Converting from PDF directly to Java Objects/XML (and PDF format questions)

I posted this originally in the Acrobat Windows forums but was told I might have more luck here, so here goes:
I am desperately trying to find a tool (preferably open source but commercial is fine also) that will sit on top of a PDF and allow me to query it's text for content and formatting (I don't care about images). I have found some tools that get me part of the way there, but nothing that seems to provide an end-to-end solution but is quite lightweight. My main question is WHY are there so many tools that go from PDF to RTF, and many tools that go from RTF to XML, but NONE that I can find that go PDF to XML.
To clarify, by formatting I simply mean whether a line/block of text is bold/italic, and its font size. I am not concerned with exact position on the page. The background is that I will be searching PDFs and assigning importance to whether text is a heading/bodytext etc. We already have a search tool in place so implementing a pure PDF search engine is not an option. I need a lightweight tool that simply allows me to either make calls directly to the PDF OR converts to XML which I can parse.
Some tools I have tried:
1) PDFBox (Java Library) - Allows the extraction of text content easily, but doesn't seem to have good support for formatting.
2) JPedal (Java Library) - Allows extraction of text content easily, and supports formatting IF XML structured data is in the PDF (not the case for my data).
3) Nitro PDF (Tool) + RTF to XML (script) - This works quite nicely and shows that PDF to XML is possible, but why do I have to use 2 tools? Also, these are not libraries I can integrate into my app.
4) iText (Java Library) - Seems great at creating PDFs but poor at extracting content.
I don't really expect someone to give me a perfect solution (although that would be nice!).
Instead, what I'd like to know is WHY tools support PDF to RTF/Word/whatever retaining formatting, and other tools support RTF to XML with the formatting information retained. What is it about PDF and RTF/Word that makes it feasible to convert that way, but not to XML. Also, as I found in 3) above, it is perfectly feasible to end up as XML from PDF, so why do no tools support this reliably!

XML doesn't mean anything - it's just a generic concept for structuring
information. You need a specific GRAMMAR of XML to mean anything. So what
grammar would you use? Something standard? Make up your own?
However, there are a number of commercial and open source products that can
convert PDF to various XML grammars - SVG, ABW, and various custom grammars.
But the other thing you need to understand is that most PDF files do not
have any structure associated with them (as you saw when using JPEDAL). As
such, any concepts of paragraphs/sections/tables/etc. Are WILD GUESSES by
the software in question.

Error while sending PO output through mail in PDF format - Urgent

Dear friends,
Developed program to send sapscript output through mail in pdf format, the program running properly, even function module SO_NEW_DOCUMENT_ATT_SEND_API1 returning sy-subrc 0. But the external mail is not going to user lying in SAP outbox with message <b>"Wait for communications service"</b> . SCOT is properly configured, tested mails sending through SAP office.

A cyclic job runs, which processes the messages seen in the SOST queue.
Are you sure it's not the frequency of the cyclic job, rather than the
number of messages in the queue, that you are observing? In messages
that are queued and before the cyclic job runs, "wait for comm. service"
is the normal status.
If you mean that there are always 4 items queued in SOST regardless of
the cyclic send job, then I have no ideas. I would have thought there
was no way to do that.
when the send job runs it just never
picks them up & sends them, while it picks up many others. The send job
is somehow blind to these; no error message occurs. In this case, I
'delete' them from the queue (in SOST) and then 'undelete' (drop down
menu -> /Go to /Deleted Items) them and then re-queue them. THEN they
actually get picked up & sent when the next cyclic send job executes.

How can I embed files of word, excel, and pdf format in a pdf document

I have a word document of the product, which I am updating for next product release. However, there are some excel, word, and pdf files embedded within a word document. When I double click these embedded files in word, these files open in a new window. However, we deliver documentation to the customer in the pdf format. Therefore, when I am converting the word document in the pdf format, only an icon of the embedded file is displayed and the files do not open in a new window. Can someone let me know how can I embed these files (in word, excel, and pdf format) in a pdf document?

You must attach them to the PDF file after it is created. You cannot embed file attachments onto a page as you can with Word.

Hi,
I don't think it is possible to redirect the html stream of the Web Dynpro iView to a PDF / Excel document, since it essentially would mean you have to call the Web Dynpro application again, maintaining the state and context of the iview itself
However, using (for instance) the JExcelApi (Excel) or iText (PDF) you could create documents using the data displayed in your Web Dynpro iView, which has the added benefit you could design and layout your PDF / Excel documents in a more suitable layout for printing (most WD applications look horrible when printed)

How are all of you. Well I am new to Flex. But I have started
building simple applications. One of the top most problem I am
facing is working with XML and Button. Can you please assist me in

Let's assume that variable "node" contains one element of the
XML. For example,

You can build a Button like this:

Guidance with XML and templates

I am currently saving metadata in separate xml files, each of which pertains to a particular image.
(They all resemble the sample XML file above, but with different data, and possibly empty values
in some fields). Currently, no fields are required (but may be in the future).
I am now trying to define a template for the xml files...However, I am a novice with XML and am
having trouble creating a template and its constraints.
I would like the template to:
- Impose an order on the metadata fields, so when I read it in, I can get the appropriate field
at the appropriate time.
- Validate that the type of data entered into those fields are correct.
- If no xml file exists for that image, I will be able to pull in the field names (in order)
into my program, and create a GUI with the field names and no data
- If an xml file does exists for that image, I will be able to pull in the field names (in order)
into my program, and create a GUI with the field names and the data in the xml file
I'm assuming that this template would have to be read in each time a user requests to see the
information associated with an image.

Hi, quick basic question...
I'm trying to generate pdf doc from xml with xsl.
I'm using following sample code from xml.apache.org

is foo.xsl any regular xsl that I use to coonvert xml into html?
or is it some special xsl that is tailored for pdf.

Hi IL,
XSLT can translate XML to something else. It is most suited to transforming to another tree-like format (XML, HTML, etc.) but can be 'asked' to produce other kinds of output, flat text for example.
It is driven by an XSL file which is a series of patterns to match and output to produce.
This XSL file can be used to generate another XML document in which the nodes come from the Formatting Object namespace. These describe, in generic terms the format of an output document based upon the contents of the original XML.
The formatting object XML document can then be used as input to a formatting object XML processor which can generate PDF output from it.
You may want to check out:

for all the stuff on XML, XSL, XSLT, Formatting Objects, etc., and:
xml.apache.org
for imformation on Xalan, which is an XSL processor and FOP, which is a formatting object processor.

How can I programatically control the names of files output from Labview into .pdf format (ie with Adobe PDF Writer or Distiller)?

I would like to save some data forms for a standard test controlled with labview in a pdf format. Due to the large number of forms and test reports, I would like to have Labview automatically assign the .pdf file name based on test number already contained in the labview code. How can I do this.
Note: This question is very similar to:
"Labview and Adobe Acrobat output" posted by John Balone on 1/26/2000. The reponses offered good suggestions but it is not clear to me how to implement them.

Has anyone experienced problems with not recieving XLS, PDF formatted advanced reports via email?
Is anyone using the TAW/WEB-INF/web.xml parameter:

I created APS with only CVOM service and changed the parameter Xmx6g, but the result is the same. But there are some strange thing, since com at the time of shipment and PDF generation dedicated to the APS, the value of the metric "Maximum Memory (MB)" was 5.461Mg that corresponds to the parameter Xmx6g, but the metric "Total Memory (MB)" value was 1792Mg and "Free Memory (MB)" the 1.052Mg value. Is it possible that the APS does not use all available memory is allocated to it? At the time of generating the server had memory available to grow.
