Plotting pdf files

We have been printing .pdf files to our plotter ever since we have had it with no problems. Lately some of our computers have stopped plotting .pdf files. It says it is printing but does not say receiving on the plotter. The same computers can print to other printers but this is our only plotter. We have tried various versions of adobe reader without any luck. We have even tried other programs to print them with no luck.
The computers can print to the plotter using AutoCAD and some computers can print .pdf files to the plotter. The plotter is on our main server so everyone is using the same driver and everything, A few weeks ago some of the computers that cannot print .pdf files could. Can anyone give me an idea of what is going on?

Two things that I can think of that might be causing the problem.
One is the resolution - did you change the resolution for the output of the PDF? 300 DPI should be adequate.
Does the file contain any raster files? If you have any scanned raster files embedded in the drawing it can cause very large PDF's.

How to Plot a PDF file

I am very good at creating PDF files out of autocad. and so
is all the people that send me files. everything i get is in PDF
format. And now i need to print them onto paper.
I have installed Adobe Pro 9 and have tried with Adobe Pro 6
(to no end) to plot a PDF file to a 24"x36" sheet.
I just spoke with the sales person at Adobe to see if i had
the correct program - he assured me i did, he explained that my
HP600 plotter should be one of the choices in the print selector
(its not) and that the sheet size should be available once i select
this plotter (that would be neat.)
he also explained that customer support is unavailable untill
i purchase this prog, and i dont want to shell the cash unless it
does the task i need. this is a lot of money for a printer driver.
Is there some option that has to be selected, some menu im
not seeing. I am sure with all the people sending me PDF format cad
printouts, that there is a simple way to convert them to paper.
IF anybody knows, please help.

When printing an AutoCAD-exported PDF file, the paper version has lines that screen does not show

We were contacted by our customer, a landscape architectural company that uses our product, M-Color, (http://m-color.com) to plot AutoCAD drawings with required preferences and effects.
However, they provided us with a sample PDF files, that contain examples of scanned drawings, that have some "ghost lines" at the drawings that the screen does not show.
We tracked the issue and it appears to be an issue with Adobe Reader pringing. We tried many versions from 8.0 version onwards to the latest versions available in public, all represent the same issue.
This may be an issue of the original drawing having some line that was not marked ending at some point.
The zip file within the link below has three PDF files, two from the company that brought this issue to our awareness and the one with name "scanstation" is printed by me, and then scanned with markings to explain the issue.
Any ideas what would be the best solution to solve this issue?

Thin lines in pdf file displayed on mac

Hi,
I don't know if this is the right place to bring this up. So redirection elsewhere is appreciated!
I've noticed a problem with displaying certain pdf files on a mac. The files are 2D filled plots produced by the free scientific software Yorick (http://yorick.sourceforge.net/). It happens when I view it in Preview or Powerpoint on a mac. But not if I use a pdf viewer on a unix system. The yorick source code for a simple example is below. I can't find a way to attach files to this messages or I'd include the pdf's. Is there a way to do this?
Both png's are fine, and the pdf of the pli plot is fine. pli assumes uniform grid spacing, is fast, and must use different graphics primitives than plf, which does not assume uniform grids (i.e. you can have non-square elements). In this case both x and y grids really are uniform. The problem is with the pdf of the plf plot. Look at it in Preview, you should see some thin lines. Put it in powerpoint and the same. If you put some solid colored box in back of it, you'll see the color. So the lines are transparent or something.
David Munro, the creator of Yorick, suggests it's an issue with anti-aliasing.
Anyway, the problem isn't that severe in this example, but in others (which don't have simple source code) it's more annoying.
Either way, any advice on this, or the right people to report this to, is appreciated.

As I suspected, the problem is that the other viewers are not savvy enough to handle the "stitching problem".
What looks like a single image is really a WHOLE LOT of single squares. I took a snapshot of the Edit Object tool in Acrobat with all the objects selected. See <https://photos-3.dropbox.com/i/o/R6asqv64sEP1Tf7eIEBfNbFbMw0F7qKEaFwfnXQVKLo/1644474/12950 96400/0fa9181>.
As you can see from that, each square is a separate image that needs to be rendered and if the viewer doesn't understand how to proper stitch the pieces together then you will get empty pixels (which appears as white lines).
Either contact the author of the program that authored the document and see about getting that fixed (if it's not you) and/or contact the other viewers about improving their products.

What does Firefox do with .pdf files?

Our department has started using "the cloud". In our office, we create drawings and maps in Microstation which are also made into .pdf files. It is the .pdf files that we share with clients. I was viewing a .pdf file we created recently and it was listed as a Firefox HTML document. Questions: Is Firefox actually changing our files? What if we sometimes need to have them behave exactly as an Adobe file is expected to behave? What if we need to download a .pdf file and put it on a CD to hand to someone? Will the client be coming back to us saying "What is this thing, I can't use it?" Can we expect these files to plot exactly as a .pdf would plot, and what would we need to do differently?
Is there something printed up, or a document online, that would explain these things and tell us what normally happens, so that my supervisor (who has barely had a chance to look while this upgrade is happening) would understand it?

What does it mean, registers as handler? We have people using any of 3 default browsers in my department. Some IE, some Firefox, possibly some Chrome (which was included in upgrade installation but I get the impression that people may not like or trust it.) What if some of the files have been opened with one browser, some with another? Also I do not have admin privileges on my work computer so probably can not change the adobe settings for my own computer, let alone the department. I see a potential mess.
Where do I learn about this and how do I find some resources I can share?

No marker on JFreeChart into Pdf file by IText, why?

I have a question which has wasted my few days.
I created a web report with JFreechart and Table on Panel. There is a Value Marker (vertical line ) on the line chart which created by JFreeChart. They all work fine on the website. Then I would like to put them into Pdf file with iText. For the chart, table, and title, pdf file looks fine. But, I can not see any marker in the pdf.
Here is part of my code as follows:

Printing Large Converted Document to .pdf file Blurred

I'm attempting to convert a large land surveying file (Carlson Survey 2012 .dwg file) to a .pdf (Acrobat Pro X) file I can share with a client for their project. The file contains survey drawings of several sections of land (11 miles X 8 miles). The file creates to plot on 36 X 48" plotter without a problem but when I increase the viewing size, the labels become too blurred to read. How can I "sharpen" the text and lines when increasing the viewing size to keep text sharp and lines from blurring together?

The bad news: If the information (pixels) isn't there in the PDF, there is no tool to give it higher resolution in Acrobat except recreating the PDF file and choosing a different output setting which creates higher resolution.
It's as if you chose a low resolution when scanning an image. You can't magically make it high resolution. You have to scan it again with different settings.

Use acrobat 8 in a shellscript and make a pdf file OCR recognize text with selected language

I have a little problem and I don't know how to overcome this...
I want to use a shellscript and call acrobat.exe and open a pdf file (up till now I've done this..), but the difficult part is that I want in this shellscript to use parameters/switches in order to make the pdf file OCR text recognized and use selected language e.g greek !!!!
How can i do that?
What is the command prompt parameters...?
In command line when i use
c:\> cd C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Acrobat 8.0\Acrobat> acrobat.exe <pdffile>
it opens the pdf file in the acrobat....
So what switches do I have to insert next?

Microsoft has released a hot fix that supposedly addresses this issue, it is at

I downloaded the fix and tried it; it actually made the problem worse! Apparently they
are trying to fix their filter rather than bypassing it. What I am doing is
1. Making maps in AutoCaD Map and printing (plotting in autocad) them to a pdf file
2. Opening the pdf file in Acrobat and resaving it as eps
3. Importing the eps file into a Word 2007 document
4. Use Acrobat to convert the Word document to pdf
Before the hot fix when I did the process the resolution of the map in the final
pdf file was not as good as in the original made from AutoCad. Also the colors were
not correct. After installing the hotfix there are still these same problems but also now
any non horizontal text is not displaying correctly.
Be careful about trying this hotfix.
As others have noted, back in Word 2003 the above steps 1 - 4 worked very well and resulted
in a high quality pdf file with the map as good as in the original pdf.

IT DOESN'T WORK ANYMORE IN THE ACROBAT XI. AUTOCAD PLOT WINDOW SHOWS THE PDF AS PRINTER BUT CANNOT COMPLETE THE OPERATION AND SAYS ERROR. HELP PLEASE

Filename in Save As dialog when saving PDF file

I have a web site serving up PDF files. Without going into details, the URLs of the PDFs are not just your basic URL but look simething like this:

In this case the actual filename is "Promo Cover Cool-MedHi.pdf"
While viewing in Safari (OS X), if the user saves the PDF to their local machine, the Save As dialog comes up and the filename field is automatically populated. The problem is, instead of using just the filename, the field contains this:

I know when performing the same action on Windows using Internet Explorer, the Save As dialog box filename field is populated correctly with just the filename (although it shows up URL encoded as Promo%20Cover%20Cool-MedHi.pdf, which is OK).
I'd like to be able to force Safari to use just the filename in the Save As dialog box. Has anyone come accross this problem and figured out a solution?

ALL MY DESKTOP APPS CONVERTED TO PDF FILES.

After sending an urgent email attachment in Adobe PDF to Government Offcom, all my Desktop applications in windows 7 64 bit have been converted to PDF files and cannot be opened.   The attachment used was sent to me by my Secretary remotely using an old MAC.
I can return my laptop to normal operation by un installing my Adobe Reader 11 app, but the problem returns when I re Download Adobe Reader
11 again.     After discussing this with Adobe Technical in London they advised me to raise this issue with your Adjudicators in this Forum.
Please assist asap as this is very urgent right now for several genuine reasons.

The application Acrobat provides no language translation capability.
If you localize the language for OS, MS Office applications, Acrobat, etc to the desired language try again.
Alternative: transfer a copy of content into a web based translation service (Bing or Google provides a free service).
Transfer the output into a word processing program that is localized to the appropriate language.
Do cleanup.

PDF File Size - any way to compress further?

We have are using the Crystal for .NET export method to export a report to a .pdf file, and are having an issue with the pdf file size on a report that contains images. The images are stored in a SQL2005 database as blob or varbinary(max). The report executes a stored procedure that selects data (including images) to produce a quotation. There are input parms to decide which images to print (for example A, B or both A&B). Both types of images can appear at the line level on the quotation. Type A images print in the main report, Type B images are in a subreport. Both the main report & subreport execute a stored procedure to select an image type.
Our issue, when both Type A and B image is selected to print on a 293 line quote. The PDF file size is 44.23MB
When Type A only is selected, the PDF file size is 2.64MB
When Type B only is selected, the PFD file size is 43.95MB.
There are more Type B images that would print at the line level than Type A, but is there any way to compress this down further as it is too large to email.

You mention that you are using Crystal for .NET, but not what version; CR for .NET 2003, 2005, 2008. 2010?
Applying the latest fixes for the correct version of CR would be the first thing to do.
Next, I'd have a close look at image B as it appears to be the one adding the most "bulk". How is this image different from image A?
General tips re. images:
Save the files a BMPs.
When .jpg image is inserted into Crystal Reports it is converted into bitmap format and as the result of the conversion the report may loose some quality, scale and other issues may arise... E.g.; Crystal Reports is not so good a graphics management tool
When an image is saved as a .bmp, then there is no conversion required and thus the quality of the image should be preserved.
Best practice: save the image with high resolution and required size as a .bmp format then insert this image into Crystal Reports.
Resize the image to the smallest possible size and downgrade the DPI to 72. This will ensure your image is as small as possible and Crystal Reports will have to put in the least amount of work to display it.

This KB, may apply to your version of CR, or not. In any case, you will have to use the KB as a guide and determine what the appropriate registry entry would be for your version of CR.
One more thing. Many people like to use jpg files as they are smaller than bmp files. However, as far as Crystal Reports is concerned, this is inconsequential. The report file will be the same size if a file is inserted as a jpg or a bmp. This is due to the jpg conversion to bmp Crystal Reports does internally.

How to read,dispaly and open pdf files

Hi, I am very new to Java butI have VB6.0 background. My current requirement is to read pdf file names from a directory, then
show them on a form in a list (with their path in background pointing to the actual pdf files) and then once a user clicks any
file name, open that file on the form.
For example:
My pdf files are in a directory as following:
C:\myreports\user1\
report1.pdf
report2.pdf
report3.pdf
C:\myreports\user2\
report1.pdf
report5.pdf
The output on the form should look like this if user1 has logged in the system. Side note: I am able to get userid of the logged in person in a variable.
My Reports:
. Report 1
. Report 2
. Report 3
When a user clicks Report 1, it opens on the same form in pdf format.

For the first part (Listing thepdf files in the directory) you can use the java.lang.File class.
File f = new File("path to your directory");
File files[] = f.listFiles();
then process the files array to find the files with extenction pdf
You can also use a file filter object and make the listFiles method return only the pdf files.
Please read the documentation about the File class for more info about it.

Also you can search for free java based pdf viewers I am sure there must be meny.
And also the JTextPane might support pdf but I am not sure about it.

you could try using the DDE package to open the file
and then print from the actual file location using a host command.
