install Mac OS X' with this version of OS X. You have Install Mac OS X 23.1.1".   .... so, I guess I can't override Mountain Lion with Snow Leopard (?).....    And that's pretty much it. Now I'm considering replacing the hard drive while crossing my fingers.
OH YEAH, I forgot to mention.... and I'm not 100% on this ... but my problems started occurring in early October.... wasn't there a Mountain Lion update around that time???   It seems like I did an update around that time, but i could be wrong AND it may not be the problem .....    So....
IS THIS HAPPENING TO ANYONE ELSE ??
ANYONE ABLE TO LOOK AT THE SYMPTOMS I PROVIDED AND GIVE A DIAGNOSTIC OPINION OR OFFER SUGGESTIONS AS TO WHAT I SHOULD DO NEXT ??

I have since read about the exact same thing happening to others, including a writer for The Atlantic magazine who had never had an issue with a Mac before. Do a back-up ASAP to make sure you don't lose anything and see about replacing the HDD. It is only about $140 for a new drive. The real issue is if you lose your data, too. So, make sure you do that back-up!

Hello, i just bought my macbook pro. Its a Mac OS X ver. 10.5.7 with a 2.26GHz processor.
I have a Netgear 54mbps wireless router WGR614 v8 and a Motorola SB5100 SURFboard Cable modem.
Now the problem im having is with the internet connection with my mac. I live in Virginia and It was working before i went on vacation to tennessee which is an hour behind virginia. It was able to connect with no problems. It was also connecting fine in tennessee as well. But when i came back to Virginia, the mac would connect to my router or atleast say its connected but i can't use the internet at all. I would load either firefox, safari, or itunes store and the page would begin to load and then stop loading in the middle. As if it was freezing, dropping the connection or something. When i look through the airport connectivity, it would stay connected to my router with still no access to the internet. I also checked to make sure i was in the correct time zone with my mac and it was correct.I have a wii, xbox, original pc that are connected to router that operate perfectly. its just my macbook wont connect wirelessly when it used to before i went to tennesse and took it with me. Some of the error messages that i get when i try to use the internet via macbook now are "can't open page because the server unexpectedly dropped the connection" but then minutes later it would connect again, then internet would work. But shortly after it would stop working for a while. and the process continues like a cycle. PLEASE HELP BECAUSE IM CLUELESS. i've looked at many forums but no solution.

OK, I have been having the same problem. I have been renewing my dhcp every 5 min, so frustrating. I don't if this is the answer but this is the first time in a month I have been able to go for more than 3 hours without having to change anything, plus it seems faster. Instead of resetting your modem and router at the same time, unplug them both. 1st plug in your modem, allow it to fully reboot then plug in your router. Seems to have done the trick, good luck.
PS. I did clone my mac address in my router settings earlier this week.

Please Help Session variables disappear

Hi. I am having issues with the developer's version of CF MX
7. I recently set up the developer's version on a test server, and
moved over code from a properly working site using MX 6. I have an
application.cfm file set will the correct <cfapplication> tag
attributes, and the session management is set in the CF admin. When
working on MX 6 the session variables I set were working. Now using
MX 7 none of my sessions are holding. When I first login the
sessions exist, if I click any other page, the variables disappear.
Again, this does not happen on MX 6.

Please Help! Files disappeared while copying!

Hi all. Ok, I'm not an idiot, but I seem to have done something stupid and I'm hoping there's a fix. I'll try to keep this brief.
My main user on my G5 kept having weird preferences problems. I decided I would create a new admin user and transfer all of my essential data (pictures for iPhoto and music for iTunes) to the shared folder and then to the new user. The plan was to then delete the old user and have only my brand new one. Here's what happened:
I dragged the folder containing all 4,700 of my photos to the shared folder (I held down the command key to move the folder instead of copying it). A dialogue box popped up showing the move in process and also giving me a cancel button. After about 2 seconds it occurred to me that I probably should have 'copied' the folder instead of 'moving' it just in case. So I hit cancel. The problem is that the folder had already disappeared from the original location, and only 200 of my pictures had been transferred to the new location! SO THE OTHER 4,500 photos are GONE!! Where did they go!?
Please help! I really hope I didn't just lose ALL those irreplaceable pics.
One other thing: I kept a close eye on my activity monitor, watching the space used on my hard drive. It hasn't changed. I would think that if the files were gone completely the disk space used would have gone down by 4GB. Any ideas? PLEASE!?

You didn't lose them, but the Finder did. Do you have a copy of DiskWarrior? That will find them and put any 'lost' files into a 'lost & found' folder for you.
If not, there's a longer way - manually. Here's how. I have the same problem with the images disappearing inside my pictures folders, so I do a search with the Find tool, and use the names of the pictures - I take it with that many photos, they are taken with a digital camera?
Do a search with the IMG000.jpg or DSC0001.jpg - basically whatever the common name that your camera titles the pictures with. Don't bother with using the numbers. What will happen is that the pictures will come up in the search window and what I do is then I have a new folder waiting on the desktop and I drag and drop the pictures, 20 or 30 at a time out of the Finder window right into the new folder. That usually nails it, unless something has really gone flooey and I just use the DW.

There are 9 different versions of iPhoto and they run on 9 different versions of the Operating System. The tricks and tips for dealing with issues vary depending on the version of iPhoto and the version of the OS. So to get help you need to give as much information as you can. Include things like:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. As full a description of the problem as you can. For example, if you have a problem with exporting, then explain by describing how you are trying to export, and so on.
- History: Is this going on long? Has anything been installed or deleted? - Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
- Anything unusual about your set up? Or how you use iPhoto?
Anything else you can think of that might help someone understand the problem you have.

My lil did an update to IOS 7 for his iphone 4s and my dads iphone 4. Apparently, He was using his ID for both phones as my dad doesn't have one and also icloud was on on both phones and the result is his phone also has my dads contacts and vice versa. After realising my dad could receive his texts, he unticked his number on dads imessage. Things done. But my dad then asked my brother to to get rid off his friends contacts on dads. He accidentally deleted his friends contacts on dads phone without turn off icloud so all his friends number on his phone also disappeared and then he did another silly thing was turn off icloud on dads phone after that and yeah dads contacts also disappeared. Please let me know if he can do anything to recover both phones' contacts?
And also dad thinks IOS7 is too fancy and run a bit slow on his phone. Is there any how we can downgrade it back to IOS6?

Please help! Stickies disappeared

Hello, I put my macbook to sleep and when I opened it again, stickies (the app, not the dashboard stickies) were open with only one blank sticky! I had a bunch and now they're all gone. I went to find the stickiesdatabase but it's only 4kb and says it was created this morning. There's nothing in the trash. I don't have time machine set up or a back up (I know this was stupid) so how can I recover my stickies?

Please Help MacBook Wont boot

My sons MacBook (one year and one week old) will not boot up. The fans are full on and the folder icon with question mark is flashing. I have tried starting from disc but everytime the disc is ejected and the screen shows flashing folder and question mark. I have tried to access the hard drive in target disc mode but this does not work. I have tried resetting the pram etc.
Any suggestions gratfully received

Let me see if I have what you are saying straight:
1) When you start up the computer with no changes, it gives you a flashing "?" icon.
2) You are unable to boot the computer into FireWire target disk mode.
3) Booting with the install disk in and holding down the C key you still get the same result.
At this point it is quite plain that there is a hardware failure. Is everything in the computer original equipment? or have you added RAM or changed out the hard drive? If the latter, does it change if you put the original stuff back in?
Assuming that the problem remains with your stock computer, call Apple (800-275-2273 in the USA) or go to an Apple retail store to arrange a repair.

Please Help - MacBook or MacBook Pro

I am ready to take the plunge and purchase an Apple laptop. I'm looking for some advice regarding the model and options that I should choose. As my primary purpose for the laptop is music-related, I thought this would be a good place to ask for advice.
Following are some things that I intend to do with this machine...
[o] Record and mix acoustic-based music consisting of guitars, vocals, percussion, etc. I'm currently recording on a PC through a Tascam US-122 interface using Cubase. I am not concerned with the size of the display as I will be plugging into a larger monitor while recording in the studio.
[o] Stream recorded music and live performances to websites such as Second Life. Therefore, the laptop will also need to be graphically powerful enough to smoothly render virtual worlds such as Second Life.
[o] Other multimedia functions such as editing and storing photos, running iTunes, etc.
Will the MacBook be powerful enough or do I need to go with the MacBook Pro? Also, what upgrades should I purchase? Thank you in advance for your advice.

The MacBook should be fine. the only reason you might want to go with the pro is if you intend to create a LOT of audio tracks, in which case the 7200 RPM HD would be the option to choose (personally, i would just buy a FireWire drive, search around a bit and one can be had for around $100)
1gig of memory should be fine, but if you have the spare cash, it wouldn't hurt to buy some memory from a third party and add it yourself, 2gig would be really nice to have.
all that said, i don't use second life, so i don't know how demanding it is, but if a 2 or 2.2Gc processor isn't enough then the mac SL client needs a re-write. that's a LOT of horsepower.

Installed the OS X Yosemite my computer froze up daily, trying to reinstall then I got really stucked, please help

My computer kept freeze up daily with OS X Yosemite installed a while ago, and I followed the other instruction to do "OS X" Recovery to: (1) erased my start up disk (2) Reinstalling Mac OS X Yosemite.
While about 18 or 20 minutes remaining from the installation, it went back to 2 hours 57 minutes but stuck there. I let my computer run over night but it was still at 2 hours 57 minutes. so I cancelled the installation which seemed to be the only choice.
I tried again today, erased my start up disk and reinstalled again, same situation happened again, when the remaining time said around 20 minutes, it went back to 2 hours 56 minutes and stuck there. I cancelled it again.
I read some other instructions in this community and did a hard shutdown and restarted while hold down the command key + R key. it took me to the disk manager screen and the only choice I had was the OS X Lion version.
I tried to install the OS X Lion, it said that will take 3 hours or so, after 20 minutes, a screen came up and said I need to turn off the computer by press the power button down then turn the computer on again. And I did. When I turn on the computer again, with Comand + R key pressed, I had to wait for an
internet recovery before I went back to the disk manager and trying to reinstall the OS X system. It kept coming back to ask me to turn the power off…
what can I do? Please help,

Boot back into the Recovery Partition. Run Disk Utility Verify/Repair and Repair Permissions until you get no errors. Then re-install the OS.
